Steam explosion (SE) and instant controlled pressure drop (DIC) as thermo-hydro-mechanical pretreatment methods for bioethanol production

Instant Controlled Pressure-Drop (DIC) for Volatile Compound Extraction and Bioethanol Production from Empty Aleppo Pinecones and Eucalyptus Chips: Process Optimization and Statistical Modeling

Several plant species contain volatile compounds extracted as "essential oils" through different technologies. After essential oil extraction, the residual solid is a lignocellulosic solid waste. This work proposes the instant controlled pressure-drop (DIC) technology to autovaporize volatile compounds and modify the lignocellulosic matrix. Indeed, DIC technology is a thermomechanical process based on short-time/high-temperature and pressure pretreatment. It enhances the saccharification and fermentation process (SSF) for bioethanol production. A 3-variable design of experiments optimized the DIC processing parameters to reach 100% efficiency (EE) of volatile compound extraction using response surface methodology (RSM). Eucalyptus chips presented 50 volatile identified compounds after 7 min of DIC treatment. 1,8-Cineole, β-phellandrene, aromadendrene, eudesmol, and spathulenol are the most important volatile compounds. The empty Aleppo pinecones delivered 32 volatile compounds in 5 min of DIC treatment, the most important of which were caryophyllene, nortricyclene, verbenol, and camphor. After the autovaporization extraction stage, solid fraction residues were hydrolyzed and fermented in the same stirred bioreactor, using SSF strategy for 72 h at 37 °C. The highest bioethanol yields reached 73.9% and 54.82% (g per 100 g DM) from eucalyptus chip and empty Aleppo pinecone, respectively.

Microbial tolerance engineering for boosting lactic acid production from lignocellulose

Lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive non-food feedstock for lactic acid production via microbial conversion due to its abundance and low-price, which can alleviate the conflict with food supplies. However, a variety of inhibitors derived from the biomass pretreatment processes repress microbial growth, decrease feedstock conversion efficiency and increase lactic acid production costs. Microbial tolerance engineering strategies accelerate the conversion of carbohydrates by improving microbial tolerance to toxic inhibitors using pretreated lignocellulose hydrolysate as a feedstock. This review presents the recent significant progress in microbial tolerance engineering to develop robust microbial cell factories with inhibitor tolerance and their application for cellulosic lactic acid production. Moreover, microbial tolerance engineering crosslinking other efficient breeding tools and novel approaches are also deeply discussed, aiming to providing a practical guide for economically viable production of cellulosic lactic acid.

Role of hydrothermal pretreatment towards sustainable biorefinery

Recently, the world is experiencing a shift from petroleum refineries to biorefineries due to fossil fuel depletion and environmental concerns. To achieve sustainable development of biorefineries and other components of the biofuel production process, eco-friendly and cost-effective approaches are necessary. Therefore, lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) must be exploited in biorefineries for the generation of a broad spectrum of products. The complex structure of LCB prevents its direct saccharification by enzymatic means, so pretreatment is necessary. There are several pretreatment technologies for disrupting the lignocellulosic structure, but hydrothermal pretreatment is the leading pretreatment technology for recovering hemicellulose fraction with a low number of inhibitors and an increased amount of cellulose. The severity of hydrothermal pretreatment plays a principal role in affecting cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin structure. A detailed account of microwave-assisted hydrothermal pretreatment technologies and the cost-effectiveness, eco-friendliness, and upcoming challenges of this technology for commercialization with the probable solution is presented.

Environmentally friendly acetic acid/steam explosion/supercritical carbon dioxide system for the pre-treatment of wheat straw

It is well established that pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is required to achieve an effective enzymatic saccharification process. At the present time, most of the touted pre-treatment technologies would cause environmental pollution and unsustainable water use for the pretreated material prior to enzymatic saccharification. To address these shortcomings, the pretreatment technology which combines the supercritical CO₂, SC-CO₂ (a green solvent), acetic acid, and steam explosion was used to assess the pretreatment of wheat straw for enzymatic saccharification. The effects of solvent concentration, impregnation temperature and time, pre-treatment time, and temperature, as well as SC-CO₂ pressure, contact time, and temperature, were evaluated. The results identified that at the optimum SC-CO₂ pressure of 18 MPa, the highest amount of reducing sugars (RS) was produced from the cellulosic pulp using Acetic acid/Steam/SC-CO₂ at 200 °C for 30 min, a value 20% more than the pulp produced with the Water/Steam/SC-CO₂. The effectiveness of the pretreatment process was attributed not only to delignification and defibrillation but also to the exposure of the cellulose structure evidenced from the proportion of the β-glycosidic linkages as shown by FTIR. Passing SC-CO₂ after the pretreatment reduces the amounts of fermentation inhibitors and eliminates the use of wash water.

Advances in Pretreatment of Straw Biomass for Sugar Production

Straw biomass is an inexpensive, sustainable, and abundant renewable feedstock for the production of valuable chemicals and biofuels, which can surmount the main drawbacks such as greenhouse gas emission and environmental pollution, aroused from the consumption of fossil fuels. It is rich in organic content but is not sufficient for extensive applications because of its natural recalcitrance. Therefore, suitable pretreatment is a prerequisite for the efficient production of fermentable sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, we provide an overview of various pretreatment methods to effectively separate the major components such as hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin and enhance the accessibility and susceptibility of every single component. This review outlines the diverse approaches (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, and combined treatments) for the excellent conversion of straw biomass to fermentable sugars, summarizes the benefits and drawbacks of each pretreatment method, and proposes some investigation prospects for the future pretreatments.

Recent advances in the valorization of plant biomass

Plant biomass is a highly abundant renewable resource that can be converted into several types of high-value-added products, including chemicals, biofuels and advanced materials. In the last few decades, an increasing number of biomass species and processing techniques have been developed to enhance the application of plant biomass followed by the industrial application of some of the products, during which varied technologies have been successfully developed. In this review, we summarize the different sources of plant biomass, the evolving technologies for treating it, and the various products derived from plant biomass. Moreover, the challenges inherent in the valorization of plant biomass used in high-value-added products are also discussed. Overall, with the increased use of plant biomass, the development of treatment technologies, and the solution of the challenges raised during plant biomass valorization, the value-added products derived from plant biomass will become greater in number and more valuable.
