Abstract
Spinal cord solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), previously known as hemangiopericytoma (HPC), represent exceedingly rare neoplasms. Strategies for their management, such as appropriate follow-up duration, remain controversial due to their propensity for recurrence despite extended periods of quiescence. We report a 51-year-old male presenting with new-onset back pain and gait disturbances, who had undergone gross total resection (GTR) of an SFT within the thoracic spinal cord 19 years ago. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine revealed recurrent tumors at the T7 level within the spinal cord. Subsequent resection achieved GTR. A comprehensive literature review was undertaken to assess the benefits of different resection extents (gross total removal (GTR) vs. subtotal removal (STR)), adjuvant radiation therapy, and the optimal duration of postoperative follow-up. Since 1960, 46 cases, including the present one, have reported recurrent spinal SFT/HPC following GTR and STR. Statistical analyses demonstrated that neither the type of resection nor adjuvant radiation therapy significantly impacted median recurrence-free survival in this cohort. Given their unpredictable behavior, meticulous lifelong follow-up following successful resection appears crucial for managing these tumors effectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) comprise 0.4% of primary central nervous system neoplasms and carry metastatic potential. Disease course and optimal management are largely unknown, and there is currently no literature rigorously describing neurological outcomes in surgically managed SFTs. We present one of the largest craniospinal SFT series, analyze patient outcomes, and extensively review the associated literature. METHODS All surgically managed SFTs at our institution between January 2005 and March 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics, tumor and radiographic features, treatment, and clinical outcomes were collected. Neurological function was quantified using Frankel grade and Neurologic Assessment in Neuro-Oncology scores. Descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis, log-rank test, and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were performed. RESULTS Twenty-one patients satisfied inclusion criteria. Tumor locations included 15 supratentorial, three infratentorial, and three spinal. All patients underwent surgical resection, and 16 (76.2%) underwent radiation. Six (28.6%) patients had tumor recurrence, and three (14.3%) developed metastasis. Younger age and higher postoperative Frankel grade were significantly associated with increased overall survival (OS) ( P = .011, P = .002, respectively). All patients symptomatically improved or stabilized after surgery, and Neurologic Assessment in Neuro-Oncology score ( P = .001) and functional status significantly improved postoperatively (Karnofsky Performance Status: 65.2 ± 25.2 vs 91.4 ± 13.5, P = .001). Sex, adjuvant radiation, and extent of resection were not significantly associated with OS. CONCLUSION SFT of the central nervous system is a rare entity with a variable clinical course. Surgical resection was associated with improved postoperative functional and neurological status. Higher postoperative neurological function was significantly associated with OS. Further studies are warranted to validate a standardized treatment algorithm and investigate the efficacy of adjuvant radiation in SFT.

Abstract
Spinal cord tumors are uncommon, and its multiple representatives not always have pathognomonic characteristics, which poses a challenge for both patients and caring physicians. The radiologist performs an important role in recognizing these tumors, as well as in differentiating between neoplastic and non-neoplastic processes, supporting clinical and surgical decision-making in patients with spinal cord injury. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) assessment, paired with a deep understanding of the various patterns of cord involvement allied to detailed clinical data can provide a diagnosis or significantly limit the differential diagnosis in most cases. In this article, we aim to review the most common and noteworthy intramedullary and extramedullary spinal tumors, as well as some other tumoral mimics, with an emphasis on their MRI morphologic characteristics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are very rare spindle cell neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with largely benign course of disease. Genital SFT's can be managed providing excellent functional and psychological outcomes by timely intervention. CASE PRESENTATION We report the largest and possibly the second only reported case of penile SFT in a 34 year male presenting with a gradually increasing perineal mass with clinically normal appearing phallus. MRI revealed a 9.8 × 3.2 cm soft tissue mass arising from left corpora cavernosae, the mass was excised en-bloc via a perineal approach under spinal anaesthesia. Histopathology revealed spindle cell tumor embedded in myxohyaline stroma along with hyalinized vascular channels demonstrating IHC positivity for CD34 and STAT6. The patient is disease free post 2 years of resection with no sexual or urinary dysfunctions. CONCLUSION Genital SFTs, although rare, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of well-circumscribed, painless, slow growing solid masses and histopathologists must be vigilant of its malignant characteristics.

Abstract
Background:
In the WHO 2016 classification of central nervous system tumors, solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) and hemangiopericytomas (HPC) were considered part of the same category given a shared mutation. Nevertheless, since the new 2021 WHO classification, the term “hemangiopericytoma” has been retired, and SFT is considered an independent pathological entity.
Methods:
We reviewed the literature following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines focusing on the treatment options and prognosis of patients with cervical SFT. We also present a 68-year-old female with spinal intradural extramedullary SFT complicated by diffuse extension into paravertebral tissues and muscles.
Results:
We found 38 cervical SFT in the literature. Patients averaged 47.3 years of age and 47.4% were female. Typically, these lesions spanned two spinal levels resulting in cord compression and most frequently exhibited benign features (i.e., diagnosed as Grade I SFTs). Interestingly, two patients exhibited distant metastases and had initial pathology consistent with grade II SFT.
Conclusion:
SFT of the cervical spine is rare and its management varies according to the histological grade and the clinical behavior, generally warranting surgical excision and adjuvant radiation therapy and/or systemic chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor known for its propensity for recurrence and metastasis. Furthermore, aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign osteolytic lesion. ABC-like areas can be seen in bone tumors that have undergone hemorrhagic cystic change. They are formed by disruptions in the osseous circulation caused by the associated lesion. The most common associated lesions are giant cell tumor, chondroblastoma, osteoblastoma, osteosarcoma, chondromyxoid fibroma, and fibrous dysplasia. There has been no reported case of SFT being the associated lesion. OBSERVATIONS A 42-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of headache and impaired memory. Radiological examinations revealed a 50-mm cystic lesion with multiple fluid levels arising from the left temporal bone. Total resection of the tumor was conducted, and postoperative course was uneventful. Histopathological examination was consistent with SFT with ABC-like change. LESSONS This is the first documented case of SFT with ABC-like change in the cranial fossa. This should be considered a differential diagnosis when treating a lesion in the cranial fossa, such as in this case, to achieve complete resection of the tumor and have close follow-up postoperatively.

Abstract
Background Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) and hemangiopericytoma (HPC) are rare mesenchymal tumors in the central nervous system with a high tendency to relapse, having a significant impact on quality of life (QoL). Due to the rarity of intracranial SFT/HPC, the prognostic factors and optimal treatment remain to be elucidated. Meanwhile, quality of life in patients with intracranial SFT/HPC is seldomly concerned. Thus, we aim to survey about the quality of life and underline some aspects demanding concern in intracranial SFT/HPC treatment through summarizing our case series in recent ten years. Methods Patients with intracranial SFT/HPC who underwent surgical resection from January 2009 to June 2019 were included in the study. Clinical features, such as age, gender, and resection extent, were collected. The EuroQol Five Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D) was used to assess the patients’ quality of life (QoL). Prognosis factors related to progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were also evaluated. Results Thirty-six patients with a mean follow-up period of 61.6 months (range 13–123 months) were included in this study. Sixteen (44.4%) patients achieved gross total resection (GTR). Fourteen patients (38.9%) with tumor progression experienced adjuvant radiotherapy (11.1%) or Gamma Knife surgery (GKS, 27.8%). According to the 2016 WHO classification, there were 6 (16.7%) grade I SFT/HPC, 11 (30.5%) grade II SFT/HPC, and 19 (52.8%) grade III SFT/HPC. The PFS and OS were 29 months (range 4–96 months) and 38 months (range 4–125 months). The median EQ5D-3 L tariff with or without progression was 0.617 (95% CI 0.470–0.756) and 0.939 (95% CI 0.772–0.977) respectively. Gross total resection (GTR, p = 0.024) and grade I SFT/HPC (p = 0.017) were significantly associated with longer PFS. In multivariate analysis, GTR (HR 0.378, 95% CI 0.154–0.927) and adjuvant therapy (HR 0.336, 95% CI 0.118–0.956) result in significantly longer PFS in patients with SFT/HPC. Conclusions Patients underwent GTR and adjuvant therapy had longer PFS. Similarly, patients with lower WHO grade had relatively longer PFS. Therefore, GTR is advocated for the treatment of SFT/HPC. And adjuvant therapy such as GKS could be an alternative treatment for patients who underwent STR or with tumor progression. Further, the QoL decreased in patients with tumor progression and metastasis, and more attention is demanded to the QoL of intracranial SFT/HPC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the imaging features and prognosis of spinal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) of different pathological grades. METHODS The clinical features, computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) images, and follow-up data of 23 patients with SFTs were reviewed. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to their pathological manifestations: grade 1 (n = 3), grade 2 (n = 14), and grade 3 (n = 6). The following imaging features were recorded: location, computed tomography density/MR intensity, enhancement pattern, dural tail sign, adjacent bone remodeling, lobulation, and tumor size. The immunohistochemical (Ki-67/MIB-1) levels were also investigated. All parameters were statistically analyzed between grade 2 and 3 tumors. RESULTS The Ki-67/MIB-1 index was markedly higher in grade 3 tumors than in grade 2 tumors (P < 0.001). All grade 1 lesions appeared hypointense on T2-weighted image, whereas grade 2 and 3 lesions appeared isointense or mildly hyperintense. There were significant differences in enhancement type and osteolytic bony destruction between grade 2 and 3 tumors (P < 0.05). However, no marked differences were found in the distribution of age, sex, location, MR signal, degree of enhancement, compressive bony absorption, dural tail sign, or maximum vertical/traverse diameter ratio. Malignant progression occurred less frequently in patients with grade 2 tumors than in those with grade 3 tumors, but the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Different grades of spinal SFTs have different degrees of proliferation and imaging features, especially grade 3 tumors, which show a heterogeneous enhancement pattern, osteolytic bony destruction, and a higher possibility of recurrence and metastasis.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT/HPC) is a rare neoplasm arising from spindle cells and most commonly arising from pleura. Spinal SFT/HPC is a rare entity; hence, it is not on the top of the differential diagnosis list when a clinician faces a spinal lesion. In the review of the literature, there exist less than 50 case reports of intradural extramedullary SFT/HPC. Here, we present a 54-year-old female patient who underwent subtotal surgical excision of an intradural extramedullary spinal mass pathologically reported to be SFT/HPC and had symptomatic recurrence in the 3rd year of follow-up. Surgical intervention was unachievable and the patient was given 45 Gy to the surgical cavity followed by a 5.4 Gy boost to visible tumor with external radiotherapy. Patient reported significant relief of her symptoms. We aim to contribute to the formation of a treatment algorithm for this rare entity.

Abstract
Background Hemangiopericytoma (HPC), also known as solitary fibrous tumor (SFT), is a type of soft tissue sarcoma with a special aggressive behavior. The HPC/SFT is locally aggressive with possibility of late recurrence locally or distant extraneural metastasis. The most common location of this HPC/SFT is the lower extremities. The HPC/SFT in the central nervous system (CNS) is very rare, and compared with the brain, it is rarer in the spinal region. However, clinicians also lack an overall understanding of the diagnosis of HPC/SFT in the spinal cord. Case presentation In this study, we report a rare case of primary cervical spine HPC/SFT in a 53-year-old woman. Two to three weeks before admission, she experienced pain and numbness in her left upper extremity. After computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a gross total resection was performed. Obvious neurological improvement was observed postoperatively. The pain and numbness in the patient's left upper limb were relieved subsequently. We then reviewed the literature on HPC/SFT, such as its clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, treatment, and follow-up. Conclusions Diagnosis of HPC/SFT relies on magnetic resonance spectroscopy, enhanced CT, and MRI. Postoperative radiotherapy is strongly recommended to reduce the HPC/SFT recurrence. Immunohistochemical analysis can also help in the differential diagnosis. However; early and long-term follow-up is necessary for patients.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare soft tissue neoplasms that can impact the central nervous system (CNS). SFTs comprise <1% of all primary CNS tumors. Here, we describe a rare case of intradural, extramedullary SFT arising within the thoracic spine that was treated with surgical resection. Histological features were evaluated and revealed a highly cellular tumor with positive expression of BCL2, CD34, CD99, and STAT6 proteins that are consistent with a diagnosis of SFT. We discuss the use of surgical intervention for long-term disease control of spinal SFT and evaluate the role of postoperative radiation therapy in management strategies. Lastly, we review the literature reports of intradural, extramedullary SFTs in the thoracic spine. The importance of molecular characterization by histopathology to properly determine diagnosis and prognosis is emphasized.

Abstract
This study aims at identifying predictors of postoperative complications, lesion recurrence, and overall survival in patients undergoing en bloc spondylectomy (EBS) for spinal tumors. For this purpose a systematic review of the literature was conducted and patient-level data extracted. Linear-regression models were calculated to predict postoperative complications, lesion recurrence and overall survival based on age, tumor etiology, surgical approach, mode of resection (extra- vs. intralesional), tumor extension, and number of levels treated. A total of 582 patients were identified from the literature: 45% of females, median age 46 years (5-78); most common etiologies were: sarcoma (46%), metastases (31%), chordoma (11%); surgical approach was anterior (2.5%), combined (45%), and posterior (52.4%); 68.5% underwent EBS; average levels resected were 1.6 (1-6); average survival was 2.6 years; Complication rate was 17.7%. The following significant correlations were found: postoperative complications and resection mode (Odds ratio [OR] 1.35) as well as number of levels treated (OR 1.35); tumor recurrence and resection mode (OR 0.78); 5-year survival and age (OR 0.79), tumor grade (OR 0.65), tumor stage at diagnosis (OR 0.79), and resection mode (OR 1.68). EBS was shown to improve survival, decreases recurrence rates but also has a higher complication rate. Interestingly, the complication rate was not influenced by tumor extension or tumor etiology.

Abstract
Background Spinal hemangiopericytoma is very rare tumors with only a few case reports and one case series. We have treated ten patients between 2004 and 2017 and, thus, present a retrospective review of our patients with a focus on clinical presentation, radiological features, management, pathology, and outcome. Materials and Methods Histopathological data were reviewed in all the cases and clinical and follow-up details were collected from data available in our department. Results There were five males and five females, including one pediatric patient. The mean age of the patients was 34.7 years (Range 12-52 years). Dorsal, cervical, and lumbar spine involvement were found in five, four, and one patient, respectively. Intradural extramedullary tumor was the most common tumor and all patients presented motor weaknesses. Gross total resection of the tumor was done in seven patients and six patients received postoperative radiotherapy. Histopathology showed anaplastic tumor in two cases with high MIB-1 labelling index. Most patients were positive for CD34, vimentin, mic-2, and bcl-2. While the seven patients who underwent gross total resection improved significantly and were self-ambulatory in the follow-up period, two patients who underwent subtotal resection expired due to tumor metastasis. Conclusion Spinal hemangiopericytoma is a very rare tumor. We present a series of cases treated at our institute for the same. Gross total resection is the goal and radiotherapy should be given in case of residual tumor or high-grade tumors. Prognosis is good after gross total excision and functional recovery can be expected in most patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumor with an intermediate tendency to metastasize. Meningeal hemangiopericytoma (HPC), arising in the meningeal membranes, also is considered an SFT. Although SFT is assumed to show an unpredictable behavior, the authors defined some factors associated with its aggressive behavior. METHODS This retrospective study was based on the medical records of 81 SFT patients treated surgically, with the median follow-up period of 59 months. The patients were assigned to three histopathologic groups based on the 2016 WHO classification: group 1 (SFT, 29 patients), group 2 (cellular SFT/hemangiopericytoma [HPC], 27 patients), and group 3 (malignant SFT/anaplastic HPC, 25 patients). RESULTS The SFT histopathologic classification was associated with distant metastasis (DM) (p = 0.007). The multivariate analysis showed that cellular SFT had an independent impact on DM (odds ratio [OR] = 25.42; p = 0.006). Tumor diameter larger than 7.25 cm was correlated with DM (p = 0.010) and the patient's disease-specific death (DSD) (p = 0.007). A 1-cm increase in tumor diameter enhanced the likelihood of metastasis by 1.26 (OR = 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.53). Tumors originating from the central nervous system (CNS) showed a greater tendency toward local recurrence (LR) (p = 0.039) and DM (p = 0.05). Radiotherapy had no association with LR, DM, or DSD. The 10-year disease-specific survival rate was 82.7%. CONCLUSIONS Tumor size and histopathologic diagnosis are the predictors of SFT's aggressive behavior. Cellular SFTs behave as aggressively as the malignant form of the tumor. A SFT grading based on SFT cellularity would contribute to anticipation of its aggressive behavior.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumor in the lumbar spine is a rare pathology with non-specific radiographic features, sometimes resulting in misdiagnosis. Our patient was a 41-year old female who presented with low back pain and bilateral leg pain. Initial MRI showed a lesion misdiagnosed for a sequestered disc at the mid L4-5 level, which was subsequently characterized appropriately and treated surgically, with resolution of symptoms. Pathologic diagnosis was most consistent with a solitary fibrous tumor due to STAT 6 and CD 34 reactivity. Long-term follow up is recommended in these patients to monitor tumor recurrence and evidence of metastasis.

Abstract
Purpose: Primary spinal intradural hemangiopericytoma (HPC) with spinal cord infiltration is rare. The purposes of this study were to investigate the clinical features of intradural HPC with spinal cord infiltration and to explore the related factors affecting tumor recurrence. Methods: We report a case of intramedullary HPC with intramedullary infiltration of the thoracic spine. The relevant literature was searched for with PubMed, and clinical data were extracted from the included studies. Clinical patient data were described and statistically analyzed. Then, Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves were used to describe the relapse-free survival (RFS) of patients in different groups, and the log-rank test was used for evaluation. Results: A total of 11 cases of spinal intradural HPC with spinal cord infiltration were included (including the case described in this report). Further data analysis showed that sex (P = 0.249), age (P = 0.876), tumor location (P = 0.524), and postoperative radiotherapy (P = 0.12) had no significant influence on RFS. The range of tumor resection (P = 0.004) and the WHO grade (P = 0.014) significantly affect the patient RFS. Conclusion: RFS was higher in patients with total tumor resection than in patients with subtotal tumor resection. The patients with lower WHO grade have better RFS. Total tumor resection is the primary objective of surgical treatment of spinal intradural HPC with spinal infiltration. Long-term postoperative follow-up is considered necessary.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with highly recurrence rates after intratumor resection. We report 2 cases of solitary fibrous tumors treated with combination therapy with embolization and en bloc laminectomy using thread saw. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first such report. In the 2 cases, the hypervascular tumors were located in the spinal process and infiltrating the multifidus. Preoperative embolization was useful for decreasing intraoperative bleeding, and using thread saw was an ideal technique for deciding the cut surface height of the pedicle to achieve gross total resection.

Abstract
Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) and hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) had been combined into a single classification until 2016. Recurrence and metastases rates are still understudied, especially for spinal SFT/HPCs. Here, we describe CNS SFT/HPCs and predictors for recurrence, metastases, and death, in spinal and intracranial SFT/HPCs, separately. We collected data from studies with patient-level data available on primary SFT/HPCs from multiple online databases. Clinico-demographic data, surgical outcomes, recurrence, metastases, and death rates were abstracted. We used logistic and Cox regression models to identify predictors for recurrence, metastases, and death for spinal and intracranial SFT/HPCs. Twenty-nine studies (368 patients) were included. Higher histological grade and subtotal resection were associated with recurrence (p values < 0.05), while higher histological grade and recurrence (p values < 0.005) were associated with metastases formation. Time to recurrence (p < 0.005) and metastases (p < 0.001) formation were shorter for spinal SFT/HPCs. Death rates were higher among intracranial SFT/HPC patients (p value = 0.001). Among patients with higher histological grade, rates of metastases formation were different between intracranial and spinal SFT/HPCs. Risk of metastases was higher in the first 5 years from surgery for both intracranial and spinal SFT/HPCs. Meningeal SFT/HPCs patients have high rates of recurrence and metastasis, which occur mostly within the first 5 years after diagnosis. Spinal and intracranial SFT/HPCs show similar behavior, but spinal SFT/HPCs tend to develop metastases and recurrences in a shorter interval of time. Careful follow-up for spinal SFT/HPCs should be considered because spinal cases seem to be slightly more aggressive and require more attention.

Abstract
Spinal solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT/HPC) is a rare mesenchymal malignancy. Radiographically, SFT/HPCs have a mutable appearance, with irregular borders, heterogeneous contrast enhancement, and variable but frequently hypointense T2 signal. We report a series of 5 neurosurgically managed spinal SFT/HPCs treated at our institution, with particular attention to 3 lesions demonstrating marked T2-hypointensity and differential diagnosis for the unusual finding of a "T2 dark" spinal lesion. Retrospective chart review of prospectively maintained surgical database, queried by diagnosis and site codes, 2002-2017. Retrospective radiographic review, with initial screening via keyword search of MR reports for "T2" and "hypointense." Four primary and one metastatic spinal SFT/HPCs were operatively treated during the study period (median follow-up 12 months; range 10-92). Three demonstrated marked T2 hypointensity on preoperative MRI, underwent primary resection-GTR in two, STR in one-and have remained progression-free on routine postoperative surveillance. Two patients with isointense lesions recurred within the follow-up period. Radiographic review identified a host of predominantly rare T2-hypointense lesions, including arteriovenous malformation, disk fragmentations, calcific arachnoiditis, calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis, cavernoma, cord hemorrhage/acute blood, desmoid, granulocytic sarcoma, pigmented villonodular synovitis, Edheim-Chester, extramedullary hematopoiesis, IgG4-negative inflammatory pseudotumor, idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis, B-cell lymphoma, primary melanoma neoplasm, melanotic schwannoma, meningioma, opacification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, osteoblastoma, osteochondroma, osteosarcoma, and synovial cyst. T2 hypointensity is associated with SFT/HPC, and may be an indicator relative indolence. "Dark" T2 spinal lesions are rare, with a narrow differential populated predominantly by rare entities.

Abstract
We present a unique case of a patient simultaneously diagnosed with solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) and unrelated adenocarcinoma of the lung, both proven with separate pathology. It was subsequently found that the SFT had metastasized to the brain by additional pathology, and not the predicted adenocarcinoma. SFTs are a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for less than 2% of all reported soft tissue tumors. SFTs most commonly arise in the thoracic cavity, but are frequently found in various locations throughout the body, and rarely metastasize to the brain. This case highlights that rare neoplasms, such as SFT, should not be ruled out as a potential cause of metastasis. Due to the rarity of this clinical situation, we also provide a review and discussion of previously reported SFT cases and the use of postoperative radiation therapy. The optimal treatment for individual patients remains unclear in this unique situation. Surgical resection followed by adjuvant Gamma Knife radiation therapy to the surgical bed appears to be a safe option for local treatment of SFT in select patients. Further studies are needed of this rare clinical situation in order to better understand and optimize future treatments for patients with SFT and metastasis to the brain.

Abstract
While intradural extramedullary spinal disease varies widely, identification of tumors in this location and their radiologic manifestations greatly facilitates narrowing of the diagnostic considerations. Meningioma and schwannoma are the two most common intradural extramedullary tumors, and both are associated with neurofibromatosis. Meningiomas are most common in the thoracic spine and show a strong female predilection and a clinical manifestation related to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots. Schwannomas typically are associated with radicular pain and other sensory symptoms. Melanotic schwannoma frequently shows T1 hyperintensity at MRI related to the presence of paramagnetic free radicals in melanin. Neurofibroma, known for its T2 hyperintensity, frequently involves the cervical spine, where it may make surgical resection challenging. Less commonly, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor commonly mimics the imaging appearance of a schwannoma but has decidedly more aggressive biologic behavior. In the cauda equina, myxopapillary ependymoma and paraganglioma are believed to arise from the filum terminale and have characteristic imaging manifestations based on their underlying pathologic features. Recent identification of a common genetic marker has led to reclassification of what had previously been regarded as separate tumors and are now known as solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma. In the proper clinical setting, the presence of nodular intradural enhancement strongly suggests the presence of leptomeningeal metastatic disease, even when results of cerebrospinal fluid analysis are negative. Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle cell neoplasms of the mesenchymal origin. Lesions localized to the spine are exceptionally uncommon, only described in the literature in case reports and small case series. While these lesions are typically benign, there are a few reports in which they recur or present as malignancies. The patient presented in the case herein was a 72-year-old male, who presented with a 1-year history of lower extremity weakness, pain, and numbness and was found to have a cervical, intradural extramedullary tumor. In addition to the case report, the authors perform a thorough review of all previously published cases of spinal SFT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior studies have highlighted infratentorial tumor location as a prognostic factor for solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) and hemangiopericytoma (HPC) of the central nervous system (CNS), and spinal location is considered a positive prognostic factor for other tumors of the CNS. While SFT/HPC of the CNS is known to frequently arise from the spinal meninges, there are no case series that report outcomes for spinally located CNS tumors, and their prognosis in relation to intracranial and other CNS-located tumors is unknown. OBJECTIVE To investigate outcomes for patients with SFT/HPC of the spinal meninges. METHODS The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results Program was used to identify patients with SFT/HPC within the CNS from 1993-2015. We retrospectively analyzed the relationship between tumor location (spinal vs. Brain and other CNS) and survival. RESULTS We identified 551 cases of CNS SFT/HPC, 64 (11.6%) of which were primary tumors of the spinal meninges. Spinal tumors were more likely than brain and other CNS tumors to be SFT vs. HPC (37.5 vs. 12%, p < 0.001), benign (42.2 vs. 20.3%, p < 0.001), and less than 5 cm (53.1 vs. 35.7%, p < 0.001). The 10-year survival rates for spinal and brain/other CNS tumors were 85 and 58%, respectively. Median survival time was significantly longer for spinal tumors (median survival not reached vs. 138 months, p = 0.03, HR = 0.41 [95% CI 0.18-0.94]). On multivariable analysis, spinal tumor location was associated with improved survival over tumors located in the brain and other CNS (HR = 0.36 [95% CI 0.15-0.89], p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Spinal tumor location is associated with improved survival in patients with SFT/HPC of the CNS. Larger institutional studies are necessary to characterize the relationship between tumor location and other relevant factors such as presentation and amenability to gross-total resection and adjuvant radiotherapy. Future studies exploring optimal management of spinally located tumors are also needed.

Abstract
Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT-HMP) is a rare spindle-cell mesenchymal tumor, thought to be of myofibroblastic origin. Penile SFT-HMP was mentioned in the literature in two separate case reports which were published in 2015 and 2017. We present the first case of SFT-HMP which is localized on corpus cavernosum of the penis. A 55-year-old man presented to our clinic with a small and gradually growing lesion on his penis for the past year, which recently caused difficulties during sexual intercourse. On physical examination; a well-shaped, nodular non-fluctuant, solid, painless mass, measuring 4×4 cm was palpated. Magnetic resonance imaging showed 5×5 cm mass located on the right corpus cavernosa. Under spinal anesthesia, surgical excision was performed. Pathologically, the tumor had an irregular architecture patterns and was characterized by hypercellular areas separated by thin-walled, branching vessels, lined with a single layer of flattened endothelial cells. SFT-HMP rarely occurs in genital tract and penile presentation is among the rarest. It should be classified and considered under penile masses, especially if the mass is well circumscribed, painless and slowly growing in nature. After differential diagnosis, surgical excision is mandatory.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we retrospectively reviewed our experience in the surgical management of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT)/hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) of the spinal cord. METHODS Sixteen patients with SFT/HPCs of the spinal cord were enrolled in this study. Data on clinical presentation, radiologic findings, histopathologic features, surgical treatment, adjuvant therapy, and prognosis were retrospectively reviewed. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests were used to identify the prognostic factors for recurrence and overall survival (OS). RESULTS Our series included 6 men and 10 women, with a male/female ratio of 1:1.7. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed slightly hyperintense lesions on T2-weighted images for all 16 patients. All tumors showed positive immunohistochemical staining for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6. Statistical analysis of clinical data showed that age, gender, tumor location, tumor size, medullary compartment location, and Ki-67 index were not associated with recurrence and OS (P > 0.05). However, World Health Organization grade III was significantly associated with recurrence (P < 0.01). Gross total resection (GTR) and postoperative radiotherapy significantly reduced recurrence (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05), but only GTR showed remarkable benefits to improve OS (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS SFT/HPCs of spinal cord are rare neoplasms with a propensity to recur. Hyperintensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging combined with positive immunohistochemical staining for signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 are important clues for classification and differentiation of these tumors. The extent of resection, World Health Organization grade, and postoperative radiotherapy might be predictive factors for recurrence. Complete tumor resection should be sought whenever possible, and adjuvant radiotherapy is recommended after surgical resection. Moreover, regular and long-term follow-up is mandatory to monitor recurrence.
