Abstract
Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of forensic age estimation in a German population by combining clavicle and wisdom teeth assessments based on cone beam computed tomography (CT) data. The study aimed to determine the reliability of this approach in predicting biological age. Material and Methods: A total of 161 CT data sets from 120 males and 41 females with known exact ages were evaluated by three raters. The clavicle was assessed according to stages 1-5 (including substages 2a-c and 3a-c), and the Demirjian stage's classification method was used for the wisdom teeth. Inter-class correlation (ICC) was calculated to assess the agreement among the three raters. Additionally, ordinary least square regressions were performed to predict chronological age using the clavicle or one of the four teeth. Finally, age prediction models using multiple indicators were developed. Results: The ICCs ranged from 0.82 for the clavicle to 0.86 and 0.88 for the wisdom teeth. Linear estimation tended to overestimate chronological age, especially in subjects over 18 years old. The clavicle showed the strongest overestimation. Combining age estimation from the clavicle with the upper and lower wisdom teeth improved the predictive power, resulting in a 14% and 15% increase in R² for the upper and lower wisdom teeth, respectively. Adding more than one tooth to the prediction did not improve the predictive power (all ΔR² < 1%). Conclusions: Age estimation using CT can be significantly improved by combining information from the analysis of wisdom teeth with age estimation based on the clavicle.

Abstract
Evaluation of third molar eruption represents an established method for age assessment of living individuals. Different classification systems are available for the radiological assessment of third molar eruption. The aim of this study was to identify the most accurate and reliable classification system for the mandibular third molar eruption on orthopantomograms (OPG). We compared the method of Olze et al. (2012) with the method of Willmot et al. (2018) and a newly derived classification system using OPGs from 211 individuals aged 15-25 years. The assessments were performed by three experienced examiners. One examiner evaluated all radiographs twice. The correlation between age and stage was investigated and the inter- and intra-rater reliability was estimated for all three methods. Correlation between stage and age was similar between classification systems, although higher in the data from males (Spearman's rho ranging from 0.568 to 0.583) than from females (0.440 to 0.446). Inter- and intra-rater reliability measures were similar across methods and invariant on sex, with overlapping confidence intervals, although the highest point estimates for both intra- and inter-rater reliability were for the method by Olze et al. with Krippendorf's alpha values of 0.904 (95% confidence interval 0.854, 0.954) and 0.797 (95% confidence interval 0.744, 0.850). It was concluded that the method of Olze et al. from 2012 is a reliable method for practical application and future studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a notable increase of migratory movements into Europe with the arrival of not (reliably) documented young individuals within EU-Member States. Accordingly, the need for forensic age assessments likewise increased in order to administratively differentiate along the legally relevant cut-off age of 18 completed years. The objective of our study was to analyse the expert reports of forensic age estimation issued in Barcelona between 2011 and 2018. METHOD In all cases, data on the medical history, physical examination, radiology of the left hand and orthopantomography were collected. In cases without third molars and a complete ossification of the hand, a CT scan of the clavicles was also performed. RESULTS A total of 2754 expert reports were evaluated; 96.7% were males, the majority were of North African origin, mainly from Morocco (63.6%), and 19.6% were sub-Saharan Africans; 65.4% had a level of bone maturation corresponding to the last three standards of Greulich and Pyle. Most cases had mineralization of the third molar corresponding to the F, G or H stages of Demirjian. In 85.9%, there was a correspondence between bone and dental age. A total of 28.8% of the subjects were evaluated as being aged over 18 years; 86.2% of North Africans were considered to be younger than 18, and 82% of sub-Saharan Africans were considered to be over 18 years old. CONCLUSIONS In Barcelona, most of the subjects evaluated were male and North African, and 71.2% of the cases were considered to be minors.

Abstract
Objectives Dental age determination relies on the presence of wisdom teeth, which can be assigned to specific age ranges according to their stage of development. The purpose of this study is to highlight the applicability of the Demirjian staging of layman compared to expert, as well as the inclusion of all four wisdom teeth in the overall assessment, in order to emphasize and critically highlight a precise age estimation in clinical practice, especially in the case of agenesis or the presence of less than all four wisdom teeth. Material and Methods: In this study, dental age determination is performed and compared by a trained layperson and an expert using 385 orthopantomograms. The radiographs of known chronological age from male patients in the age range of 11−22 years were acquired from the University Medical Center Mainz. All four wisdom teeth were radiologically viewed if present. Demirjian staging with stages A−H was applied, and regression analysis was performed. Results: The relationship between mineralization of wisdom teeth (18, 28, 38 and 48) and age was linear for all teeth (p < 0.01), except for tooth 18 (p = 0.02). Comparing the prediction of the four teeth individually revealed that the lower teeth gave better predictions than the upper ones (R2 ≥ 0.50 vs. R2 < 0.50). Conclusions: For clinical use, the mandibular wisdom teeth should be preferred when performing dental age estimation using the Demirjian staging method. As a result of the present analysis, two ways of determining dental age by wisdom teeth can be suggested. One is to take only tooth 38, with the formula: age = 3.3 + 0.73 × mineralization of tooth_38. The second recommendation would be to take tooth_48. If both are unavailable, the formula would be age = −0.5 + 0.94 × mineralization tooth_28. Utilizing tooth 18 would not lead to more precise results.

Abstract
It has been argued that the impaction of the third molars could result in delayed maturation, which, in turn, could affect age estimations in criminal proceedings. In view of this, the present study was undertaken to determine whether the impaction status could delay the chronological process of third molar mineralization in a sample of south Indian children and young adults. The orthopantomograms (OPGs) of 915 children and young adults of south Indian origin aged between 15 and 22 years were evaluated. Mineralisation stage and impaction status were determined for all lower third molars. Descriptive statistics were performed at stages D to H of Demirjian staging system. The results of independent t-test show that the impaction resulted in statistically significant slower mineralization in impacted lower third molars at stages D to F in both sexes. It was ascertained that the mean ages with the impacted lower third molars at stage G were 0.98-1.38 years higher in males and 0.50-0.80 years higher in females than those with non-impacted lower third molars. For stage H, the mean ages were 0.14-0.21 years higher in males and 0.25-0.44 years higher in females. The probabilities of being 18 years and above is higher for non-impacted lower third molars at stages G and H than those with impacted ones. It is concluded that the impaction could result in delayed maturation in the lower third molars of the studied sample. Further studies are warranted in a more diverse sample.

Age Estimation Based on Pulp–Tooth Volume Ratio of Anterior Teeth in Cone-Beam Computed Tomographic Images in a Selected Population: A Cross-Sectional Study. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2021. Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the correlation between chronological age and pulp–tooth volume ratio in anterior teeth using cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images and provide equations for age estimation based on pulp–tooth volume ratio. In this cross-sectional study, CBCT images of 312 anterior teeth of the maxilla and mandible were examineαd. The chronological age and the sex of the patients were recorded. Tooth volume and pulp volume of the anterior teeth were measured using Mimics software, and then tooth–pulp volume ratio was calculated. Statistical analysis of data was performed using chi-square test, independent T-test, Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression (α = 0.05). Finally, equations were made based on the results of the regression analysis for age estimation in general and for males and females. The age of the subjects ranged between 16 and 69 years (mean 40.6 ± 12.74). The pulp–tooth volume ratio of the maxillary teeth was generally higher than the mandibular teeth. A significant inverse relationship between age and pulp–tooth volume ratio was observed for all anterior teeth. (p < 0.05). The strongest correlation between age and pulp–tooth volume ratio was reported for mandibular central incisor (r = −0.58, p < 0.001) and the weakest was for mandibular lateral incisor (r = −0.36, p = 0.012). Age estimation was most accurate among females using the maxillary central incisors (p < 0.001) and among males using the mandibular central incisors and maxillary canines (p = 0.003). Pulp–tooth volume ratio of mandibular central incisors, maxillary lateral incisors, and maxillary canines in males and maxillary and mandibular central incisors, maxillary lateral incisors, and maxillary and mandibular canines in females can be used for age estimation.

Abstract
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to test the accuracy of the third molar maturity index (I 3M) cut-off value (0.08) to distinguish between individuals above and below the adult age of legal responsibility (18 years) in a Russian population. A sample of 571 digital panoramic radiographs of healthy Russian minors and young adults (363 females and 208 males), aged between 14 and 24 years, was evaluated. The lower left third molars were analyzed by applying the cut-off value of 0.08 determined by Cameriere et al. (2008). Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (ρ c) and Cohen's kappa coefficient (κ) showed that repeatability and reproducibility are high for both intra- and interobserver errors. The I 3M value decreased with age in both sexes. Age distribution gradually decreases as I 3M increases in both girls and boys. In the male group, molar maturity stages 0-0.04, 0.04-0.08, 0.08-0.3, 0.3-0.5, and 0.9-1.4 were reached slightly earlier than in the female group. The results demonstrated that sensitivity is 0.96 in boys and 0.93 in girls; associated specificity values were both 0.98. The cut-off value of I 3M is statistically robust and thus valid for forensic application in a Russian population to determine whether or not a subject has reached 18 years of age. Finally, we compared our results with those of other studies in which the same I 3M cut-off value was tested on different populations. The method is novel as it is reliable and easily reproducible, thus ensuring a universal way of comparing the results obtained (based on a cut-off value) among many populations, in order to develop an ever-increasing database.

Abstract
Objectives To assess epiphyseal growth plate closure of the knee for forensic age estimation using an ultrasound (US)-based method and to compare the findings with MRI. Methods Thirty-three healthy male individuals (age, 14.4–19.3 years) were prospectively evaluated for epiphyseal growth plate closure of the right knee by recordings of two-dimensional US volumes and a high-resolution T1-weighted MRI sequence. The degree of epiphyseal growth plate closure was rated independently by two readers for each method using a modality specific three-point scale that differentiates between an open physis (S1), a partially closed physis (S2), and a closed physis (S3). Results The inter-rater agreement was high for the US (Cohen’s kappa (CK): femur 95.2%, tibia 81.3%, fibula 86.3%) and the MRI method (CK: femur 70.2%, tibia 90.8%, fibula 79.8%). The degree of growth plate closure associated positively with advancing age. The US system showed a clearer separation of median ages with lower overlap than the MRI system. Open growth plates on minors (< S3 on femur and tibia) were identified by US with higher sensitivity (1.0 vs. 0.7) and slightly lower specificity (0.7 vs. 0.85) compared with MRI. The examination time was substantially shorter on US than on MRI (2.65 ± 0.91 min vs. 24.72 ± 2.72 min; p < 0.001). Conclusions The US method for evaluation of growth plate closure of the knee can reliably assign male individuals to different ossification stages and identifies minors with high accuracy. More studies with larger numbers are needed to further evaluate this method. Key Points • US is feasible to determine the degree of epiphyseal growth plate closure of the knee, shows a high degree of reliability, and is comparable to MRI. • US of the knee can detect open growth plates on male minors with high accuracy. • US of the knee may be used as a fast, non-invasive imaging tool for forensic age estimation to identify male minors. The relevance of body mass index in forensic age assessment of living individuals: an age-adjusted linear regression analysis using multivariable fractional polynomials. Abstract
In forensic age assessment of living individuals, developmental stages of skeletal maturation and tooth mineralization are examined and compared with a reference population. It is of interest which factors can affect the development of these features. We investigated the effect of body mass index (BMI) on the developmental stages of the medial epiphysis of the clavicle, the distal epiphysis of the radius, the distal epiphysis of the femur, the proximal epiphysis of the tibia, and the left lower third molar in a total of 581 volunteers, 294 females and 287 males aged 12–24 years, using 3 T MRI. BMI values in the cohort ranged from 13.71 kg/m2 in a 12-year-old female to 35.15 kg/m2 in an 18-year-old female. The effect of BMI on the development of the characteristics was investigated using linear regression models with multivariable fractional polynomials. In the univariable analysis, BMI was associated with all feature systems (beta between 0.10 and 0.44; p < 0.001). When accounting for the physiological increase of BMI with increasing age, the effect of BMI was lower and in the majority of the models no longer clinically relevant. Betas decreased to values between 0.00 and 0.05. When adding feature variables to a model already including age, r2 values increased only minimally. For an overall bone ossification score combining all characteristics, the adjusted ß was 0.11 (p = 0.021) and 0.08 (p = 0.23) for females and males, respectively. Low ß and r2 values (0.00 (adjusted)–0.16 (crude)) were present in both models for third molar development already in the unadjusted analyses. In conclusion, our study found no to little effect of BMI on osseous development in young adults. Teeth development in both sexes was completely independent of BMI. Therefore, dental methods should be part of every age assessment.

Abstract
The main criterion of dental age assessment in living adolescents and young adults is the evaluation of third molars' mineralization. Concerning forensic age assessment after the completion of third molars' mineralization, apposition of secondary dentine and narrowing of the periodontal membrane as seen as decreasing radiolucent areas in the radiographs for mandibular third molars have already been described as regressive features. The present study examines the combination of both these features for the purpose of age assessment in regression analyses after rescaling the data to make it on the interval scale. To this end, a total of 1245 orthopantomograms was evaluated, taken from 606 females and 639 males in the age group of 15-40 years. The apposition of secondary dentine and narrowing of the periodontal membrane as seen as decreasing radiolucent areas in the radiographs were determined for the lower third molars. The correlation of the features with the chronological age was assessed by means of rescaled regression analyses. Furthermore, regression formulas for age assessment were established. The values of the standard error of estimate ranged between 3.55 and 4.52 years. In general, the rescaled regression of the examined features appears to be suited for forensic age assessment. A limitation of the present study is the comparatively low number of evaluable teeth in the examined age group. Due to an incomplete development or a lack of the mandibular third molars, only a mere half of the respective teeth could be included in the statistical analysis.

Abstract
Age estimation is an actual topic in the area of forensic medicine with a special focus on the age limits of 16 and 18 years. Current research on this topic relies on retrospective data of inhomogeneous populations relating to sex, age range, and socioeconomic status. In this work, we present a 2-year follow-up study for the evaluation of an age estimation method on a prospective magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) knee data collective of a homogeneous population. The study includes 40 male subjects from northern Germany aged 14 to 21 years. Three MRI examinations were evenly acquired within 2 years for each subject. As a first evaluation, a three-stage system was used to assess the ossification status of the knee (I:"open", II:"partially ossified", III:"fully ossified"). Three raters assessed the growth plate of the distal femur, proximal tibia, and proximal fibula based on central 2D slices. A good inter-rater agreement was attained (κ = 0.84). All subjects younger than 18 years were rated as stage I and had a cumulative knee score (SKJ) ≤ 5. Based on the follow-up datasets, new parameters quantifying the intra-individual ossification process were calculated. The results of this follow-up analysis show a different start, end, and speed of each growth plate's maturation as well as an ossification peak for individuals at the age of 16. The generated MRI database provides new insights into the ossification process over time and serves as a basis for further evaluations of age estimation methods.
