High abundances of small copepods early developmental stages and nauplii strengthen the perception of a non-dormant Arctic winter

Dietary plasticity in small Arctic copepods as revealed with prey metabarcoding

Objectives

Small copepods (<2 mm) compose an important constituent of the Arctic marine food web, but their trophic interactions remain largely unexplored, partly due to methodological limitations.

Methods

We here characterize the prey of the abundant cyclopoid Oithona similis, harpacticoid Microsetella norvegica and calanoid Microcalanus spp. from the Arctic Barents Sea and Nansen Basin during four seasons using brute force prey metabarcoding of the 18S rRNA gene.

Key findings

Chaetognaths were unexpectedly the most consistently identified taxa and composed 47% of all prey reads. Some taxa were seasonally important, including diatoms in April-May (43%), dinoflagellates in December (15%) and March (17%), and urochordates in August (20%). Compositional differences among species were also discernible, and the M. norvegica diet was significantly different from both O. similis and Microcalanus spp. The diets varied nevertheless more with season than species despite the inherent trophic traits that distinguish the ambush-predator O. similis, chemosensoric particle-chaser M. norvegica and current-feeding Microcalanus spp.

Conclusions

Our results thus indicate that dietary plasticity is common in small Arctic copepods, regardless of their behaviors or strategies for finding sustenance. We further hypothesize that such plasticity is an important adaptation in systems where prey availability is highly seasonal.

Metagenomic 18S rDNA reads revealed zonation of eukaryotic communities in the Yongle blue hole

The Yongle blue hole (YBH), situated in the South China Sea, represents a compelling subject of study in marine microbiology due to its unique redox-layered microbial ecosystems. However, the diversity and ecology of microbial eukaryotes within the YBH remains underexplored. This study endeavors to bridge this gap through the application of the in situ microbial filtration and fixation (ISMIFF) device to collect 0.22-30 μm microbial samples from 21 water layers of YBH. Subsequent extraction of 18S rRNA metagenomic reads of 21 metagenomes and 10 metatranscriptomes facilitated a comprehensive analysis of community structures. Findings revealed a pronounced superiority in the diversity and richness of eukaryotic microorganisms in the oxic zone compared to its suboxic and anoxic counterparts. Notably, Dinophyceae and Maxillopoda emerged as the predominant taxa based on the analysis of the 18S rRNA reads for the V4 and V9 regions, which showed stratification In their relative abundance and suggested their potential role in the thermo-halocline boundaries and oxic-anoxic interface. Specifically, In these eukaryotic microbial communities, Dinophyceae exhibited significant abundance at 20 m (20.01%) and 105 m (26.13%) water depths, while Maxillopoda was prevalent at 40 m (22.84%), 80 m (23.19%), and 100 m (15.42%) depths. A part of these organisms, identified as larvae and protists, were likely attracted by swarming chemosynthetic bacterial prey prevailing at the thermo-halocline boundaries and oxic-anoxic interface. Furthermore, the phylogenetic relationships of the major 18S operational taxonomic units (OTUs) showed a close adjacency to known species, except for three Dinophyceae OTUs. In conclusion, this study provides critical insights into the vertical distribution and transcriptional activity of <30-μm eukaryotic microbes, shedding light on the taxonomic novelty of eukaryotic microorganisms within the semi-enclosed blue holes.

Marine Plankton during the Polar Night: Environmental Predictors of Spatial Variability

We studied the spatial patterns of the planktonic ecosystems at two Arctic sites strongly affected by Atlantic Inflow (FS, the Fram Strait; and BS, the Barents Sea). A high degree of similarity in the bacterial abundance (mean: 3.1 × 105 cells mL-1 in FS vs. 3.5 × 105 cells mL-1 in BS) was found, while other plankton characteristics were different. Bacterial biomass reached a maximum in BS (3.2-7.9 mg C m-3), while viral abundances tended to be higher in FS (2.0-5.7 × 106 particles mL-1). Larger bacterial cells were found in BS, suggesting the presence of different bacterial populations at both locations. The virus-to-bacteria ratio was significantly higher in FS than in BS (13.5 vs. 4.7). Chlorophyll a concentration was extremely low (<0.25 mg m-3). The highest zooplankton abundance was in the surface layer (919 individuals m-3 in FS vs. 602 ind. m-3 in BS). Zooplankton biomass strongly varied (1-39 mg C m-3), with the maximum in BS. High proportions of boreal taxa in the total zooplankton abundance indicate the Atlantification of pelagic ecosystems in the Arctic. Plankton indicators are correlated with temperature, salinity, and sampling depth. Strong intercorrelations were found between major plankton groups, suggesting tight links in the studied plankton ecosystems.
