Polylactic acid (PLA) membrane—significance, synthesis, and applications: a review

Synthesis of novel L-lactic acid-based plasticizers and their effects on the flexibility, crystallinity, and optical transparency of poly(lactic acid)

Using bio-based plasticizers derived from biomass resources to replace traditional phthalates can avoid the biotoxicity and non-biodegradability caused by the migration of plasticizers during the application of plastics. In this study, L-lactic acid and levulinic acid were employed as the major biomass monomer to successfully fabricate L-lactic acid-based plasticizers (LBL-n, n = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5) containing a diverse number of lactate groups. The plasticizing mechanism was explained, manifesting that L-lactic acid-based plasticizers containing a substantial number of lactate groups could effectively improve the flexibility of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), and the elongation at break was 590 %-750 %. Compared to LBL-1.5 plasticized-PLA films, the tensile strength and modulus of ketonized-LBL-1.5 (KLBL-1.5) plasticized-PLA films increased to 59 % and 163 %, indicating the ketal functionality of plasticizers enhanced the strength of PLA. Meanwhile, the increment of lactate groups and the introduction of the ketal group in the plasticizer increased the crystallization, migration, and volatilization stability of plasticized-PLA films and also kept their outstanding optical transparency. Besides, the biodegradability of KLBL-1.5 was investigated by active soil and Tenebrio molitor experiments, and its degradation products were characterized. The findings indicated that KLBL-1.5 was fully decomposed. Taken together, this paper offers new promise for developing high-efficiency and biodegradable plasticizers.

Development of an UV-Resistant Multilayer Film with Enhanced Compatibility between Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Polylactic Acid via Incorporation of Tannin and Ferric Chloride

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polylactic acid (PLA) are recognized for their environmental friendliness. By merging them into a composite film, packaging solutions can be designed with good performance. Nonetheless, the inherent interface disparity between CMC and PLA poses a challenge, and there may be layer separation issues. This study introduces a straightforward approach to mitigate this challenge by incorporating tannin acid and ferric chloride in the fabrication of the CMC-PLA. The interlayer compatibility was improved by the in situ formation of a cohesive interface. The resulting CMC/TA-PLA/Fe multilayer film, devoid of any layer separation, exhibits exceptional mechanical strength, with a tensile strength exceeding 70 MPa, a high contact angle of 105°, and superior thermal stability. Furthermore, the CMC/TA-PLA/Fe film demonstrates remarkable efficacy in blocking ultraviolet light, effectively minimizing the discoloration of various wood surfaces exposed to UV aging.

Evaluation and Modeling of Polylactide Photodegradation under Ultraviolet Irradiation: Bio-Based Polyester Photolysis Mechanism

In our study, we investigated the accelerated aging process of PLA under 253.7 nm UV-C irradiation with the use of the GPC, NMR, FTIR, and DSC methods and formal kinetic analysis. The results of GPC and DSC indicated a significant degree of destructive changes in the PLA macromolecules, while spectroscopic methods NMR and FTIR showed maintenance of the PLA main structural elements even after a long time of UV exposure. In addition to that, the GPC method displayed the formation of a high molecular weight fraction starting from 24 h of irradiation, and an increase in its content after 144 h of irradiation. It has been shown for the first time that a distinctive feature of prolonged UV exposure is the occurrence of intra- and intermolecular radical recombination reactions, leading to the formation of a high molecular weight fraction of PLA decomposition products. This causes the observed slowdown of the photolysis process. It was concluded that photolysis of PLA is a complex physicochemical process, the mechanism of which depends on morphological changes in the solid phase of the polymer under UV radiation.

Modified Biomass-Reinforced Polylactic Acid Composites

Polylactic acid (PLA), as a renewable and biodegradable green polymer material, is hailed as one of the most promising biopolymers capable of replacing petroleum-derived polymers for industrial applications. Nevertheless, its limited toughness, thermal stability, and barrier properties have restricted its extensive application. To address these drawbacks in PLA, research efforts have primarily focused on enhancing its properties through copolymerization, blending, and plasticization. Notably, the blending of modified biomass with PLA is expected not only to effectively improve its deficiencies but also to maintain its biodegradability, creating a fully green composite with substantial developmental prospects. This review provides a comprehensive overview of modified biomass-reinforced PLA, with an emphasis on the improvements in PLA's mechanical properties, thermal stability, and barrier properties achieved through modified cellulose, lignin, and starch. At the end of the article, a brief exploration of plasma modification of biomass is presented and provides a promising outlook for the application of reinforced PLA composite materials in the future. This review provides valuable insights regarding the path towards enhancing PLA.

Aloe vera mucilage loaded gelatin electrospun fibers contained in polylactic acid coaxial system and polylactic acid and poly(e-caprolactone) tri-layer membranes for tissue engineering

BACKGROUND

Polymeric electrospun mats have been used as scaffolds in tissue engineering for the development of novel materials due to its characteristics. The usage of synthetic materials has gone in decline due to environmental problems associated with their synthesis and waste disposal. Biomaterials such as biopolymers have been used recently due to good compatibility on biological applications and sustainability.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this work is to obtain novel materials based on synthetic and natural polymers for applications on tissue engineering.

METHODS

Aloe vera mucilage was obtained, chemically characterized, and used as an active compound contained in electrospun mats. Polymeric scaffolds were obtained in single, coaxial and tri-layer structures, characterized and evaluated in cell culture.

RESULTS

Mucilage loaded electrospun fibers showed good compatibility due to formation of hydrogen bonds between polymers and biomolecules from its structure, evidenced by FTIR spectra and thermal properties. Cell viability test showed that most of the obtained mats result on viability higher than 75%, resulting in nontoxic materials, ready to be used on scaffolding applications.

CONCLUSION

Mucilage containing fibers resulted on materials with potential use on scaffolding applications due to their mechanical performance and cell viability results.

Nanocomposites with Optimized Polytetrafluoroethylene Content as a Reinforcement Agent in PA12 and PLA for Material Extrusion Additive Manufacturing

Herein, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is evaluated as a reinforcement agent in material extrusion (MEX) additive manufacturing (AM), aiming to develop nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical performance. Loadings up to 4.0 wt.% were introduced as fillers of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyamide 12 (PA12) matrices. Filaments for MEX AM were prepared to produce corresponding 3D-printed samples. For the thorough characterization of the nanocomposites, a series of standardized mechanical tests were followed, along with AFM, TGA, Raman spectroscopy, EDS, and SEM analyses. The results showed an improved mechanical response for filler concentrations between 2.0 and 3.0 wt.%. The enhancement for the PLA/PTFE 2.0 wt.% in the tensile strength reached 21.1% and the modulus of elasticity 25.5%; for the PA12/PTFE 3.0 wt.%, 34.1%, and 41.7%, respectively. For PLA/PTFE 2.0 wt.%, the enhancement in the flexural strength reached 57.6% and the modulus of elasticity 25.5%; for the PA12/PTFE 3.0 wt.%, 14.7%, and 17.2%, respectively. This research enables the ability to deploy PTFE as a reinforcement agent in the PA12 and PLA thermoplastic engineering polymers in the MEX AM process, expanding the potential applications.

Recent advances in modified poly (lactic acid) as tissue engineering materials

As an emerging science, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine focus on developing materials to replace, restore or improve organs or tissues and enhancing the cellular capacity to proliferate, migrate and differentiate into different cell types and specific tissues. Renewable resources have been used to develop new materials, resulting in attempts to produce various environmentally friendly biomaterials. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is a biopolymer known to be biodegradable and it is produced from the fermentation of carbohydrates. PLA can be combined with other polymers to produce new biomaterials with suitable physicochemical properties for tissue engineering applications. Here, the advances in modified PLA as tissue engineering materials are discussed in light of its drawbacks, such as biological inertness, low cell adhesion, and low degradation rate, and the efforts conducted to address these challenges toward the design of new enhanced alternative biomaterials.

Development of Functional Hybrid Polymers and Gel Materials for Sustainable Membrane-Based Water Treatment Technology: How to Combine Greener and Cleaner Approaches

Water quality and disposability are among the main challenges that governments and societies will outside during the next years due to their close relationship to population growth and urbanization and their direct influence on the environment and socio-economic development. Potable water suitable for human consumption is a key resource that, unfortunately, is strongly limited by anthropogenic pollution and climate change. In this regard, new groups of compounds, referred to as emerging contaminants, represent a risk to human health and living species; they have already been identified in water bodies as a result of increased industrialization. Pesticides, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, organic dyes, and other man-made chemicals indispensable for modern society are among the emerging pollutants of difficult remediation by traditional methods of wastewater treatment. However, the majority of the currently used waste management and remediation techniques require significant amounts of energy and chemicals, which can themselves be sources of secondary pollution. Therefore, this review reported newly advanced, efficient, and sustainable techniques and approaches for water purification. In particular, new advancements in sustainable membrane-based filtration technologies are discussed, together with their modification through a rational safe-by-design to modulate their hydrophilicity, porosity, surface characteristics, and adsorption performances. Thus, their preparation by the use of biopolymer-based gels is described, as well as their blending with functional cross-linkers or nanofillers or by advanced and innovative approaches, such as electrospinning.

Synergistic modification of polylactic acid by oxidized straw fibers and degradable elastomers: A green composite with good strength and toughness

Polylactic acid-based (PLA) composites are widely used in biomedicine, electrical components, food packaging and other fields, but their unsatisfactory mechanical properties such as high brittleness and poor toughness, cause problems in functional applications. This work developed a green and environmentally friendly strategy to improve PLA mechanical properties. Flexible polybutylene succinate (PBS) and alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) treated straw fibers (SF) synergistically modified PLA. AHP is decomposed into a large amount of HOO-, which oxidizes the hydroxyl groups in SF to carboxyl groups to obtain oxidized straw fiber (OSF), which reacts with PLA in the molten state to form new ester bonds. The tensile strength of the OSF/PLA composite is 41.78 MPa, 38 % higher than the SF/PLA composite. The impact toughness of OSF/PBS/PLA composite is 14.47 KJ/m² increased by 54 % after the adding PBS, while the tensile strength was also better than the control group. The synergistic action of PLA and PBS in OSF is attributed to the formation of new chemical bonds, efficient crystallization, and compatible interface. This study provides a new strategy to produce fiber-reinforced PLA composites with good toughness. It takes positive significance for developing degradable plastics with good performance and controllable cost.
