Regulation of glycose and lipid metabolism and application based on the colloidal nutrition science properties of konjac glucomannan: A comprehensive review

The physicochemical properties of dietary fiber in the gastrointestinal tract, such as hydration properties, adsorption properties, rheological properties, have an important influence on the physiological process of host digestion and absorption, leading to the differences in satiety and glucose and lipid metabolisms. Based on the diversified physicochemical properties of konjac glucomannan (KGM), it is meaningful to review the relationship of structural characteristics, physicochemical properties and glycose and lipid metabolism. Firstly, this paper bypassed the category of intestinal microbes, and explained the potential of dietary fiber in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism during nutrient digestion and absorption from the perspective of colloidal nutrition. Secondly, the modification methods of KGM to regulate its physicochemical properties were discussed and the relationship between KGM's molecular structure types and glycose and lipid metabolism were summarized. Finally, based on the characteristics of KGM, the application of KGM in the main material and ingredients of fat reduction food was reviewed. We hope this work could provide theoretical basis for the study of dietary fiber colloid nutrition science.

Does polysaccharide quaternization improve biological activity?

The natural polysaccharides, due to their structural diversity, commonly present very distinct solubility and physical chemical properties and additionally have intrinsic biological activities that, gene-rally, reveal themselves in a light way. The chemical modification of the molecular structure can improve these parameters. In this review, original articles that approached the quaternization of polysaccharides for purposes of biological application were selected, without limitation of year of publication, in the databases Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed. The results obtained from the bibliographic survey indicate that the increase in positive charges caused by quaternization improves the interaction between modified polysaccharides and structures that have negative charges on their surface, such as the cell wall of microorganisms and some cells in the human body, such as the DNA. This greater interaction is reflected as an increase in the biological activity of all polysaccharides broached in this study. Another important data obtained was the fact that the chemical changes did not affect or irrelevantly affect the toxicity of almost all of the polysaccharides that were quaternized. Therefore, polysaccharide quaternization is a safe and effective way to obtain improvements in the biological behavior of these macromolecules.

Adsorption behavior of copper ions using crown ether-modified konjac glucomannan

A novel supramolecular polysaccharide composite [KGM + DB18C6] was prepared from konjac glucomannan (KGM) and dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) using ceric ammonium nitrate as initiator. The products were characterized by FTIR, TG, DSC, UV-Vis, XRD, solid-state ¹³C NMR, and SEM. Due to the introduction of crown ether, [KGM + DB18C6] showed good adsorption performance for Cu²⁺ in aqueous, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 194 mg/g under the optimal adsorption condition. The adsorption kinetics of [KGM + DB18C6] on Cu²⁺ could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms of [KGM + DB18C6] on Cu²⁺ followed the dual-site Langmuir-Freundlich model. In addition, high recoveries of Cu²⁺ (from 82.65 to 88.47%), and low relative standard deviation (below 5.00%) were obtained by applying the product in real samples, indicating that [KGM + DB18C6] was a good absorbent for removing Cu²⁺ in wastewater.
