Oral Soft Tissue Metastasis from Breast Cancer as the Only Primary Source: Systematic Review

Background  Breast cancer is one of the most lethal neoplasms causing death. Oral cavity is the rare site of distant metastasis from breast cancer. Very little research has been conducted to date to analyze breast cancer as the sole primary source of metastasis to the oral soft tissues. The goal of this study was to examine the published cases of oral soft tissue metastasis from breast cancer as the only primary source to date. Methods  An electronic search of the published literature was performed without publication year limitation in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Embase, and Research Gate databases, using mesh keywords like ("Breast cancer", OR "Breast carcinoma") AND ("Metastasis" OR "Metastases"), And ("Oral soft tissues" OR "Tongue" OR "Palate" OR "Tonsil" OR "Buccal mucosa" OR "Floor of mouth" OR "Vestibule" OR "Salivary glands"). We also searched all related journals manually. The reference list of all articles was also checked. Results  Our research revealed 88 relevant papers (September 1967-September 2023) with 96 patients in total. The most predominant oral soft tissues involved were salivary glands followed by the gingiva, tonsils, tongue, and buccal mucosa. A total of 23% of patients died with an average survival time of 1 to 15 months. Conclusions  Oral soft tissue metastasis from breast cancer is a rare event and has a bad prognosis. More cases need to be published to raise awareness of these lesions.

Breast Cancer Metastasis on the Neck Mimicking a Glomus Tumor

Cervical metastases from breast carcinoma are extremely rare after several years of disease-free survival. In this article, a metastatic tumor of the neck originating from a breast carcinoma, which has been treated 14 years ago, is discussed. A case is presented of a 48-year-old female patient with a history of breast carcinoma, which was surgically treated approximately 14 years ago. Patient was evaluated as glomus vagale because of clinical and radiologic characteristics. The resection of the mass was performed under general anesthesia, without any complications. The diagnosis of metastatic breast carcinoma was confirmed by histopathologic evaluation. In the differential diagnosis of cervical masses, the cervical metastasis of the breast carcinoma with mimicking clinical presentations should be kept in the mind; especially patients with breast cancer history.

Specific Anti-Leukemic Activity of the Peptide Warnericin RK and Analogues and Visualization of Their Effect on Cancer Cells by Chemical Raman Imaging

Antimicrobial peptides can be used as therapeutic agents against cancer cells. Warnericin RK and derivatives (WarnG20D and WarnF14V) were tested on various, solid tumor or leukemia, cancer cells. These peptides appeared to be cytotoxic on all the cell types tested, cancerous as well healthy, but very interestingly displayed no deleterious effect on healthy mononuclear cells. The mode of action of the peptide was proposed to be membranolytic, using chemical Raman imaging. Addition of peptide induced a large disorganization of the membrane leading to the loss of the content of inner compartments of Jurkat cell, whereas no effect was observed on the healthy mononuclear cells. The less hemolytic peptides WarnG20D and WarnF14V could be good candidates for the leukemia treatment.

Late onset (22 years) of simultaneous tonsillar and cervical lymph node metastases from breast ductal carcinoma

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide; the most common metastatic sites are lymph nodes, lung, liver, and brain. Tonsil metastases from breast cancer are extremely rare. Herein, we report a case of a 74-year-old woman with simultaneous occurrence of tonsillar and cervical lymph nodes metastases after a disease-free interval of 22 years.
