Abstract
A new supramolecular antioxidant bioconjugate based on cellulose nanowhisker (CNW) and gallic acid (GA) was developed by grafting β-CD on the surface of CNW and then employing host- guest chemistry to involve GA. Our challenge was to explore the effect of supramolecular conjugation of antioxidant molecules versus their covalent binding on the CNW backbone on the antioxidant activity. The synthesis of these products was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The antioxidant activity of gallic acid (GA) containing products, both products including its non-covalent interactions with CNW-g-β-CD and covalent bonding with CNW were experimentally evaluated using DPPH test. Theoretical calculations using Gaussian software and the density functional theory (DFT) method were also performed. The results showed that GA's antioxidant activity increased in non-covalent conjugated form. Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) was used to predict the antioxidant activity of GA in computational methods. These findings not only expand our understanding of the structure-activity relationships in antioxidant systems but also provide valuable insights that can aid in the design and development of novel biopolymer-based antioxidants with improved properties.

Abstract
In order to cope with the increasingly severe food contamination and safety problems, a powerful sterilization of food packaging material is urgently needed. Chitosan (CS) has potential applications in food packaging due to its good film-forming properties, but its antibacterial activity is not sufficient to meet the needs in practical applications. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have the problem of weak immediate antibacterial activity as a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent. Therefore, in this study, AgNPs@GA@Cur-POTS (AGCP) composite antibacterial system was prepared by combining AgNPs with antibacterial photodynamic therapy using gallic acid (GA) as a reducing agent, curcumin (Cur) as a photosensitizer and perfluorosilane (POTS) for surface modification. The results showed that AGCP could produce a large number of reactive oxygen species under blue light irradiation, killing >90 % of E. coli and S. aureus within 2 h. Subsequently, the composite film of CS loaded with AGCP (CS/AGCP) was prepared by the flow-delay method. The CS/AGCP composite film exhibited excellent barrier properties and antioxidant activity, while its antibacterial rates against E. coli and S. aureus reached 98.44 ± 1.27 % and 99.11 ± 0.24 %, respectively, while the OD630 values of the two groups of bacteria treated with it showed no significant increase in incubation for up to 132 h, exhibiting remarkable and sustained antibacterial effects. Taken together, this work will provide a new strategy for antibacterial food packaging.

Abstract
The dynamic development of the food industry and the growing interest of consumers in innovative solutions that increase the comfort and quality of life push the industry towards seeking pioneering solutions in the field of food packaging. Intelligent and active packaging, which affects the quality and durability of food products and allows one to determine their freshness, is still a modern concept. The aim of our study was to obtain two types of films based on chitosan and starch with micellar nanostructures containing extracts from turmeric rhizomes and hibiscus flowers. The presence of spherical nanostructures was confirmed using a scanning electron microscope. The structural and optical properties of the obtained composites were characterised by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), UltraViolet-Visible (UV-VIS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed the presence of spherical micellar structures with a size of about 800 nm in the obtained biocomposites. The presence of nano-/microstructures containing extracts affected the mechanical properties of the composites: it weakened the strength of the films and improved their elongation at break (EAB). Films with nano-/microparticles were characterised by a higher water content compared to the control sample and lower solubility, and they showed stronger hydrophilic properties. Preliminary storage tests showed that the obtained biocomposites are sensitive to changes occurring during the storage of products such as cheese or fish. In addition, it was found that the film with the addition of turmeric extract inhibited the growth of microorganisms during storage. The results suggest that the obtained bionanocomposites can be used as active and/or intelligent materials.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and characterise bionanocomposites based on chitosan (CHIT) and alginate (ALG) in two series, which were subsequently functionalised with emulsions based on a combination of water, oil, ozonated oil and hibiscus flower extracts. The structure and morphology of the materials produced were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultraviolet and visible light (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, along with a surface colour analysis and the determination of the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting composites. Functionalisation did affect the analysed composite parameters. The FTIR spectra indicated that the polysaccharide matrix components were compatible. The SEM images also confirmed the presence of nano/microcapsules in the polysaccharide matrix. The obtained results indicate that the order of adding polysaccharides has a significant impact on the encapsulation capacity. The encapsulation resulted in the improved thermal stability of the composites. The emissions analysis showed that the composites containing nano/microcapsules are characterised by a higher emission intensity and are sensitive to acid or base changes. Significant differences in emission intensity were observed even at low concentrations of acids and bases. A drop in the mechanical properties was observed following functionalisation. The results of this study suggest that these bionanocomposites can be used as active and/or smart packaging materials.

Abstract
In the era of growing plastic consumption, food waste by consumers and overproduction caused by economic reasons, the global goal is to decrease these phenomena. Biocomposite films investigated in the past years are creating a promising future toward ecological, intelligent and active packaging. Due to their unique properties, they can be used in many areas of our life and reduce the constantly increasing pollution of our planet. The aim of our study was to obtain innovative and flexible biopolymer films based on sodium alginate and chitosan, as well as to develop methods for generating nanocapsules with turmeric extract in them. Bionanocomposites were analyzed using UV-VIS, FTIR, photoluminescence spectroscopy and SEM microscopy, while contact angles, surface free energy, particle size (DLS) and zeta potential were determined. The mechanical and colorimetric properties of the produced films were investigated, and the water content, solubility and water absorption were determined. Microbiological tests were carried out to analyze the influence of the produced films on the development of microorganisms. The results of the performed analyses allowed us to confirm the presence of curcumin nano- and microcapsules in the alginate-chitosan composite. Moreover, studies have shown that the structure of polysaccharides does not change during capsule manufacturing. The film with the highest concentration of the capsules showed better parameters in tests of solubility, water content, degree of swelling and mechanical properties. The obtained properties of the developed films allow them to be used as active and intelligent packaging materials, or as their parts.

Abstract
This study investigated the release characteristics of curcumin (CUR)-loaded switchable poly(methyl methacrylate)-co-poly(N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PMMA-co-PDEAEMA) membranes following the application of various stimuli, as well as the platform's applicability in wound dressing and tissue engineering applications. The free-radical polymerization method was used to synthesize the PMMA-co-PDEAEMA copolymer. The drug-loaded nanofibrous membrane with electric potential (EP)-, CO2-, and pH-responsive properties was developed by the electrospinning of PMMA-co-PDEAEMA and CUR. The resulted structure was characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements. The release characteristics of the CUR-loaded wound covering were analyzed in various simulated environments at varying voltages, alternated CO2/N2 gas bubbling, and at two different pH values; the results demonstrated high drug release controllability. Loaded CUR displayed high stability and better solubility compared with free CUR. The CUR-loaded tissue also exhibited high antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In addition, the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay depicted high biocompatibility of up to 95% in the CUR-loaded membrane. This platform could be a promising candidate for usage in tissue engineering and medical applications such as targeted drug delivery, biodetection, reversible cell capture-and-release systems, and biosensors.

Abstract
Rutin is a natural flavonoid that carries out a variety of biological activities, but its application in medicine and food is limited by its water solubility. One of the classical methods used to enhance drug solubility is encapsulation with cyclodextrins. In this paper, the encapsulation of different cyclodextrins with rutin was investigated using a combination of experimental and simulation methods. Three inclusions of rutin/beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD), rutin/2-hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and rutin/2,6-dimethyl beta-cyclodextrin (DM-β-CD) were prepared by the freeze-drying method, and the inclusions were analyzed using Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV) to characterize and demonstrate the formation of the inclusion complexes. Phase solubility studies showed that rutin formed a 1:1 stoichiometric inclusion complex and significantly increased its solubility. β-CD, HP-β-CD, DM-β-CD, rutin and the three inclusion complexes were modeled by using MS2018 and AutoDock 4.0, and molecular dynamics simulations were performed to calculate the solubility parameters, binding energies, mean square displacement (MSD), hydrogen bonding and radial distribution functions (RDF) after the equilibration of the systems. The results of simulation and experiment showed that rutin/DM-β-CD had the best encapsulation effect among the three cyclodextrin inclusion complexes.

Abstract
Nowadays, supramolecular hydrogels have gained special importance and development of versatile approaches for their preparation as well as their new facile characterization strategies has elicited tremendous scientific interest. Herein, we demonstrate that modified cellulose nanowhisker with gallic acid pendant groups (CNW-GA) could effectively bind with CNW grafted with β-Cyclodextrin (CNW-g-β-CD) through HG interaction to form fully biocompatible and low-cost supramolecular hydrogel. Also, we reported an easy and efficient colorimetric characterization method for confirming HG complexation using naked eye. The possibility of this characterization strategy evaluated both experimentally and theoretically using DFT method. Also, phenolphthalein (PP) was used for visual detection of HG complexation. Interestingly, PP undergoes a rearrangement in its structure in presence of CNW-g-β-CD because of HG complexation that turns the purple molecule into a colorless compound in alkaline condition. Addition of CNW-GA to the resulting colorless solution turned the color to purple again which easily confirmed HG formation.

To overcome the low water solubility and low bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), multiple delivery strategies have been proposed. Among these, cyclodextrin-based carriers have been widely used for the encapsulation and delivery of CUR. Cyclodextrins (CDs), as natural oligosaccharides, have been well known for their biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and internal hydrophobic and external hydrophilic structural features. This paper summarizes the recently reported CD-based carriers for encapsulating CUR. Particularly, the polymerization properties of CD self-assembly to enhance the encapsulation of CUR are discussed. In addition, the current progress on stimuli-responsive CD carriers for controlled release of CUR is described, which laid an important foundation for the development of CUR-based precision therapy in clinical practice. In conclusion, this review may provide ideas for the future development of a CD-based encapsulant for CUR.

Abstract
Curcumin (CUR), a curcuminoid originating from turmeric root, possesses diverse pharmacological applications, including potent anticancer properties. However, the use of this efficacious agent in cancer therapy has been limited due to low water solubility and poor bioavailability. To overcome these problems, a drug delivery system was established as an excipient allowing improved dispersion in aqueous media coupled with enhanced in vitro anticancer effects. Different analyses such as UV-vis spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), solubility and dissolution assays were determined to monitor the successful encapsulation of CUR within the inner cavity of a β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) complex. The results indicated that water solubility was improved by 205.75-fold compared to pure CUR. Based on cytotoxicity data obtained from MTT assays, the inclusion complex exhibited a greater decrease in cancer cell viability compared to pure CUR. Moreover, cancer cell migration rates were decreased by 75.5% and 38.92%, invasion rates were decreased by 37.7% and 35.7%, while apoptosis rates were increased by 26.3% and 14.2%, and both caused caspase 3 activation toward colorectal cancer cells (SW480 and HCT116 cells). This efficacious formulation that enables improved aqueous dispersion is potentially useful and can be extended for various chemotherapeutic applications. Preliminary toxicity evaluation also indicated that its composition can be safely used in humans for cancer therapy.

Abstract
The present investigation demonstrates the development of crosslinked β-cyclodextrin nanoparticles (β-CD NPs) for enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of docetaxel (DTX) against breast cancer. Initially, a partial inclusion complex between β-CD and polypropylene glycol (PPG) was formed to induce self-assembly. This was followed by crosslinking of β-CDs using epichlorohydrin (EPI) and removal (by solubilization) of PPG to yield uniform β-CD NPs. The formed particles were used for loading DTX to form DTX β-CD NPs. The resultant DTX β-CD NPs exhibited particle size of 223.36 ± 17.73 nm with polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.13 ± 0.09 and showed entrapment efficiency of 54.53 ± 2%. Increased cell uptake (~5-fold), cytotoxicity (~3.3-fold), and apoptosis were observed in MDA-MB-231 cells when treated with DTX β-CD NPs in comparison to free DTX. Moreover, pharmacokinetic evaluation of DTX β-CD NPs revealed ~2 and ~5-fold increase in AUC0-∞ and mean residence time (MRT) of DTX when compared to Docepar®. Further, the anti-tumor activity using DMBA-induced cancer model showed that DTX β-CD NPs were capable of reducing the tumor volume to ~40%, whereas Docepar® was able to reduce tumor volume till ~80%. Finally, the toxicity evaluation of DTX β-CD NPs revealed no short-term nephrotoxicity and was confirmed by estimating the levels of biomarkers and histopathology of the organs. Thus, the proposed formulation strategy can yield uniformly formed β-CD NPs which can be effectively utilized for improving the therapeutic efficacy of DTX.

Abstract
Gallic acid (GA) and quercetin (QC) were used as active ingredients in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film formulations obtained by solvent casting process. The effect of two different percentages (5 and 10 % wt.) on morphological behavior, thermal stability, optical, mechanical, and release properties of PVA were investigated, while migration with food stimulants and antioxidant properties were tested taking into account the final application as food packaging systems. The results showed how different dispersability in PVA water solutions gave different results in term of deformability (mean value of ε PVA/5GA = 280% and ε PVA/5QC = 255%, with 190% for neat PVA), comparable values for antioxidant activity at the high contents (Radical Scavenging Activity, RSA(%) PVA/10GA = 95 and RSA(%) PVA/10QC = 91) and different coloring attitude of the polymeric films. It was proved that GA, even if it represents the best antioxidant ingredient to be used with PVA and can be easily dispersed in water, it gives more rigid films in comparison to QC, that indeed was more efficient in tuning the deformability of the PVA films, due the presence of sole hydroxyl groups carrying agent. The deviation of the film coloring towards greenish tones for GA films and redness for QC films after 7 and within 21 days in the simulated conditions confirmed the possibility of using easy processable PVA films as active and intelligent films in food packaging.
