Role of transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters for the remediation of toxic dyes in aqueous systems

A difficult issue in chemistry and materials science is to create metal compounds with well-defined components. Metal nanoclusters, particularly those of coinage groups (Cu, Ag, and Au), have received considerable research interest in recent years owing to the availability of atomic-level precision via joint experimental and theoretical methods, thus revealing the mechanisms in diverse nano-catalysts and functional materials. The textile sector significantly contributes to wastewater containing pollutants such as dyes and chemical substances. Textile and fabric manufacturing account for about 7 × 105 tons of wastewater annually. Approximately one thousand tons of dyes used in textile processing and finishing has been recorded as being discharged into natural streams and water bodies. Owing to the widespread environmental concerns, research has been conducted to develop absorbents that are capable of removing contaminants and heavy metals from water bodies using low-cost technology. Considering this idea, we reviewed coinage metal nanoclusters for azo and cationic dye degradation. Fluorometric and colorimetric techniques are used for dye degradation using coinage metal nanoclusters. Few reports are available on dye degradation using silver nanoclusters; and some of them are discussed in detailed herein to demonstrate the synergistic effect of gold and silver in dye degradation. Mostly, the Rhodamine B dye is degraded using coinage metals. Silver nanoclusters take less time for degradation than gold and copper nanoclusters. Mostly, H2O2 is used for degradation in gold nanoclusters. Still, all coinage metal nanoclusters have been used for the degradation due to suitable HOMO-LUMO gap, and the adsorption of a dye onto the surface of the catalyst results in the exchange of electrons and holes, which leads to the oxidation and reduction of the adsorbed dye molecule. Compared to other coinage metal nanoclusters, Ag/g-C3N4 nanoclusters displayed an excellent degradation rate constant with the dye Rhodamine B (0.0332 min-1). The behavior of doping transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters is also reviewed herein. In addition, we discuss the mechanistic grounds for degradation, the fate of metal nanoclusters, anti-bacterial activity of nanoclusters, toxicity of dyes, and sensing of dyes.

Facile synthesis of water-soluble silver nanoclusters for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes by multivariate optimization approach

In this study, silver nanoclusters protected by the natural tripeptide ligand (GSH@Ag NCs) were constructed for photocatalytic dye degradation. The ultrasmall GSH@Ag NCs were found to exhibit a remarkably high degradation capability. Aqueous solutions of the hazardous organic dye Erythrosine B (Ery. B) and Rhodamine B (Rh. B) were subjected to degradation in the presence of Ag NCs under solar light and white-light LED irradiation. The degradation efficiency of GSH@Ag NCs was evaluated using UV-vis spectroscopy, where Erythrosine B showed considerably high degradation of 94.6% compared to Rhodamine B, which was degraded by 85.1%, corresponding to a 20 mg L^-1 degradation capacity in 30 min respectively under solar exposure. Moreover, the degradation efficacy for the above-mentioned dyes demonstrated a dwindling trend under white-light LED irradiation, attaining 78.57 and 67.923% degradation under the same experimental conditions. The astoundingly high degradation efficiency of GSH@Ag NCs under solar-light irradiation was due to the high I of 1370 W for solar light versus 0.07 W for LED light, along with the formation of hydroxyl radicals HO˙ on the catalyst surface initiating degradation due to oxidation.

Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Application as Antibacterial and Antifungal Agents

The importance and need for eco-oriented technologies has increased worldwide, which leads to an enhanced development of methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles using biological agents. This review de-scribes the current approaches to the preparation of biogenic silver nanoparticles, using plant extracts and filtrates of fungi and microorganisms. The peculiarities of the synthesis of particles depending on the source of biocomponents are considered as well as physico-morphological, antibacterial and antifungal properties of the resulting nanoparticles which are compared with such properties of silver nanoparticles obtained by chemical synthesis. Special attention is paid to the process of self-assembly of biogenic silver nanoparticles.

A Review on Silver Nanoparticles: Classification, Various Methods of Synthesis, and Their Potential Roles in Biomedical Applications and Water Treatment

Recent developments in nanoscience have appreciably modified how diseases are prevented, diagnosed, and treated. Metal nanoparticles, specifically silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), are widely used in bioscience. From time to time, various synthetic methods for the synthesis of AgNPs are reported, i.e., physical, chemical, and photochemical ones. However, among these, most are expensive and not eco-friendly. The physicochemical parameters such as temperature, use of a dispersing agent, surfactant, and others greatly influence the quality and quantity of the synthesized NPs and ultimately affect the material’s properties. Scientists worldwide are trying to synthesize NPs and are devising methods that are easy to apply, eco-friendly, and economical. Among such strategies is the biogenic method, where plants are used as the source of reducing and capping agents. In this review, we intend to debate different strategies of AgNP synthesis. Although, different preparation strategies are in use to synthesize AgNPs such as electron irradiation, optical device ablation, chemical reduction, organic procedures, and photochemical methods. However, biogenic processes are preferably used, as they are environment-friendly and economical. The review covers a comprehensive discussion on the biological activities of AgNPs, such as antimicrobial, anticancer anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic potentials of AgNPs. The use of AgNPs in water treatment and disinfection has also been discussed in detail.
