An integrated optimization technique for optimal power flow solution

A leader supply-demand-based optimization for large scale optimal power flow problem considering renewable energy generations

The supply-demand-based optimization (SDO) is among the recent stochastic approaches that have proven its capability in solving challenging engineering tasks. Owing to the non-linearity and complexity of the real-world IEEE optimal power flow (OPF) in modern power system issues and like the existing algorithms, the SDO optimizer necessitates some enhancement to satisfy the required OPF characteristics integrating hybrid wind and solar powers. Thus, a SDO variant namely leader supply-demand-based optimization (LSDO) is proposed in this research. The LSDO is suggested to improve the exploration based on the simultaneous crossover and mutation mechanisms and thereby reduce the probability of trapping in local optima. The LSDO effectiveness has been first tested on 23 benchmark functions and has been assessed through a comparison with well-regarded state-of-the-art competitors. Afterward, Three well-known constrained IEEE 30, 57, and 118-bus test systems incorporating both wind and solar power sources were investigated in order to authenticate the performance of the LSDO considering a constraint handling technique called superiority of feasible solutions (SF). The statistical outcomes reveal that the LSDO offers promising competitive results not only for its first version but also for the other competitors.

Cross-entropy boosted CRO-SL for optimal power flow in smart grids

Optimal power flow (OPF) is a complex, highly nonlinear, NP-hard optimization problem, in which the goal is to determine the optimal operational parameters of a power-related system (in many cases a type of smart or micro grid) which guarantee an economic and effective power dispatch. In recent years, a number of approaches based on metaheuristics algorithms have been proposed to solve OPF problems. In this paper, we propose the use of the Cross-Entropy (CE) method as a first step depth search operator to assist population-based evolutionary methods in the framework of an OPF problem. Specifically, a new variant of the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm boosted with CE method (CE+CRO-SL) is presented in this work. We have adopted the IEEE 57-Bus System as a test scenario which, by default, has seven thermal generators for power production for the grid. We have modified this system by replacing three thermal generators with renewable source generators, in order to consider a smart grid approach with renewable energy production. The performance of CE+CRO-SL in this particular case study scenario has been compared with that of well-known techniques such as population’s methods CMA-ES and EPSO (both boosted with CE). The results obtained indicate that CE+CRO-SL showed a superior performance than the alternative techniques in terms of efficiency and accuracy. This is justified by its greater exploration capacity, since it has internally operations coming from different heuristics, thus surpassing the performance of classic methods. Moreover, in a projection analysis, the CE+CRO-SL provides a profit of millions of dollars per month in all cases tested considering the modified version of the IEEE 57-Bus smart grid system.

A Novel Chaotic Rao-2 Algorithm for Optimal Power Flow Solution

This article suggests a novel chaotic Rao-2 algorithm to solve various optimal power flow (OPF) problems. The basic Rao-2 solver is a newly developed metaphor-less optimization tool. The novel optimization course of the basic Rao-2 algorithm relies on the finest and inferior solutions within the population and the indiscriminate interrelations among the nominee individuals. This tactic allows superior directions to scrutinize the exploration space. In this work, a novel chaotic Rao-2 algorithm-inspired scheme for handling the OPF problem is offered. In the offered solver, a chaotic tactic is amalgamated into the movement formula of the basic Rao-2 algorithm to enhance the variety of solutions and enhance both its global and local search capabilities. This novel scheme, which incorporates the features of the basic Rao-2 algorithm and chaotic dynamics, is then utilized to solve various OPF problems. For the OPF solution, five situations are investigated. The offered solver is examined on two standard IEEE test grids and the emulation outcomes are evaluated with the outcomes offered in the other publications and deemed competitive in terms of the features of the solution. The offered chaotic Rao-2 algorithm outperforms the basic Rao-2 algorithm regarding convergence velocity and solution competence. Furthermore, a test is performed to validate the statistical worth of the offered chaotic Rao-2-inspired solver. The offered chaotic Rao-2 algorithm presents a vigorous and simple solution for the OPF framework under various objectives.

Dynamic Electric Dispatch for Wind Power Plants: A New Automatic Controller System Using Evolutionary Algorithms

In this paper, we use an evolutionary swarm intelligence approach to build an automatic electric dispatch controller for an offshore wind power plant (WPP). The optimal power flow (OPF) problem for this WPP is solved by the Canonical Differential Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (C-DEEPSO). In this paper, C-DEEPSO works as a control system for reactive sources in energy production. The control operation takes place in a daily energy dispatch, scheduled into 15 min intervals and resulting in 96 operating test scenarios. As the nature of the optimization problem is dynamic, a fine-tuning of the initialization parameters of the optimization algorithm is performed at each dispatch interval. Therefore, a version of the C-DEEPSO algorithm has been built to automatically learn the best set of initialization parameters for each scenario. For this, we have coupled C-DEEPSO with the irace tool (an extension of the iterated F-race (I/F-Race)) by using inferential statistic techniques. The experiments carried out showed that the methodology employed here is robust and able to tackle this OPF-like modeling. Moreover, the methodology works as an automatic control system for a dynamic schedule operation.
