Design and preparation of UV-curable waterborne polyurethane based on novel fluorinated chain extender

Biodegradable and Electrically Conductive Melanin-Poly (3-Hydroxybutyrate) 3D Fibrous Scaffolds for Neural Tissue Engineering Applications

Due to the severity of peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) and spinal cord injuries (SCI), treatment options for patients are limited. In this context, biomaterials designed to promote regeneration and reinstate the lost function are being explored. Such biomaterials should be able to mimic the biological, chemical, and physical cues of the extracellular matrix for maximum effectiveness as therapeutic agents. Development of biomaterials with desirable physical, chemical, and electrical properties, however, has proven challenging. Here a novel biomaterial formulation achieved by blending the pigment melanin and the natural polymer Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) is proposed. Physio-chemical measurements of electrospun fibers reveal a feature rich surface nano-topography, a semiconducting-nature, and brain-tissue-like poroviscoelastic properties. Resulting fibers improve cell adhesion and growth of mouse sensory and motor neurons, without any observable toxicity. Further, the presence of polar functional groups positively affect the kinetics of fibers degradation at a pH (≈7.4) comparable to that of body fluids. Thus, melanin-PHB blended scaffolds are found to be physio-chemically, electrically, and biologically compatible with neural tissues and could be used as a regenerative modality for neural tissue injuries. A biomaterial for scaffolds intended to promote regeneration of nerve tissue after injury is developed. This biomaterial, obtained by mixing the pigment melanin and the natural polymer PHB, is biodegradable, electrically conductive, and beneficial to the growth of motor and sensory neurons. Thus, it is believed that this biomaterial can be used in the context of healthcare applications.

Preparation and Characterization of Water-borne Polyurethane Based on Benzotriazole as Pendant Group with Different N-Alkylated Chain Extenders and Its Application in Anticorrosion

A series of novel anti-corrosive coatings were synthesized successfully. Water-borne polyurethane (WPU) was synthesized using polyethylene glycol and modified by grafting benzotriazole (BTA) as a pendant group (WPU-g-BTA) and N-alkylated amines (ethylene diamine (A), diethylene triamine (B), triethylene tetramine (C)) as side-chain extenders. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic mechanical analyses were used to characterize the structural and thermomechanical properties of the samples. A gas permeability analyzer (GPA) was used to evaluate molecular barrier properties. The corrosion inhibition performance of WPU-g-BTA-A, WPU-g-BTA-B, and WPU-g-BTA-C coatings in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was determined by electrochemical measurements. WPU-g-BTA-C coating synthesized with a high cross-linking density showed superior anticorrosive performance. The as-prepared coatings exhibited a very low icorr value of 0.02 µA.cm−2, a high Ecorr value of −0.02 V, as well as excellent inhibition efficiency (99.972%) and impedance (6.33 Ω) after 30 min of exposure.

Mucoadhesive brinzolamide-loaded nanofibers for alternative glaucoma treatment

Despite the advances in the field of pharmaceutical materials and technology, topical administration remains a method of choice for the treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, with eye drops being a leading dosage form. Their main disadvantage is a very short drug residence time and thus poor drug bioavailability, leading to the necessity of continuous repeated dosing. Mucoadhesive electrospun nanofibers are promising candidates for overcoming these challenges, while still benefiting from topical ocular administration. As an alternative for eye drops, a nanofibrous drug delivery system (DDS) for the delivery of brinzolamide (BRZ), based on β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and polycaprolactone (PCL), was designed. The results showed β-CD/BRZ guest-host interactions, successful drug incorporation into the nanofibers, and the possibility of more accurate dosing in comparison with the control eye drops. Drug permeation through sheep corneas was almost linear in time, achieving therapeutic concentrations in the receptor medium, and mucoadhesion to sheep eye mucosa was relatively high in case of formulations with high HPC content. All formulations were biocompatible, their mechanical properties were sufficient to handle them without caution and UV irradiation was suitable to reduce bioburden of the fibers matrix, yet no antibacterial properties of BRZ were observed.
