Miscibility of sodium chloride and sodium dodecyl sulfate in the adsorbed film and aggregate

Predicting bilgewater emulsion stability by oil separation using image processing and machine learning

Bilgewater is a shipboard multi-component oily wastewater, combining numerous wastewater sources. A better understanding of bilgewater emulsions is required for proper wastewater management to meet discharge regulations. In this study, we developed 360 emulsion samples based on commonly used Navy cleaner data and previous bilgewater composition studies. Oil value (OV) was obtained from image analysis of oil/creaming layer and validated by oil separation (OS) which was experimentally determined using a gravimetric method. OV (%) showed good agreement with OS (%), indicating that a simple image-based parameter can be used for emulsion stability prediction model development. An ANOVA analysis was conducted of the five variables (Cleaner, Salinity, Suspended Solids [SS], pH, and Temperature) that significantly impacted estimates of OV, finding that the Cleaner, Salinity, and SS variables were statistically significant (p < 0.05), while pH and Temperature were not. In general, most cleaners showed improved oil separation with salt additions. Novel machine learning (ML)-based predictive models of both classification and regression for bilgewater emulsion stability were then developed using OV. For classification, the random forest (RF) classifiers achieved the most accurate prediction with F1-score of 0.8224, while in regression-based models the decision tree (DT) regressor showed the highest prediction of emulsion stability with the average mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.1611. Turbidity also showed a good emulsion prediction with RF regressor (MAE of 0.0559) and RF classifier (F1-score of 0.9338). One predictor variable removal test showed that Salinity, SS, and Temperature are the most impactful variables in the developed models. This is the first study to use image processing and machine learning for the prediction of oil separation for the application of bilgewater assessment within the marine sector.

Cationic surfactant-directed structural control of NaCl crystals from evaporating sessile droplets

We report morphological regulation of NaCl (sodium chloride) crystals through the evaporative crystallisation process of microdroplets containing a cationic surfactant CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide). Various fascinating evaporative salt morphologies are observed using different combinations of salt (C_NaCl) and surfactant (C_CTAB) concentrations. Each observed morphology is carefully explained by the interplaying physical phenomena, such as crystallisation, micellisation, evaporative dewetting, and surface adsorption of anionic couneterions. Salt morphologies are investigated for low (C_NaCl = 0.1 (M)), intermediate (C_NaCl = 0.5 (M)) and high (C_NaCl = 2 (M)) concentrations, whereas surfactant concentrations are varied four orders of magnitudes (from 0.0001 (M) to 0.1 (M)). Interestingly, we observe a threshold in C_CTAB at 0.001 (M), beyond which the peripheral rings of dried deposits are found to be composed of CTAB for C_NaCl = 0.1 (M), while the same is seen to be made up of NaCl for C_NaCl = 2 (M). We have explained the morphological evolution by the process of competitive surface adsorption phenomenon between Cl^- and Br^- counter ions. Such a detailed study of saline droplet crystallisation in the presence of a cationic surfactant underpins the fundamental understanding of the crystallisation process. In addition, it may further impact application sectors where crystallisation of saline solution plays an important role, especially in the presence of additives.

The Effect of Salt on Stability of Aqueous Foams

The properties of foams are often affected by environmental variables such as salt contamination. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of salt on the drainage behavior of aqueous foams. To accomplish this objective, drainage experiments were conducted on aqueous foams. Test variables were foam quality (40–65%), and salt content (0% to 18%), and type. To investigate drainage, the foam was generated in a flow loop and trapped in a vertical test section. Then, the pressure profile in the foam column was measured using ten pressure sensors. Foam drainage is determined as a function of time using measured pressure profiles. The results show that the drainage of NaCl-containing foams decreased with foam quality, whereas the CaCl2-containing foams did not exhibit a clear trend with foam quality. The effect of salt content on foam rheology was minimal.

Salt Effects on Formation and Stability of Colloidal Gas Aphrons Produced by Anionic and Zwitterionic Surfactants in Xanthan Gum Solution

This work is devoted to the influence of NaCl salt concentration on the formation and stability of colloidal gas aphrons (CGA) produced by the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and zwitterionic surfactant coco amido propyl betaine (CAPB) in the presence of xanthan gum (XG) as a stabilizer. Dynamic surface tension measurements as well as volume and half-life time of the produced foams are considered for stability analysis. A sharp decrease of the half-life time and volume of the CGAs at NaCl concentrations larger than 20,000 ppm was observed, which was attributed to the precipitation of SDS in the solution. The mentioned SDS precipitation altered the dynamic surface tension behavior, dilational surface elasticity, and turbidity of the solution. The main reason for the precipitation of SDS is the increased Krafft point caused by the addition of salt. However, for the zwitterionic surfactant CAPB, the effects of added NaCl on the interfacial properties required for CGAs production was negligible due to the simultaneous effects on the cationic and anionic head groups in the CAPB leading to negligible changes in the net repulsion forces. Yet, an overall reduction in the half-life time of CGAs with increasing salt concentration, even when we have no precipitation, was observed for both surfactants, which could be explained by the reduction in the ability of XG to increase the viscosity with increasing salt concentration.

Morphology modulation in evaporative drying mediated crystallization of sodium chloride solution droplet with surfactant

We report the evaporative drying of an aqueous droplet containing a dilute solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) on a hydrophobic substrate made of cross-linked poly-dimethyl siloxane (PDMS). The salt concentration Cn was varied between 0.08 molar (M) and 2.0 M. The contact line of the evaporating droplets shows significant initial retraction for all Cn, before they get pinned. While the final morphology comprises a few small NaCl crystals deposited around the pinned contact line, in droplets with a low Cn (<0.5 M), it transforms to a single large salt crystal when Cn > 0.7 M with no peripheral deposition. We further show that the deposition morphology drastically changes when an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), is added into the salt-solutions. Even in the surfactant-laden droplets, the final deposition morphology changes significantly as a function of Cn. It transforms from a thick SDS ring surrounding a fractal-like deposit of NaCl crystallites at lower Cn to a peripheral deposit of NaCl crystals at higher Cn due to competition between micelle formation and crystallization. However, the crystallographic orientation of the deposited NaCl crystals remains unaltered irrespective of the presence of surfactant.

Influence of Surfactants on Sodium Chloride Crystallization in Confinement

We study the influence of different surfactants on NaCl crystallization during evaporation of aqueous salt solutions. We found that at concentrations of sodium chloride close to saturation, only the cationic surfactant CTAB and the nonionic surfactant Tween 80 remain stable. For the nonionic surfactant, the high concentration of salt does not significantly change either the critical micellar concentration (CMC) or the surface tension at the CMC; for the cationic surfactant, the CMC is reduced by roughly 2 orders of magnitude upon adding the salt. The presence of both types of surfactants in the salt solution delays the crystallization of sodium chloride with evaporation. This, in turn, leads to high supersaturation which induces the rapid precipitation of a hopper crystal in the bulk. The crystallization inhibitor role of these surfactants is shown to be mainly due to the passivation of nucleation sites at both liquid/air and solid/liquid interfaces rather than a change in the evaporation rate which is found not to be affected by the presence of the surfactants. The adsorption of surfactants at the liquid/air interface prevents the crystallization at this location which is generally the place where the precipitation of sodium chloride is observed. Moreover, sum frequency generation spectroscopy measurements show that the surfactants are also present at the solid/liquid interface. The incorporation of the surfactants into the salt crystals is investigated using a novel, but simple, method based on surface tension measurements. Our results show that the nonionic surfactant Tween 80 is incorporated in the NaCl crystals but the cationic surfactant CTAB is not. Taken together, these results therefore allow us to establish the effect of the presence of surfactants on sodium chloride crystallization.

Self-assembly characteristics of a structural analogue of Tjernberg peptide

This article aims to understand the pathogenesis behind the formation of amyloid plaques using a modified version of the KLVFF peptide. It was found that the cytotoxicity of the nanostructures formed by the RIVFF peptide may be attributed to the aminoacids with long side chains along with hydrophobic aminoacids resembling the amyloid beta peptide.

Micelle-assisted synthesis of Al2O3·CaO nanocatalyst: optical properties and their applications in photodegradation of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol

Calcium oxide (CaO) nanoparticles are known to exhibit unique property due to their high adsorption capacity and good catalytic activity. In this work the CaO nanocatalysts were prepared by hydrothermal method using anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), as a templating agent. The as-synthesized nanocatalysts were further used as substrate for the synthesis of alumina doped calcium oxide (Al2O3·CaO) nanocatalysts via deposition-precipitation method at the isoelectric point of CaO. The Al2O3·CaO nanocatalysts were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, TEM, and FESEM techniques. The catalytic efficiencies of these nanocatalysts were studied for the photodegradation of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (2,4,6-TNP), which is an industrial pollutant, spectrophotometrically. The effect of surfactant and temperature on size of nanocatalysts was also studied. The smallest particle size and highest percentage of degradation were observed at critical micelle concentration of the surfactant. The direct optical band gap of the Al2O3·CaO nanocatalyst was found as 3.3 eV.

Thermodynamic studies on thin liquid films IV. Foam film stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate

Thermodynamic treatment of thin liquid films in Part III of this series was applied to foam films stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate. Miscibility of sodium chloride and sodium dodecyl sulfate in the adsorbed films at the film surfaces and transition between the black films were studied by measuring film thickness and contact angle. A discontinuous change in the thickness and a break on the contact angle vs. concentration curve appeared at the transition. Judging from the phase diagram of adsorption, sodium chloride and sodium dodecyl sulfate are a little miscible in the adsorbed films. The miscibility was ascribed to specific interaction between sodium ion and dodecyl sulfate ion in the adsorbed films. The miscibility in an adsorbed film was compared between the film surface and meniscus and between the common black and Newton black films.
