Bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most cited articles on craniosynostosis

3D printing in pediatric neurosurgery: experimental study of a novel approach using biodegradable materials

PURPOSE

3D printing technologies have become an integral part of modern life, and the most routinely used materials in reconstructive surgery in children are biodegradable materials. The combination of these two technologies opens up new possibilities for the application of innovative methods in neurosurgery and a patient-centered approach in medical care. The aim of the study was to determine whether a physician without specialized programming and printing skills could independently create materials in a clinical setting for the treatment of patients.

METHODS

We conducted a preclinical study on 15 male Balb-C mice. Cylindrical materials made of polylactic acid (PLA) plastic were 3D printed. Sterilization of the obtained material was performed using a cold plasma sterilizer with hydrogen peroxide vapor and its plasma. The sterile material was implanted subcutaneously into the mice for 30 days, followed by histological examination. Using open-source software for modeling and printing, plates and screws made of PLA plastic were manufactured. The produced components were tested in the biomedical laboratory of the institute.

RESULTS

The histological material showed that no inflammatory changes were observed at the implantation site during the entire observation period. The cellular composition is mainly represented by macrophages and fibroblasts. There was a gradual resolution of the material and its replacement by native tissues. Research conducted to assess the effectiveness of material sterilization in a cold plasma sterilizer demonstrated its high bactericidal efficiency.

CONCLUSION

The method we developed for obtaining biodegradable plates and fixation elements on a 3D printer is easy to use and has demonstrated safety in a preclinical study on an animal model.

The Top 100 Most-Cited Publications in Clinical Craniofacial Research

INTRODUCTION

Craniosynostosis is a birth defect defined as premature closure of sutures leading to possible neurological deficits and cosmetic deformities. Most of the current literature to date focuses on craniosynostosis etiology by analyzing genetics. This paper is a bibliometric analysis of the most influential works related to the clinical management of craniosynostosis to help guide clinicians in their decision-making.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Clarivate Web of Science database was used to identify the top 100 most-cited articles addressing the clinical management of craniosynostosis. A bibliometric review was performed to analyze publication metrics and track research trends.

RESULTS

The 100 most-cited publications pertaining to craniosynostosis management were cited a cumulative 12,779 times. The highest cited article was Shillito and colleagues' "Craniosynostosis: A Review Of 519 Surgical Patients" with 352 citations. The oldest clinical craniosynostosis article dates back to 1948, and the most recent was published in 2016. The year with the most clinical-focused publications was 2011. The most prolific author was Renier, D. The United States produced 56 of the 100 articles. Most articles (n=52) were level 3 evidence.

DISCUSSION

This bibliometric evaluation of craniosynostosis provides insight into the most impactful literature on this topic. The highest cited articles retrospectively analyze large sample sizes, outline proper evaluation, discuss intervention timelines, and highlight specific treatment plans for this birth defect. By filtering through existing literature, this analysis can guide clinicians on the management of craniosynostosis to maximize patient outcomes.

A bibliometric and subject analysis of 3300 most‐cited articles in dentistry

Objectives

This study aims to analyze the publications that have studied top‐cited articles in dentistry.

Material and Methods

The study is applied research in terms of the purpose and scientometrics descriptive in terms of type, which has been done using the Retrospective Bibliometric Analysis. To retrieve the 100 most‐cited studies in Scopus, an advance search was used. The search results indicate that 33 articles focused on analyzing the 100 most‐cited publications on oral and dental subjects. The bibliographic information, including author, journal, country, institution, citation count, and citation density was analyzed. Then the full text of the articles was reviewed to identify the most productive journal, country, and institute in publishing the 100 most‐cited articles and also article type, study design, level of evidence, and the most important subjects among the 100 most‐cited papers.

Results

In these 33 articles, the topics of 3300 most‐cited articles were introduced, as well as the introduction of the core journals, countries, and institutes in publishing top‐cited articles. The most common research topics in the field of dentistry cover a range of dental public health and pediatric dentistry to adhesive restorative dentistry and implantology. Dental materials, oral medicine, and pathology seem like inseparable topics of common research in dentistry. J Dent Res, which was mentioned in nine articles, was introduced as the journal with the publication of articles of highest citation. J Clin Periodontol and Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology were in the second place, being mentioned in five articles. The USA, and two institutions the University of Texas, and the University of Michigan are orderly core country and institute for the production of most‐cited articles.

Conclusion

Researchers and specialists can get familiar with the most productive author, journals, countries, and different institutes for publishing high‐quality articles in the field of oral and dental subjects by the means of the results of this article. Furthermore, the results of this study ranked the most cited article topics, which are of interest for publication, demonstrating the future map road oral and dental research.

A bibliometric analysis on the most-cited publications on carotid endarterectomy throughout history

Objective

Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is the gold standard surgical procedure for managing carotid stenosis due to atherosclerosis and reducing the risk of ischemic stroke. This bibliometric analysis summarizes the most-cited articles on CEA and highlights the contributing articles to today’s evidence-based practice.

Methods

A title-specific search using the Scopus database was used to perform the search. Pertinent article-based, journal-based, and author-based parameters were obtained for review.

Results

A total of 6,824 articles were published between 1970 and 2020. The top 100 most-cited articles accumulated a total of 54,153 citations with an average citation count (CC) of 541, with only a 4.53% self-citation rate for all authors. The publication trends peaked between 1997 and 2010, in which two-third of the highly cited works were published. The most prolific categories with top citations are the clinical, indications, and management, in a descending order. There were 41 published Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) in the most-cited list.

Conclusions

Citation analysis on carotid endarterectomy has witnessed a marked shift in the publication trends from studying the outcome and complications to comparing carotid stenting with endarterectomy. This analysis is a good introductory article to physicians interested in this topic, as it summarizes the highly impactful articles and enlists the most-cited RCT on CEA.

A bibliometric overview of craniosynostosis research development

This article reviews the development of research in the field of craniosynostosis from a bibliometric standpoint. Craniosynostosis is a malformation occurring during the early development of the skull, when one or more of the sutures close too early, causing problems with normal brain and skull growth. Research in this field has developed from early clinical case descriptions, to genetic discoveries responsible for the occurring malformations and onwards to developing sophisticated surgical treatment. In this article we describe these developments, zoom in on publication trends and characteristics and visualize developing networks and topic shifts in this research field.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Top 100 Most-Cited Articles on Intracranial Flow Diversion

BACKGROUND

Flow diverters are novel, contemporary tools in treating intracranial aneurysms. There is rapid publication turnover, with newer devices introduced and expanding indications. The bibliometric analysis measures the impact of particular articles and summarizes the chronologic trends overall.

METHODS

In July 2020, we performed a thorough search of the Scopus database using the terms "flow diversion," "flow diverter," and "flow diverting stent." The top 100 most impactful articles were arranged based on citation count in descending order. The collected articles were then analyzed with an assessment of relevant factors.

RESULTS

Almost 1671 articles were published between 2007 and 2020. The gathered top 100 most-cited articles amassed 10,035 citations, with an average citation count of 100.35. An 8.8% self-citation rate was identified for all authors. The publication trends peaked in 2012, in which 24% of articles were published. Most prolific categories with top citations are on pipeline embolization, followed by the SILK flow diverter category. The United States published the highest number of articles. The University of Buffalo and Mayo Clinic published most of the articles among other institutions. American Journal of Neuroradiology was the most productive journal by producing 28 articles.

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric analysis shows significant chronologic trends, with a shift from usefulness and outcome to short-term and long-term complications. Areas to improve in flow diverter research can be addressed after this analysis of the most impactful articles on this topic.
