A hybrid GEP and WOA approach to estimate the optimal penetration rate of TBM in granitic rock mass

Multi-step real-time prediction of hard-rock TBM penetration rate combining temporal convolutional network and squeeze-and-excitation block

Accurate penetration rate prediction enhances rock-breaking efficiency and reduces disc cutter damage in tunnel boring machine (TBM) construction. However, this process faces significant challenges such as the high uncertainty of ground conditions and the complexity of maintaining optimal TBM operation in long and large tunnels. To address these challenges, we propose TCN-SENet++, a novel hybrid multistep real-time penetration rate prediction model that combines a temporal convolutional network (TCN) and a squeeze-and-excitation (SENet) block for aided tunneling. This study aims to demonstrate the application of TCN-SENet++, as well as other models such as RNN, LSTM, GRU, and TCN, for TBM penetration rate prediction. The model was developed using actual datasets collected from the Yin-Song diversion project. We employ a 30-s time step to predict the future time steps of the penetration rate (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th). The features that influence the penetration rate, such as the cutterhead torque, thrust, and cutterhead power, were considered. A comparative analysis using the mean absolute error and mean squared error revealed that the TCN-SENet++ model outperformed the other models, including RNN, LSTM, GRU, TCN, and TCN-SENet+. In comparison, TCN-SENet++ achieved average MSE reductions of 18%, 6%, 3%, 1%, and 2%, respectively. The TCN-SENet++ model demonstrated fewer errors in the new project, validating its effectiveness and suitability for real-time penetration rate prediction in TBM construction.

Estimation of Blast-Induced Peak Particle Velocity through the Improved Weighted Random Forest Technique

Blasting is one of the primary aspects of the mining operations, and its environmental effects interfere with the safety of lives and property. Therefore, it is essential to accurately estimate the environmental impact of blasting, i.e., peak particle velocity (PPV). In this study, a regular random forest (RF) model was developed using 102 blasting samples that were collected from an open granite mine. The model inputs included six parameters, while the output is PPV. Then, to improve the performance of the regular RF model, five techniques, i.e., refined weights based on the accuracy of decision trees and the optimization of three metaheuristic algorithms, were proposed to enhance the predictive capability of the regular RF model. The results showed that all refined weighted RF models have better performance than the regular RF model. In particular, the refined weighted RF model using the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) showed the best performance. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis results revealed that the powder factor (PF) has the most significant impact on the prediction of the PPV in this project case, which means that the magnitude of the PPV can be managed by controlling the size of the PF.

Classification of Imbalanced Travel Mode Choice to Work Data Using Adjustable SVM Model

The investigation of travel mode choice is an essential task in transport planning and policymaking for predicting travel demands. Typically, mode choice datasets are imbalanced and learning from such datasets is challenging. This study deals with imbalanced mode choice data by developing an algorithm (SVMAK) based on a support vector machine model and the theory of adjusting kernel scaling. The kernel function’s choice was evaluated by applying the likelihood-ratio chi-square and weighting measures. The empirical assessment was performed on the 2017 National Household Travel Survey–California dataset. The performance of the SVMAK model was compared with several other models, including neural networks, XGBoost, Bayesian Network, standard support vector machine model, and some SVM-based models that were previously developed to handle the imbalanced datasets. The SVMAK model outperformed these models, and in some cases improved the accuracy of the minority class classification. For the majority class, the accuracy improvement was substantial. This algorithm can be applied to other tasks in the transport planning domain that deal with uneven data distribution.

Stacking Ensemble Tree Models to Predict Energy Performance in Residential Buildings

In this research, a new machine-learning approach was proposed to evaluate the effects of eight input parameters (surface area, relative compactness, wall area, overall height, roof area, orientation, glazing area distribution, and glazing area) on two output parameters, namely, heating load (HL) and cooling load (CL), of the residential buildings. The association strength of each input parameter with each output was systematically investigated using a variety of basic statistical analysis tools to identify the most effective and important input variables. Then, different combinations of data were designed using the intelligent systems, and the best combination was selected, which included the most optimal input data for the development of stacking models. After that, various machine learning models, i.e., XGBoost, random forest, classification and regression tree, and M5 tree model, were applied and developed to predict HL and CL values of the energy performance of buildings. The mentioned techniques were also used as base techniques in the forms of stacking models. As a result, the XGboost-based model achieved a higher accuracy level (HL: coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.998; CL: R2 = 0.971) with a lower system error (HL: root mean square error, RMSE = 0.461; CL: RMSE = 1.607) than the other developed models in predicting both HL and CL values. Using new stacking-based techniques, this research was able to provide alternative solutions for predicting HL and CL parameters with appropriate accuracy and runtime.
