Abstract
Purpose The prevalence of dysphagia in patients with neurodegenerative diseases (ND) is alarmingly high and frequently results in morbidity and accelerated mortality due to subsequent adverse events (e.g., aspiration pneumonia). Swallowing in patients with ND should be continuously monitored due to the progressive disease nature. Access to instrumental swallow evaluations can be challenging, and limited studies have quantified changes in temporal/spatial swallow kinematic measures in patients with ND. High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), a dysphagia screening method, has accurately differentiated between safe and unsafe swallows, identified swallow kinematic events (e.g., laryngeal vestibule closure [LVC]), and classified swallows between healthy adults and patients with ND. This study aimed to (a) compare temporal/spatial swallow kinematic measures between patients with ND and healthy adults and (b) investigate HRCA's ability to annotate swallow kinematic events in patients with ND. We hypothesized there would be significant differences in temporal/spatial swallow measurements between groups and that HRCA would accurately annotate swallow kinematic events in patients with ND. Method Participants underwent videofluoroscopic swallowing studies with concurrent HRCA. We used linear mixed models to compare temporal/spatial swallow measurements (n = 170 ND patient swallows, n = 171 healthy adult swallows) and deep learning machine-learning algorithms to annotate specific temporal and spatial kinematic events in swallows from patients with ND. Results Differences (p < .05) were found between groups for several temporal and spatial swallow kinematic measures. HRCA signal features were used as input to machine-learning algorithms and annotated upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening, UES closure, LVC, laryngeal vestibule reopening, and hyoid bone displacement with 66.25%, 85%, 68.18%, 70.45%, and 44.6% accuracy, respectively, compared to human judges' measurements. Conclusion This study demonstrates HRCA's potential in characterizing swallow function in patients with ND and other patient populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are scant data on the dimensional compatibility of cricothyroidotomy equipment and related airway anatomy. We compared the dimensional design of devices for cricothyroidotomy with anatomical airway data for adult patients. METHODS For all available cricothyroidotomy equipment the outer diameter was recorded from manufacturer information or, if not available, measured using a sliding calliper. Outer diameters were compared with recently published mean (standard deviation [sd]) values for the height of the cricothyroid membrane obtained from computed tomography, separately for males (7.9 [2.2] mm) and for females (5.9 [1.7] mm). RESULTS Twenty-one cricothyroidotomy sets (10 uncuffed, 11 cuffed) with 15 differently designed devices were included. Inner diameters of the tubes ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 mm and outer diameters from 5.0 to 11.7 mm. The outer diameter of the 15 different tubes was found to be greater than the mean membrane height of the adult male cricothyroid membrane in eight devices and greater than the mean membrane height for female adults in 10 devices. Considering the lower range of cricothyroid membrane height, 12 tube outer diameters would be too large for male adults and all 15 for female adults in this range. CONCLUSION The outer diameter of many devices currently marketed for cricothyroidotomy are oversized for adult airway anatomy, particularly for females. For emergency front-of-neck access through the cricothyroid membrane, anatomical data suggest that cricothyroidotomy devices with outer tube diameters of <7 mm for male and <6 mm for female adult patients should be preferred.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to determine whether the inhibition of apoptosis via pan-caspase inhibitors can attenuate the changes in the alveolar ridge upon tooth extraction. BACKGROUND Cells undergoing apoptosis might play a central role in the onset of alveolar bone resorption and the ensuing bone atrophy following tooth extraction. Caspases are proteases that regulate apoptotic cell death. It is, therefore, reasonable to hypothesize that blocking apoptosis with pan-caspase inhibitors attenuates the changes in the alveolar ridge following tooth extraction. METHODS In 16 inbred rats, the mandibular first (M1) and second (M2) molars of one side were extracted. Following random allocation, the rats received either a cell-permeable pan-caspase inhibitor or diluent. After a healing period of 10 days, changes in shape and height of the alveolar ridge were examined using geometric morphometrics and linear measurements based on micro-computed tomography. RESULTS Geometric morphometric analysis revealed that the pan-caspase inhibitor prevented major shape changes of the alveolar ridge following M1 tooth extraction (P < .05). Furthermore, linear measurements confirmed that the pan-caspase inhibitor significantly prevented the atrophy of the alveolar ridge height following M1 tooth extraction compared to the diluent controls (-0.53 mm vs -0.24 mm; P = .012). M2 tooth extraction caused no shape changes of the alveolar ridge, and thus, the pan-caspase inhibitor group did not differ from the control group (-0.14 mm vs -0.05 mm; P = .931). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that the inhibition of apoptosis may attenuate shape changes of the alveolar ridge following M1 tooth extraction in rodents.

Abstract
High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA) is an evolving clinical method for noninvasive screening of dysphagia that relies on data science, machine learning, and wearable sensors to investigate the characteristics of disordered swallowing function in people with dysphagia. HRCA has shown promising results in categorizing normal and disordered swallowing (i.e., screening) independent of human input, identifying a variety of swallowing physiological events as accurately as trained human judges. The system has been developed through a collaboration of data scientists, computer-electrical engineers, and speech-language pathologists. Its potential to automate dysphagia screening and contribute to evaluation lies in its noninvasive nature (wearable electronic sensors) and its growing ability to accurately replicate human judgments of swallowing data typically formed on the basis of videofluoroscopic imaging data. Potential contributions of HRCA when videofluoroscopic swallowing study may be unavailable, undesired, or not feasible for many patients in various settings are discussed, along with the development and capabilities of HRCA. The use of technological advances and wearable devices can extend the dysphagia clinician's reach and reinforce top-of-license practice for patients with swallowing disorders.

Abstract
Identifying physiological impairments of swallowing is essential for determining accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment for patients with dysphagia. The hyoid bone is an anatomical landmark commonly monitored during analysis of videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSSs). Its displacement is predictive of penetration/aspiration and is associated with other swallow kinematic events. However, VFSSs are not always readily available/feasible and expose patients to radiation. High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA), which uses acoustic and vibratory signals from a microphone and tri-axial accelerometer, is under investigation as a non-invasive dysphagia screening method and potential adjunct to VFSS when it is unavailable or not feasible. We investigated the ability of HRCA to independently track hyoid bone displacement during swallowing with similar accuracy to VFSS, by analyzing vibratory signals from a tri-axial accelerometer using machine learning techniques. We hypothesized HRCA would track hyoid bone displacement with a high degree of accuracy compared to humans. Trained judges completed frame-by-frame analysis of hyoid bone displacement on 400 swallows from 114 patients and 48 swallows from 16 age-matched healthy adults. Extracted features from vibratory signals were used to train the predictive algorithm to generate a bounding box surrounding the hyoid body on each frame. A metric of relative overlapped percentage (ROP) compared human and machine ratings. The mean ROP for all swallows analyzed was 50.75%, indicating > 50% of the bounding box containing the hyoid bone was accurately predicted in every frame. This provides evidence of the feasibility of accurate, automated hyoid bone displacement tracking using HRCA signals without use of VFSS images.

Abstract
Sclerosteosis, a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder caused by a mutation of the Sost gene, manifests in the facial skeleton by gigantism, facial distortion, mandibular prognathism, cranial nerve palsy, and, in extreme cases, compression of the medulla oblongata. Mice lacking sclerostin reflect some symptoms of sclerosteosis, but this is the first report of the effect on the facial skeleton. We used geometric morphometrics (GMM) to analyze the deformations of the murine facial skeleton from the wild‐type to the Sost gene knockout. Landmark coordinates were obtained by surface reconstructions from micro‐computed tomography. Centroid size, principal component scores in shape space and form space, and asymmetry were computed by the standard GMM formulas, and dental and skeletal jaw lengths were examined as ratios. We show here that, compared to wild type controls, mice lacking Sost have larger centroid size (effect size, p‐value: 4.59, <.001), higher mean asymmetry (1.14, .065), dental and skeletal mandibular prognathism (1.36, .010 and 5.92, <.001), a smaller foramen magnum (−1.71, .015), and calvaria that are more highly curved (form space p = 4.09, .002; shape space p = 12.82, .002). These features of mice lacking sclerostin largely correspond to the changes of the facial skeleton observed in sclerosteosis. This alignment further supports claims that the Sost gene plays a fundamental role in bony facial development in rodents and humans alike.

Abstract
The agenesis of one or both upper thyroid horns (UTH) cannot be considered rare with an incidence ranging between 0.8-9.4%. Studies so far have mostly described frequencies, yet surveys on its morphology and traumatology are missing. It is unknown to what extent this anatomical variant impacts the overall symmetry of the larynx. For the trauma reconstruction after cervical trauma this knowledge is required as an asymmetric larynx can show a different fracture pattern. In this investigation, larynxes with unilateral (n=21)/bilateral (n=5) agenesis of the upper thyroid horn(s) and a control group with regular larynxes (n=23) were juxtaposed. Various measurements were taken after μ-CT scanning. In total 10 distances/angles for the thyroid cartilage and 8 for the cricoid cartilage were compared. Using intra-individual and matched pair comparisons the symmetry was assessed. The results of this investigation showed significant differences in the intra-individual and pairwise comparison for the opening angle and the length of the thyroid alae although the lateral inclination of the thyroid alae showed no significant difference. Combining these three parameters into one symmetry score, the comparison was not significant. This research demonstrates that neither unilateral nor bilateral agenesis of the UTH is related to a structural disbalance of the larynx. Thus, different fracture patterns or vulnerabilities are not to be expected.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy (EAAL) is an effective glottis enlarging procedure for the treatment of bilateral vocal cord palsy (BVCP). The postoperative glottic configuration changes can be evaluated by modern, high-resolution, 3D image reconstructions. Functional results are described by spirometry as well as objective and subjective phoniatric tests. METHODS Unilateral EAAL was performed in ten malignant thyroid gland tumor patients (eight women, two men), who had BVCP after thyroid surgery. Slicer 3D® software was used for morphometric analysis. Pre- and postoperative peak inspiratory flow (PIF) and standard phoniatric parameters were compared. RESULTS The glottic gap improved significantly (+ 60%). Significant improvement of PIF was found in all cases. Phoniatric tests revealed better quality of voice and patient satisfaction. Their voices changed from a severely impaired to a socially acceptable, almost normal, quality. CONCLUSION The results support our clinical observations that the ideal position of the lateralization sutures is the one which provides a physiological abduction position of the arytenoid cartilage. Considering these good results, the surgical indications for minimally invasive endoscopic arytenoid lateropexy may be extended.

Abstract
Sex determination for unidentified human remains is important because the determined sex is usually used as a foundation for the estimation of other biological profiles. This study investigated the sexual dimorphism of the adult hyoid bone and developed discriminant equations to accurately estimate sex in a contemporary Japanese population using measurements on two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) images. The study sample comprised 280 cadavers (140 males, 140 females) of known age and sex that underwent postmortem CT and subsequent forensic autopsy. In accordance with previous studies, seven measurements were performed using two-dimensional CT reconstructed images. Most measurements of males were significantly greater than those of females. The perpendicular length from the most anterior edge of the hyoid body to the line that connects the most distal points of the greater horns of the hyoid and the linear distance between the most lateral edges of the hyoid body most significantly contributed to sex determination. This study demonstrated that discriminant functions on the basis of three measurements provided higher rates of accurate sex classification (93.3-94.6%) than univariate functions. Therefore, the hyoid bone is highly sexually dimorphic in the contemporary Japanese population and may be useful in forensic contexts for sex determination with a high level of accuracy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the changes in vocal fold inferior surface hypertrophy (VFISH) on vocal fold vibration by aerodynamic and acoustic analysis. The present study allows us to gain new insights into the subglottal convergence angle (SCA), which will change with VFISH. STUDY DESIGN The study is prospective, and designed for repeated measures with each excised canine larynx serving as own control. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Three degrees of VFISH, initial, mild, and severe, were simulated by injecting different doses of fructose injections into the inferior surface of the vocal folds of 10 excised canine larynges. Computed tomographic images of the larynx were gathered, and three-dimensional models of the airway and vocal folds were reconstructed using the Mimics software. The SCA was measured from the reconstructed models. Phonation threshold flow (PTF), phonation threshold pressure (PTP), and mean flow rate (MFR) were recorded directly in the excised canine larynx phonation setup. Glottal resistance (GR), sound pressure level (SPL), fundamental frequency (F0), and formants 1-4 (F1-4) were measured when subglottal pressure (Psub) was at 1.5 kPa or 2.5 kPa, separately. Using ordinary one-way analysis of variance, we compared the aerodynamic outcomes and voice quality among the three groups of hypertrophy. RESULTS The SCA, PTP, and PTF increased with the degree of VFISH. When the Psub was controlled at 1.5 kPa or 2.5 kPa, F0 also increased significantly with the degree of VFISH of the excised canine larynges. The MFR, GR, SPL, and F1-4 had little change between the three groups and were not significantly different. CONCLUSION The VFISH makes onset phonation more difficult, increases the SCA, and increases the F0 in sustained phonation.
