High levels of abiotic noise in volatile organic compounds released by a desert perennial: implications for the evolution and ecology of airborne chemical communication

Integration of multiple volatile cues into plant defense responses

The ability to predict future risks is essential for many organisms, including plants. Plants can gather information about potential future herbivory by detecting volatiles that are emitted by herbivore-attacked neighbors. Several individual volatiles have been identified as active danger cues. Recent work has also shown that plants may integrate multiple volatiles into their defense responses. Here, I discuss how the integration of multiple volatiles can increase the capacity of plants to predict future herbivore attack. I propose that integration of multiple volatile cues does not occur at the perception stage, but may through downstream early defense signaling and then be further consolidated by hormonal crosstalk. Exploring plant volatile cue integration can facilitate our understanding and utilization of chemical information transfer.

Identification of a wild carrot as carrot psylla (Bactericera trigonica) attractant and host plant chemistry

Carrot psylla is one of the devastating pests of carrot throughout northern Europe and the Mediterranean basin. Here we characterized the behavioral response of psylla females towards different carrot germplasm and identified the chemical cues involved in the host selection of psylla females by oviposition choice experiments and metabolic profiling of leaf volatiles. In choice assays, carrot psylla displayed differential responses to tested 14 germplasm. Among germplasm, wild accessions 21793 and 20465 were highly preferred by carrot psylla, while wild accessions 20465 and the orange cultivar Nairobi were less. In non-choice experiments conducted only with this four-germplasm revealed that the carrot psylla females gave higher preference to the Nairobi and wild accession 20465, indicating the vicinity to other host plants in the same area might affect female preference. Moreover, the nymph development and survival experiments showed the lowest nymphs survival rate on the wild accessions 21793 and 20497. Furthermore, the volatile emissions among different carrot cultivars infested with psylla showed qualitative and quantitative differences versus intact plants. Among these volatiles, apiol, β-asarone, myristicin, and sabinene showed a relationship with psyllas growth and survival. We also showed that myristicin and sabinene exogenous applications caused a dramatic reduction in the number of eggs laid by psylla and subsequent nymph survival. This is an initial study of the volatiles that mediate attraction and oviposition preference of carrot psylla in response to its host plant. The results from this study provide baseline information for the development of new control strategies against carrot psylla.

The ecological consequences of herbivore-induced plant responses on plant-pollinator interactions

Plant induced responses to herbivory have long been found to function as plant direct and indirect defenses and to be major drivers of herbivore community and population dynamics. While induced defenses are generally understood as cost-saving strategies that allow plants to allocate valuable resources into defense expression, it recently became clear that, in particular, induced metabolic changes can come with significant ecological costs. In particular, interactions with mutualist pollinators can be significantly compromised by herbivore-induced changes in floral morphology and metabolism. We review recent findings on the evidence for ecological conflict between defending against herbivores and attracting pollinators while using similar modes of information transfer (e.g. visual, olfactory, tactile). Specifically, we discuss plant traits and mechanisms through which plants mediate interactions between antagonists and mutualist and present functional hypotheses for how plants can overcome the resulting conflicts.

The nutritional landscape of host plants for a specialist insect herbivore

Nutrition has far-reaching effects on both the ecology and evolution of species. A substantial body of work has examined the role of host plant quality on insect herbivores, with a particular focus on specialist-generalist dynamics, the interaction of growth and other physiological attributes on fitness and tritrophic effects. Measures of plant quality usually involve one or two axes of nutritional space: typically secondary metabolites or elemental proxies (N and C) of protein and carbohydrates, respectively.Here, we describe the nutrient space of seven host plants of the specialist insect herbivore, Manduca sexta, using an approach that measures physiologically relevant sources of nutrition, soluble protein and digestible carbohydrates. We show that plant species differ markedly in their nutrient content, offering developing insect herbivores a range of available nutrient spaces that also depend on the age of the leaves being consumed.The majority of host-plant species produce diets that are suboptimal to the herbivore, likely resulting in varying levels of compensatory feeding for M. sexta to reach target levels of protein to ensure successful growth and development. Low-quality diets can also impact immune function leading to complex patterns of optimization of plant resources that maximizes both growth and the ability to defend from parasitoids and pathogens. This study is the first to quantify the nutrient space of a suite of host plants used by an insect herbivore using physiologically relevant measures of nutrition.
