Pacing strategy during the final stage of a self-paced V̇O₂max (SPV) test does not affect maximal oxygen uptake

Validity of the Wattbike 3-Minute Aerobic Test: Measurement and Estimation of V̇o2max

ABSTRACT

J Strength Cond Res 36(2): 400-404, 2022-The Wattbike includes a 3-minute aerobic test (3mAT) along with an estimation of V̇o2max. The estimation equation that is used is from a previous study using a different protocol and sedentary subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine whether (a) the 3mAT is able to elicit V̇o2max, and (b) whether this estimation is accurate. Thirteen cyclists (10 men; age: 29.2 ± 10.0 years, height 178.7 ± 8.3 cm, and mass 75.1 ± 12.5 kg) with a range of experience volunteered for this study. At the first visit, a self-paced V̇o2max (SPV) test was performed to obtain the "true" V̇o2max. At the second session, subjects completed the 3mAT. Primary dependent variables included maximal values of oxygen consumption (V̇o2), carbon dioxide production (V̇co2), heart rate (HR), ventilation (VE), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER). A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed no difference (p = 0.367) between V̇o2max values (3mAT estimation: 54.3 ± 9.3 ml·kg-1·min-1, 3mAT measured: 52.5 ± 8.7, SPV: 54.0 ± 9.7). Paired-samples t-tests showed that HR (p = 0.027) was higher in the SPV (184.7 ± 10.6 vs. 180.9 ± 6.3 b·min-1), whereas RER and V̇co2 were both higher in the 3mAT (1.29 ± 0.10 vs. 1.19 ± 0.06 and 4.92 ± 1.01 vs. 4.62 ± 0.98, respectively; both p < 0.05). The intraclass correlation between the V̇o2max measured from the SPV and 3mAT was 0.96 (95% CI: 0.88-0.99, p < 0.001), and between the 3mAT measured and estimated values was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.71-0.97 p < 0.001). If an athlete has access to a Wattbike, they can complete the 3mAT, receive their V̇o2max estimation, and be confident of its accuracy.

Increased Rate of Heat Storage, and No Performance Benefits, With Caffeine Ingestion Before a 10-km Run in Hot, Humid Conditions

PURPOSE

Although the effect of caffeine in thermoneutral or cool environmental conditions has generally shown performance benefits, its efficacy in hot, humid conditions is not as well known. The purpose of this study was to further examine the effect of caffeine ingestion on endurance running performance in the heat.

METHODS

Ten trained endurance runners (6 males; mean [SD] age = 26 [9] y, height = 176.7 [5.1] cm, and mass = 72.1 [8.7] kg) came to the lab for 4 visits. The first was a VO₂max test to determine cardiorespiratory fitness; the final 3 visits were 10-km runs in an environmental chamber at 30.6°C and 50% relative humidity under different conditions: 3 mg·kg^-1 body mass (low caffeine dosage), 6 mg·kg^-1 (moderate caffeine dosage), and a placebo. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were used to determine the effect of condition on the 10-km time, heart rate, core temperature, rating of perceived exertion, and thermal sensation.

RESULTS

There was no difference in the 10-km time between the placebo (53.2 [8.0] min), 3-mg·kg^-1 (53.4 [8.4]), and 6-mg·kg^-1 (52.7 [8.2]) conditions (P = .575, ηp2=.060 ). There was not a main effect of average heart rate (P = .406, ηp2=.107 ), rating of perceived exertion (P = .151, ηp2=.189 ), or thermal sensation (P = .286, ηp2=.130 ). There was a significant interaction for core temperature (P = .025, ηp2=.170 ); the moderate-dosage caffeine condition showed a higher rate of rise in core temperature (0.26 [0.08] °C·km^-1 vs 0.20 [0.06] and 0.19 [0.10] °C·km^-1 in the low-caffeine and placebo conditions, respectively).

CONCLUSION

The results support previous research showing a thermogenic effect of caffeine, as the moderate-dosage condition led to a greater rate of heat storage and no performance benefits.

Peak oxygen uptake measured during a perceptually-regulated exercise test is reliable in community-based manual wheelchair users

This study compares test-retest reliability and peak exercise responses from ramp-incremented (RAMP) and maximal perceptually-regulated (PRET_max) exercise tests during arm crank exercise in individuals reliant on manual wheelchair propulsion (MWP). Ten untrained participants completed four trials over 2-weeks (two RAMP (0-40 W + 5-10 W · min^-1) trials and two PRET_max. PRET_max consisted of five, 2-min stages performed at Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) 11, 13, 15, 17 and 20). Participants freely changed the power output to match the required RPE. Gas exchange variables, heart rate, power output, RPE and affect were determined throughout trials. The V̇O_2peak from RAMP (14.8 ± 5.5 ml · kg^-1 · min^-1) and PRET_max (13.9 ± 5.2 ml · kg^-1 · min^-1) trials were not different (P = 0.08). Measurement error was 1.7 and 2.2 ml · kg^-1 · min^-1 and coefficient of variation 5.9% and 8.1% for measuring V̇O_2peak from RAMP and PRET_max, respectively. Affect was more positive at RPE 13 (P = 0.02), 15 (P = 0.01) and 17 (P = 0.01) during PRET_max. Findings suggest that PRET_max can be used to measure V̇O_2peak in participants reliant on MWP and leads to a more positive affective response compared to RAMP.

Prescribing 6-weeks of running training using parameters from a self-paced maximal oxygen uptake protocol

Purpose

The self-paced maximal oxygen uptake test (SPV) may offer effective training prescription metrics for athletes. This study aimed to examine whether SPV-derived data could be used for training prescription.

Methods

Twenty-four recreationally active male and female runners were randomly assigned between two training groups: (1) Standardised (STND) and (2) Self-Paced (S-P). Participants completed 4 running sessions a week using a global positioning system-enabled (GPS) watch: 2 × interval sessions; 1 × recovery run; and 1 × tempo run. STND had training prescribed via graded exercise test (GXT) data, whereas S-P had training prescribed via SPV data. In S-P, intervals were prescribed as 7 × 120 s at the mean velocity of rating of perceived exertion 20 (_vRPE20). Both groups used 1:2 work:recovery ratio. Results

STND and S-P training significantly improved \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\dot {V}{{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}}$$\end{document}V˙O2max by 4 ± 8 and 6 ± 6%, CS by 7 ± 7 and 3 ± 3%; LT by 5 ± 4% and 7 ± 8%, respectively (all P < .05), with no differences observed between groups.

Conclusions

Novel metrics obtained from the SPV can offer similar training prescription and improvement in \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\dot {V}{{\text{O}}_{{\text{2max}}}}$$\end{document}V˙O2max, CS and LT compared to training derived from a traditional GXT.

Assessment of peak oxygen uptake during handcycling: Test-retest reliability and comparison of a ramp-incremented and perceptually-regulated exercise test

Purpose

To examine the reliability of a perceptually-regulated maximal exercise test (PRET_max) to measure peak oxygen uptake (V˙O2peak) during handcycle exercise and to compare peak responses to those derived from a ramp-incremented protocol (RAMP).

Methods

Twenty recreationally active individuals (14 male, 6 female) completed four trials across a 2-week period, using a randomised, counterbalanced design. Participants completed two RAMP protocols (20 W·min^-1) in week 1, followed by two PRET_max in week 2, or vice versa. The PRET_max comprised five, 2-min stages clamped at Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) 11, 13, 15, 17 and 20. Participants changed power output (PO) as often as required to maintain target RPE. Gas exchange variables (oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation), heart rate (HR) and PO were collected throughout. Differentiated RPE were collected at the end of each stage throughout trials.

Results

For relative V˙O2peak, coefficient of variation (CV) was equal to 4.1% and 4.8%, with ICC_(3,1) of 0.92 and 0.85 for repeated measures from PRET_max and RAMP, respectively. Measurement error was 0.15 L·min^-1 and 2.11 ml·kg^-1·min^-1 in PRET_max and 0.16 L·min^-1 and 2.29 ml·kg^-1·min^-1 during RAMP for determining absolute and relative V˙O2peak, respectively. The difference in V˙O2peak between PRET_max and RAMP was tending towards statistical significance (26.2 ± 5.1 versus 24.3 ± 4.0 ml·kg^-1·min^-1, P = 0.055). The 95% LoA were -1.9 ± 4.1 (-9.9 to 6.2) ml·kg^-1·min^-1.

Conclusion

The PRET_max can be used as a reliable test to measure V˙O2peak during handcycle exercise in recreationally active participants. Whilst PRET_max tended towards significantly greater V˙O2peak values than RAMP, the difference is smaller than measurement error of determining V˙O2peak from PRET_max and RAMP.
