Climate affects the outbreaks of a forest defoliator indirectly through its tree hosts

Climate change reduces elevational and latitudinal differences in spring phenology of pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spectabilis Bulter)

The pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spectabilis Bulter, Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), as an ectotherm, temperature plays a crucial role in its development. With climate change, earlier development of insect pests is expected to pose a more frequent threat to forest communities. Yet the quantitative research about the extent to which global warming affects pine caterpillar populations is rarely understood, particularly across various elevations and latitudes. Spring phenology of pine caterpillars showed an advancing trend with 0.8 d/10a, 2.2 d/10a, 2.2 d/10a, and 3.3 d/10a under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 scenario, respectively. There was a maximum advance of 20 d in spring phenology of pine caterpillars during the 2090s, from mid-March to early March, and even late February. This study highlighted the significant advance in spring phenology at elevations >1000 m and lower latitudes. Consequently, the differences in elevational and latitudinal gradients were relatively small as the increasing temperatures at the end of the 21st century. And the average temperature in February-March was effective in explaining theses variability. These findings are crucial for adapting and mitigating to climate change.

Of clockwork and catastrophes: advances in spatiotemporal dynamics of forest Lepidoptera

We applied a systematic global literature survey from the last 2.5 years on spatiotemporal population dynamics - broadly defined - of Lepidopteran forest pests. Articles were summarized according to domain-specific (planetary ecology - remote sensing, evolutionary ecology - genetics and genomics, and theoretical ecology - modeling) contributions to contemporary investigation of the above theme. 'Model systems' dominating our literature survey were native Choristoneura fumiferana and invasive Lymantria dispar. These systems represent opposing ends of a more general equilibrium-disequilibrium gradient, with implications for less-studied taxa. The dynamics of Lepidopteran systems defy simple modeling approaches. Technologies and insights emerging from 'slower' science domains are informing more complex theory, including predictions of spread, impacts, or both posed by more recent invasions and the disrupting effects of climate change.

Suitability of Turkey Oak, European Beech, and Hornbeam to Gypsy Moth Feeding

Pest resistance of trees should be taken into account in future forest strategy planning and predicting risks of defoliation. The gypsy moth (GM) (Lymantria dispar L.) is a serious forest pest with outbreaking population dynamics. To estimate defoliation risk of the most widely distributed tree species in Balkan Peninsula and Europe (Turkey oak Quercus cerris L., European beech Fagus sylvatica L. and hornbeam Carpinus betulus L.), we carried out laboratory feeding trials and investigated their acceptability and suitability for GM development. We determined morphological and chemical attributes of these hosts as well as larval host preference, growth and nutritional indices. Preference, growth, and efficiency of food conversion into biomass were ranked in the order: Turkey oak ˃ European beech ˃ hornbeam. Hornbeam was the most avoided and showed the lowest conversion efficiency although, comparing to optimal oak host, its leaves were less tough, contained more water and exhibited similar values of nitrogen (index of protein content) and C/N ratio (index of investment into carbon based plant defense). We suggest that hornbeam and beech leaf chemical profiles should be further studied to reveal specific compounds that impose high metabolic cost to GM larvae. Moreover, additional research are needed to understand how intermediate hosts in natural populations affect GM outbreaks.
