Abstract
BACKGROUND Parents of children with cancer face bio-psycho-social-spiritual concerns which can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL). We examined the impact of an integrative oncology (IO) intervention on QoL-related concerns among parents of children in a pediatric hematology-oncology department. MEASURES The study was prospective, controlled, nonrandomized and patient-preferenced. Parents of children recently (≤6 weeks) diagnosed with cancer were assessed using the measure yourself concerns and wellbeing (MYCaW), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30). Parents in both groups were reassessed after three weeks. INTERVENTION An IO consultation was provided, with training in daily relaxation-breathing and manual treatments, and guidance on herbal medicine. OUTCOMES Of 68 parents consenting to participate, 37 (54%) underwent the intervention with 31 serving as controls. Multivariate analysis found the IO intervention group to contain more Hebrew-speakers (OR=5.96, 95% CI=1.3-27.3, P=0.022); females (OR=5.23, 95% CI=1.1-24.8, P=0.038); and report pain (OR=1.2, 95% CI=1.0-1.4, P=0.045) and impaired appetite on ESAS (OR=1.23, 95% CI=1.01-1.48, P=0.034) when compared to controls. Only the intervention group showed improved baseline-to-3-week scores for physical functioning (P<0.001), cognitive functioning (0=0.018) and fatigue on EORTC (P<0.001); and for ESAS appetite (P<0.001) and anxiety (P=0.02). ESAS sleep increased only in controls (P=0.029). CONCLUSIONS/LESSONS LEARNED IO interventions in pediatric hematology-oncology addressing QoL-related concerns among parents are feasible, potentially increasing predominantly physical symptoms and functioning. Further research is needed to confirm these "real-world" clinical outcomes, and the role of IO in "Caring for the Caregiver".

Abstract
PURPOSE WeChat-based education and care program serves as a promising nursing method for relieving mental stress in parents of pediatric patients. This study purposed to explore the influence of the WeChat education and care program (WECP) on mental health, insomnia, and general state of health in parents of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. METHODS Totally, 146 parents of 73 primary pediatric ALL patients were randomized into the WECP group (74 parents of 37 patients) and standard care (SC) group (72 parents of 36 patients) to receive a 6-month corresponding intervention. Self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale (SDS), Athens insomnia scale (AIS), and 12-item general health questionnaire (GHQ-12) were assessed in parents of patients. RESULTS SAS scores at the third month (M3) (P = 0.041) and M6 (P = 0.032) were reduced in WECP group versus SC group. SAS-defined anxiety rate at M6 (P = 0.035) was declined in WECP group versus SC group. SDS score at M6 was descended in WECP group versus SC group (P = 0.024). However, there was no discrepancy in SDS-defined depression rate at any time point between groups (all P > 0.05). AIS scores at M1 (P = 0.015) and M6 (P = 0.021), as well as GHQ-12 scores at M3 (P = 0.007) and M6 (P = 0.001) were decreased in WECP group versus SC group. By subgroup analyses, WECP exhibited good effects at M6 in mothers, but not in fathers. CONCLUSION WECP is a feasible and efficacy intervention to improve mental stress and health status among parents of pediatric ALL patients, especially in mothers.

Elevated serum platelet count inhibits the effects of brain functional changes on cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study. Front Aging Neurosci 2023; 15:1088095. Abstract
ObjectiveBrain function remodeling has been observed in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and is closely associated with cognitive performance. However, it is not clear if this relationship is influenced by complete blood counts. This study investigated the role of complete blood counts in the relationship between brain function and cognitive performance.MethodsTwenty-two MCI patients and eighteen controls were enrolled. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. A neuropsychological battery [Mini-Mental Status Examination, Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), Symbol Digit Modalities Test, Boston Naming Test (BNT), Shape Trails Test B (STT-B), Rey Complex Figure Test (RCFT), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and Hamilton Depression Scale] was used to assess cognitive function, and MCI patients received complete blood counts tests for red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells, hemoglobin (HGB), monocytes, and platelet counts (PLT).ResultsCompared with controls, MCI patients demonstrated significantly decreased amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) values in the left dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, left post orbitofrontal cortex, right medial superior frontal gyrus, right insula, and left triangular inferior frontal gyrus. In the MCI group, there were associations between ALFF values of the left hippocampus (HIP.L) and AVLT (p = 0.003) and AVLT-N5 scores (p = 0.001); ALFF values of the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG.R) and BNT scores (p = 0.044); ALFF values of the right superior temporal gyrus (STG.R) and BNT scores (p = 0.022); ALFF values of the left precuneus (PCUN.L) and STT-B time (p = 0.012); and ALFF values of the left caudate nucleus (CAU.L) and RCFT-time (p = 0.036). Moreover, the HAMA scores were negatively correlated with RBC and HGB levels, and positively correlated with monocyte count. The PLT count was positively correlated with STT-B time. Additionally, high PLT count inhibited the effect of ALFF values of the PCUN. L on STT-B performance in MCI patients (p = 0.0207).ConclusionALFF values of the HIP. L, SMG.R, STG. R, PCUN.L, and CAU. L were associated with decreased memory, language, executive function, and visuospatial ability in MCI patients. Notably, elevated PLT count could inhibit the effect of brain functional changes in the PCUN.L on executive function in MCI patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood cancer affects approximately 600,000 children and adolescents worldwide, and chemotherapy is the main form of treatment. However, chemotherapy treatment causes feelings of fear and anxiety especially in the patient's caregiver. Thus, strategies that help the health education process directed towards caregivers are essential for strengthening knowledge and reducing anxiety involved with the beginning of treatment. OBJECTIVE To present a study protocol to evaluate the effect of a multimedia strategy compared to standard guidelines for acquiring knowledge and reducing anxiety among caregivers of children and adolescents with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS A randomized, controlled, single-blind, two-armed clinical trial will be carried out. Fifty-two caregivers of children and adolescents who will start chemotherapy will participate in the study, which will be randomly assigned into Experimental Group, which involves the evaluation of the effect of a multimedia strategy composed of a digital animation film about the chemotherapy process, used as tool for health education or into Control Group, which assesses the effects of standard guidelines, which are verbally provided. Two important moments will be considered to evaluate the results of the intervention (P1, and F1). The primary outcome includes reduced anxiety and the secondary outcome refers to the caregivers' acquisition of knowledge about chemotherapy treatment. EXPECTED RESULTS The results of this randomized clinical trial will have a positive impact on the participants' knowledge acquisition, and will also contribute to reduce anxiety observed at the beginning of treatment related to the caregivers' knowledge deficit. The level of knowledge between groups with anxiety before and after intervention will be compared, highlighting which intervention had the best effect. EVALUATION RECORD Registration: RBR-4wdm8q9-Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials-REBEC (23/03/2022). This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte- UFRN, under CAAE-52597121.9.0000.5537.

A longitudinal evaluation on 3-year change of anxiety and depression, and their risk factors among parents of childhood and adolescence patients with resectable osteosarcoma: A cohort study. Medicine (Baltimore) 2022; 101:e30981. [PMID: 36281181 PMCID: PMC9592357 DOI: 10.1097/md.0000000000030981] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/06/2022] Open
Abstract
Psychological disorders often occur among parents of children with cancer. The current study aimed to explore the longitudinal change of anxiety and depression and their related factors among parents of childhood and adolescence patients with osteosarcoma. A total of 56 childhood and adolescence patients with osteosarcoma who underwent tumor resection and corresponding 104 parents were enrolled. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety (HADS-A) and HADS-Depression (HADS-D) of parents were evaluated at baseline (the day of patients' hospital discharge), 0.5 year, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years. From baseline to the 3rd year, HADS-A (from 8.3 ± 3.1 to 9.4 ± 3.1. P < .001), HADS-D score (from 7.7 ± 3.2 to 8.8 ± 2.9, P = .001), anxiety rate (from 45.2% to 60.6%, P = .038), depression rate (from 38.5% to 57.7%, P = .002) were elevated; meanwhile, anxiety severity (P = .001) and depression severity (P = .001) were also increased. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analysis presented that the role of mother, divorced/widowed marital status, declined family annual income, elevated Enneking stage, and amputation were independently correlated with elevated risk of parents' baseline anxiety or depression (all P < .05). Additionally, declined family annual income, elevated Enneking stage, and amputation were independently correlated with increased risk of parents' 3-year anxiety or depression (all P < .05). Anxiety and depression deteriorate with time in parents of childhood and adolescence patients with osteosarcoma, which are affected by parental role, marital status, family annual income, surgery type, and Enneking stage.
