Unraveling cEMG-wet sEMG Correlation Dynamics: Investigating Influential Factors

The electromyography (EMG) signal provides insight into neuromuscular activity which is used in medical and technological fields. Traditional needle electrodes and surface electrodes have several drawbacks making them less suitable for portable and long-term use. In contrast, emerging capacitive electrodes offer promising features over the existing electrodes. Yet, the full potential of capacitive electrodes remains untapped due to the lack of comprehensive design optimization for consistently reliable signal quality. This study highlights the complex interplay of factors influencing correlation in capacitive EMG (cEMG) and wet surface EMG (wet sEMG) signals. The study emphasizes the importance of the surface area of capacitive electrodes, muscle force, preprocessing, and sampling frequency in understanding and improving the correlation between cEMG and wet sEMG signals, providing valuable insights for future research and applications in the field. The study reveals that the electrode area has no significant effect on the correlation. However, the correlation significantly depends on the muscle force. In addition, removing artifacts from the cEMG signal increases the correlation, especially for lower force where artifacts are significant. Again, oversampling the EMG signal above 800 Hz does not have any impact on increasing the correlation but the correlation decreases with higher inter-electrode distance (IED). In this research, the highest correlation of 82.89% (normalized-91.62%) between cEMG and sEMG has been achieved for high muscle force with a plate area of 4 cm2. Therefore, the capacitive electrode can be an alternative for EMG signal acquisition.

Ultrathin crystalline-silicon-based strain gauges with deep learning algorithms for silent speech interfaces

A wearable silent speech interface (SSI) is a promising platform that enables verbal communication without vocalization. The most widely studied methodology for SSI focuses on surface electromyography (sEMG). However, sEMG suffers from low scalability because of signal quality-related issues, including signal-to-noise ratio and interelectrode interference. Hence, here, we present a novel SSI by utilizing crystalline-silicon-based strain sensors combined with a 3D convolutional deep learning algorithm. Two perpendicularly placed strain gauges with minimized cell dimension (<0.1 mm²) could effectively capture the biaxial strain information with high reliability. We attached four strain sensors near the subject’s mouths and collected strain data of unprecedently large wordsets (100 words), which our SSI can classify at a high accuracy rate (87.53%). Several analysis methods were demonstrated to verify the system’s reliability, as well as the performance comparison with another SSI using sEMG electrodes with the same dimension, which exhibited a relatively low accuracy rate (42.60%).

Designing an efficient platform that enables verbal communication without vocalization remains a challenge. Here, the authors propose a silent speech interface by utilizing a deep learning algorithm combined with strain sensors attached near the subject’s mouth, able to collect 100 words and classify at a high accuracy rate.

Applying Machine Learning to Finger Movements Using Electromyography and Visualization in Opensim

Electromyographic signals have been used with low-degree-of-freedom prostheses, and recently with multifunctional prostheses. Currently, they are also being used as inputs in the human–computer interface that controls interaction through hand gestures. Although there is a gap between academic publications on the control of an upper-limb prosthesis developed in laboratories and its service in the natural environment, there are attempts to achieve easier control using multiple muscle signals. This work contributes to this, using a database and biomechanical simulation software, both open access, to seek simplicity in the classifiers, anticipating their implementation in microcontrollers and their execution in real time. Fifteen predefined finger movements of the hand were identified using classic classifiers such as Bayes, linear and quadratic discriminant analysis. The idealized movements of the database were modeled with Opensim for visualization. Combinations of two preprocessing methods—the forward sequential selection method and the feature normalization method—were evaluated to increase the efficiency of these classifiers. The statistical methods of cross-validation, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan were used to validate the results. Furthermore, the classifier with the best recognition result was redesigned into a new feature space using the sparse matrix algorithm to improve it, and to determine which features can be eliminated without degrading the classification. The classifiers yielded promising results—the quadratic discriminant being the best, achieving an average recognition rate for each individual considered of 96.16%, and with 78.36% for the total sample group of the eight subjects, in an independent test dataset. The study ends with the visual analysis under Opensim of the classified movements, in which the usefulness of this simulation tool is appreciated by revealing the muscular participation, which can be useful during the design of a multifunctional prosthesis.

Muscle endurance time estimation during isometric training using electromyogram and supervised learning

Constant-force isometric muscle training is useful for increasing the maximal strength , rehabilitation and work-fatigue assessment. Earlier studies have shown that muscle fatigue characteristics can be used for evaluating muscle endurance limit.

STUDY OBJECTIVE

To predict muscle endurance time during isometric task using frequency spectrum characteristics of surface electromyography signals along with analysis of frequency spectrum shape and scale during fatigue accumulation.

METHOD

Thirteen subjects performed isometric lateral raise at 60% MVC of deltoid (lateral) till endurance limit. Time windowed sEMG frequency spectrum was modelled using 2-parameter distributions namely Gamma and Weibull for spectrum analysis and endurance prediction.

RESULTS

Gamma distribution provided better spectrum fitting (P < 0.001) than Weibull distribution. Spectrum Distribution demonstrated no change in shape but shifted towards lower frequency with increase of magnitude at characteristic mode frequency. Support Vector Regression based algorithm was developed for endurance time estimation using features derived from fitted frequency spectrum. Time taken till endurance limit for acquired dataset 38.53 ± 17.33 s (Mean ± Standard Deviation) was predicted with error of 0.029 ± 4.19 s . R-square: 0.956, training and test sets RMSE was calculated as 3.96 and 4.29 s respectively. The application of the algorithm suggested that model required 70% of sEMG signal from maximum time of endurance for high prediction accuracy.

CONCLUSION

Endurance Limit prediction algorithm was developed for quantification of endurance time for optimizing isometric training and rehabilitation. Our method could help personalize and change conventional training method of same weight and duration for all subjects with optimized training parameters, based upon individual sEMG activity.
