Historical Field Records Reveal Habitat as an Ecological Correlate of Locomotor Phenotypic Diversity in the Radiation of Neotropical Geophagini Fishes

AbstractPhenotypic macroevolutionary studies provide insight into how ecological processes shape biodiversity. However, the complexity of phenotype-ecology relationships underscores the importance of also validating phenotype-based ecological inference with direct evidence of resource use. Unfortunately, macroevolutionary-scale ecological studies are often hindered by the challenges of acquiring taxonomically and spatially representative ecological data for large and widely distributed clades. The South American cichlid fish tribe Geophagini represents a continentally distributed radiation whose early locomotor morphological divergence suggests habitat as one ecological correlate of diversification, but an association between locomotor traits and habitat preference has not been corroborated. Field notes accumulated over decades of collecting across South America provide firsthand environmental records that can be mined for habitat data in support of macroevolutionary ecological research. In this study, we applied a newly developed method to transform descriptive field note information into quantitative habitat data and used it to assess habitat preference and its relationship to locomotor morphology in Geophagini. Field note-derived data shed light on geophagine habitat use patterns and reinforced habitat as an ecological correlate of locomotor morphological diversity. Our work emphasizes the rich data potential of museum collections, including often-overlooked material such as field notes, for evolutionary and ecological research.

Organismal form constrains the evolution of complex lever systems in Neotropical cichlid four-bar linkages

The diversification of functional traits may be limited by the intrinsic constraints of organismal form (i.e., constructional constraints), owing to the differential investment in different anatomical structures. In this study, we test whether overall organismal form impacts the evolution of shape and function in complex lever systems. We examined the relationship between four-bar shape and overall head shape in two four-bar linkage systems: the oral-jaw and hyoid-neurocranium systems in Neotropical cichlids. We also investigated the strength of form-function mapping in these four-bar linkages and the impact of constraining head shape on these correlations. We quantified the shape of the head and two four-bar linkages using geometric morphometrics and compared these with the kinematic transmission coefficient of each linkage system. The shapes of both linkages were strongly correlated with their mechanical properties, and head shape appears to constrain the shape of both four-bar linkages. Head shape induced greater integration between the two linkages, was associated with stronger form-function correlations and higher rates of evolution in biomechanically important features. Head shape constraints may also contribute to a weak but significant trade-off in linkage kinematics. Elongation of the head and body, in particular, appears to minimize the impact of this trade-off, possibly through maximizing anterior-posterior space availability. However, the strength of relationships between shape and function, and the impact of head shape differed between the two linkages, with the hyoid four-bar in general showing stronger form-function relationships despite being more independent from head shape constraints.

Functional Trade-offs Asymmetrically Promote Phenotypic Evolution

Trade-offs are thought to bias evolution and are core features of many anatomical systems. Therefore, trade-offs may have far-reaching macroevolutionary consequences, including patterns of morphological, functional, and ecological diversity. Jaws, like many complex anatomical systems, are comprised of elements involved in biomechanical trade-offs. We test the impact of a core mechanical trade-off, transmission of velocity versus force (i.e., mechanical advantage), on rates of jaw evolution in Neotropical cichlids. Across 130 species representing a wide array of feeding ecologies, we find that the velocity-force trade-off impacts evolution of the surrounding jaw system. Specifically, rates of jaw evolution are faster at functional extremes than in more functionally intermediate or unspecialized jaws. Yet, surprisingly, the effect on jaw evolution is uneven across the extremes of the velocity-force continuum. Rates of jaw evolution are 4 to 10-fold faster in velocity-modified jaws, whereas force-modified jaws are 7 to 18-fold faster, compared to unspecialized jaws, depending on the extent of specialization. Further, we find that a more extreme mechanical trade-off resulted in faster rates of jaw evolution. The velocity-force trade-off reflects a gradient from specialization on capture-intensive (e.g., evasive or buried) to processing-intensive prey (e.g., attached or shelled), respectively. The velocity extreme of the trade-off is characterized by large magnitudes of trait change leading to functionally divergent specialists and ecological stasis. By contrast, the force extreme of the trade-off is characterized by enhanced ecological lability made possible by phenotypes more readily co-opted for different feeding ecologies. This asymmetry of macroevolutionary outcomes along each extreme is likely the result of an enhanced utility of the pharyngeal jaw system as force-modified oral jaws are adapted for prey that require intensive processing (e.g., algae, detritus, and molluscs). The velocity-force trade-off, a fundamental feature of many anatomical systems, promotes rapid phenotypic evolution of the surrounding jaw system in a canonical continental adaptive radiation. Considering that the velocity-force trade-off is an inherent feature of all jaw systems that involve a lower element that rotates at a joint, spanning the vast majority of vertebrates, our results may be widely applicable across the tree of life. Quantifying production rates and size fractions of parrotfish-derived sediment: A key functional role on Maldivian coral reefs

Coral reef fish perform numerous important functional roles on coral reefs. Of these, carbonate sediment production, as a by-product of parrotfish feeding, is especially important for contributing to reef framework construction and reef-associated landform development. However, only limited data exist on: (i) how production rates vary among reef habitats as a function of parrotfish assemblages, (ii) the relative importance of sediment produced from eroded, reworked, and endogenous sources, or (iii) the size fractions of sediment generated by different parrotfish species and size classes. These parameters influence not only overall reef-derived sediment supply, but also influence the transport potential and depositional fate of this sedimentary material. Here, we show that parrotfish sediment production varies significantly between reef-platform habitats on an atoll-margin Maldivian reef. Highest rates of production (over 0.8 kg m-2 year-1) were calculated in three of the eight platform habitats; a rubble-dominated zone, an Acropora spp. dominated zone, and a patch reef zone. Habitat spatial extent and differences in associated parrotfish assemblages strongly influenced the total quantities of sediment generated within each habitat. Nearly half of total parrotfish sediment production occurred in the rubble habitat, which comprised only 8% of the total platform area. Over 90% of this sedimentary material originated from eroded reef framework as opposed to being reworked existing or endogenously produced sediment, and comprised predominantly coral sands (predominantly 125-1000 µm in diameter). This is comparable to the dominant sand types and size fractions found on Maldivian reef islands. By contrast, nearly half of the sediment egested by parrotfish in the Acropora spp. dominated and patch reef habitats resulted from reworked existing sediments. These differences between habitats are a result of the different parrotfish assemblages supported. Endogenous carbonate production was found to be insignificant compared to the quantity of eroded and reworked material. Our findings have important implications for identifying key habitats and species which act as major sources of sediment for reef-island systems.

Ecological limits on the decoupling of prey capture and processing in fishes

Ray-finned fishes have two jaw systems, the oral and pharyngeal jaws, which perform functions associated with prey capture and processing, respectively. The structural independence of the jaw systems is recognized as having broad implications for the functional and ecological diversity of the radiation. Cichlids (and a few other lineages) possess a modified pharyngeal jaw system that enhances prey processing versatility and capacity. This innovation, pharyngognathy, is hypothesized to have freed the oral jaws to diversify in terms of prey capture. We test the relative role of prey capture properties (e.g., evasiveness) and prey processing (e.g., crushing) in driving divergent selection in the oral and pharyngeal jaws using a macroevolutionary model fitting framework. Evolutionary outcomes were asymmetric. All transitions between different properties of prey capture had a corresponding transition in properties of prey processing. In contrast, fewer than half the transitions in the properties of prey processing had a corresponding prey capture transition. This discrepancy was further highlighted by multi-peak models that reflect the opposing function of each jaw system, which fit better than null models for oral jaw traits, but not pharyngeal jaw traits. These results suggest that pharyngeal jaw function can change independently from the function of the oral jaws, but not vice versa. This finding highlights the possibility of ecological limits to the evolutionary decoupling of jaw systems. The independent actions of prey capture and processing may be decoupled, but their respective functional demands (and evolution) are not. Therefore, prey likely impose some degree of coordinated evolution between acquisition and processing functional morphology, even in decoupled jaw systems.

Multiple Degrees of Freedom in the Fish Skull and Their Relation to Hydraulic Transport of Prey in Channel Catfish

Fish perform many complex manipulation behaviors without hands or flexible muscular tongues, instead relying on more than 20 movable skeletal elements in their highly kinetic skulls. How fish use their skulls to accomplish these behaviors, however, remains unclear. Most previous mechanical models have represented the fish skull using one or more planar four-bar linkages, which have just a single degree of freedom (DoF). In contrast, truncated-cone hydrodynamic models have assumed up to five DoFs. In this study, we introduce and validate a 3D mechanical linkage model of a fish skull that incorporates the pectoral girdle and mandibular and hyoid arches. We validate this model using an in vivo motion dataset of suction feeding in channel catfish and then use this model to quantify the DoFs in the fish skull, to categorize the motion patterns of the cranial linkage during feeding, and to evaluate the association between these patterns and food motion. We find that the channel catfish skull functions as a 17-link, five-loop parallel mechanism. Despite having 19 potential DoFs, we find that seven DoFs are sufficient to describe most of the motion of the cranial linkage, consistent with the fish skull functioning as a multi-DoF, manipulation system. Channel catfish use this linkage to generate three different motion patterns (rostrocaudal wave, caudorostral wave, and compressive wave), each with its own associated food velocity profile. These results suggest that biomechanical manipulation systems must have a minimum number of DoFs to effectively control objects, whether in water or air.
