A near-infrared turn-on fluorescent nanosensor for zinc(II) based on CuInS2 quantum dots modified with 8-aminoquinoline

A New Cellulose-Based Fluorescent Probe for Specific and Sensitive Detection of Cu2+ and Its Applications in the Analysis of Environmental Water

In this work, a novel fluorescent probe CMC−GE−AQ with an effective sensitive detection ability for Cu²⁺ was synthesized and constructed by using carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as the skeleton and 8-aminoquinoline (AQ) as the fluorophore. This probe exhibited a highly specific “turn-off” fluorescence response to Cu²⁺, and the fluorescence color changed from bright orange to colorless after adding Cu²⁺. The probe could selectively detect Cu²⁺ in a complex environment and its detection limit (LOD), the binding constant (K_a) and the numbers of binding sites (n) were calculated to be 6.4 × 10⁻⁸ mol L⁻¹, 1.7 × 10⁶ mol⁻¹ L and 1.2, respectively. The sensing detection mechanism was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the probe CMC−GE−AQ was successfully applied to detect Cu²⁺ in real water samples, and CMC−GE−AQ-based fluorescent microspheres can serve as a convenient tool for the detection of Cu²⁺.

Ternary Quantum Dots in Chemical Analysis. Synthesis and Detection Mechanisms

Ternary quantum dots (QDs) are novel nanomaterials that can be used in chemical analysis due their unique physicochemical and spectroscopic properties. These properties are size-dependent and can be adjusted in the synthetic protocol modifying the reaction medium, time, source of heat, and the ligand used for stabilization. In the last decade, several spectroscopic methods have been developed for the analysis of organic and inorganic analytes in biological, drug, environmental, and food samples, in which different sensing schemes have been applied using ternary quantum dots. This review addresses the different synthetic approaches of ternary quantum dots, the sensing mechanisms involved in the analyte detection, and the predominant areas in which these nanomaterials are used.

The Role of 8-Amidoquinoline Derivatives as Fluorescent Probes for Zinc Ion Determination

Mass-spectrometry-based and X-ray fluorescence-based techniques have allowed the study of the distribution of Zn²⁺ ions at extracellular and intracellular levels over the past few years. However, there are some issues during purification steps, sample preparation, suitability for quantification, and the instruments’ availability. Therefore, work on fluorescent sensors based on 8-aminoquinoline as tools to detect Zn²⁺ ions in environmental and biological applications has been popular. Introducing various carboxamide groups into an 8-aminoquinoline molecule to create 8-amidoquinoline derivatives to improve water solubility and cell membrane permeability is also a recent trend. This review aims to present a general overview of the fluorophore 8-aminoquinoline and its derivatives as Zn²⁺ receptors for zinc sensor probes. Various fluorescent chemosensor designs based on 8-amidoquinoline and their effectiveness and potential as a recognition probe for zinc analysis were discussed. Based on this review, it can be concluded that derivatives of 8-amidoquinoline have vast potential as functional receptors for zinc ions primarily because of their fast reactivity, good selectivity, and bio-compatibility, especially for biological applications. To better understand the Zn²⁺ ion fluorophores’ function, diversity of the coordination complex and geometries need further studies. This review provides information in elucidating, designing, and exploring new 8-amidoquinoline derivatives for future studies for the improvement of chemosensors that are selective and sensitive to Zn²⁺.

Zinc(ii), copper(ii) and cadmium(ii) complexes as fluorescent chemosensors for cations

The fluorescence chemosensing behavior of Zn(ii), Cu(ii), and Cd(ii) based complexes toward cations has been described. Cation detection via conventional mechanisms, metal-metal exchange and chemodosimetric approaches along with the importance of metal ions and the scope, significance, and challenges with regard to the detection of cations by metal complex based probes will be discussed in detail. The fundamentals of photophysical behavior and mechanisms involved in the fluorescence detection of analytes will also be described. This article provides a detailed overview of Zn(ii), Cu(ii), and Cd(ii) based complexes as fluorescent probes for cations, together with essential discussions pertaining to detection mechanisms.

Compound Copper Chalcogenide Nanocrystals

This review captures the synthesis, assembly, properties, and applications of copper chalcogenide NCs, which have achieved significant research interest in the last decade due to their compositional and structural versatility. The outstanding functional properties of these materials stems from the relationship between their band structure and defect concentration, including charge carrier concentration and electronic conductivity character, which consequently affects their optoelectronic, optical, and plasmonic properties. This, combined with several metastable crystal phases and stoichiometries and the low energy of formation of defects, makes the reproducible synthesis of these materials, with tunable parameters, remarkable. Further to this, the review captures the progress of the hierarchical assembly of these NCs, which bridges the link between their discrete and collective properties. Their ubiquitous application set has cross-cut energy conversion (photovoltaics, photocatalysis, thermoelectrics), energy storage (lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen generation), emissive materials (plasmonics, LEDs, biolabelling), sensors (electrochemical, biochemical), biomedical devices (magnetic resonance imaging, X-ray computer tomography), and medical therapies (photochemothermal therapies, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, and drug delivery). The confluence of advances in the synthesis, assembly, and application of these NCs in the past decade has the potential to significantly impact society, both economically and environmentally.
