Abstract
Outcomes of patients with hematologic malignancies requiring ICU care for critical illness are suboptimal and represent a major unmet need in this population. We present data from a dedicated haematology oncology setting including 63 patients with a median age of 60 years admitted to the ICU for critical illness with organ dysfunction. The most common underlying diagnosis was multiple myeloma (30%) followed by acute myeloid leukemia (25%). Chemotherapy had been initiated for 90.7% patients before ICU admission. The most common indication for ICU care was respiratory failure (36.5%) and shock (17.5%) patients. Evidence of sepsis was present in 44 (69%) patients. After shifting to ICU, 32 (50%) patients required inotropic support and 18 (28%) required invasive mechanical ventilation. After a median of 5 days of ICU stay, 43.1% patients had died, most commonly due to multiorgan dysfunction. Risk of mortality was higher with involvement of more than two major organs (p = .001), underlying AML (p = .001), need for mechanical ventilation (p = .001) and high inotrope usage (p = .004). Neutropenia was not associated with mortality. Our study indicates high rates of short term mortality and defines prognostic factors which can be used to prognosticate patients and establish goals of care. Abstract
Patients with hematologic malignancies (HMs) have a significantly elevated risk of mortality compared to other cancer patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). The prognostic impact of numerous poor outcome indicators has changed, and research has yielded conflicting results. This study aims to determine the ICU and hospital outcomes and risk factors that predict the prognosis of critically ill patients with HMs. In this retrospective study, conducted at a referral hospital in Taiwan, 213 adult patients with HMs who were admitted to the medical ICU were evaluated. We collected clinical data upon hospital and ICU admission. Using a multivariate regression analysis, the predictors of ICU and hospital mortality were assessed. Then, a scoring system (Hospital outcome of critically ill patients with Hematological Malignancies (HHM)) was built to predict hospital outcomes. Most HMs (76.1%) were classified as high grade, and more than one-third of patients experienced a relapsed or refractory disease. The ICU and hospital mortality rates were 55.9% and 71.8%, respectively. Moreover, the disease severity was high (median Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score: 11 and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE II) score: 28). The multivariate analysis revealed that high-grade HMs, invasive mechanical ventilation requirement, renal replacement therapy initiation in the ICU, and a high SOFA score correlated with ICU mortality. Furthermore, a higher HHM score predicted hospital mortality. This study demonstrates that ICU mortality primarily correlates with the severity of organ dysfunction, whereas the disease status markedly influences hospital outcomes. Furthermore, the HHM score significantly predicts hospital mortality.

Outcomes of patients with hematologic malignancies and COVID-19: a report from the ASH Research Collaborative Data Hub. Blood Adv 2020; 4:5966-5975. Abstract
The ASH Research Collaborative COVID-19 Registry for Hematology collects data on patients with hematologic diseases and COVID-19. Among the first 250 patients, mortality was 28%, and in several patients, a decision was made to forgo intensive care unit admission.
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an illness resulting from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that emerged in late 2019. Patients with cancer, and especially those with hematologic malignancies, may be at especially high risk of adverse outcomes, including mortality resulting from COVID-19 infection. The ASH Research Collaborative COVID-19 Registry for Hematology was developed to study features and outcomes of COVID-19 infection in patients with underlying blood disorders, such as hematologic malignancies. At the time of this report, data from 250 patients with blood cancers from 74 sites around the world had been entered into the registry. The most commonly represented malignancies were acute leukemia (33%), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (27%), and myeloma or amyloidosis (16%). Patients presented with a myriad of symptoms, most frequently fever (73%), cough (67%), dyspnea (50%), and fatigue (40%). Use of COVID-19–directed therapies, such as hydroxychloroquine (n = 76) or azithromycin (n = 59), was common. Overall mortality was 28%. Patients with a physician-estimated prognosis from the underlying hematologic malignancy of <12 months at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis and those with relapsed/refractory disease experienced a higher proportion of moderate/severe COVID-19 disease and death. In some instances, death occurred after a decision was made to forgo intensive care unit admission in favor of a palliative approach. Taken together, these data support the emerging consensus that patients with hematologic malignancies experience significant morbidity and mortality resulting from COVID-19 infection. Batch submissions from sites with high incidence of COVID-19 infection are planned to support future analyses.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Patients with hematological malignancies (HM) require intensive chemotherapy with curative intent, especially in case of AML that results in more frequent admissions to Intensive Care Units (ICU). Due to our knowledge, this study is the first multicenter retrospective analysis in Polish population. METHODS A total of 200 patients with HM hospitalized in 4 Polish hematological centers. Data concerning clinical indices and outcomes during admission and ICU stay were collected retrospectively. RESULTS The most common hematological malignancy was acute leukemia (55%). The main cause of ICU admission was respiratory failure (88.5%), often accompanied by sepsis (58.5%) and acute renal failure (51.5%). In patients with hematological malignancies, the following factors were associated with ICU mortality: prolonged ICU stay (odd ratio [OR] = 6.98, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.38-35.33, χ2 = 5.61, p = 0.02), the presence of acute respiratory failure (odd ratio [OR] = 5.35, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-28.46, χ2 = 3.93, p = 0.04), and the need for renal replacement therapy (odd ratio [OR] = 8.75, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23-62.11, χ2 = 4.78, p = 0.03). There were following associations with in-hospital mortality in patients with hematological malignancies: prolonged ICU stay (odd ratio [OR] = 10.12, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.85-55.37, χ2 = 7.21, p = 0.008), the presence of acute respiratory failure (odd ratio [OR] =5.24, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.36-20.16, χ2 = 5.87, p = 0.02), the need for catecholamine support (odd ratio [OR] =3.43, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06-11.05, χ2 = 4.32, p = 0.04), and renal replacement therapy (odd ratio [OR] =5.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-26.92, χ2 = 4.59, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS We have demonstrated that ICU and in-hospital mortalities among patients with hematological malignancies are still poor, but easier access to the intensive care unit and close cooperation between hematologists and intensivists may improve outcomes. We have found that acute failure of key organs (acute respiratory failure, end-stage renal failure requires renal replacement therapy) and length of ICU stay (but probably no comorbidities and illness severity) may have impact on mortality (both ICU and in-hospital).

Short- and long-term outcomes in onco-hematological patients admitted to the intensive care unit with classic factors of poor prognosis. Oncotarget 2017; 7:22427-38. Abstract
Although the overall mortality of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) with hematological malignancy has decreased over the years, some groups of patients still have low survival rates. We performed a monocentric retrospective study including all patients with hematological malignancy in a ten-year period, to identify factors related to the outcome for the whole cohort and for patients with allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), neutropenia, or those requiring invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). A total of 418 patients with acute leukemia (n=239; 57%), myeloma (n=69; 17%), and lymphoma (n=53; 13%) were studied. Day-28 and 1-year mortality were 49% and 72%, respectively. The type of disease was not associated with outcome. The disease status was independentlty associated with 1-year mortality only. Independent predictors of day-28 mortality were IMV, renal replacement therapy (RRT), and performance status. For allogeneic HSCT recipients (n=116), neutropenic patients (n=124) and patients requiring IMV (n=196), day-28 and 1-year mortality were 52%, 54%, 74% and 81%, 78%, 87%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that IMV and RRT for allogeneic HSCT recipients, performance status and IMV for neutropenic patients, and RRT for patients requiring IMV were independently associated with short-term mortality (p<0.05).These results suggest that IMV is the strongest predictor of mortality in hematological patients admitted to ICUs, whereas allogeneic HSCT and neutropenia do not worsen their short-term outcome.

Abstract
Background Accurate prognosticating is needed when patients are nearing the end of life to ensure appropriate treatment decisions, and facilitate palliative care provision and transitioning to terminal care. People with a hematological malignancy characteristically experience a fluctuating illness trajectory leading to difficulties with prognosticating. The aim of this review was to identify current knowledge regarding ‘bedside’ prognostic factors in the final 3 months of life for people with a hematological malignancy associated with increased risk of mortality. Methods A systematic review of the literature was performed across: PubMed; CINAHL; PsycINFO; and Cochrane with set inclusion criteria: 1) prognostic cohort studies; 2) published 2004–2014; 3) sample ≥ 18 years; 4) >50% sample had a hematological malignancy; 5) reported ‘bedside’ prognostic factors; 6) median survival of <3 months; and 7) English language. Quality appraisal was performed using the Quality In Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Results are reported in line with PRISMA guidelines. Results The search returned 4860 studies of which 28 met inclusion criteria. Twenty-four studies were rated moderate quality, three were high quality and one study was deemed to be of low quality. Most studies were set in the ICU (n = 24/28) and were retrospective (n = 25/28). Forty ‘bedside’ prognostic factors were identified as associated with increased risk of mortality encompassing the following broad categories: 1) demographics; 2) physiological complications or conditions; 3) disease characteristics; 4) laboratory blood values; and 5) interventions. Conclusions The literature on prognosticating in the final months of life was predominantly focused on people who had experienced acute physiological deterioration and were being treated aggressively in the in-patient setting. A significant gap in the literature exists for people who are treated less aggressively or are on a palliative trajectory. Findings did not report on, or confirm the significance of, many of the key prognostic factors associated with increased risk of mortality at the end of life in the solid tumour population, demonstrating key differences in the two populations. Abstract
Owing to the nature of acute illness and adverse effects derived from intensive chemotherapy, patients with hematological malignancies (HM) who are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) often present with poor prognosis. However, with advances in life-sustaining therapies and close collaborations between hematologists and intensive care specialists, the prognosis for these patients has improved substantially. Many studies from different countries have examined the prognostic factors of these critically ill HM patients. However, there has not been an up-to-date review on this subject, and very few studies have focused on the prognosis of patients with HM admitted to the ICU in Asian countries. Herein, we aim to explore the current situation and prognostic factors in patients with HM admitted to ICU, mainly focusing on studies published in the last 10 years.

Abstract
Background This retrospective, multicenter study aimed to reveal risk predictors for mortality in the intensive care unit (ICU) as well as survival after ICU discharge in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) requiring treatment in the ICU. Methods and Results Multivariate analysis of data for 187 adults with AML treated in the ICU in one institution revealed the following as independent prognostic factors for death in the ICU: arterial oxygen partial pressure below 72 mmHg, active AML and systemic inflammatory response syndrome upon ICU admission, and need for hemodialysis and mechanical ventilation in the ICU. Based on these variables, we developed an ICU mortality score and validated the score in an independent cohort of 264 patients treated in the ICU in three additional tertiary hospitals. Compared with the Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II, the Logistic Organ Dysfunction (LOD) score, and the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, our score yielded a better prediction of ICU mortality in the receiver operator characteristics (ROC) analysis (AUC = 0.913 vs. AUC = 0.710 [SAPS II], AUC = 0.708 [LOD], and 0.770 [SOFA] in the training cohort; AUC = 0.841 for the developed score vs. AUC = 0.730 [SAPSII], AUC = 0.773 [LOD], and 0.783 [SOFA] in the validation cohort). Factors predicting decreased survival after ICU discharge were as follows: relapse or refractory disease, previous allogeneic stem cell transplantation, time between hospital admission and ICU admission, time spent in ICU, impaired diuresis, Glasgow Coma Scale <8 and hematocrit of ≥25% at ICU admission. Based on these factors, an ICU survival score was created and used for risk stratification into three risk groups. This stratification discriminated distinct survival rates after ICU discharge. Conclusions Our data emphasize that although individual risks differ widely depending on the patient and disease status, a substantial portion of critically ill patients with AML benefit from intensive care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advances in treatment of sarcoma patients has prolonged survival but has led to increased disease- or treatment-related complications resulting in greater number of admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU). Survival and long-term outcome information about such critically ill patients with sarcoma is unknown. METHODS The primary objective of the study was to determine the ICU and post-ICU survival rates of critically ill sarcoma patients. Secondary objectives included determining the modifiable and non-modifiable predictors of poor survival. We performed a retrospective chart review of sarcoma patients admitted to the ICU at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between January 1, 2005, and December 31, 2012. Main outcome measures were ICU mortality, in-hospital mortality and 1, 2, and 6-month survival rates. Covariates such as histological diagnosis, disease characteristics, chemotherapy use, Charlson comorbidity index, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores, and clinical findings leading to ICU admission were analyzed for their effects on survival. RESULTS We identified 172 admissions over the 8-year study period hat met our inclusion criteria. The study population was 45.9 % males with a median age of 52 years. The most common sarcoma subgroups were high-grade unclassified sarcoma (25 %) and bone tumors (17.4 %). The ICU mortality rate was 23.3 % (95 % confidence interval [CI], 16.9-29.6 %), and an additional 6.4 % of patients died before hospital discharge (95 % CI, 22.9-37.1 %). 6-month OS rates were 41 %. The median SOFA scores on admission were 6 (inter quartile range (IQR), 3.5-9) in ICU survivors and 10 (IQR, 6.5-14) in ICU non-survivors. Increase in SOFA scores ≥6 led to poor outcomes (ICU survival 13.3 %, OS 6.7 %). Charlson comorbidity index (HR 1.139, 95 % CI 1.023-1.268, p = 0.02) and discharge SOFA scores (HR 1.210, 95 % CI 1.141-1.283, p < 0.0001) correlated with overall survival. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that patients that are admitted to the ICU for respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, septic shock, acute renal failure or acidosis and also have a high SOFA score with subsequent worsening in the ICU have poor prognosis. Based on the retrospective data which needs further validation we can recommend that judicious approach should be taken in patients with predictors of poor survival before subjecting them to aggressive treatment.

Abstract
Acute respiratory failure (ARF) is the leading cause of intensive care unit admission in patients with hematologic malignancies and is associated with a high mortality. The main causes of ARF are bacterial and opportunistic pulmonary infections and noninfectious lung disorders. Management consists of a systematic clinical evaluation aimed at identifying the most likely cause, which in turn determines the best first-line empirical treatments. The need for mechanical ventilation is a major determinant of prognosis. Beneficial outcomes have been demonstrated with early use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in selected patients with hematologic malignancies. However, most of these studies did not control the time between onset of ARF to NIV implementation nor accounted for the etiology of ARF or the presence of associated organ dysfunction at the time of NIV initiation. Moreover, the benefits demonstrated with NIV in these patients were derived from studies with high mortality rates of intubated patients. Additional studies are therefore warranted to determine the appropriate patients with hematologic malignancy and ARF who may benefit from prophylactic or curative NIV.

Abstract
Up to 25% of patients with profound neutropenia lasting for >10 days develop lung infiltrates, which frequently do not respond to broad-spectrum antibacterial therapy. While a causative pathogen remains undetected in the majority of cases, Aspergillus spp., Pneumocystis jirovecii, multi-resistant Gram-negative pathogens, mycobacteria or respiratory viruses may be involved. In at-risk patients who have received trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) prophylaxis, filamentous fungal pathogens appear to be predominant, yet commonly not proven at the time of treatment initiation. Pathogens isolated from blood cultures, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) or respiratory secretions are not always relevant for the etiology of pulmonary infiltrates and should therefore be interpreted critically. Laboratory tests for detecting Aspergillus galactomannan, β-D-glucan or DNA from blood, BAL or tissue samples may facilitate the diagnosis; however, most polymerase chain reaction assays are not yet standardized and validated. Apart from infectious agents, pulmonary side-effects from cytotoxic drugs, radiotherapy or pulmonary involvement by the underlying malignancy should be included into differential diagnosis and eventually be clarified by invasive diagnostic procedures. Pre-emptive treatment with mold-active systemic antifungal agents improves clinical outcome, while other microorganisms are preferably treated only when microbiologically documented. High-dose TMP/SMX is first choice for treatment of Pneumocystis pneumonia, while cytomegalovirus pneumonia is treated primarily with ganciclovir or foscarnet in most patients. In a considerable number of patients, clinical outcome may be favorable despite respiratory failure, so that intensive care should be unrestrictedly provided in patients whose prognosis is not desperate due to other reasons.

Abstract
The prognosis for patients with hematological malignancies (HMs) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) is poor. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical characteristics and hospital outcomes of critically ill patients with HMs admitted to an oncological ICU. This is a prospective, observational cohort study. A total of 102 patients with HMs admitted to ICU from January 2008 to April 2011 were included. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with hospital mortality. During the study period, 3,776 patients with HM were admitted to the Department of Hematology of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología located in Mexico City, Mexico. After being evaluated by the intensivist, 102 (2.68 %) patients were admitted to the ICU. The ICU mortality rates for patients who had two or less organ system failures and for those with three or more organ system dysfunctions were 20 % (5/25) and 70.1 % (54/77), respectively (P < 0.0001). A multivariate analysis identified independent prognostic factors of in-hospital death as neutropenia at the time of ICU admission (odds ratio (OR), 4.24; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 1.36-13.19, P = 0.012), the need for vasopressors (OR, 4.49; 95 % CI, 1.07-18.79, P = 0.040), need for invasive mechanical ventilation (OR, 4.49; 95 % CI, 1.07-18.79, P = 0.040), and serum creatinine >106 μmol/L (OR, 3.21; 95 % CI, 1.05-9.85, P = 0.041). The ICU and hospital mortality rates were 46.1 and 57.8 %, respectively. The independent prognostic factors of in-hospital death were the need for invasive mechanical ventilation, the need for vasopressors, serum creatinine >106 μmol/L, and neutropenia at the time of ICU admission.

Abstract
More than 18,000 autolgous transplantation were performed in Europe in the year 2009. It as a routine procedure in experienced centres. Even if there is a low mortality rate, infections are a major issue after transplantation, occurring in more than 60 % of the patients. In this review we discuss all aspects of infections after autologous stem transplantation, including epidemiology, diagnostics, therapeutic algorithms, prophylaxis and supportive therapy.

Abstract
The aim was to demonstrate the performance of a modified version of the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score to predict mortality in medical and surgical patients with cancer. We performed an electronic retrospective review of databases. We included adult patients with cancer admitted into a 53-bed ICU over 28 months. We electronically calculated a modified SOFA (mSOFA) score at admission. A majority of the patients were admitted into the surgical ICU. Of 328 nonsurvivors, 85.1 per cent were medical patients and only 14.9 per cent surgical patients. The mean admission mSOFA scores for medical and surgical patients were 4.7 +/- 3.2 and 1.7 +/- 1.9, respectively. The overall area under the curve (AUC) of the mSOFA score was 0.84. The AUCs for medical and surgical patients were 0.72 and 0.78, respectively. Our results demonstrate that electronic assessment of mSOFA score has potential in resource allocation decisions as well as in critical care outreach programs.

Abstract
A literature review was conducted to ascertain the prognosis of patients with haematological malignancies admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and to identify any factors that could be shown to influence outcome. Studies that examined outcomes among patients with haematological malignancy admitted to ICU were evaluated. Pooled outcome data relating to ICU, hospital and six-month mortality were compiled. A qualitative assessment of the evidence relating to putative determinants of prognosis was made. Observational studies examining outcomes among over 10,000 haematological malignancy patients admitted to the ICU were identified. Approximately 40% of such patients survived until hospital discharge. The principle determinants of short-term survival would appear to be related to the severity of the acute illness and the consequent physiological derangement or organ system dysfunction. In the longer term, factors relating to the prognosis of the underlying malignancy appear to be important.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prognosis of patients with haematological malignancies who are admitted to the ICU is generally poor. In order to optimize care, it is important to be able to determine which patients are most likely to benefit from continuation of treatment after ICU admission. METHODS Data of 86 patients with a haematological malignancy consecutively admitted to the ICU of Maastricht University Medical Centre were examined in a retrospective cohort study in order to identify clinically useful prognostic parameters. RESULTS ICU mortality was 56% and in-hospital mortality was 65%. Non-survivors had higher APACHE-II and SOFA scores compared with survivors (32±8.0 versus 25±6.5 and 11.5±3.1 versus 8.5±3.0, respectively). The mortality rate was significantly higher in patients with an increasing SOFA score (≥2 points) compared with patients with an unchanged or decreasing SOFA score (72% versus 58% and 21%, respectively). Mortality was also higher in patients requiring invasive mechanical ventilation or inotropic/vasopressor therapy. CONCLUSION The mortality rate among patients with haematological malignancies who are admitted to the ICU is high and mainly associated with the severity of illness, as reflected by more severe and worsening organ failure and a need for mechanical ventilation or inotropic/vasopressor therapy. Several factors appear to be associated with a poor outcome, but no absolute predictors of mortality could be identified, although the results suggest that changes in the SOFA score during the stay in the ICU can be helpful in the decision making about the continuation or discontinuation of treatment.

Abstract
Critical care for patients with cancer was once considered inappropriate because of a perceived poor prognosis for their long-term survival. Three decades of research has yielded evidence to support the use of critical care resources for many patients with cancer. A methodical approach to triage and evaluation of critically ill patients regardless of baseline medical diagnosis, coupled with an appreciation for the likely prognosis of their current cancer, is most likely to yield the fairest and most accurate appropriation of care. No clinical scoring system has emerged that accurately defines the severity of illness and likelihood for survival in patients with cancer. This article reviews the studies that have attempted to apply mortality prediction scales or scoring systems to these patients. Clinical judgment with incorporation of consensus opinions from the literature should be used to develop admission or restriction criteria for intensive care of patients with cancer.

Abstract
Introduction Patients with haematological malignancy admitted to intensive care have a high mortality. Adverse prognostic factors include the number of organ failures, invasive mechanical ventilation and previous bone marrow transplantation. Severity-of-illness scores may underestimate the mortality of critically ill patients with haematological malignancy. This study investigates the relationship between admission characteristics and outcome in patients with haematological malignancies admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and assesses the performance of three severity-of-illness scores in this population. Methods A secondary analysis of the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) Case Mix Programme Database was conducted on admissions to 178 adult, general ICUs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland between 1995 and 2007. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with hospital mortality. The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score, Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS) II and ICNARC score were evaluated for discrimination (the ability to distinguish survivors from nonsurvivors); and the APACHE II, SAPS II and ICNARC mortality probabilities were evaluated for calibration (the accuracy of the estimated probability of survival). Results There were 7,689 eligible admissions. ICU mortality was 43.1% (3,312 deaths) and acute hospital mortality was 59.2% (4,239 deaths). ICU and hospital mortality increased with the number of organ failures on admission. Admission factors associated with an increased risk of death were bone marrow transplant, Hodgkin's lymphoma, severe sepsis, age, length of hospital stay prior to intensive care admission, tachycardia, low systolic blood pressure, tachypnoea, low Glasgow Coma Score, sedation, PaO2:FiO2, acidaemia, alkalaemia, oliguria, hyponatraemia, hypernatraemia, low haematocrit, and uraemia. The ICNARC model had the best discrimination of the three scores analysed, as assessed by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.78, but all scores were poorly calibrated. APACHE II had the highest accuracy at predicting hospital mortality, with a standardised mortality ratio of 1.01. SAPS II and the ICNARC score both underestimated hospital mortality. Conclusions Increased hospital mortality is associated with the length of hospital stay prior to ICU admission and with severe sepsis, suggesting that, if appropriate, such patients should be treated aggressively with early ICU admission. A low haematocrit was associated with higher mortality and this relationship requires further investigation. The severity-of-illness scores assessed in this study had reasonable discriminative power, but none showed good calibration.
