Effects of exercise and Kinesio taping on abdominal recovery in women with cesarean section: a pilot randomized controlled trial

Clinical effects and biological mechanisms of exercise on lumbar disc herniation

Lumbar Disc Herniation (LDH) is a syndrome in which lumbar disc degeneration, rupture of the annulus fibrosus, and herniation of the nucleus pulposus irritate and compress the nerve roots and cauda equina, resulting in the main manifestations of lumbar pain and/or lower extremity pain. There is evidence in various clinical areas that exercise is effective in treating LDH, and exercise intervention for more than 2 weeks reduces disease activity in LDH. However, the mechanism of exercise's action in reducing disease activity in LDH is unclear. In this article, we first summarize and highlight the effectiveness of exercise in treating LDH and provide guideline recommendations regarding exercise type, intensity, frequency, and duration. Then, we integrate the existing evidence and propose biological mechanisms for the potential effects of exercise on neuromechanical compression, inflammatory chemical stimuli, and autoimmune responses from the perspective of LDH pathogenesis as an entry point. However, a large body of evidence was obtained from non-LDH populations. Future research needs to investigate further the proposed biological mechanisms of exercise in reducing disease activity in LDH populations. This knowledge will contribute to the basic science and strengthen the scientific basis for prescribing exercise therapy for the routine clinical treatment of LDH.

The effect of Tubigrip and a rigid belt on rectus abdominus diastasis immediately postpartum: A randomised clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Rectus abdominis (RA) diastasis is a risk factor for abdominal muscle dysfunction and reduced quality of life postpartum. It is thought that supplementary abdominal supports might reduce the diastasis. However, there is limited research assessing the efficacy of abdominal supports/binding.

OBJECTIVE

To determine the effects of Tubigrip and a rigid abdominal belt in reducing RA diastasis in the first eight weeks postpartum.

DESIGN

Randomised clinical trial.

METHODS

62 women undertook ultrasound imaging to measure their RA diastasis prior to and after an eight week intervention wearing either Tubigrip or a rigid abdominal belt. Data analyses involved repeated measures ANOVA and correlational methods.

RESULTS

The RA diastasis reduced by 46% from a mean 4.6 cm-2.5 cm over the eight week intervention period with no significant difference (p > 0.05) across groups. Women wore the Tubigrip for a significantly (p < 0.05) longer number of hours (Median: 278) compared to those in the belt group (Median: 81 h). The length of time that women wore Tubigrip or the belt was not associated with the percentage reduction in the RA diastasis (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the diastasis across vaginal and Caesarean section deliveries at baseline. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in the percent reduction of the RA diastasis across deliveries post-intervention (vaginal delivery mean: 48% vs C-section: 40%).

CONCLUSION

There was no difference across groups post-intervention in the RA diastasis, and it is questionable whether either support improves upon that associated with natural healing alone.

Research hotspots and trends of Kinesio Taping from 2011 to 2020: a bibliometric analysis

The purpose of this study was to explore the research hotspots and trends of Kinesio Taping in the last decade and provide new sights in future studies. Publications in the area of Kinesio Taping were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection database between 2011 and 2020. Citespace software was used to analyze data on countries/regions, institutions, authors, co-cited references, and keywords. A total of 677 publications were obtained in the last decade. We identified the most prolific countries, institutions, and authors in the field of Kinesio Taping from 2011 to 2020. The annual number of publications showed an upward trend. The most prolific country and institution were Turkey and Hacettepe University, respectively. The author with the biggest number of publications was Gul Baltaci from Turkey. The top 5 most frequent keywords were "pain", "tape", "strength", "exercise", and "reliability". The keywords with the highest centrality were "proprioception", followed by "reliability", "clinical trial", "ankle", and "pain". Ten clusters were found and the biggest one was "quadricep". The top 9 keywords with the strongest bursts were detected and "trial" had the highest burst strength. The results from the bibliometric analysis provide hotspots and trends in the field of Kinesio Taping. It is still in the development stage of the past decade. Pain relief, sports injury prevention and treatment, and proprioception enhancement to improve postural control were the hotspots from 2011 to 2020. High-quality trials and standardized criteria for applications are needed in the future.

Immediate Effect of Kinesio Taping on Lumbopelvic Stability in Postpartum Women With Diastasis Recti: A Review

Diastasis of abdominal muscles is defined as a gap of more than two finger breadths between two rectal abdominal muscle bellies, above or below the umbilicus. According to the literature, female diastasis recti is more common in women who have recently given birth although it also occurs in the male population. Lower back pain is the most prevalent reason for postpartum women to restrict their everyday activities. Women's mobility, discomfort, and typical activities are all concerns for postpartum women, all of which change a person's quality of life. During pregnancy, diastasis of the rectus abdominal muscles is very common to occur. It is linked to instability of lumbar pelvic region and pelvic floor improper function. Recently, the use of Kinesio taping is gaining popularity as a technique to reduce the separation and increase stability. The review of studies revealed that Kinesio taping is highly effective for diastasis recti and in improving the stability of lumbo-pelvic spine which was evaluated by an active straight leg raise test. There are just a few studies accessible that show the need for further research.

The effects of Kinesio taping and breathing exercises on pain management after gynaecological abdominal surgery: A randomized controlled study

AIM

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Kinesio taping and breathing exercises on pain management after gynaecological abdominal surgery.

METHODS

This randomized controlled study was conducted with 132 participants at a public hospital between June 2017 and 2018. The Kinesio taping method was applied once, immediately after the surgery during the hospital stay and breathing exercises were performed three times a day for 30 min on the first, second and third post-operative days.

RESULTS

The median age of the women was 47 years. The mean body mass index was 27.6 ± 5.0 kg/m² . When the intervention and control groups were compared, the level of women's pain in the Kinesio taping group was significantly reduced. There was also a statistically significant difference in terms of the passage of gas and defecation time and wound healing in groups with Kinesio taping.

CONCLUSIONS

Kinesio taping has been shown to be an effective intervention in the management of acute pain after surgery. The results of this study suggest that future studies may be indicated to study taping in other surgical conditions.

Safety and efficacy of therapeutic taping in primary dysmenorrhea: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is a common gynecological condition among adolescent and adult women. Several pharmacological and alternative therapies (e.g. therapeutic taping) have been used to treat PD, with varying effect. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of therapeutic taping on clinical symptoms of PD, considering pain as the primary outcome. MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Embase, PEDro, CINAHL and gray literature sources were searched from inception to February 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the effect of therapeutic taping for PD. The language was restricted to English. A total of ten studies were included in the systematic review, involving 685 participants. Eight studies were included in quantitative analysis. The quality of the studies ranged from 4 to 7 with a median of 5 as assessed by PEDro scale. Meta-analyses indicated short-term improvements of pain compared to sham and no interventions. Elastic therapeutic taping (ETT) indicated short term improvements in anxiety associated with PD. Moderate to high quality of evidence suggested that ETT is an effective intervention in improving pain, anxiety, and quality of life of women with PD. A scarcity of evidence on the long-term effects of therapeutic taping in PD is observed.

Static and dynamic postural control of postpartum women of different delivery methods

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a difference in postural control between nulligravida women and women who have given birth by vaginal or cesarean section.

METHODS

Women who had only vaginal delivery in the previous 1-3 years were included in the vaginal delivery group (n = 27), those who had only cesarean delivery in the previous 1-3 years were included in the cesarean section group (n = 28), and those who had never given birth were included in the control group (n = 32). Evaluations were administered 6-8 days after the ovulation phase. Postural control of the participants was evaluated with the computerized dynamic posturography device.

RESULTS

A total of 87 women with a mean age of 29.4 ± 4 years and a mean body mass index of 24.1 ± 3.1 kg/m2 were included in the study. Antero-posterior somatosensory organization test values of the vaginal delivery group were lower than the control group (p = 0.0016). The cesarean delivery group had statistically lower antero-posterior somatosensory (p < 0.001 and p = 0.0013) and medio-lateral somatosensory (p = 0.002 and p = 0.017, respectively) test scores compared to the control group and the vaginal delivery group.

CONCLUSIONS

It was observed that women who birthed with vaginal or cesarean delivery had impaired somatosensory postural control. There is definitely a need for further studies with a long-term follow-up examining the effects of postural control during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Effectiveness of face-to-face physiotherapy training and education for women who are undergoing elective caesarean section: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Caesarean Section (CS) is associated with numerous post-operative problems. The current literature reveals that physiotherapy interventions such as pelvic floor rehabilitation and post-surgical rehabilitation enable enhanced recovery in the post-operative period. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of face-to-face physiotherapy training and education prior to elective CS in improving post-operative outcomes.

METHODS

A single blind parallel randomized controlled study was carried out at De Soysa Hospital for Women (DSHW), Colombo. Fifty-four women who were to undergo elective CS were recruited to the study. The women in the intervention group (n = 27) received face-to-face physiotherapy training and education; the control group (n = 27) received only the standard nursing care. Outcome measures such as perception of post-operative pain, dosage of additional analgesics required, pain upon returning to functional activities and lengths of hospital stay were collected. Results were analyzed using IBM SPSS 20 using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test.

RESULTS

Mean post-operative pain score (control group; 4.2±0.46 vs. intervention group; 1.7±0.7) and doses of additional analgesics required were significantly higher in the control group than that of the intervention group. Pain upon returning to functional activities decreased significantly within 2 days in both groups, and values were lower in the intervention group. The intervention group showed a shorter hospital stay than the control group (control group;3.9 ± 0.3 vs. intervention group;3.00 ± 0.0) (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Face-to-face physiotherapy training and education prior to elective CS appears to be a promising intervention to improve the post-operative outcomes by reducing post-operative pain, doses of additional analgesics required, pain upon returning to functional activities and lengths of hospital stay.

The effectiveness and safety of complementary health approaches to managing postpartum pain: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

Women experience pain from a number of causes during the postpartum period. Although pharmacological pain relief has shown to be effective, the efficacy of non-pharmacological methods of pain relief will be of interest to breastfeeding women. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the efficacy and safety of complementary approaches to manage postpartum pain.

Methods

A search of English language databases from their inception to 2020 was undertaken for randomised controlled trials and included primiparous and multiparous women who experienced postpartum pain up to two weeks post birth. The primary outcome was pain. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.

Results

Thirty trials were included in the review, 25 trials (2,413 women) were included in the meta-analysis. Two trials of massage found a reduction in pain following caesarean birth within the first 24 h post birth (MD -2.64, 95–2.82 to -2.46, 184 women, I² 0%), and at seven days postpartum (MD -1.91, 95%CI -2.42 to -1.40, 2 trials, 120 women I² 37%). Two trials conducted with women receiving an episiotomy found reduction in perineal pain from herbal ointments within 24 h (MD -1.33, 95% CI -.96 to -0.70, 221 women) and at 14 days postpartum (MD -0.74, 95% CI -1.02 to -0.47, 4 trials). Few trials reported on safety, few trials were at an overall low risk of bias, and overall the quality of evidence was very low.

Conclusion

Further high quality trials are needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of herbal ointment and massage during the early postpartum period.

The impacts of parity on spirometric parameters: a systematic review

Introduction: The relationship between parity and health outcomes has been debated in the scientific literature in terms of 'selection-pressure'. However, no previous review has raised the impacts of parity on spirometric parameters. This Systematic Review aimed to review the impacts of parity on spirometric parameters.Areas covered: PubMed and Scopus were searched on October 1^st, 2020, using the combination of the following two medical subject headings: 'Parity' and 'Respiratory Function Tests'. Only original articles published in English/French were retained. Ten studies investigated the impacts of parity on spirometric parameters: six included healthy females, three involved unhealthy females [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, defect in protease inhibitor, and some other conditions] and one included a mixed population of healthy/unhealthy females. The studies reported conflicting results: no impact, positive impact (multiparity is associated with larger forced-expiratory-volume in one second, forced- and slow- vital-capacity, and inspiratory-capacity), or negative impact (multiparous females has lower bronchial flows, higher static volumes, an accelerated lung-aging, a tendency to an obstructive-ventilatory-defect and/or to lung-hyperinflation, and increased protease inhibitor levels).Expert opinion: The ten studies presented some limitations that made data interpretation relatively difficult. Future research to identify the 'real' impact of parity on spirometric parameters are therefore encouraged.

A systematic review of patient-reported outcome measures to assess postpartum pain using Consensus Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guidelines

BACKGROUND

We performed a systematic review using Consensus Based Standards for the Selection of Health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guidelines to identify the best available patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) of postpartum pain.

METHODS

This review follows COSMIN guidelines. We searched four databases with no date limiters, for previously identified validated PROMs used to assess postpartum pain. PROMs evaluating more than one author-defined domain of postpartum pain were assessed. We sought studies evaluating psychometric properties. An overall rating was then assigned based upon COSMIN analysis, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to assess the level of evidence for psychometric properties of included PROMs. These assessments were used to make recommendations and identify the best PROM to assess postpartum pain.

RESULTS

We identified 19 studies using seven PROMs (involving 3511 women), which evaluated postpartum pain. All included studies evaluated ≥1 psychometric property of the included PROMs. An adequate number of pain domains was assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), Short Form-BPI (SF-BPI), and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ). The SF-BPI was the only PROM to demonstrate adequate content validity and at least a low-level of evidence for sufficient internal consistency, resulting in a Class A recommendation (the best performing instrument, recommended for use).

CONCLUSION

SF-BPI is the best currently available PROM to assess postpartum pain. However, it fails to assess several important domains and only just met the criteria for a Class A recommendation. Future studies are warranted to develop, evaluate, and implement a new PROM designed to specifically assess postpartum pain.

Comparison of the Effect of Kinesio Taping and Manual Lymphatic Drainage on Breast Engorgement in Postpartum Women: A Randomized-Controlled Trial

Objectives: To investigate the effect of kinesio taping (KT) and manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) on pain severity, breast engorgement, and milk volume in postpartum women. Materials and Methods: In this prospective randomized-controlled trial, we recruited 67 postpartum women who had breast engorgement and randomly assigned them to the KT, MLD, and control group. In the KT group, taping plus breast care was performed, MLD plus breast care was performed in the MLD group, and in the control group, only routine breast care was given for 10 days. Pain, breast engorgement, body temperature, and milk volume were measured. Examinations were repeated on days 1, 4, and 10. Results: The MLD group had significant reductions in pain and breast engorgement at all postintervention days compared with the control and KT group (p < 0.05). Milk volume increased among three groups, but the change in the MLD group was higher than in the KT and control groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the milk volume among the KT and control groups at all postintervention days (p > 0.05). Conclusions: MLD relieved breast pain and firmness more and increased milk volume in postpartum women compared with the KT and control groups. MLD can be recommended to postnatal mothers to better manage breast engorgement.

Complementary and alternative therapies for post-caesarean pain

BACKGROUND

Pain after caesarean sections (CS) can affect the well-being of the mother and her ability with her newborn. Conventional pain-relieving strategies are often underused because of concerns about the adverse maternal and neonatal effects. Complementary alternative therapies (CAM) may offer an alternative for post-CS pain.

OBJECTIVES

To assess the effects of CAM for post-caesarean pain.

SEARCH METHODS

We searched Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth's Trials Register, LILACS, PEDro, CAMbase, ClinicalTrials.gov and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP) (6 September 2019), and checked the reference lists of retrieved articles.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), including quasi-RCTs and cluster-RCTs, comparing CAM, alone or associated with other forms of pain relief, versus other treatments or placebo or no treatment, for the treatment of post-CS pain.

DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

Two review authors independently performed study selection, extracted data, assessed risk of bias and assessed the certainty of evidence using GRADE.

MAIN RESULTS

We included 37 studies (3076 women) which investigated eight different CAM therapies for post-CS pain relief. There is substantial heterogeneity among the trials. We downgraded the certainty of evidence due to small numbers of women participating in the trials and to risk of bias related to lack of blinding and inadequate reporting of randomisation processes. None of the trials reported pain at six weeks after discharge. Primary outcomes were pain and adverse effects, reported per intervention below. Secondary outcomes included vital signs, rescue analgesic requirement at six weeks after discharge; all of which were poorly reported, not reported, or we are uncertain as to the effect Acupuncture or acupressure We are very uncertain if acupuncture or acupressure (versus no treatment) or acupuncture or acupressure plus analgesia (versus placebo plus analgesia) has any effect on pain because the quality of evidence is very low. Acupuncture or acupressure plus analgesia (versus analgesia) may reduce pain at 12 hours (standardised mean difference (SMD) -0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.64 to 0.07; 130 women; 2 studies; low-certainty evidence) and 24 hours (SMD -0.63, 95% CI -0.99 to -0.26; 2 studies; 130 women; low-certainty evidence). It is uncertain whether acupuncture or acupressure (versus no treatment) or acupuncture or acupressure plus analgesia (versus analgesia) has any effect on the risk of adverse effects because the quality of evidence is very low. Aromatherapy Aromatherapy plus analgesia may reduce pain when compared with placebo plus analgesia at 12 hours (mean difference (MD) -2.63 visual analogue scale (VAS), 95% CI -3.48 to -1.77; 3 studies; 360 women; low-certainty evidence) and 24 hours (MD -3.38 VAS, 95% CI -3.85 to -2.91; 1 study; 200 women; low-certainty evidence). We are uncertain if aromatherapy plus analgesia has any effect on adverse effects (anxiety) compared with placebo plus analgesia. Electromagnetic therapy Electromagnetic therapy may reduce pain compared with placebo plus analgesia at 12 hours (MD -8.00, 95% CI -11.65 to -4.35; 1 study; 72 women; low-certainty evidence) and 24 hours (MD -13.00 VAS, 95% CI -17.13 to -8.87; 1 study; 72 women; low-certainty evidence). Massage We identified six studies (651 women), five of which were quasi-RCTs, comparing massage (foot and hand) plus analgesia versus analgesia. All the evidence relating to pain, adverse effects (anxiety), vital signs and rescue analgesic requirement was very low-certainty. Music Music plus analgesia may reduce pain when compared with placebo plus analgesia at one hour (SMD -0.84, 95% CI -1.23 to -0.46; participants = 115; studies = 2; I2 = 0%; low-certainty evidence), 24 hours (MD -1.79, 95% CI -2.67 to -0.91; 1 study; 38 women; low-certainty evidence), and also when compared with analgesia at one hour (MD -2.11, 95% CI -3.11 to -1.10; 1 study; 38 women; low-certainty evidence) and at 24 hours (MD -2.69, 95% CI -3.67 to -1.70; 1 study; 38 women; low-certainty evidence). It is uncertain whether music plus analgesia has any effect on adverse effects (anxiety), when compared with placebo plus analgesia because the quality of evidence is very low. Reiki We are uncertain if Reiki plus analgesia compared with analgesia alone has any effect on pain, adverse effects, vital signs or rescue analgesic requirement because the quality of evidence is very low (one study, 90 women). Relaxation Relaxation may reduce pain compared with standard care at 24 hours (MD -0.53 VAS, 95% CI -1.05 to -0.01; 1 study; 60 women; low-certainty evidence). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation TENS (versus no treatment) may reduce pain at one hour (MD -2.26, 95% CI -3.35 to -1.17; 1 study; 40 women; low-certainty evidence). TENS plus analgesia (versus placebo plus analgesia) may reduce pain compared with placebo plus analgesia at one hour (SMD -1.10 VAS, 95% CI -1.37 to -0.82; 3 studies; 238 women; low-certainty evidence) and at 24 hours (MD -0.70 VAS, 95% CI -0.87 to -0.53; 108 women; 1 study; low-certainty evidence). TENS plus analgesia (versus placebo plus analgesia) may reduce heart rate (MD -7.00 bpm, 95% CI -7.63 to -6.37; 108 women; 1 study; low-certainty evidence) and respiratory rate (MD -1.10 brpm, 95% CI -1.26 to -0.94; 108 women; 1 study; low-certainty evidence). We are uncertain if TENS plus analgesia (versus analgesia) has any effect on pain at six hours or 24 hours, or vital signs because the quality of evidence is very low (two studies, 92 women).

AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS

Some CAM therapies may help reduce post-CS pain for up to 24 hours. The evidence on adverse events is too uncertain to make any judgements on safety and we have no evidence about the longer-term effects on pain. Since pain control is the most relevant outcome for post-CS women and their clinicians, it is important that future studies of CAM for post-CS pain measure pain as a primary outcome, preferably as the proportion of participants with at least moderate (30%) or substantial (50%) pain relief. Measuring pain as a dichotomous variable would improve the certainty of evidence and it is easy to understand for non-specialists. Future trials also need to be large enough to detect effects on clinical outcomes; measure other important outcomes as listed lin this review, and use validated scales.

The effect of kinesio taping and lifestyle changes on pain, body awareness and quality of life in primary dysmenorrhea

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of kinesio taping and lifestyle changes on pain, body awareness, and quality of life in individuals with primary dysmenorrhea (PD). Subjects in the first group underwent kinesio taping and lifestyle changes and subjects in the second group were instructed only lifestyle changes. The pain levels were evaluated using a visual analogue scale, menstrual symptoms using the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire, health-related life quality using the Short Form-36, and changes in body awareness using the Body Awareness Questionnaire form. Pain intensity decreased, and body awareness and quality of life increased in both groups (p < 0.05). However, in the first group, pain severity decreased more, and body awareness and quality of life increased more (p < 0.05). As a result, it is thought that both kinesio taping and lifestyle changes can be used to improve quality of life and body awareness and to decrease pain level.

The impacts of parity on lung function data (LFD) of healthy females aged 40 years and more issued from an upper middle income country (Algeria): A comparative study

BACKGROUND

Studies evaluating the impacts of parity on LFD of healthy females presented controversial conclusions.

AIM

To compare the LFD of healthy females broken down according to their parities.

METHODS

A medical questionnaire was administered and anthropometric data were determined. Two groups [G1 (n = 34): ≤ 6; G2 (n = 32): > 6] and three classes [C1 (n = 15): 1-4; C2 (n = 28): 5-8; C3 (n = 23): 9-14] of parities were identified. LFD (plethysmography, specific airway resistance (sRaw)] were determined. Student's t-test and ANOVA test with post-Hoc test were used to compare the two groups' and the three classes' data.

RESULTS

G1 and G2 were age and height matched; however, compared to G1, G2 had a lower body mass index (BMI). C1, C2 and C3 were height, weight and BMI matched; however, compared to C2, C3 was older. G1 and G2 had similar values of FEV1, forced- and slow- vital capacities (FVC, SVC), maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF), forced expiratory flow at x% of FVC (FEFx%), peak expiratory flow (PEF), expiratory and inspiratory reserve volumes (ERV, IRV, respectively), inspiratory capacity (IC), sRaw, FEV1/FVC, FEV1/SVC, and residual volume/total lung capacity (RV/TLC). The three classes had similar values of MMEF, FEFx%, PEF, thoracic gas volume (TGV), ERV, IRV, FEV1/FVC, FEV1/SVC and RV/TLC. Compared to G1, G2 had higher TGV (2.68±0.43 vs. 3.00±0.47 L), RV (1.80±0.29 vs. 2.04±0.33 L) and TLC (4.77±0.62 vs. 5.11±0.67 L). Compared to C1, C2 had higher FEV1 (2.14±0.56 vs. 2.47±0.33 L), FVC (2.72±0.65 vs. 3.19±0.41 L), SVC (2.74±0.61 vs. 3.24±0.41 L), TLC (4.47±0.59 vs. 5.10±0.58 L), IC (1.92±0.41 vs. 2.34±0.39 L) and sRaw (4.70±1.32 vs. 5.75±1.18 kPa*s). Compared to C1, C3 had higher TLC (4.47±0.59 vs. 5.05±0.68 L) and RV (1.75±0.29 vs. 2.04±0.30 L).

CONCLUSION

Increasing parity induced a tendency towards lung-hyperinflation.

Effect of Elastic Therapeutic Taping on Abdominal Muscle Endurance in Patients With Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Randomized, Controlled, Single-Blind, Crossover Trial

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to determine the immediate effect of elastic therapeutic taping and sham taping of the abdominal musculature on maximum hold time of endurance tests in patients with chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP).

METHODS

Twenty-six people with CNLBP and 26 asymptomatic individuals were included in this study. The CNLBP participants were allocated to an elastic therapeutic tape group or a sham tape group. Standard adhesive elastic therapeutic tape was utilized for facilitatory application in the elastic therapeutic tape group. The elastic therapeutic tape group received real elastic therapeutic taping on the transversus abdominis and internal obliques, and the sham tape group received sham elastic therapeutic taping application. For the sham group, the elastic therapeutic tape was positioned horizontally above the navel and applied without tension. After a wash-out period, each CNLBP participant was switched to the other group. Outcome measures included maximum hold time of supine isometric chest raise, supine double straight-leg raise, and abdominal drawing in maneuver.

RESULTS

The CNLBP participants had lower maximum hold time compared to the asymptomatic individuals (P ≤ .01). Following taping, both groups showed an increase in the maximum hold time (mean difference = 4.43 - 50.69 seconds; P ≤ .02). Although there was no difference between the results of both groups (P ≥ .12), effect sizes were large for the elastic therapeutic tape group (Cohen's d = -1.93 to -1.00).

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that the maximum hold time of endurance tests was decreased in CNLBP patients compared to healthy participants. The application of both elastic therapeutic tape and sham tape to the transversus abdominis and internal obliques produced short-term improvement in abdominal endurance. There was no statistically significant difference between the results of elastic therapeutic tape and sham tape.

Influence of pelvic padding and Kinesiology Taping on pain perception, kinematics, and kinetics of falls in female volleyball athletes

BACKGROUND

Volleyball digging techniques may cause pelvic injuries among female volleyball athletes. Pelvic padding and Kinesiology Taping (KT) may reduce impact force and pain and improve posture during a fall. This study examined the effects of pelvic padding and KT on pain perception, fall kinematics, and kinetics among female volleyball athletes.

METHODS

Twenty-four female volleyball athletes were exposed to two pelvic padding scenarios (with and without padding) and two KT conditions (with and without KT applied on the rectus abdominis muscle) during a fall in the forward direction. The maximum impact force during landing and maximum acceleration of the pelvis were registered using a force platform and an accelerometer, respectively. The maximum lumbar (hyper) extension angle, forward reach distance, and total fall time were measured by video analysis. Pain level was quantified using a visual analog scale.

RESULTS

The application of pelvic padding (with and without KT) reduced pain when compared to the no padding condition (p < 0.008). Applying KT alone reduced forward reach distance when compared to the 'pelvic padding and KT' condition (p < 0.010). In fact, when both pelvic padding and KT were applied, participants reached further when compared to the 'no pelvic padding and no KT' condition (p < 0.001). No significant main and interaction effects were found in all other outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

Volleyball shorts with pelvic pads are recommended for female volleyball athletes to reduce pain in the digging maneuver and may help to increase their forward reach distance. However, KT is not recommended as it reduces the forward reach distance and cannot reduce pain or improve fall kinematics and kinetics.

Kinesio Taping vs. Placebo in Reducing Pregnancy-Related Low Back Pain: A Cross-Over Study

Background

Spinal pain affects approximately 45–56% of pregnant women. Kinesio taping (KT) involves application of flexible water-resistant elastic bands on the patient’s body, resulting in painless and non-invasive stimulation. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of KT on reduction of low back pain in pregnant women.

Material/Methods

Kinesio Tex Gold tapes were applied using the muscular-ligament technique and Polovis Plus textile cladding blinded the sample. The starting position for the KT and placebo with lumbar spine flexion with rotation was in the opposite direction to the application. An “I”-shaped application was used. The material included 106 women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, with low back pain. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Polish version of the Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ-2004) were used for pain assessment. Participants were randomly divided into 2 groups. KT and placebo were used alternately in 2 groups.

Results

Mean pain intensity on the 2^nd and 7^th post-application days was significantly lower in the study group than in the control group. Mean scores for the RMDQ differed significantly before and after KT (p<0.0001), and after KT and placebo (p<0.0057), but there are no differences before and after placebo (p<0.67) and before KT and placebo (p<0.59).

Conclusions

Low back pain in pregnant women decreased significantly after KT when compared to placebo. The therapeutic effect appeared on day 2 and continued after removal of the tape. The few side effects did not affect the course of the study.

Low back pain during pregnancy and Kinesio tape application

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Low back pain is a common problem during pregnancy. Although the pain usually occurs in the third trimester, it might be seen in the first trimester, too. There are various types of applications for the treatment of low back pain during pregnancy. However, there is a lack of evidence for the effectiveness of each method. If there is not an obvious deficit, bed rest, exercise, conventional physiotherapy, using protective principles for the lumbar area are recommended, since the main and the only complaint is low back pain. It is aimed in the current review to investigate the use of Kinesio tape in the low back pain seen during pregnancy and to review the literature related to this subject.

CONCLUSION

There are only a few studies investigating the effect of Kinesio tape during pregnancy in the literature and they mostly did not aim to study the low back pain, further evidence and studies are needed to investigate the use of Kinesio tape for the low back pain seen during pregnancy as there is not evidence strong enough. Kinesiotape application aims to increase circulation and mobility, and regarding these gains decreased pain and increased performance are expected.

Low Back Pain Response to Pelvic Tilt Position: An Observational Study of Chiropractic Patients

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to look for differences between patients with an increased pain response as compared with those with a decreased pain response.

METHODS

Data were collected from consecutive new patients with lumbar or lumbopelvic pain in a chiropractic clinic. A pelvic tilt exercise was included in the initial examination, and pain response was noted. Analysis was made of pain and disability severity, as well as symptom location, chronicity, and other characteristics, before and after a course of chiropractic care.

RESULTS

Patients with an increased pain response to pelvic tilt (n = 12) had higher levels of pain and disability at baseline than patients without (n = 34). There were no between-group differences in other aspects of their complaints; in age, sex, or body mass; or in the types of care they received (eg, manipulation, stretching, exercise instruction). On the average, both groups of patients showed improvement with chiropractic care, and there was no detectable difference in improvement between groups.

CONCLUSIONS

This study found that patients experiencing pain in response to a pelvic tilt maneuver may have a poorer precare status than patients with a decreased pain response.
