Sensitivity analysis of ecosystem CO2 exchange to climate change in High Arctic tundra using an ecological process-based model

Effects of Prescribed Burning on Soil CO2 Emissions from Pinus yunnanensis Forestland in Central Yunnan, China

The effects of low-intensity and high-frequency prescribed burning on the soil CO2 emissions from Pinus yunnanensis forestland should be explored to achieve sustainable operation and management under fire disturbance. A Li-6400XT portable photosynthesis meter (equipped with a Li-6400-09 soil respiration chamber) and a TRIME®-PICO 64/32 soil temperature and moisture meter were used to measure the soil CO2 flux, soil temperature, and soil moisture at fixed observation sites in two treatments (i.e., unburned (UB) and after prescribed burning (AB)) in a Pinus yunnanensis forest of Zhaobi Mountain, Xinping County, Yunnan, China from March 2019 to February 2021. We also determined the relationships between the soil CO2 flux and soil hydrothermal factors. The results showed that (1) the soil CO2 flux in both UB and AB plots exhibited a significant unimodal trend of seasonal variations. In 2020, the highest soil CO2 fluxes occurred in September; they were 7.08 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 in the morning and 7.63 μmol CO2·m−2·s−1 in the afternoon in the AB treatment, which was significantly lower than those in the UB treatment (p < 0.05). The AB and the UB treatment showed no significant differences in annual soil carbon flux (p > 0.05). (2) The relationship between the soil CO2 flux and moisture in the AB and UB plots was best fitted by a quadratic function, with a degree of fitting between 0.435 and 0.753. The soil CO2 flux and soil moisture showed an inverted U-shaped correlation in the UB plot (p < 0.05) but a positive correlation in the AB plot (p < 0.05). Soil moisture was the key factor affecting the soil CO2 flux (p < 0.05), while soil temperature showed no significant effect on soil CO2 flux in this area (p > 0.05). Therefore, the application of low-intensity prescribed burning for fire hazard reduction in this region achieved the objective without causing a persistent and drastic increase in the soil CO2 emissions. The results could provide important theoretical support for scientific implementation of prescribed burning, as well as scientific evaluation of ecological and environmental effects after prescribed burning.

Microscale drivers of summer CO2 fluxes in the Svalbard High Arctic tundra

High-Arctic ecosystems are strongly affected by climate change, and it is still unclear whether they will become a carbon source or sink in the next few decades. In turn, such knowledge gaps on the drivers and the processes controlling CO₂ fluxes and storage make future projections of the Arctic carbon budget a challenging goal. During summer 2019, we extensively measured CO₂ fluxes at the soil–vegetation–atmosphere interface, together with basic meteoclimatic variables and ecological characteristics in the Bayelva river basin near Ny Ålesund, Spitzbergen, Svalbard (NO). By means of multi-regression models, we identified the main small-scale drivers of CO₂ emission (Ecosystem Respiration, ER), and uptake (Gross Primary Production, GPP) in this tundra biome, showing that (i) at point scale, the temporal variability of fluxes is controlled by the classical drivers, i.e. air temperature and solar irradiance respectively for ER and GPP, (ii) at site scale, the heterogeneity of fractional vegetation cover, soil moisture and vegetation type acted as additional source of variability for both CO₂ emissions and uptake. The assessment of the relative importance of such drivers in the multi-regression model contributes to a better understanding of the terrestrial carbon dioxide exchanges and of Critical Zone processes in the Arctic tundra.

Effects of climate warming on the production of the pioneer moss Racomitrium japonicum: seasonal and year-to-year variations

Pioneer mosses are among the dominant vegetation in the early stages of xeric successions. Recent climate warming may have a significant effect on the productivity of these mosses, thereby affecting successional processes. In this study, we investigated the effects of temperature changes on the productivity of Racomitrium japonicum, a pioneer moss species commonly found on open ground in Japan. We examined the microclimate (moss temperature and water content) of a natural R. japonicum stand in Higashi-Hiroshima City, western Japan, and related them to the climate records of the weather station to create a model for estimating microclimate from past climatic data. We also examined the effects of environmental factors (light, temperature, and water) on photosynthesis in the laboratory to construct a production model. Using these models, we estimated the net primary production (NPP) over the last 10 years (2009-2018) based on the climatic data (air temperature and precipitation) recorded at the weather station of Higashi-Hiroshima City. The estimated NPP showed negative values in summer, which indicated that respiratory carbon loss exceeded photosynthetic carbon gain. In contrast, NPP was positive in the spring and winter seasons throughout the 10 years. Autumn NPP varied widely, showing both positive and negative values. The annual NPP also showed considerable year-to-year variations. Additionally, we examined the effects of temperature conditions on NPP assuming annual temperature changes of 0 °C (present temperature), + 1 °C, and + 2 °C. The results indicated that NPP decreased with increasing temperature, except in the winter season. The findings of this study suggest that climate warming has a large impact on the NPP of R. japonicum; however, the impact can be both positive and negative depending on the season. The results also suggest that future climate warming is likely to decrease NPP on an annual basis.

The effect of tar spot pathogen on host plant carbon balance and its possible consequences on a tundra ecosystem

In Arctic tundra, plant pathogens have substantial effects on the growth and survival of hosts, and impacts on the carbon balance at the scale of ecological systems. To understand these effects on carbon dynamics across different scales including plant organ, individual, population and ecosystem, we focused on two primary factors: host productivity reduction and carbon consumption by the pathogen. We measured the effect of the pathogen on photosynthetic and respiratory activity in the host. We also measured respiration and the amount of carbon in the pathogen. We constructed a model based on these two factors, and calculated pathogenic effects on the carbon balance at different organismal and ecological scales. We found that carbon was reduced in infected leaves by 118% compared with healthy leaves; the major factor causing this loss was pathogenic carbon consumption. The carbon balance at the population and ecosystem levels decreased by 35% and 20%, respectively, at an infection rate of 30%. This case study provides the first evidence that a host plant can lose more carbon through pathogenic carbon consumption than through a reduction in productivity. Such a pathogenic effect could greatly change ecosystem carbon cycling without decreasing annual productivity.
