Abstract
Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional case control study, the serum level of LH, FSH, and prolactin of 40 women with lichen planus who have been referred to Shiraz Dental Faculty, Oral and Maxillofacial Disease Department during 2018-2019 has been evaluated in comparison to 40 healthy controls. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 18. Two-way ANOVA and Mann–Whitney test were used for data analysis. Results The mean serum level of FSH and LH was significantly higher in OLP patients while this difference was not reported for prolactin. Only FSH mean serum level was significantly higher in nonmenopausal OLP patients. The distribution of prolactin and FSH hormones' serum level was in normal range. Conclusions The high serum level of FSH and LH can affect OLP pathogenesis by estrogen and progesterone modulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic urticaria (CU) is a disturbing disease with a negative impact on quality of life. Despite of several clinical studies on CU patients, its pathogenesis is poorly understood. Prolactin (PRL) is peptide hormone has immunomodulatory effects in some immune inflammatory skin diseases. AIM To elucidate any possible relationship between the immunomodulatory effects of PRL and CU. Besides, the study aims to investigate the crucial role of antiprolactin drugs in the management of CU patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS The serum PRL level of 40 female patients with CU was measured using the electrochemiluminescence immunoassay. The activity of CU was assessed by European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology; Global Allergy and Asthma European Network; European Dermatology Forum (EAACI/GA2LEN/EDF) activity score. Patients with high PRL level had been given anti prolactin therapy to normalize their PRL levels. Then, the disease activity was reassessed in these patients. RESULTS The serum PRL level was high in 8 of 40 (20%) patients (43.18 ± 12.81). Half of patients with high PRL level had remission after treatment of hyperprolactinemia (p = .001). CONCLUSIONS Serum PRL levels could not be considered as a marker of the disease activity in CU patients.

Abstract
The etiology of vitiligo is still unclear. The aim is to investigate a neural and hormonal etio-pathology of vitiligo. Sixty acrofacial vitiligo patients were divided into two subgroups as active vitiligo patients group (AVPs; n = 35) and stable vitiligo patients group (SVP; n = 25). Forty healthy subjects without any systemic or dermatological disease were used as controls. Blood samples were collected, and the samples were used for measurement of free triiodothyronine (fT3), free thyroxine (fT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, melatonin, and prolactin levels by ELISA, while norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (Epi), dopamine (DA), homo-vanillic acid (HVA), serotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) by high-pressure liquid chromatography. The current results showed a significant increase in plasma levels of Epi, NE, DA, HVA, serotonin, 5-HIAA, melatonin, and in serum level of TSH and prolactin either in SVP or AVP groups than the control group and in AVP than SVP group. The serum levels of fT3 and fT4 were significantly decreased either in SVP or AVP groups than the control group. A significant increase in estradiol levels was observed in females within AVP than females in either SVP or control groups. There was a significant increase in serum level of cortisol in AVP than either SVP or control group. There was a significant decrease in serum level of ACTH in either AVP or SVP than control and in AVP than SVP group. In conclusion, there are some neural and endocrine markers that play a pivotal role in pathogenesis and/or consequences of vitiligo. The abnormally disturbed levels of theses markers lead to melanocyte destruction and/or depigmentation.

Abstract
Abstract
Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis with major impact on patients’ life quality. The etiopathogenesis is multifactorial, depending on complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. We present the case of two female patients, identical twins of 33 years old, suffering from psoriasis vulgaris since childhood. Patient A developed specific lesions of psoriasis at the age of 7 and patient B started to develop psoriasis lesions on the scalp two years later. At the age of 31, patient A was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Laboratory test results were within the normal ranges for both patients. Hormonal and immunological determinations revealed the presence of a high level of antithyroidperoxidase antibody in patient A and increased level of prolactin in patient B. Ultrasonographic assessment of the thyroid detected the presence of bilateral micronodules in the first subject. Knowing that early onset psoriasis is associated with the presence of Human Leukocyte Antigen Cw6(HLA-Cw6), we aimed to confirm this hypothesis for our subjects. Although HLA-Cw6 is the most frequent mutation in psoriasis patients and it is present in about two-thirds of the tested subjects,the genetic results for both patients were negative, strengthening the fact that other factors, the environmental one and the hormonal disorders had an important role in their psoriasis pathogenesis. Under these conditions, we emphasize the importance of including a hormonal evaluation approach of psoriasis patients in order to diagnose and treat pathologies that may be related with disease exacerbations

Abstract
Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic, common skin disease, which affects the patient’s quality of life to the highest degree. Several exogenous factors and endogenous hormonal changes may act as triggers for psoriasis. The skin possesses a true endocrine system, which is very important in multiple systemic diseases. A number of conditions are associated with psoriasis, and its severity can also be influenced by hormones. Even though the sex hormones and prolactin have a major role in psoriasis pathogenicity, there are a lot of other hormones which can influence the psoriasis clinical manifestations: glucocorticoids, epinephrine, thyroid hormones, and insulin.

Abstract
Growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) are both endocrines that are synthesized and released from the pituitary gland into systemic circulation. Both are therefore hormones and both have numerous physiological roles mediated through a myriad of target sites and both have pathophysiological consequences when present in excess or deficiency. GH or PRL gene expression is not, however, confined to the anterior pituitary gland and it occurs widely in many of their central and peripheral sites of action. This may reflect "leaky gene" phenomena and the fact that all cells have the potential to express every gene that is present in their genome. However, the presence of GH or PRL receptors in these extrapituitary sites of GH and PRL production suggests that they are autocrine or paracrine sites of GH and PRL action. These local actions often occur prior to the ontogeny of pituitary somatotrophs and lactotrophs and they may complement or differ from the roles of their pituitary counterparts. Many of these local actions are also of physiological significance, since they are impaired by a blockade of local GH or PRL production or by an antagonism of local GH or PRL action. These local actions may also be of pathophysiological significance, since autocrine or paracrine actions of GH and PRL are thought to be causally involved in a number of disease states, particularly in cancer. Autocrine GH for instance, is thought to be more oncogenic than pituitary GH and selective targeting of the autocrine moiety may provide a therapeutic approach to prevent tumor progression. In summary, GH and PRL are not just endocrine hormones, as they have autocrine and/or paracrine roles in health and disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prolactin (PRL) signaling has emerged as a relevant target in breast and prostate cancers. This has encouraged various laboratories to develop compounds targeting the PRL receptor (PRLR). As the latter is widely distributed, it is timely to address whether other conditions could also benefit from such inhibitors. AREAS COVERED The authors briefly overview the two classes of PRLR blockers, which involve: i) PRL-core based analogs that have been validated as competitive antagonists in various preclinical models, and ii) anti-PRLR neutralizing antibodies that are currently in clinical Phase I for advanced breast and prostate cancers. The main purpose of this review is to discuss the multiple organs/diseases that may be considered as potential targets/indications for such inhibitors. This is done in light of reports suggesting that PRLR expression/signaling is increased in disease, and/or that systemic or locally elevated PRL levels correlate with (or promote) organ pathogenesis. EXPERT OPINION The two immediate challenges in the field are i) to provide the scientific community with potent anti-prolactin receptor antibodies to map prolactin receptor expression in target organs, and ii) to take advantage of the availability of functionally validated PRLR blockers to establish the relevance of these potential indications in humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between psoriasis and cardiovascular diseases is well documented, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Overexpression of osteopontin (OPN) has been reported in the plasma of patients with psoriasis, with increased cardiovascular risk factors in these patients. Selenium compounds are effective in downregulating OPN expression. OBJECTIVE We investigated the levels of OPN, selenium and prolactin (PRL) in psoriasis, and their association with metabolic status in patients to identify a possible link between these markers and observed comorbidities. METHODS Plasma samples from 40 patients with psoriasis and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were collected for ELISA. The clinical significance of plasma OPN, selenium and PRL levels in patients compared with controls was analysed in relation to metabolic disorders. RESULTS There was no significant difference in median serum selenium levels between the two groups. Serum levels of PRL were not significantly different from those of HCs, but levels of OPN were significantly higher in patients with psoriasis than in HCs. CONCLUSIONS High plasma OPN is a predictor for occurrence of psoriasis. Our study showed that serum selenium and PRL were not decreased in patients with psoriasis, but there was a negative statistically significant correlation between OPN and selenium in all participants.

Abstract
Background. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 1–3% of Caucasians. Prolactin has proliferative effects on human keratinocytes, a dominant feature of psoriasis, and it is thought that this hormone may play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. This study was conducted to confirm or refute these findings in order to better understand the disease pathogenesis. Methods. The subjects were 90 individuals aged between 15 and 47 years. They were divided into three groups of 30 individuals each: psoriatic patients, atopic dermatitis patients, and control group. A questionnaire was filled regarding their demographic and medical history. All of the study subjects underwent venous blood sampling (5 mL), and serum TSH and prolactin levels were checked. Subjects with abnormal TSH were omitted. Results. None of the patients in the study had raised prolactin, and there was no significant difference in the serum prolactin level between patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis and the control group. There was no relationship between the severity of psoriasis and serum levels of prolactin. Conclusion. Prolactin does not seem to play a role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis as its serum levels are comparable with atopic dermatitis patients and that of the normal population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolactin (PRL) is a pituitary-derived neuropeptide hormone that has been suggested to promote the development of psoriasis, a Th17/Th1-mediated inflammatory dermatosis. PRL increases the expression of Th1 cytokines; however, its effects on Th17 responses are unknown. OBJECTIVE This study aims to determine the in vivo effects of PRL on the expression of Th17 cytokines/chemokines in imiquimod-induced psoriasiform skin inflammation in mice. METHODS BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with PRL or phosphate-buffered saline, and imiquimod cream or Vaseline was applied to the shaved back skin for six consecutive days. RESULTS Intraperitoneal PRL increased the mRNA levels of IL-17A, IL-17F, IL-22, IL-23p19, IL-12p40, CCL20 and STAT3 in imiquimod-treated skin. Mice treated with imiquimod plus PRL, but not those treated with imiquimod plus phosphate-buffered saline, showed significantly increased mRNA levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12p35 and CXCL2 compared with controls. Intraperitoneal PRL increased the numbers of CD3(+) and GR-1(+) cells in the dermis of imiquimod-treated skin. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that intraperitoneal PRL enhances the expression of Th17 and Th1 cytokines/chemokines, and augments inflammation in imiquimod-induced psoriasiform skin. Prolactin may thus exacerbate psoriasis through the enhancement of Th17/Th1 responses.

Abstract
Background. Prolactin (PRL) level is proposed to be associated with the severity of psoriasis although the previous studies reported different results. Objective. To find the association between PRL levels and severity of psoriasis before and after treatment. In addition, we aimed to find a difference in prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroid hormones (T3 and T4), and cortisol levels between patients with psoriasis and normal controls. Methods. First, the levels of hormones were measured in 30 patients with psoriasis and 30 matched controls. The severity was assessed by psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). Then, patients were treated, and PASI was assessed every week until achieving PASI-75 response. At this time, the hormones were measured again and compared to the baseline. Results. No statistical significant difference was observed in the mean PRL, T3, T4, TSH, and cortisol levels between cases and controls. Comparing to the baseline, a significant decrease in PRL levels and a significant increase in T3 and serum cortisol levels were observed after treatment (P < 0.05), while the changes in other hormones were not significant. Conclusion. After treatment, PRL significantly decreased, and T3 and cortisol levels significantly increased. No correlation between hormone levels and improvement of PASI score existed.

Abstract
Human scalp skin and hair follicles (HFs) are extra-pituitary sources of prolactin (PRL). However, the intracutaneous regulation of PRL remains poorly understood. Therefore we investigated whether well-recognized regulators of pituitary PRL expression, which also impact on human skin physiology and pathology, regulate expression of PRL and its receptor (PRLR) in situ. This was studied in serum-free organ cultures of microdissected human scalp HFs and skin, i.e. excluding pituitary, neural and vascular inputs. Prolactin expression was confirmed at the gene and protein level in human truncal skin, where its expression significantly increased (p = 0.049) during organ culture. There was, however, no evidence of PRL secretion into the culture medium as measured by ELISA. PRL immunoreactivity (IR) in female human epidermis was decreased by substance P (p = 0.009), while neither the classical pituitary PRL inhibitor, dopamine, nor corticotropin-releasing hormone significantly modulated PRL IR in HFs or skin respectively. Interferon (IFN) γ increased PRL IR in the epithelium of human HFs (p = 0.044) while tumour necrosis factor (TNF) α decreased both PRL and PRLR IR. This study identifies substance P, TNFα and IFNγ as novel modulators of PRL and PRLR expression in human skin, and suggests that intracutaneous PRL expression is not under dopaminergic control. Given the importance of PRL in human hair growth regulation and its possible role in the pathogenesis of several common skin diseases, targeting intracutaneous PRL production via these newly identified regulatory pathways may point towards novel therapeutic options for inflammatory dermatoses.
