Authenticity and presence: defining perceived quality in VR experiences

This work expands the existing understanding of quality assessments of VR experiences. Historically, VR quality has focused on presence and immersion, but current discourse emphasizes plausibility and believability as critical for lifelike, credible VR. However, the two concepts are often conflated, leading to confusion. This paper proposes viewing them as subsets of authenticity and presents a structured hierarchy delineating their differences and connections. Additionally, coherence and congruence are presented as complementary quality functions that integrate internal and external logic. The paper considers quality formation in the experience of authenticity inside VR emphasizing that distinguishing authenticity in terms of precise quality features are essential for accurate assessments. Evaluating quality requires a holistic approach across perceptual, cognitive, and emotional factors. This model provides theoretical grounding for assessing the quality of VR experiences.

Teaching and Curriculum of the Preschool Physical Education Major Direction in Colleges and Universities under Virtual Reality Technology

The present work aims to study the influence of virtual reality (VR) technology on the teaching and curriculum of preschool physical education in colleges and universities and establish a virtual teaching model suitable for the college teaching system. The classroom teaching situation of using VR technology in physical training of preschool education major direction in colleges and universities is investigated using the questionnaire survey and teaching experiment. Firstly, the feasibility of applying VR technology to teaching is proved by analyzing the relevant education theories. Secondly, the experimental research method is designed to verify the application effect of VR technology in teaching behavior. Finally, the collected data is sorted out to judge the method’s feasibility. The experimental results demonstrate that 88.0% of the respondents are curious about the application of VR, and 88.6% of the respondents can accept the application of VR in sports dance teaching. Besides, 89.1% claimed that VR technology could enhance students’ understanding of knowledge, and 93.0% thought that VR applications would not interfere with teachers’ explanations. In addition, 80.0% thought that virtual teaching could stimulate students’ interest in learning, 75.0% said that VR application could attract students’ attention, and 63.0% believed that VR application could improve learning efficiency. The preliminary investigation suggests that introducing VR technology can reduce the work intensity of teachers, and the students participating in the survey are optimistic about the application of VR technology in preschool physical education. The formal test based on a t-test indicates that the average score of the experimental group is 3.18 points higher than that of the control group, and there are significant differences in technology between the control group and the experimental group. VR technology can improve students’ technical level, enhance self-confidence, and improve students’ grades. To sum up, this study provides a reference for developing virtual teaching mode and applying VR technology to physical education.

Visual preferences for outdoor space along commercial pedestrian streets under the influence of plant characteristics

Chinese commercial pedestrian streets have developed rapidly in recent years. However, people’s preferences were not sufficiently considered and reflected in the outdoor space and landscape design. With the outdoor landscapes along commercial pedestrian streets in the region south of the Five Ridges as the research objects, this study revealed the public’s different preference evaluations of the landscapes under the reciprocal effects of street characteristics. The main results were as follows: (a) When arcade spaces were available, people prefer streets with taller trees and a lower planting density (50 plants/km or less). Conversely, they preferred streets with relatively low trees (3–6 m), a higher planting density (100–200 plants/km) and two or more vertical layers of plants. People did not like the way that plants are lined in the middle of a street. (b) When there were only one or two types of signage hanging, people preferred streets with a moderate planting density (50–100 plants/km); and there were three or more types of signage hanging, people preferred the plants with low linear density (50 plants/km or less) and that were arranged along one or two sides of the street. (c) When benches were available, people preferred streets with plants on one or both sides, fewer plant colours (one or two kind of colours) and better plant growth status. Specifically, the richer the vertical structure and the bigger number of colours were, the higher the preference score. This study provided design schemes to enhance the visual quality of landscapes by improving landscape characteristics in similar outdoor spaces.

Research on Visual Comfort of Underground Commercial Streets’ Pavement in China on the Basis of Virtual Simulation

As the physical environment of urban underground streets space is continuously perfect, people start to anticipate that underground streets with negative impression could satisfy their psychological comfort appeal as traditional ground streets do. Streets’ pavement is of great significance in creating humanized and comfortable underground spatial atmosphere, and different ground pavements of underground commercial streets display different visual comfort effects. We conducted field investigations of a dozen typical underground streets in eight big cities in China with 42 test samples, and this research obtained the pavement elements’ data of underground commercial streets, built virtual 3D scenes based on orthogonal analysis and virtual reality technology of computer vision, acquired the psychological data of spatial experience through virtual reality test, and analyzed the relationship between six elements (glossiness, roughness, color, dimension, pattern, and collage of ground pavement in underground commercial streets) and spatial visual comfort based on quantitative analysis of experimental data. Results show that, “Cold–hot sensation”, “Glossiness”, and “Collage ordered degree” are chief elements for underground commercial streets’ pavement design. The pavement design featured with neutral color, medium- and large-scale and ordered collage form are the design preference and emphasis for underground commercial streets. Neutral color of underground commercial streets pavement may have a great influence on the recognition of pavement glossiness.

Multiple just-noticeable-difference-based no-reference stereoscopic image quality assessment

Just-noticeable difference (JND) is an important characteristic of the human visual system (HVS), and some established JND models imitating the perception of human eyes already exist. However, their utilization in stereoscopic image quality assessment (SIQA) remains limited. To better simulate how HVS senses 3D images under a no-reference situation, a novel SIQA method based on multiple JND models is proposed in this paper. In our metric, the stereoscopic image pairs are decomposed into multi-scale monocular views and binocular views. Then, texture and edge information of these multi-scale images is extracted. Next, a monocular JND model, a binocular JND model, and a depth JND model are separately applied to the extracted features and the depth map. Finally, these features are synthesized and mapped to objective scores. Through experiment and comparison on public 3D image databases, the proposed method shows a competitive advantage over most state-of-the-art SIQA methods, which indicates that it has a promising prospect in practical applications.
