Preparation, characterization and degradation kinetics of transparent fluorinated polyimides with low dielectric constants and excellent hydrophobic properties

Versatile Landscape of Low-k Polyimide: Theories, Synthesis, Synergistic Properties, and Industrial Integration

The development of microelectronics and large-scale intelligence nowadays promotes the integration, miniaturization, and multifunctionality of electronic and devices but also leads to the increment of signal transmission delays, crosstalk, and energy consumption. The exploitation of materials with low permittivity (low-k) is crucial for realizing innovations in microelectronics. However, due to the high permittivity of conventional interlayer dielectric material (k ∼ 4.0), it is difficult to meet the demands of current microelectronic technology development (k < 3.0). Organic dielectric materials have attracted much attention because of their relatively low permittivity owing to their low material density and low single bond polarization. Polyimide (PI) exhibits better application potential based on its well permittivity tunability (k = 1.1-3.2), high thermal stability (>500 °C), and mechanical property (modulus of elasticity up to 3.0-4.0 GPa). In this review, based on the synergistic relationship of dielectric parameters of materials, the development of nearly 20 years on low-k PI is thoroughly summarized. Moreover, process strategies for modifying low-k PI at the molecular level, multiphase recombination, and interface engineering are discussed exhaustively. The industrial application, technological challenges, and future development of low-k PI are also analyzed, which will provide meaningful guidance for the design and practical application of multifunctional low-k materials.

Study on the Application of Fluorinated Polyimide in the Acidic Corrosion Protection of 3-nitro-1,2,4-trizole-5-one (NTO)-Based Explosive Formulations

3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) has been widely used as a kind of insensitive single-compound explosive owing to its excellent balance between safety and explosive energy. To reduce its possible acid corrosion and extend its application to insensitive ammunition, acid protection research on NTO-based explosives is significant. Traditionally, the acid protection effect was evaluated by metal corrosion, which is time-consuming and qualitative. An efficient and quantitative method is desirable for evaluating the acid protection effect and exploring novel protection materials. Herein, a polyimide of 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA)/2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4-diaminobiphenyl (TFMB) was synthesized by replacing the 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) monomer with a TFMB monomer to act as an acid-protective coating material for NTO-based explosives. Compared with three other coating materials, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyetherimide (PEI), and copolyimide (P84), the fluorinated polyimide exhibits the best acid protection effect. Moreover, a new method was constructed to obtain the pH time-dependent curve in order to evaluate efficiently the acid protection effect of the polymer materials. By the virtue of molecular dynamic simulation (Materials Studio 2023), the interfacial effects of the coating materials with NTO-based explosives were obtained. The study provides an interpretation of the acid protection effect on the molecular level, suggesting that the higher content of fluorine atoms is beneficial for stabilizing the active hydrogen atom of the NTO by forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

Effects of diamine isomers on the properties of colorless and transparent copoly(amide imide)s

To fully understand the structure–property relationship of aromatic copoly(amide-imide)s (Co-PAIs) and determine which factors lead to chain rigidity, we prepared two series of Co-PAIs. They were synthesized from two types of amine monomers containing m- and p-isomers and different ratios of 4,4′-(hexafluoroiso-propylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 4,4′-biphthalic anhydride (BPA). m-Substituted and p-substituted N,N′-[2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,4′-biphenylene]bis(aminobenzamide) (MPAB) diamine isomers were synthesized from 3- and 4-nitrobenzoyl chloride and 2,2′-bis(trifluoromethyl) benzidine (TFB), respectively. The Co-PAI films were synthesized from poly(amic acid) (PAA), via solution-casting, followed by thermal imidizations. The thermal- and mechanical-properties and optical transparency of the Co-PAI films with different BPA monomer contents were investigated. We also investigated the effects of the different MPAB isomers on the Co-PAI structures. Compared with the m-substituted MPAB Co-PAI films, the p-substituted MPAB Co-PAI films have superior thermo-mechanical properties at the same monomer content. However, the optical transparencies of the m-MPAB Co-PAIs are slightly better than those of the p-MPAB Co-PAIs.
