Composite Contrast Enhancement of Hydrogel-Based Implants for Photon-Counting Computed Tomography Studies

Hydrogels have a wide range of medical applications, including use within implantable systems. However, when used in implants, their visibility under conventional medical imaging techniques is limited, creating safety risks for patients. In the current work, we assessed the possibility of enhancing hydrogels using Ln-based contrasting agents to facilitate their visualization in photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT). The contrast enhancement of gelatin, polyacrylamide (PAM), and silicone shells of implants was assessed. A novel synthetic route for producing cross-linked nanosized Ln2O3 with polyacrylamide was proposed and discussed in detail. Several prototypes of silicone implants, including silicone shell and gelatin or PAM filling with different combinations of contrasting agents, were produced and assessed in phantom PCCT studies.

Adsorption of lead ions from wastewater using electrospun zeolite/MWCNT nanofibers: kinetics, thermodynamics and modeling study

Heavy metal contamination in water is a serious environmental issue due to the toxicity of metals like lead. This study developed zeolite and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) incorporated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers via needleless electrospinning and examined their potential for lead ion adsorption from aqueous solutions. The adsorption process was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling approaches. The adsorbent displayed efficient lead removal of 84.75% under optimum conditions (adsorbent dose (2.21 g), adsorption time (207 min), temperature (48 °C), and initial concentration (62 ppm)). Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption followed pseudo-first-order kinetics governed by interparticle diffusion. Isotherm analysis indicated Langmuir monolayer adsorption with improved 5.90 mg g-1 capacity compared to pristine PAN nanofibers. Thermodynamic parameters suggested the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. This work demonstrates the promise of electrospun zeolite/MWCNT nanofibers as adsorbents for removing lead from wastewater.

Preparation of Templated Materials and Their Application to Typical Pollutants in Wastewater: A Review

As the pollution and destruction of global water resources become more and more severe, the treatment of wastewater has attracted significant attention. The template method is a synthetic method in which the template is the main configuration to control, influence, and modify the morphology as well as control the dimensions of the material, thus achieving the properties that determine the material. It is simple, highly reproducible, and predictable, and more importantly, it can effectively control the pore structure, size, and morphology of the material, providing a novel platform for the preparation of adsorbent materials with excellent adsorption properties. This review focuses on the classification of the templates according to their properties and spatial domain-limiting capabilities, reviews the types of hard and soft template materials and their synthetic routes, and further discusses the modulation of the morphological structure of the materials by the introduction of templates. In addition, the application and adsorption mechanisms of heavy metal ions and dyes are reviewed based on the regulatory behavior of the template method.
