Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive disorder is a complex mental health condition in which the etiopathogenesis involves several factors. Suitable biomarkers for the development of depression have not yet been established. Alterations in cytokines are assumed to be involved in the pathophysiology of depressive disorder. Adipokines (also known as adipocytokines) are important factors that not only regulate the energy balance but also regulate the inflammatory and immune responses. This study investigated the serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, chemerin, and fetuin A and the possible role of these adipokines in depressive disorder. METHODS We recruited a total of 73 patients diagnosed with recurrent depressive disorder (rDD) and 54 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). Serum adipocytokines were determined using ELISA kits (R&D, USA). The serum levels of the investigated molecules between depressive patients and HCs were compared, and diagnostic values were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve method for discriminating depressive patients from HCs. Correlations between the molecules and clinical variables were also evaluated. RESULTS Patients with rDD had lower levels of serum adiponectin and chemerin and higher levels of serum leptin, resistin and fetuin A (p < 0.05) vs. controls. Moreover, ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) values of above set of adipocytkines were >0.7, with a sensitivity and specificity over 80% in discriminating patients with rDD from HCs. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that circulating adipocytokies may hold promise as biomarkers for the diagnosis of rDD.

Abstract
Adipokines, which have pleiotropic activities, are known to be involved in inflammation as adipocytokines. The aim of the current study was to investigate selected adipocytokine levels in the serum of stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD patients and healthy controls, to assess a potential association between the investigated biomarkers and selected parameters and to conduct receiving operating curve (ROC) analysis. Twenty-five COPD patients and 30 healthy controls were enrolled in the current study. Serum levels of adiponectin, leptin, resistin, chemerin and fetuin A were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Both leptin and resistin concentrations were significantly elevated in COPD patients and differentiated them from control subjects. Fetuin A levels were lower in COPD patients and may be related to the disease. Further studies in larger cohorts are needed to confirm the findings of this exploratory study.

Abstract
Our study aimed to evaluate the association between fetuin-A levels and the presence of radiographic sacroiliitis and syndesmophytes in patients with early axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and to identify potential predictors of radiographic damage in the sacroiliac joints (SIJs) after 24 months. Patients diagnosed with axSpA in the Italian cohort of the SpondyloArthritis-Caught-Early (SPACE) study were included. Physical examinations, laboratory tests (including fetuin-A), SIJ,+ and spinal X-rays and MRIs at T0 (diagnosis) and at T24 were considered. Radiographic damage in the SIJs was defined according to the modified New York criteria (mNY). Fifty-seven patients were included in this analysis (41.2% male, median (interquartile range), chronic back pain [CBP] duration of 12 (8-18) months). Fetuin-A levels were significantly lower in patients with radiographic sacroiliitis compared to those without at T0 (207.9 (181.7-215.9) vs. 239.9 (217.9-286.9), respectively, p < 0.001) and at T24 (207.6 (182.5-246.5) vs. 261.1 (210.2-286.6) µg/mL, p = 0.03). At T0, fetuin-A levels were significantly higher in non-smokers, in patients with heel enthesitis and in those with a family history of axSpA; fetuin-A levels at T24 were higher in females, in patients with higher ESR or CRP at T0 and in those with radiographic sacroiliitis at T0. Fetuin-A levels at T0 were independently negatively associated with the likelihood of radiographic sacroiliitis (OR = 0.9 per 10-unit increase (95% CI 0.8, 0.999), p = 0.048); but not with the presence of syndesmophytes. After adjustment for confounders, fetuin-A levels at T0 and T24 were also negatively associated with mNY at T0 (β -0.5, p < 0.001) and at T24 (β -0.3, p < 0.001), respectively. Among other variables at T0, fetuin-A levels did not achieve statistical significance in predicting mNY at T24. Fetuin-A levels were negatively associated with radiographic damage of the SIJs, but not of the spine, in early axSpA and after 2 years of follow-up. Our findings suggest that fetuin-A levels may serve as a biomarker to identify patients with a higher risk of developing severe disease and early structural damage.

Abstract
There is little evidence regarding the association between living arrangement and depression, and no studies have examined the age- and gender-specific differences in this association. The present study sought to examine the longitudinal changes in depression patterns between isolative living versus living in company among middle-aged and older men and women by obtaining data from waves 1-7 of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KloSA), which comprises a sample of persons at least 45 years of age in the Republic of Korea (2273 middle-aged and 1387 older men, 2805 middle aged and 1862 older women). Depression scores were based on the self-reported Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) short forms. Using mixed-effect linear regression models, we estimated depression patterns by living arrangement across age- and gender groups. Our findings from the mixed-effects model revealed that over a 14-year follow-up period, there were significant decreasing patterns of depression were among middle-aged men and women, and older men living alone compared to living with a spouse and living with others. However, living alone still had the highest depression compared to other living arrangement types. On the other hand, the depression of older women living alone changed to a level similar to those living with others during the follow-up period. In conclusion, these findings indicate that living alone significantly increases the risk of depression, but the risk decreases over time. Additionally, depression patterns by living arrangement proved to differ across age and gender groups.

Abstract
Major depressive disorders are ranked as the single largest contributor to non-fatal health loss and biomarkers could largely improve our routine clinical activity by predicting disease course and guiding treatment. However there is still a dearth of valid biomarkers in the field of psychiatry. The initial assumption that a single biomarker can capture the myriad of complex processes proved to be naive. The purpose of this paper is to critically review the field and to illustrate the possible practical application for routine clinical care. Biomarkers derived from DNA analysis are the ones that have received the most attention. Other potential candidates include circulating transcription products, proteins, and inflammatory markers. DNA polygenic risk scores proved to be useful in other fields of medicine and preliminary results suggest that they could be useful both as risk and diagnostic biomarkers also in depression and for the choice of treatment. A number of other possible fluid biomarkers are currently under investigation for diagnosis, outcome prediction, staging, and stratification of interventions, however research is still needed before they can be used for routine clinical care. When available, clinicians may be able to receive a lab report with detailed information about disease risk, outcome prediction, and specific indications about preferred treatments.

Abstract
PURPOSE There are great demands for identifying biomarkers of major depressive disorder (MDD), a common mental illness with a prevalence of approximately 6%. Finding potential biomarkers to aid MDD diagnosis is in high demand. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN In this study, a combination of pretreatment methods named salt-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) and nontargeted peptidomics based on nano-LC-Orbitrap/MS was primarily employed to discover the candidate peptide markers from the plasma of 238 subjects. RESULTS Many peptides were enriched and identified from the plasma, 42 of which showed significant differences between MDD patients and controls by univariate statistical analysis. A binary logistic regression (BLR) model combined four peptide markers (P1, P9, P17, P29) was established, yielding an overall prediction accuracy of 91.7% and 82.2% in the discovery and validation sets, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In conclusion, the excellent performance of the BLR model in both discovery and validation sets demonstrates the robustness of the four peptide markers panel. It is very valuable for quantification of the absolute content of four peptides and further verification.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the blood plasma levels of Fetuin-A protein in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and healthy controls that could offer novel diagnostic biomarkers of disease development in ASD. Another objective was to investigate the severity of autistic children by Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) and Short Sensory Profile (SSP). Methods This case control study was carried out at Autism Research and Treatment (ART) Center, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from October 2019 to February 2020. Plasma concentration of Fetuin-A was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in ASD subjects (n=46) and normal controls (n=44). Correlation among Fetuin-A levels, CARS and SSP was established by Spearman's correlation coefficient (r). Results Overall, autistic children had significantly (p= 0.0.02) lower Fetuin-A concentration [50.76 (22.2-68.5) ng/ml] than those of healthy controls [53.7 (35.6-99.7) ng/ml] [median (interquartile range)]. Children with mild to moderate autism (n=24, 52%) also showed significantly lower Fetuin-A levels [50.0 (30.0-68.2) ng/ml], (p =0.02} than healthy controls [53.7 (35.6-99.7) ng/ml] [median (IQR)]. However, there was no significant change (p = 0.71) observed between the Fetuin-A levels of children with severe autism [51.8 (22.2-68.5)] ng/ml, mild to moderate autism [50 (30-68.2)] ng/ml [median (IQR)] and healthy controls (p=0.12). Also no significant correlations between Fetuin-A, CARS and SSP were observed (CARS, r= 0.024, p=0.88; SSP, r= -0.003, p=0.98). Conclusion Overall the low Fetuin-A plasma values in ASD subjects, most likely show that Fetuin-A could be associated in the physiology of autism. Further studies with larger patient and control cohorts will be necessary to determine whether Fetuin-A can be used as a biomarker for ASD.
