Comparative transcriptomics revealed the ecological trap effect of linearly polarized light on Oratosquilla oratoria

Although polarized light can assist many animals in performing special visual tasks, current polarized light pollution (PLP) caused by urban construction has been shown to induce maladaptive behaviors of PL-sensitive animals and change ecological interactions. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our previous work hypothesized that linearly polarized light (LPL) is an ecological trap for Oratosquilla oratoria, a common Stomatopoda species in the China Sea. Here we explored the underlying negative effects of artificially LPL on O. oratoria based on comparative transcriptomics. We identified 3616 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in O. oratoria compound eyes continuous exposed to natural light (NL) and LPL scenarios. In comparison with the NL scenario, a total of 1972 up- and 1644 down- regulated genes were obtained from the O. oratoria compound eyes under LPL scenario, respectively. Furthermore, we performed functional annotation of those DEGs described above and identified 65 DEGs related to phototransduction, reproduction, immunity, and synapse. Based on the functional information, we suspected that continuous LPL exposure could block the light transmission, disrupt the reproductive process, and lead to the progressive failure of the immune response of O. oratoria. In conclusion, this study is the first to systematically describe the negative effects of artificial LPL exposure on O. oratoria at the genetic level, and it can improve the biological conservation theory behind PLP.

The role of learning-walk related multisensory experience in rewiring visual circuits in the desert ant brain

Efficient spatial orientation in the natural environment is crucial for the survival of most animal species. Cataglyphis desert ants possess excellent navigational skills. After far-ranging foraging excursions, the ants return to their inconspicuous nest entrance using celestial and panoramic cues. This review focuses on the question about how naïve ants acquire the necessary spatial information and adjust their visual compass systems. Naïve ants perform structured learning walks during their transition from the dark nest interior to foraging under bright sunlight. During initial learning walks, the ants perform rotational movements with nest-directed views using the earth’s magnetic field as an earthbound compass reference. Experimental manipulations demonstrate that specific sky compass cues trigger structural neuronal plasticity in visual circuits to integration centers in the central complex and mushroom bodies. During learning walks, rotation of the sky-polarization pattern is required for an increase in volume and synaptic complexes in both integration centers. In contrast, passive light exposure triggers light-spectrum (especially UV light) dependent changes in synaptic complexes upstream of the central complex. We discuss a multisensory circuit model in the ant brain for pathways mediating structural neuroplasticity at different levels following passive light exposure and multisensory experience during the performance of learning walks.

Ocellar spatial vision in Myrmecia ants

In addition to compound eyes, insects possess simple eyes known as ocelli. Input from the ocelli modulates optomotor responses, flight-time initiation, and phototactic responses - behaviours that are mediated predominantly by the compound eyes. In this study, using pattern electroretinography (pERG), we investigated the contribution of the compound eyes to ocellar spatial vision in the diurnal Australian bull ant Myrmecia tarsata by measuring the contrast sensitivity and spatial resolving power of the ocellar second-order neurons under various occlusion conditions. Furthermore, in four species of Myrmecia ants active at different times of the day, and in European honeybee Apis mellifera, we characterized the ocellar visual properties when both visual systems were available. Among the ants, we found that the time of activity had no significant effect on ocellar spatial vision. Comparing day-active ants and the honeybee, we did not find any significant effect of locomotion on ocellar spatial vision. In M. tarsata, when the compound eyes were occluded, the amplitude of the pERG signal from the ocelli was reduced 3 times compared with conditions when the compound eyes were available. The signal from the compound eyes maintained the maximum contrast sensitivity of the ocelli as 13 (7.7%), and the spatial resolving power as 0.29 cycles deg-1. We conclude that ocellar spatial vison improves significantly with input from the compound eyes, with a noticeably larger improvement in contrast sensitivity than in spatial resolving power.

Neutral point detection using the AOP of polarized skylight patterns

The neutral points are one of the most significant characteristics of the polarized skylight pattern in the whole sky. At present, detection of the neutral points mostly utilizes ellipse fitting of the degree of polarization. However, because the degree of polarization distribution characteristics of a polarized skylight pattern is easily affected by the environment, the robustness of the detection is unstable. Aiming at the problem, we analyzed the angle of polarization distribution characteristics of polarized skylight patterns in the region around the neutral point by measurement experiments. Based on this, we proposed an automatic detection method of neutral points using the angle of polarization of the polarized skylight pattern. The experimental results of different times in a continuous period of time show that compared with ellipse fitting of the degree of polarization, the detection accuracy of the proposed method is almost the same, but the robustness is better. It provides a novel method for the position detecting of the neutral point, which is in favor of the measurement applications of polarization technology.
