Abstract
INTRODUCTION The lateral medicine ball throw (LMBT) test is used to evaluate the throwing action, involving the entire kinetic chain and the principle of force transfer, with association between the strength of the lower limb and trunk muscles and the lower limb kinematics. The LMBT to investigate the association between lower limb kinematics and hip and trunk muscle strength. EXPERIMENTAL This was a cross-sectional study with 84 healthy and physically active young people. Determinations were made of the maximum isometric strengths of the hip abductor, lateral rotator, extensor, and flexor muscles, and the trunk lateral flexors and extensors. Kinematic analyses (2D) of the hip, knee, and ankle in the sagittal and frontal planes were performed during the countermovement phase of the LMBT, together with quantification of LMBT. Statistical analysis of the associations employed multiple linear regression, with α = 5%. RESULTS There were significant associations between the LMBT and the independent variables hip extensors strength, trunk flexors strength, valgus angle, and knee flexion angle and gender. The regression model presented adjusted R2 = 0.622. CONCLUSIONS LMBT was influenced by the trunk flexor and hip extensor muscle strengths, knee flexion kinematics, lower limb valgus in the countermovement phase, and gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The strength of the trunk musculature plays an essential role in performance. The aims of this study were to analyze the relationship between the strength of the trunk rotation muscles with rotational medicine ball throwing velocity and distance, to study differences between sex in rotational medicine ball throwing and to compare the asymmetries of trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing. METHODS Thirty physically active college students participated on the study. Horizontal and low cable woodchop exercises were assessed with a functional electromechanical dynamometer and throwing was measured with a radar and a measuring tape. A Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for the relation between trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing. Independent samples t-test was performed to determine the differences between sex in rotational medicine ball throwing and a paired samples t-test was performed to study the asymmetries. RESULTS Large and very large correlations were obtained between trunk rotational strength and rotational medicine ball throwing (r=0.68-0.79). Significant differences and a large effect size were found between males and females for all throwing velocity and throwing distance variables (P<0.05; ES>0.90) and asymmetries in performance of mean velocity throwing (P=0.003; ES=-0.60) and peak velocity throwing (P=0.025; ES=-0.43). No significant differences were found between dominant and non-dominant side in any of the trunk rotator strength assessment conditions (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS There is a large or very large correlation between the STRM and the RMBT in all its modalities. Differences in strength were found between sexes, with no significant differences between dominant and non-dominant sides.

J Strength Cond Res 38(1): 136-145, 2024-The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of bat swing (BS) and rotational medicine ball throw (RMBT) load-velocity profiling (LVP) methods and explore relationships with batting performance in NCAA Division I softball players. Bat velocity was tracked with a swing sensor during the BS method, whereas an inertial measurement unit (IMU) tracked forearm velocity during the BS and RMBT methods. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were used for relative reliability, and coefficient of variation (CV) was used for absolute reliability. With the exception of theoretical maximum velocity (V0) using the average of top 2 peak velocities (PVavg) during the RMBT, no LVP variables were found to be reliable during the RMBT or BS method using the IMU (ICC ≤0.7; CV ≥15%). For the BS method with the swing sensor, all bat loads and V0 had acceptable reliability using peak velocity (PV) and PVavg (ICC >0.7; CV <15%), whereas all LVP variables were highly related between the multiple-load and two-load models when using PV and PVavg (r = 0.915-0.988; p < 0.01). There were significant relationships (r = 0.603-0.671; p < 0.05) between PV using the 0.99 Kg bat load and V0, and several in-game batting statistics. Practitioners may use the BS with the swing sensor as a rotational LVP assessment, although they should be cautious of aiming to improve batting performance in collegiate softball players based on the correlations reported until further research is performed.

J Strength Cond Res 35(12): 3425-3431, 2021-In most rotational power assessments, discrete variables are used for subsequent examination; however, movements are continuous, and data can be collected in time series. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the velocity- and power-time series characteristics of a standing rotation test and identify relationships with golf performance. Thirty-one golfers performed a golf-specific rotation test (GSRT) with 3 different resistances (6, 10, and 14 kg) in a robotic engine system. Time series of velocity and power was calculated from the raw data, and each repetition was then normalized to 0-100%. Principal component analyses (PCAs) were performed on velocity and power waveforms. The PCA used an eigenvalue analysis of the data covariance matrix. The relationship between clubhead speed (CHS) and all principal components (PC) was examined using linear regression. Ten velocity parameters and 6 power parameters explained 80% of the variance in the data. For velocity, the first 2 PCs identified both magnitude and phase shift features while PCs 3-5 identified difference features. For power, the first 2 PCs identified both magnitude and phase shift features, the third PC identified a phase shift feature, and the fourth PC identified a difference feature. The highest relationship with CHS was shown for GSRT with 14 kg in PC2 for power (R2 = 0.48, p < 0.001). The PCA of the GSRT power test could distinguish intraindividual differences, external loads, and sex-based differences. Athletes should focus on accelerating smoothly through the movement, particularly with heavier loads, and not pulling aggressively at the beginning of the rotational movement to achieve maximum power.

J Strength Cond Res 35(12): 3414-3419, 2021-Previous studies have evaluated relationships between baseball batting or pitching and whole-body power tests such as rotational medicine ball throw velocity (RMBTV) (transverse plane), lateral-to-medial hop for distance (frontal plane), and two-legged standing broad jump for distance (sagittal plane). However, no previous report has evaluated all 3 whole-body power tests in the same study to determine their relationship to bat swing velocity or pitching velocity. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine correlational relationship strength between bat swing velocity, batted baseball velocity, and throwing velocity with 2-legged standing broad jump for distance, lateral-to-medial jump for distance, and RMBTV whole-body power tests in collegiate baseball players. Thirty-five NCAA Division III players (15 pitchers and 23 hitters; 3 players played pitcher and other positions) participated in this study. An alpha value of p < 0.05 was selected to indicate statistical significance. Moderate relationships were observed between bat swing velocity and RMBTV (r = 0.65, p = 0.003), explaining 39% of the variance, and between pitching velocity and RMBTV (r = 0.62, p = 0.02), explaining 38% of the variance. A moderate correlation was also observed between batted baseball velocity and RMBTV (r = 0.53, p = 0.02), explaining 28% of the variance. Only the RMBTV whole-body power test displayed significant relationships with bat swing velocity, batted baseball velocity, and pitching velocity. Significant relationships were not identified for either the two-legged standing broad jump for distance or the lateral-to-medial jump for distance whole-body power tests and bat swing velocity or pitching velocity. Further studies should evaluate whether the coordination developed during RMBTV movements can decrease baseball shoulder and elbow injuries associated with repetitive, poorly timed, sequential lower extremity-trunk-upper extremity whole-body movements.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Performance tests of the upper limb have been frequently used in the evaluation of individuals to identify risk of injury and to determine improvement in physical performance. Understanding the variables related to the performance of the tests is important for better applicability and interpretation of test results. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investige the correlation between isometric strength of scapular, shoulder and spine muscles with physical performance test of upper limb in men and women. EXPERIMENTAL Forty-nine healthy and physically conditioned individuals, men (n = 24) (22,7 ± 3,2 years; 74,6 ± 8,1 Kg; 176,7 ± 7,1 cm) women (n = 25) (23 ± 2,7 years; 61,5 ± 9,1 Kg; 163,2 ± 5,6 cm), were evaluated for shoulder abductor isometric strength (S-ABD); Middle (MT) and lower (LT) trapezium; lateral shoulder rotators (S-LR); flexors (T-FLEX), lateral incliners (T-INCL), and trunk extenders (T-EXT). Evaluation of upper limb physical performance was carried out by Upper Quarter Y Balance test (YBT-UQ) and Chain upper extremity stability test (CKC-UEST). Pearson's test (r values) p ≤ 0.05 was used to analyze the correlation. RESULTS The results reveal strong correlations between S-ABD and CKC-UEST in male group; and strong correlations in female group between S-ABD strength with CKC-UEST; and S-LR with all YBT-UQ directions and score and between T-EXT strength with CKC-UEST. CONCLUSION Therefore, strength of shoulder and spine stabilizers influences performance in upper limb tests, but with different correlations as to sex. To improve test performance, it may be important to increase the strength of the shoulder and spine muscles.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the fitness characteristics and to identify the influence of gender and practice experience between young amateur padel players. A total of thirty-four padel players (n = 19 boys and 15 girls) aged 13 to 17 years old (age 14.6 ± 1.5 years; body mass 63.4 ± 14.5 kg; height 166.6 ± 9.8 cm; 6.2 ± 2.5 padel experience) volunteered to participate. Body composition was assessed by bioimpedance. Change of direction and agility were evaluated by two padel-adapted tests. Upper-limb strength measurement included overhead and side medicine ball throws with dominant and non-dominant hands. One-way ANCOVA was used to determine whether there were significant differences between gender and experience on fitness variables adjusting for age as a covariate. Male and female young padel players presented an apparently healthy body composition and exhibited similar performance in all fitness tests except for jumping ability. Practice experience seemed to influence upper-limb throwing strength, however, sub-analyses revealed no conclusive results. These results contribute to the existing knowledge in padel by providing new data about the fitness status of amateur young players aged 13 to 17 years old and open a window for future interventions using padel as a health promotion tool among youths.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the physical factors related to serve speed in male professional wheelchair tennis players (WT). Nine best nationally-ranked Spanish male wheelchair tennis players (38.35 ± 11.28 years, 63.77 ± 7.01 kg) completed a neuromuscular test battery consisting of: isometric handgrip strength; serve velocity; 5, 10 and 20 m sprint (with and without racket); agility (with and without racket); medicine ball throw (serve, forehand and backhand movements); and an incremental endurance test specific to WT. Significantly higher correlations were observed in serve (r = 0.921), forehand (r = 0.810) and backhand (r = 0.791) medicine ball throws showing a positive correlation with serve velocity. A regression analysis identified a single model with the medicine ball throw serve as the main predictor of serve velocity (r2 = 0.847, p < 0.001). In conclusion, it is recommended that coaches and physical trainers include medicine ball throw workouts in the training programs of WT tennis players due to the transfer benefits to the serve speed.

Abstract
CONTEXT Neuromuscular adaptations following exercise training are believed to enhance sports performance. While abundant research is available on adaptations of the lower body to plyometric training, little is known about adaptations of the upper body to plyometric training. OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of plyometric training on neuromuscular adaptations in cricket players of different age groups. DESIGN Randomized parallel group active-controlled trial. SETTING Research laboratory, school cricket ground, and sports complex field. PARTICIPANTS Fifty-nine cricket players were randomly assigned to either the experimental group or the control group. INTERVENTIONS The experimental group was subjected to 8 weeks of medicine ball plyometric training held thrice per week. Neuromuscular adaptations were analyzed pretraining and posttraining in 3 age groups: <18, 18-25, and >25 years. Analysis of variance was used to ascertain the training effects between and within the 6 subgroups, that is, age group <18 years (control and experimental), age group 18-25 years (control and experimental), and age group >25 years (control and experimental). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Muscle activation, upper body balance, upper body power, and muscle strength. RESULTS Out of 59, 55 participants completed the study. Subjects aged <18 years (adolescents) showed significantly greater improvements than those from the groups 18-25 years and >25 years (adults) on upper body balance and upper body power. Significant improvements were observed in the experimental subjects of all age groups on their muscle activity of biceps brachii, upper body balance, and upper body power following medicine ball plyometric training. CONCLUSIONS Though adolescent subjects were found to be more adaptive than adult subjects, experimental subjects showed significantly greater neuromuscular adaptations to medicine ball plyometric training than controls. These findings emphasize the need for coaches and athletic trainers to inculcate medicine ball plyometric exercises in training regimes of cricket players so as to improve their upper body performance.

Abstract
When new protocols are developed, there is a requirement to investigate test-retest reliability of measures for valid use and interpretation of data in research and practice. Therefore, the aim of this investigation was to determine the inter-day reliability of the cable put and seated rotation assessment protocols. On three occasions, nine resistance-trained men performed cable puts and cable rotations at different loads between 6 and 42 kg on a commercially available cable cross over machine. Load stack movement was recorded using a PT5A linear position transducer from which all kinematic and kinetic variables were calculated. Reliability was excellent for peak velocity and displacement based on intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and coefficient of variation (CV) across the majority of loads and movements (cable put: ICC = 0.92 to 0.99, CV = 3.1% to 8.6%; cable seated rotation: ICC = 0.76 to 0.99, CV = -1.7% to 16.1%). However, kinetic variables demonstrated inadequate reliability across the majority of days, loads and movements (ICC = 0.70, CV >10%). It was concluded that peak velocity is a reliable kinematic measure to assess muscular capability from cable put and seated rotation protocols; however, kinetic measures are too variable to provide reliable outputs across testing occasions.

Abstract
High levels of physical fitness (PF) can positively affect both health and cognitive function, thus monitoring its levels in youth can help increase health and quality of life in adult populations later on. This systematic review aims to identify PF field-based tests used in young European populations practicing sport to find tools that are adequate for the considered target involving a new battery within the Enriched Sport Activities (ESA) project. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement was followed. In the 83 identified articles, the main tests used were: vertical/horizontal jumps (for muscular strength/power); push-ups, running at maximum effort, sit-ups (for muscular strength/endurance); multistage non-intermittent and intermittent tests (for aerobic endurance); sit and reach (for flexibility); sprinting and agility T-tests (for speed and agility, respectively); 10 × 5 m shuttle run (SR) (for both speed and agility). Few studies assessed coordination, reaction time, power, and balance. Although the selected tests are widely used and validated, they do not determine all PF aspects and do not reflect sport-specific features. A final decision was made for the inclusion of the following tests: standing broad jump, seated medicine ball throw, 20 m SR test, 30 m sprint, Illinois test, and a new test, i.e., the crunning test, to assess different skill-related components at once. The use of this combination of tests allows for the assessment of all PF components and can help planning effective training programs and cultivate sporting talent.

Abstract
The cable-pulley downswing is a movement similar to the golf downswing, and therefore may offer a valuable golf specific rotational diagnostic and training tool. However, to be of value, measurements need to be stable across testing occasions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the test-retest reliability of the cable downswing across a spectrum of load-velocities. Ten male participants (21.7 ± 3.0 years, 84.6 ± 9.8 kg, 1.80 ± 0.05 m) volunteered to participate over 3 testing sessions' separated by a minimum of 3 days. Participants performed maximal velocity cable downswings across eight loads (1.25-18.75 kg), which were incrementally increased by 2.5 kg. Vertical cable stack velocity was collected at 50 Hz via a GymAware linear position transducer. Downswing velocity across all eight loads was observed to be extremely reliable (change in mean = -5.1% to 2.9%, coefficient of variation = 1.5-6.4% and intra-class correlation = 0.70-0.98), with reliability increasing with increasing trials. In conclusion, the cable downswing is a reliable method of tracking rotational ability similar to the golf downswing. Practitioners should establish an upper load relative to the apparatus and participant. Future research should determine the utility and sensitivity of this measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical preparation is becoming more important in amateur tennis player training programs. Yet, when studying stroke performance in these players, there is a lack of evidence on the role of functional power generating capacity. The aim of the study was therefore to determine whether functional power generating capacity correlates with speed and accuracy of forehand and backhand groundstrokes in amateur players. We also studied the correlation with handgrip strength as a more classical measurement of general muscle strength. METHODS A total of 21 male amateur players, aged 33.7±4.6 with 17.1±6.7 years of play, were tested. They performed a medicine ball side throw test, a handgrip dynamometer test, and a stroke performance test. RESULTS Distance of the medicine ball throw on the dominant side positively correlated to the speed of the fastest forehand (r=0.52; P=0.017) and backhand accuracy (r=0.49; P=0.024). There was also a correlation between the handgrip strength on the dominant side and the speed of the fastest forehand (r=0.52, P=0.019). CONCLUSIONS We concluded that groundstroke performance in amateur tennis players depends on functional power generating capacity, but that it is not the principal contributing factor.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: São poucas as informações que relacionam testes funcionais com testes mais precisos, como a dinamometria isocinética.OBJETIVO: Correlacionar as variáveis isocinéticas pico de torque (PT), potência média (PM) e trabalho total (TT) de rotadores internos de ombro em atletas de handebol do gênero masculino com o teste funcional de arremesso de medicine ball (AMB).MÉTODOS: Participaram desse estudo 25 atletas amadores de handebol do gênero masculino com idade média 17,72 ± 2,16 anos. A coleta de dados foi realizada em dois dias diferentes, respeitando intervalo mínimo de 48 horas entre as sessões. De maneira aleatória, definida por sorteio, os atletas faziam o teste isocinético ou o teste de AMB. Para o teste de AMB, o atleta deveria arremessar uma medicine ball de3 kg a maior distância possível. Para análise isocinética, foram utilizadas as velocidades de 60°/s e 180°/s avaliando a capacidade muscular dos músculos rotadores internos de ombro. Para análise de associações foram utilizados os testes de correlação de Pearson e regressão linear simples.RESULTADOS: Foram observadas associações moderadas (0,60 ≤ r < 0,70; p<0,05) para as variáveis PT, PM e TT e o teste de AMB na velocidade de 60°/s. Além disso, observaram-se associações altas (r ≥ 0,70; p<0,05) entre as variáveis estudadas na velocidade de 180°/s.CONCLUSÃO: As variáveis isocinéticas PT, PM e TT, de rotadores internos de ombro do braço dominante de atletas de handebol do gênero masculino apresentam correlação moderada a alta com o teste funcional de AMB.

Abstract
In tennis, sport-specific technical skills are predominant factors, although a complex profile of physical performance factors is also required. The fitness test batteries assist in examining tennis players' capabilities for performance at different levels in the laboratory as well as in the field, in the junior or elite level. While laboratory tests can be, and are, used to evaluate basic performance characteristics of athletes in most individual sports, in a more specific approach, field-based methods are better suited to the demands of complex intermittent sports like tennis. A regular test battery performed at different periods of the year allows to obtain an individual's performance profile, as well as the ability to prescribe individual training interventions. Thus, the aim of the present review was to describe and evaluate the different physical tests recommended and used by practitioners, sports scientists and institutions (national tennis federations).

Abstract
Context: Functional performance testing of athletes can determine physical limitations that may affect sporting activities. Optimal functional performance testing simulates the athlete’s activity. Evidence Acquisition: A Medline search from 1960 to 2012 was implemented with the keywords functional testing, functional impairment testing, and functional performance testing in the English language. Each author also undertook independent searches of article references. Conclusion: Functional performance tests can bridge the gap between general physical tests and full, unrestricted athletic activity.

Abstract
Assessment of an individual's functional ability can be complex. This assessment should also be individualized and adaptable to changes in functional status. In the first article of this series, we operationally defined function, discussed the construct of function, examined the evidence as it relates to assessment methods of various aspects of function, and explored the multi-dimensional nature of the concept of function. In this case report, we aim to demonstrate the utilization of a multi-dimensional assessment method (functional performance testing) as it relates to a high-level athlete presenting with pain in the low back and groin. It is our intent to demonstrate how the clinician should continually adapt their assessment dependent on the current functional abilities of the patients.
