Abstract
Karrikins (KARs) were first identified as a class of small-molecule chemicals derived from smoke that promote seed germination. However, the implied mechanism is still not well understood. Here, we find that KAR signaling mutants have a lower germination percentage than that of wild type under weak light conditions, and KARs promote seed germination through transcriptional activation of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis via SMAX1. SMAX1 interacts with the DELLA proteins REPRESSOR of ga1-3-LIKE 1 (RGL1) and RGL3. The interaction enhances the transcriptional activity of SMAX1 and inhibits GIBBERELLIN 3-oxidase 2 (GA3ox2) gene expression. The KAR signaling mutant seed germination defect under weak light is partially rescued by exogenous application of GA3 or by GA3ox2 overexpression, and the rgl1 rgl3 smax1 triple mutant exhibits higher germination rates under weak light than the smax1 mutant. Thus, we show a crosstalk between KAR and GA signaling pathways via a SMAX1-DELLA module in regulating seed germination in Arabidopsis.

Abstract
Rice is one of the most essential crops since it meets the calorific needs of 3 billion people around the world. Rice seed development initiates upon fertilization, leading to the establishment of two distinct filial tissues, the endosperm and embryo, which accumulate distinct seed storage products, such as starch, storage proteins, and lipids. A range of systems biology tools deployed in dissecting the spatiotemporal dynamics of transcriptome data, methylation, and small RNA based regulation operative during seed development, influencing the accumulation of storage products was reviewed. Studies of other model systems are also considered due to the limited information on the rice transcriptome. This review highlights key genes identified through a holistic view of systems biology targeted to modify biochemical composition and influence rice grain quality and nutritional value with the target of improving rice as a functional food.

Abstract
Hidden hunger, or micronutrient deficiency, is a worldwide problem. Several approaches are employed to alleviate its effects (e.g., promoting diet diversity, use of dietary supplements, chemical fortification of processed food), and among these, biofortification is considered as one of the most cost-effective and highly sustainable. Rice is one of the best targets for biofortification since it is a staple food for almost half of the world’s population as a high-energy source but with low nutritional value. Multiple biofortified rice lines have been produced during the past decades, while few studies also reported modifications in germination behavior (in terms of enhanced or decreased germination percentage or speed). It is important to underline that rapid, uniform germination, and seedling establishment are essential prerequisites for crop productivity. Combining the two traits, biofortified, highly-nutritious seeds with improved germination behavior can be envisaged as a highly-desired target for rice breeding. To this purpose, information gathered from transcriptomics studies can reveal useful insights to unveil the molecular players governing both traits. The present review aims to provide an overview of transcriptomics studies applied at the crossroad between biofortification and seed germination, pointing out potential candidates for trait pyramiding.

Abstract
Seed's maturity and integrity are essential requirements for germination, and they rely on nutrients availability and a correct phytohormones' balance. These aspects are prerequisites for prompt germination at the end of the dormancy period and strictly depend on chloroplast metabolism and photosynthesis. In the present work, capsules of Nicotiana tabacum were grown in dark during the whole post-anthesis period. Among others, photosynthetic rates, dormancy, and phytohormones levels in seeds were found to be significantly different with respect to controls. In particular, etiolated capsules had expectedly reduced photosynthetic rates and, when compared to controls, their seeds had an increased mass and volume, an alteration in hormones level, and a consequently reduced dormancy. The present findings show how, during fruit development, the presence of light and the related fruit's photosynthetic activity play an indirect but essential role for reaching seeds maturity and dormancy. Results highlight how unripe fruits are versatile organs that, depending on the environmental conditions, may facultatively behave as sink or source/sink with associated variation in seed's reserves and phytohormone levels.

Abstract
Seeds serve as biochemical factories of nutrition, processing, bio-energy and storage related important bio-molecules and act as a delivery system to transmit the genetic information to the next generation. The research pertaining towards delineating the complex system of regulation of genes and pathways related to seed biology and nutrient partitioning is still under infancy. To understand these, it is important to know the genes and pathway(s) involved in the homeostasis of bio-molecules. In recent past with the advent and advancement of modern tools of genomics and genetic engineering, multi-layered 'omics' approaches and high-throughput platforms are being used to discern the genes and proteins involved in various metabolic, and signaling pathways and their regulations for understanding the molecular genetics of biosynthesis and homeostasis of bio-molecules. This can be possible by exploring systems biology approaches via the integration of omics data for understanding the intricacy of seed development and nutrient partitioning. These information can be exploited for the improvement of biologically important chemicals for large-scale production of nutrients and nutraceuticals through pathway engineering and biotechnology. This review article thus describes different omics tools and other branches that are merged to build the most attractive area of research towards establishing the seeds as biochemical factories for human health and nutrition.
