Abstract
Anatomical dissection is known to serve as an integral tool in teaching gross anatomy, including postgraduate training. A variety of embalming techniques exist, resulting in different haptic and optical tissue properties. This study aimed to objectify learning outcomes and medical student perceptions related to the use of two widely used embalming techniques, namely Thiel and ethanol-glycerin embalming. Between 2020 and 2022, first- and second-year medical students enrolled in the course on topographic anatomy participated in this study. Objective structured practical examinations were carried out for the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and extremity regions following regional dissection just before the oral examinations began. Six to ten numbered tags were marked in prosections of each region in Thiel- and ethanol-glycerin-embalmed specimens. Following the examinations, the students were surveyed regarding the suitability of the two embalming techniques with respect to preservation, colorfastness, tissue pliability, and the suitability in preparing for their anatomy examinations. Consistently higher scores were achieved for the thoracic and abdominal regions in ethanol-glycerin-embalmed specimens when compared to Thiel. No benefit was found for Thiel-embalmed upper or lower extremities. Tissues embalmed with ethanol-glycerin were rated higher for preservation and suitability to achieve the learning objectives, tissue pliability was rated higher for Thiel-embalmed tissues. Ethanol-glycerin embalming appears to offer certain advantages for undergraduate students in recognizing visceral structures, which may align with students' ideas on tissue suitability for their learning. Consequently, the benefits reported for Thiel embalming for postgraduate study unlikely reflect its suitability for novices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advancing surgical techniques require a high level of adaptation and learning skills on the part of surgeons. The authors need selection procedures and decision support systems for the recruitment of medical students and young surgeons. The authors aimed to investigate factors influencing the surgical performance and learning abilities of surgeons and medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS The training scores of persons attending 16 standardized training courses (at three training centers) of the German Working Group for Gynecological Endoscopy (AGE e.V.) from 2017 to 2020, individual characteristics, and the results of psychomotor tests of three-dimensional imagination and hand-eye coordination were correlated. Similar analyses were performed for medical students in their final clinical year from 2019 to 2020. The training concept was evaluated in a prospective, multicenter, interdisciplinary, multinational setting. RESULTS In all, 180 of 206 physicians (response rate 87.4%) and 261 medical students (response rate 100%) completed the multistage training concept successfully. Of personal characteristics, the strongest correlation was noted for good surgical performance and learning success, and the absolute number of performed laparoscopic surgeries ( r =0.28-0.45, P <0.001/ r =0.1-0.28, P <0.05). A high score on the spatial visualization ability test was also correlated with good surgical performance ( r =0.18-0.27, P <0.01). Among medical students with no surgical experience, however, age was negatively correlated with surgical performance, that is the higher the age, the lower the surgical performance ( r =0.13/ r =0.22, P <0.05/ P <0.001). CONCLUSION Individual factors (e.g. surgical experience, self-assessment, spatial visualization ability, eye-hand coordination, age) influence surgical performance and learning. Further research will be needed to create better decision support systems and selection procedures for prospective physicians. The possibilities of surgical training should be improved, promoted, and made accessible to a maximum number of surgical trainees because individual learning curves can be overcome even by less talented surgeons. Training options should be institutionalized for those attending medical school.

Abstract
Robot-assisted surgical methods are a development and supplement to conventional laparoscopy. Thus, appropriate training of surgeons in this specialty is indispensable. Especially for the initial phase, simulation programs - similar to those used in aviation - are ideally suited to introduce surgeons to the technically challenging surgical procedure. Later on, but still at the beginning of the learning curve, proctoring has proven its worth in order to allow the surgeon to be trained on site, to train him individually and to introduce him to more complex cases. An essential component of successful training concepts is the feedback: after some time and in written form, the surgeon to be trained receives a summary or a guideline, which describes the existing situation as well as suggestions for improvement and future potential. The implementation of such feedback allows the surgeon, in addition to the number of cases completed, to put his self-assessment into perspective and adjust development goals. Thus, feedback is the crucial interface between the beginning of a learning curve and advanced surgical skills, including the possibility of realistic self-assessment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Training formats for transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) are limited. Our aim was to create and investigate a TOETVA training model for general and ENT surgeons. METHODS A total of 15 modified Larssen solution (MLS) human cadavers were used in the study. A day duration TOETVA human cadaver workshops were offered in two years consecutive. Post-training verbal and online questionnaires were applied to all trainers to evaluate course structure and program, organoleptic characteristics of MLS-fixed human cadavers, and TOETVA training effectiveness. Cost assessment is included in the study. RESULTS Ninety-eight participants, i.e., 14 trainers and 84 hands-on (HO) and observer (OB) trainees, attended the workshops, completed the tasks assigned, and fulfilled the questionnaires. Implementation of all steps of TOETVA was approved positively by 89.8% of all participants, 94.4% of HO, and 83.3% of OB trainees. Regarding human cadaver and teaching quality, 10.8 ± 0.8 (10-12) human cadavers were "practical" by 13.2 (94.5%) of the trainers, and by 33.3 (92.5%) of the trainees for all steps of TOETVA. The cadavers were stored for 4.53 years and used 6.27 times repeatedly for endoscopic workshops and research studies. TOETVA workshop cost with repeatable use of MLS-fixed human cadaver is half of other performed TOETVA workshops. CONCLUSIONS A TOETVA human cadaver workshop model has not been reported yet. Our findings suggest the feasibility of MLS-fixed human cadaver model for training of TOETVA, preserve the organoleptic properties necessary for the implementation of surgical steps, and reduce the cost.

Abstract
Standards of care offer doctors and patients the confidence that an established quality, evidence-based, care is provided, and represent a tool for optimal responding to the population’s needs. It is expected that they will increasingly express a multimodal relationship with gynecologic laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is, now, a standard procedure in operative gynecology, standards are embedded in many laparoscopic procedures, standardization of the skills/competency assessment has been progressively developed, and the proof of competency in laparoscopy may become a standard of care. A continuous development of surgical education includes standard equipment (that may bring value for future advance), standardized training, testing (and performance) assessment, educational process and outcome monitoring/evaluation, patients’ care, and protection, etc. Standards of care and training have a reciprocally sustaining relationship, as training is an essential component of standards of care while care is provided at higher standards after a structured training and as credentialing/certification reunites the two. It is envisaged that through development and implementation, the European wide standards of care in laparoscopic surgery (in close harmonization with personalized medicine) would lead to effective delivery of better clinical services and provide excellent training and education.

Abstract
Background: The Versius® is a recently approved robotic surgical system for general surgery procedures in adults. Before any application in children, data of its feasibility and safety in small cavities has to be compiled, beginning with inanimate models. Therefore, the aim of this preclinical study was to assess the Versius® system for its performance in small boxes simulating small body cavities. Methods: In total, 8 cardboard boxes of decreasing volumes (15.75 L to 106 mL) were used. The procedures, two single stitches with two square knots each, were performed in every box, starting in the largest and consecutively exchanging the box to the next smaller one. The evaluation included procedure time, port placement and pivot point setup, arrangement of the robotic arms and instrumentation, amount of internal and external instrument–instrument collisions and instrument–box collisions. Results: All procedures could be successfully performed in all boxes. The procedure time decreased due to the learning curve in the first four boxes (15.75 to 1.87 L) and consecutively increased from boxes of 1.22 L up to the smallest box with the dimensions of 4.4 × 4.9 × 4.9 cm3. This may be based on the progress of complexity of the procedures in small cavities, which is also depicted by the synchronous increase of the internal instrument–instrument and instrument–box collisions. Conclusion: With the use of the Versius® robotic surgical system, we were able to perform robotic reconstructive procedures, such as intracorporal suturing and knot tying, in cavities as small as 106 mL. Whether this system is comparable or even superior to conventional laparoscopic surgery in small cavities, such as in children, has to be evaluated. Furthermore, before any application in newborns or infants, ongoing evaluation of this system should be performed in a live animal model.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the human body is based on teaching and research. Anatomy remains an essential prerequisite for medical personnel to know the human body. The idea of Thiel's technique is to preserve the natural texture, volume, color and shape of the body. The objective of this study was to analyze a literature review of this technique from the perspective of anatomy teaching and biomechanical research. METHOD We have taken up the process of Thiel's method from the original publication, stating the known applications of this technique in teaching and research. We have integrated into our study the specific advantages of using bodies preserved by this method in intertropical countries with a warm climate: the example of Gabon. DISCUSSION Biomechanical research and teaching of medical and surgical sciences are regularly performed on human cadavers. Anatomical dissection therefore represents one of the main activities of anatomy laboratories. We have limited our analysis to aspects of anatomy teaching, research, and clinical and surgical practice. CONCLUSION We have sought to popularize the Thiel body preservation technique. It offers many advantages. Teaching and research on human cadavers preserved by this method is an educational alternative. The simulation centre creates the conditions of a surgical block for the learners. We recommend this technique to anatomists and clinicians. This technique seems to be very interesting for structures with a limited number of bodies.

Abstract
Background: Live surgery events serve as a valuable tool for surgical education, but also raise ethical concerns about patient safety and professional performance. In the present study, we evaluate the technical feasibility and didactic benefits of live surgery on body donors compared to real patients. Methods: A live surgery session performed on a body donor’s cadaver embalmed in ethanol–glycerol–lysoformin was integrated into the live surgery program presented at a major gynecological convention of minimally invasive surgery. Surgical procedures carried out in real patients were paralleled in the body donor, including the dissection and illustration of surgically relevant anatomical landmarks. A standardized questionnaire was filled by the participants (n = 208) to evaluate the appropriateness, effectiveness, and benefits of this novel concept. Results: The live surgery event was appreciated as a useful educational tool. With regard to the use of body donors, authenticity was rated high (85.5%), and the overall value of body donors for surgical education and training was rated very high (95.0%). The didactic benefit of simultaneous operations performed on body donors and real patients was considered particularly useful (95.5%), whereas complete replacement of real patients by body donors was not favored (14.5%). Conclusions: The study demonstrated both the technical feasibility and didactic benefits of performing minimally invasive surgery in body donors as part of live surgery events. This novel concept has the potential to enhance anatomical knowledge, providing insights into complex surgical procedures, and may serve to overcome yet unresolved ethical concerns related to live surgery events.
