Abstract
BACKGROUND Contemporary data on vision impairment form an important basis for public health policies. However, most data on the clinical epidemiology of blindness are limited by small sample sizes and focused not on systemic conditions but ophthalmic diseases only. In this study, we examined the ten-year trends of blindness prevalence and its correlation with systemic health status in Korean adults. METHODS This study investigated 10,000,000 participants randomly extracted from the entire Korean population (aged ≥ 20 years) who underwent a National Health Insurance Service health checkup between 2009 and 2018. Participants with blindness, defined as visual acuity in the better-seeing eye of ≤ 20/200, were identified. The prevalence of blindness was assessed, and the systemic health status was compared between participants with blindness and without blindness. RESULTS The mean prevalence of blindness was 0.473% (47,115 blindness cases) and tended to decrease over ten years (0.586% in 2009 and 0.348% in 2018; P < 0.001). The following factors were significantly associated with blindness: female sex, underweight (body mass index < 18.5), high serum creatinine (> 1.5 mg/dL), and bilateral hearing loss. In addition, except for those aged 30-39 and 40-49 years, high fasting glucose (≥ 126 mg/dL) and low hemoglobin (male: < 12 g/dL, female: < 10 g/dL) were significantly correlated with prevalent blindness. CONCLUSION Our ten-year Korean nationwide population-based study suggested a gradual decrease in the prevalence of blindness and its association with specific systemic health status. These conditions might be the cause or consequence of blindness and can be used as a reference for the prevention and/or rehabilitation of blindness to establish public health policies.

Abstract
Background: In Usher syndrome, deafness is congenital and blindness is acquired. Therefore, the progressive loss of one of the two senses forces individuals with this syndrome to reorganize their everyday tasks and relationships, creating new strategies to communicate, access information, and move within a given space. This reorganization can interfere with the subjects' capacity to build a good quality of life.Methods: We conducted a scoping review of both peer-reviewed and gray literature, to identify existing evidence of the role of psychosocial determinants on the quality of life of people with Usher syndrome.Results: Twenty-one references met the inclusion criteria. Findings suggest that people with Usher syndrome seem to adjust their life habits to their condition, maintaining hope for the future, and believe in their capacities to accomplish their goals in spite of the various difficulties they encounter. However, this scoping review highlights a lack of research on adaptive strategies, as well as a lack of knowledge concerning the integration of the syndrome in one's identity, the relations to caregivers, and the specificities of the psychotherapeutic support. More information on these topics would enable better-adjusted social, psychotherapeutic, and medical responses.Implications for rehabilitationUsher syndrome, a rare genetic disease, leads to deafblindness, a cluster of related multiple sensory disabilities. People with Usher encounter several obstacles in their daily life. It is also difficult to adapt to the progressive loss of hearing and sight.This paper proposes a scoping review: we identify the main adaptation strategies used by people with Usher Syndrome in order to become autonomous in spite of these obstacles. In becoming more autonomous, they come to a better quality of life.We summarize the most frequent adaptation strategies (at school, work, leisure, interpersonal relationships, etc.) to help programs aimed at rehabilitation for people with Usher syndrome, and to find unexplored research perspectives (e.g., psychotherapies).

Abstract
The co-occurrence of hearing impairment and visual dysfunction is devastating. Most deaf-blind etiologies are genetically determined, the commonest being Usher syndrome (USH). While studies of the congenitally deaf population reveal a variable degree of visual problems, there are no effective ophthalmic screening guidelines. We hypothesized that children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and vestibular impairment were at an increased risk of having USH. A retrospective chart review of 33 cochlear implants recipients for severe to profound SNHL and measured vestibular dysfunction was performed to determine the ocular phenotype. All the cases had undergone ocular examination and electroretinogram (ERG). Patients with an abnormal ERG underwent genetic testing for USH. We found an underlying ocular abnormality in 81.81% (27/33) of cases; of which 75% had refractive errors, and 50% of those patients showed visual improvement with refractive correction. A total of 14 cases (42.42%; 14/33) had generalized rod-cone dysfunction on ERG suggestive of Usher syndrome type 1, confirmed by mutational analysis. This work shows that adding vestibular impairment as a criterion for requesting an eye exam and adding the ERG to detect USH increases the chances of detecting ocular anomalies, when compared with previous literature focusing only on congenital SNHL.
