Inferior vena cava reconstruction with a superficial femoral vein graft after resection of a venous leiomyosarcoma

Leiomyosarcoma is a rare malign neoplasm, representing about 5-7% of all tissue sarcomas while inferior vena cava leiomyosarcomas accounts for only 1%. This paper presents the case of a 74 years old patient that was diagnosed with an abdominal venous leiomyosarcoma involving the inter-renal segment of the inferior vena cava. Tumor was treated by complete in bloc resection. Reconstruction of the vascular axis was performed with an autologous venous tube graft achieved with segments of the right superficial femoral vein. Recurrent free survival and freedom from local or systemic recurrence was observed at 2 years after the intervention thanks to the aggressive radical surgical management.

Primary renal vein leiomyosarcoma: a case report

Primary renal vein leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare tumor with only a few cases reported in the literature. Clinical diagnosis of renal vein LMS can be difficult because of nonspecific symptoms and nonpathognomonic radiological features. The primary treatment modality is radical nephrectomy followed by chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. There is scarcity of literature regarding prognosis because of rarity of tumor; however, tumor size (>3 cm) determines the risk of local recurrence and distant metastasis. Overall prognosis of renal vein LMS is poor. Here, we describe clinical and histopathological features of a 50-year-old female patient with LMS of right renal vein.

Uterine smooth-muscle tumors with unusual growth patterns

Uterine smooth-muscle tumors with unusual growth patterns include a variety of neoplastic lesions characterized histologically by their similarity to adult smooth muscle tissue. The 3 primary neoplasms are intravenous leiomyomatosis, benign metastasizing leiomyoma, and leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata. We present a review of the recent literature along with the clinical and pathologic features of 5 illustrative cases from Mayo Clinic Arizona, Scottsdale.

Vascular smooth muscle tumors: Review of the literature

Vascular smooth muscle tumors are very rare. They can be benign or malign. Intravascular leiomyomatosis is a benign neoplasm that extends through the veins and caries significant morbidity. Angioleiomyoma is a benign neoplasm of the extremities that caries minimal morbidity. Vascular leiomyosarcomas are malign neoplasms derived from vascular smooth cells. They are usually localized to the inferior vena cava, but can also arise from the pulmonary arteries or veins or other peripheral vessels. This study reviews literature for epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management of patients with vascular smooth muscle tumors.
