Formation of dendrite crystals in poly(ethylene oxide) interacting with bioresourceful tannin

High-strength, antibacterial, antioxidant, hemostatic, and biocompatible chitin/PEGDE-tannic acid hydrogels for wound healing

Natural polymer hydrogels are widely used in various aspects of biomedical engineering, such as wound repair, owing to their abundance and biosafety. However, the low strength and the lack of function restricted their development and application scope. Herein, we fabricated novel multifunctional chitin/PEGDE-tannic acid (CPT) hydrogels through chemical- and physical-crosslinking strategies, using chitin as the base material, polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) and tannic acid (TA) as crosslinking agents, and 90 % ethanol as the regenerative bath. CPT hydrogels maintained a stable three-dimensional porous structure with suitable water contents and excellent biocompatibility. The mechanical properties of hydrogels were greatly improved (tensile stress up to 5.43 ± 1.14 MPa). Moreover, CPT hydrogels had good antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostatic activities and could substantially promote wound healing in a rat model of full-thickness skin defect by regulating inflammatory responses and promoting collagen deposition and blood vessel formation. Therefore, this work provides a useful strategy to fabricate novel multifunctional CPT hydrogels with excellent mechanical, antibacterial, antioxidant, hemostatic, and biocompatible properties. CPT hydrogels could be promising candidates for wound healing.

Morphology Modulation in Self-Assembly of Chiral 2-Hydroxy-2-Phenylacetic Acids in Polymeric Diluents

This study focused on the chirality effects that control the lamellar bending sense in self-assembled crystals of chiral 2-hydroxy-2-phenylacetic acids. 2-Hydroxy-2-phenylacetic acid or mandelic acid (MA) was crystallized in the presence of poly(4-vinyl phenol) (PVPh), and its crystalline structures and morphologies were assessed using polarized optical microscopy (POM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MA of two opposite chiral forms (S- and R-) was crystallized with PVPh as the morphology modulator; with adjustment of the PVPh content, the morphology of MA crystals transforms from ring-banded spherulites to highly dendritic spherulites. For MA/PVPh (50/50 wt./wt.) blend and neat MA at same Tc, the dendritic spherulites are packed with single crystals where the lamellae bend at a specific direction varying with Tc and chirality. Contrary to conventional thought, the bending senses of the MA lamellae in the dendritic spherulites are not solely governed by the MA molecular chirality (S or R), but also by Tc. Only at high Tc (>65 °C) is the lamellar bending direction in dendritic spherulites of (S)-MA or (R)-MA blended with PVPh dictated by the chirality, i.e., displaying counterclockwise and clockwise bending direction for (S)-MA/PVPh and (R)-MA/PVPh, respectively. Nevertheless, at low Tc (45 °C), the bending sense of dendritic spherulites displays an opposite direction from those at the higher Tc, which is to say that the chirality alone does not control the lamellar bending direction.

Unique Periodic Rings Composed of Fractal-Growth Dendritic Branching in Poly(p-dioxanone)

Amorphous poly(p-vinyl phenol) (PVPh) was added into semicrystalline poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO) to induce a uniquely novel dendritic/ringed morphology. Polarized-light optical, atomic-force and scanning electron microscopy (POM, AFM, and SEM) techniques were used to observe the crystal arrangement of a uniquely peculiar cactus-like dendritic PPDO spherulite, with periodic ring bands not continuingly circular such as those conventional types reported in the literature, but discrete and detached to self-assemble on each of the branches of the lobs. Correlations and responsible mechanisms for the formation of this peculiar banded-dendritic structure were analyzed. The periodic bands on the top surface and interior of each of the cactus-like lobs were discussed. The banded pattern was composed of feather-like lamellae in random fractals alternately varying their orientations from the radial direction to the tangential one. The tail ends of lamellae at the growth front spawned nucleation cites for new branches; in cycles, the feather-like lamellae self-divided into multiple branches following the Fibonacci sequence to fill the ever-expanding space with the increase of the radius. The branching fractals in the sequence and the periodic ring-banded assembly on each of the segregated lobs of cactus-like dendrites were the key characteristics leading to the formation of this unique dendritic/ringed PPDO spherulite.

Cocrystalline Polymer Films Exhibiting Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

Tailored polymer materials exhibiting high-glass transition temperatures, cross-linked matrices, and/or strong intermolecular interactions containing electric-field poled nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores are promising materials for applications in optical telecommunication, high-performance computing, and data transmission. Although the current design parameters have led to significant advances in NLO materials, we introduce an alternative, yet highly effective, approach in which a NLO chromophore is cocrystallized with a polymer, forming a noncentrosymmetric hybrid host-guest complex. Specifically, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline (CNA) will cocrystallize and exhibit second harmonic generation (SHG) activity due to the formation of a noncentrosymmetric cocrystalline unit cell where the chromophore exhibits acentric alignment. Furthermore, the hybrid PEO/CNA films exhibit interesting SHG activity at elevated temperature in which SHG intensity decreases to zero when the cocrystal orientation randomizes due to sample melting. Aligning and maintaining a cocrystalline domain orientation via the formation of hybrid host-guest complexes, while imparting SHG properties, is an innovative approach for creating materials exhibiting SHG properties.

Polyphenol-Containing Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Properties, and Therapeutic Delivery

Polyphenols, the phenolic hydroxyl group-containing organic molecules, are widely found in natural plants and have shown beneficial effects on human health. Recently, polyphenol-containing nanoparticles have attracted extensive research attention due to their antioxidation property, anticancer activity, and universal adherent affinity, and thus have shown great promise in the preparation, stabilization, and modification of multifunctional nanoassemblies for bioimaging, therapeutic delivery, and other biomedical applications. Additionally, the metal-polyphenol networks, formed by the coordination interactions between polyphenols and metal ions, have been used to prepare an important class of polyphenol-containing nanoparticles for surface modification, bioimaging, drug delivery, and disease treatments. By focusing on the interactions between polyphenols and different materials (e.g., metal ions, inorganic materials, polymers, proteins, and nucleic acids), a comprehensive review on the synthesis and properties of the polyphenol-containing nanoparticles is provided. Moreover, the remarkable versatility of polyphenol-containing nanoparticles in different biomedical applications, including biodetection, multimodal bioimaging, protein and gene delivery, bone repair, antibiosis, and cancer theranostics is also demonstrated. Finally, the challenges faced by future research regarding the polyphenol-containing nanoparticles are discussed.

Tannin-Based Hybrid Materials and Their Applications: A Review

Tannins are eco-friendly, bio-sourced, natural, and highly reactive polyphenols. In the past decades, the understanding of their versatile properties has grown substantially alongside a continuously broadening of the tannins' application scope. In particular, recently, tannins have been increasingly investigated for their interaction with other species in order to obtain tannin-based hybrid systems that feature advanced and/or novel properties. Furthermore, in virtue of the tannins' chemistry and their high reactivity, they either physicochemically or physically interact with a wide variety of different compounds, including metals and ceramics, as well as a number of organic species. Such hybrid or hybrid-like systems allow the preparation of various advanced nanomaterials, featuring improved performances compared to the current ones. Consequently, these diverse-shaped materials have potential use in wastewater treatment or catalysis, as well as in some novel fields such as UV-shielding, functional food packaging, and biomedicine. Since these kinds of tannin-based hybrids represent an emerging field, thus far no comprehensive overview concerning their potential as functional chemical building blocks is available. Hence, this review aims to provide a structured summary of the current state of research regarding tannin-based hybrids, detailed findings on the chemical mechanisms as well as their fields of application.

Periodic Fractal-Growth Branching to Nano-Structured Grating Aggregation in Phthalic Acid

Small-molecule phthalic acid (PA), confined in micrometer thin films, was crystallized in the presence of strongly interacting tannic acid (TA) to investigate crystal assembly and correlation between banded patterns and branching structures. Several compositions of the mixture of ethanol/water solutions and evaporation temperatures were also manipulated to investigate the kinetic effects on the morphology of PA crystals. With increasing evaporation rate, the morphology of PA crystals systematically changes from circular-banded spherulites to highly ordered grating-banded patterns. A unique periodic fractal-branch pattern with contrasted birefringent bands exists at intermediate evaporation rate, and this unique grating architecture has never been found in other banded crystals. Crystal assembly of these three periodic morphologies was analyzed by utilizing atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal the mechanisms of formation of hierarchical structures of PA. The detailed growth mechanisms of the novel fractal-branching assembly into circular- or grating-banded patterns are analyzed in this work.

An Injectable and Instant Self-Healing Medical Adhesive for Wound Sealing

Designing versatile functional medical adhesives with injectability, self-healing, and strong adhesion is of great significance to achieve desirable therapeutic effects for promoting wound sealing in healthcare. Herein, a self-healing injectable adhesive is fabricated by physical interaction of polyphenol compound tannic acid (TA) and eight-arm poly(ethylene glycol) end-capped with succinimide glutarate active ester (PEG-SG). The hydrogen bonding induced from the structural unit (-CH₂-CH₂-O-) of PEG and catechol hydroxyl (-OH) of TA, accompanied by ester exchange between N-hydroxysuccinimide (-NHS) and amino (-NH₂) of proteins, contributes to self-healing ability and rapid strong adhesion. Notably, the PEG/TA adhesive can repeatedly adhere to rigid porcine tissues, close the coronary artery under a large incision tension, and bear a heavy load of 2 kg. By exhibiting shear-thinning and anti-swelling properties, the PEG/TA adhesive can be easily applied through single-syringe extrusion onto various wounds. The single-channel toothpaste-like feature of the adhesive ensures its storage hermetically for portable usage. Moreover, in vivo operation and histological H&E staining results indicate that the PEG/TA adhesive greatly accelerates wound healing and tissue regeneration in a rat model. With the specialty of injectability, instant self-healing, and long-lasting strong adhesion to facilitate excellent therapeutic effects, the multifunctional PEG/TA adhesive may provide a new alternative for self-rescue and surgical situations.
