Simultaneous acquisition of 40- and 80-Hz auditory steady-state responses for a direct comparison of response amplitude, residual noise and signal-to-noise ratio

The effect of motion frequency and sound source frequency on steady-state auditory motion evoked potential

The ability of humans to perceive motion sound sources is important for accurate response to the living environment. Periodic motion sound sources can elicit steady-state motion auditory evoked potential (SSMAEP). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different motion frequencies and different frequencies of sound source on SSMAEP. The stimulation paradigms for simulating periodic motion of sound sources were designed utilizing head-related transfer function (HRTF) techniques in this study. The motion frequencies of the paradigm are set respectively to 1-10 Hz, 15 Hz, 20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz, 60 Hz, and 80 Hz. In addition, the frequencies of sound source of the paradigms were set to 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, 2000 Hz, 3000 Hz, and 4000 Hz at motion frequencies of 6 Hz and 40 Hz. Fourteen subjects with normal hearing were recruited for the study. SSMAEP was elicited by 500 Hz pure tone at motion frequencies of 1-10 Hz, 15 Hz, 20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz, 60 Hz, and 80 Hz. SSMAEP was strongest at motion frequencies of 6 Hz. Moreover, at 6 Hz motion frequency, the SSMAEP amplitude was largest at the tone frequency of 500 Hz and smallest at 4000 Hz. Whilst SSMAEP elicited by 4000 Hz pure tone was significantly the strongest at motion frequency of 40 Hz. SSMAEP can be elicited by periodic motion sound sources at motion frequencies up to 80 Hz. SSMAEP also has a strong response at lower frequency. Low-frequency pure tones are beneficial to enhance SSMAEP at low-frequency sound source motion, whilst high-frequency pure tones help to enhance SSMAEP at high-frequency sound source motion. The study provides new insight into the brain's perception of rhythmic auditory motion.

Potential Destructive Binaural Interaction Effects in Auditory Steady-State Response Measurements

An aided sound-field auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has the potential to be used to objectively validate hearing-aid (HA) fittings in clinics. Each aided ear should ideally be tested independently, but it is suspected that binaural testing may be used by clinics to reduce test time. This study simulates dichotic ASSR sound-field conditions to examine the risk of making false judgments due to unchecked binaural effects. Unaided ASSRs were recorded with a clinical two-channel electroencephalography (EEG) system for 15 normal hearing subjects using a three-band CE-Chirp® stimulus. It was found that the noise corrected power of a response harmonic can be suppressed by up to 10 dB by introducing large interaural time differences equal to half the time period of the stimulus envelope, which may occur in unilateral HA users. These large interaural time differences also changed the expression of ASSR power across the scalp, resulting in dramatically altered topographies. This would lead to considerably lower measured response power and possibly nondetections, evidencing that even well fit HAs are fit poorly (false referral), whereas monaural ASSR tests would pass. No effect was found for simulated lateralizations of the stimulus, which is beneficial for a proposed aided ASSR approach. Full-scalp ASSR recordings match previously found 40 Hz topographies but demonstrate suppression of cortical ASSR sources when using stimuli in interaural envelope antiphase.

Chirp-evoked auditory steady-state response: The effect of repetition rate

OBJECTIVE

The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is commonly used in clinical pediatric audiology in order to provide an electrophysiological estimate of hearing threshold, and has the potential to be used in unsupervised mobile EEG applications. Enhancement of the ASSR amplitude through optimization of the stimulation and recording methods shortens the required testing time or reduce the offset between the electrophysiological and behavioral thresholds. Here, we investigate the spatial distribution of the ASSR to broadband chirp stimuli across a wide range of repetition rates on the scalp and in the ears. Moreover, the ASSR amplitude is compared across repetition rates for commonly used electrode configurations.

METHODS

ASSR to chirp stimuli with repetition rates from 6-198 Hz was recorded using scalp EEG and high-density ear-EEG.

RESULTS

The distributions of the ASSR amplitude and phase were found to be dependent on the chirp repetition rate across the scalp, but independent of repetition rate in the ears. The normal drop in ASSR SNR for high repetition rates seen for click and pure tone stimuli was not found for chirp stimuli. Instead, the ASSR SNRs for chirp stimuli at high repetition rates (95-198 Hz) were found to be comparable to that found at 40 Hz for scalp EEG and even higher than 40 Hz ASSR for ear-EEG.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results, use of chirp stimuli with high repetition rates (95-198 Hz) is advantageous for multiple stimulus ASSR recording in both clinical practice and mobile real-life applications.
