Impact assessment of ionizing radiation on human and non-human biota from the vicinity of a near-surface radioactive waste repository

How dynamic transfer models can complement an equilibrium-based approach: Case studies of radiocesium transfer to forest trees following accidental atmospheric release

Accidental release of radionuclides caused by nuclear accidents like those in Fukushima and Chernobyl can result in pulses of radioactivity entering the forest environment. Due to intense recycling in the forest, equilibrium between radioactivity concentrations in trees and in soil may not be reached during the period of severe short-term radionuclide transport following the accident. Another question arises as to whether the equilibrium hypothesis using empirical concentration ratios (CRs) can be applied to the long-term period. Using two atmospheric ¹³⁷Cs fallout scenarios in the Fukushima and Chernobyl sites, this study investigated whether the CR approach could provide conservative predictions of ¹³⁷Cs levels in trees following ¹³⁷Cs fallout events by comparing predictions from the CR approach using data gathered for trees by the IAEA to those from dynamic transfer models and actual measured data. The inter-comparisons also aimed to investigate whether the CR approach could account for the variability of ¹³⁷Cs levels across different tree organs. The results showed that caution may be necessary when using the CR approach, which relies on the IAEA dataset, to estimate ¹³⁷Cs accumulation in forest trees in the short - and long term following atmospheric ¹³⁷Cs fallout events. A calculation by TRIPS 2.0 demonstrated the importance of considering the distribution within tree organs for in-depth analysis of radiological impact of forest trees. Our findings suggest that it may be preferable to use CR values based on site-specific data rather than generic data collected from various sites. This is particularly relevant when studying the sites where the bioavailability of ¹³⁷Cs for trees and thus possible exposures are higher. This study also showed that dynamic modeling approaches could offer an alternative means of estimating CR values of the entire tree or specific tree organs in situations where empirically derived values are not available.

Environmental risks of radioactive discharges from a low-level radioactive waste disposal site at Dessel, Belgium

The potential radiological impact of releases from a low-level radioactive waste (Category A waste) repository in Dessel, Belgium on the local fauna and flora was assessed under a reference scenario for gradual leaching. The potential impact situations for terrestrial and aquatic fauna and flora considered in this study were soil contamination due to irrigation with contaminated groundwater from a well at 70 m from the repository, contamination of the local wetlands receiving the highest radionuclide flux after migration through the aquifer and contamination of the local river receiving the highest radionuclide flux after migration through the aquifer. In addition, an exploratory study was carried out for biota residing in the groundwater. All impact assessments were performed using the Environmental Risk from Ionising Contaminants: Assessment and Management (ERICA) tool. For all scenarios considered, absorbed dose rates to biota were found to be well below the ERICA 10 μGy h^-1 screening value. The highest dose rates were observed for the scenario where soil was irrigated with groundwater from the vicinity of the repository. For biota residing in the groundwater well, a few dose rates were slightly above the screening level but significantly below the dose rates at which the smallest effects are observed for those relevant species or groups of species. Given the conservative nature of the assessment, it can be concluded that manmade radionuclides deposited into the environment by the near surface disposal of category A waste at Dessel do not have a significant radiological impact to wildlife.

A new version of the ERICA tool to facilitate impact assessments of radioactivity on wild plants and animals

A new version of the ERICA Tool (version 1.2) was released in November 2014; this constitutes the first major update of the Tool since release in 2007. The key features of the update are presented in this article. Of particular note are new transfer databases extracted from an international compilation of concentration ratios (CRwo-media) and the modification of 'extrapolation' approaches used to select transfer data in cases where information is not available. Bayesian updating approaches have been used in some cases to draw on relevant information that would otherwise have been excluded in the process of deriving CRwo-media statistics. All of these efforts have in turn led to the requirement to update Environmental Media Concentration Limits (EMCLs) used in Tier 1 assessments. Some of the significant changes with regard to EMCLs are highlighted.

Charophyte electrogenesis as a biomarker for assessing the risk from low-dose ionizing radiation to a single plant cell

The impact of low-dose ionizing radiation on the electrical signalling pattern and membrane properties of the characea Nitellopsis obtusa was examined using conventional glass-microelectrode and voltage-clamp techniques. The giant cell was exposed to a ubiquitous radionuclide of high biological importance - tritium - for low-dose irradiation. Tritium was applied as tritiated water with an activity concentration of 15 kBq L(-1) (an external dose rate that is approximately 0.05 μGy h(-1) above the background radiation level); experiments indicated that this was the lowest effective concentration. Investigating the dynamics of electrical excitation of the plasma membrane (action potential) showed that exposing Characeae to tritium for half an hour prolonged the repolarization phase of the action potential by approximately 35%: the repolarization rate decreased from 39.2 ± 3.1 mV s(-1) to 25.5 ± 1,8 mV s(-1) due to tritium. Voltage-clamp measurements showed that the tritium exposure decreased the Cl(-) efflux and Ca(2+) influx involved in generating an action potential by approximately 27% (Δ = 12.4 ± 1.1 μA cm(-2)) and 64% (Δ = -5.3 ± 0.4 μA cm(-2)), respectively. The measured alterations in the action potential dynamics and in the chloride and calcium ion transport due to the exogenous low-dose tritium exposure provide the basis for predicting possible further impairments of plasma membrane regulatory functions, which subsequently disturb essential physiological processes of the plant cell.
