Abstract
Sulfur-doped BCNO quantum dots (S-BCNO QDs) emitting green fluorescence were prepared by elemental doping method. The ratiometric fluorescence probe with dual emissions was simply established by mixed S-BCNO QDs with gold nanoclusters (GSH-Au NCs). Because the emission spectrum of Au NCs (donor) at 615 nm overlapped well with the ultraviolet absorption of malachite green (MG), fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) can be achieved. When the concentration of MG increased, the fluorescence intensity (F495) of S-BCNO QDs decreased slowly, while the fluorescence intensity (F615) of Au NCs decreased sharply. The fluorescence intensity ratio of F615/F495 decreased with the increase of MG. By plotting the F615/F495 values against MG concentration, a sensitive and rapid detection of MG was possible with a wide detection range (0.1-50 µM) and a low detection limit of 10 nM. Due to the accompanying fluorescence color change from pink to blue-green, it can be used for visual detection. A three dimensional-printing device utilizing digital image colorimetry to capture color changes through the built-in camera, enables quantitative detection of MG with a good linearity between the values of red/green ratio and MG concentrations at the range 1-50 µM. This sensing platform had a range of advantages, including high cost-effectiveness, portability, ease of operation, and high sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensing platform was successfully applied to the detection of MG in real water sample and fish samples, thereby verifying the reliability and effectiveness of this sensing platform in water quality monitoring and food safety.

Abstract
Multi-target detection combined with in-situ removal of contaminants is a challenging issue difficult to overcome. Herein, a dual-emissive Eu3+-metal organic framework (Eu3+-MOF) was constructed by pre-functionalization with a blue-emissive ligand and post-functionalization with red-emissive Eu3+ ions using a UiO-66 precursor. The fluorescence of the synthesized Eu3+-MOF is highly selective and sensitive toward malachite green (MG) and its metabolite leuco-malachite green (LMG), which are environmentally persistent and highly toxic to humans. The limit of detection of MG and LMG are 34.20 and 1.98 nM, respectively. Interestingly, the fluorescence of this Eu3+-MOF showed ratiometric but different responsive modes toward MG and LMG, which enabled the simultaneous quantification of MG and LMG. Furthermore, a paper-based sensor combined with the smartphone was fabricated, which facilitated not only the dual-channel detection of MG, but also its portable, visual, rapid, and intelligent determination. Furthermore, the high surface area of MOFs, together with the coordinate bonding interaction, π-π stacking, and electrostatic interaction sites, endows Eu3+-MOF with the efficient ability toward MG removal. This multifunctional Eu3+-MOF can be successfully used for trace detection, simultaneous determination of MG and LMG, as well as efficient removal of MG. Thus, it exhibits bright prospects for widespread applications in the field of food and environmental analysis.

Abstract
A new type of hexafluorobutanol (HFB) primary alcohol ethoxylate (AEO)-based supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS) with density higher than water was prepared for the first time. HFB acted as AEO micelle-forming agent and density-regulating agent for SUPRAS formation. The prepared SUPARS was applied as extraction solvent for vortex-assisted direct microextraction of malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV) from lake sediment followed by high-performance liquid chromatographic determination. In the present work, SUPRASs prepared from AEO with different carbon chains as the amphiphiles and various coacervation agents were investigated. SUPARS formed from MOA-3 and HFB provided better extraction efficiency in comparison with other SUPRASs. Parameters influencing the extraction recovery of target analytes including the type and volume of AEO, volume of HFB, and vortex time were investigated and optimized. Under optimized conditions, linearity in the range of 2.0-400 μg g-1 for MG and 2.0-500 μg g-1 for CV with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9947 was obtained. Limits of detection of 0.5 μg g-1 and relative standard deviations in the range of 0.9-5.8% were obtained. Compared to conventional extraction techniques for analysis of analytes in solid samples, the proposed method reduced sample usage and eliminated a primary extraction process by using a toxic organic solvent. The proposed method is simple, fast, and green and can be used for the analysis of target analytes in solid samples.

Abstract
Although nucleic acid aptasensors are increasingly applied in the detection of environmentally hazardous biomolecules, several formidable challenges remain with this technique because of their vulnerability, high cost and suboptimal sensitivity. Here, a docking-aided rational tailoring (DART) strategy was established at three levels and in two dimensions for the refinement of malachite green (MG) DNA aptamers. Guided by in silico molecular docking, coarse and fine tailoring were conducted at three levels each, to significantly enhance fluorescence activation intensity and binding affinity in two dimensions. Empowered by the results of the rational tailoring, a mechanistic view of the MG DNA aptamer-target interaction was thoroughly analyzed via four types of interactions. To meet the demand for point-of-care testing (POCT), a label-free and ratiometric fluorescent aptasensor was developed leveraging the tailored MG aptamer, based on the binding site competition-equilibrium effect via the introduction of a reference dye. This sensitive, specific, low-cost and rapid aptasensor subsequently demonstrated outstanding detection performance, achieving an ideal signal response range of 5 nmol·L-1 - 6 μmol·L-1 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.49 nmol·L-1. The DART strategy and systematic exploration of the MG DNA luminescent aptamers herein will provide a valuable reference in the field of aptamer tailoring, biosensing and bioimaging. The proposed label-free ratiometric aptasensor also provides a highly generalizable strategy for hazardous biomolecular detection.

Abstract
Malachite green (MG) is an organic dye compound that is frequently used as a fungicide and antiseptic in aquaculture. However, human or animal exposure to MG causes carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects. Herein, a novel fluorescent assay was designed for the detection of MG using manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO2 NS) as an energy acceptor to quench the fluorescence of branched poly(ethylenimine) carbon dots (BPEI-CDs) via Förster resonance energy transfer. When butyrylcholinesterase is introduced to form thiocholine in the presence of S-butyrylthiocholine iodide, MnO2 NS can be recovered by thiocholine to Mn2+, resulting in restoration of the fluorescence of BPEI-CDs. Exploiting these changes in fluorescence intensity in the above system, a fluorescence probe was successfully developed for the quantitative detection of MG. Besides, this assay was applied to fish samples, verifying the high potential for practical application of the proposed sensor for the monitoring of MG in aquatic products.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) is a sensitive and nondestructive technique that provides fingerprint structural information of molecules. Designing and constructing sensitive and stable SERS substrates is of great significance for the application of the technique. In this study, single-layer carbon-based dots (CDs) are used as capping agents to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs/CDs) and manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO2/CDs), which are then hybridized through a simple cocentrifugation method. After the hybridization, the monodispersive AuNPs/CDs aggregate obviously into some clusters exhibiting strong SERS activity due to the electromagnetic "hot spots" effect, and the MnO2/CDs also show outstanding SERS activity due to the charge-transfer resonance effect. The obtained nanohybrids (MnO2/CDs/AuNPs) with robust chemical stability combine well with the electromagnetic enhancement of AuNPs/CDs and chemical enhancement of MnO2/CDs, leading to an ultrahigh enhancement factor of 3.9 × 108. Based on the novel SERS substrate, a sensitive and rapid sensing system for the detection of malachite green is developed, with a low detection limit of 1 × 10-9 M. This work provides a valuable model for designing and fabricating high-performance SERS substrates.

Abstract
This review critically summarizes the knowledge of imprinted polymer-based electrochemical sensors for the detection of pesticides, metal ions and waterborne pathogenic bacteria, focusing on the last five years. MIP-based electrochemical sensors exhibit low limits of detection (LOD), high selectivity, high sensitivity and low cost. We put the emphasis on the design of imprinted polymers and their composites and coatings by radical polymerization, oxidative polymerization of conjugated monomers or sol-gel chemistry. Whilst most imprinted polymers are used in conjunction with differential pulse or square wave voltammetry for sensing organics and metal ions, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) appears as the chief technique for detecting bacteria or their corresponding proteins. Interestingly, bacteria could also be probed via their quorum sensing signaling molecules or flagella proteins. If much has been developed in the past decade with glassy carbon or gold electrodes, it is clear that carbon paste electrodes of imprinted polymers are more and more investigated due to their versatility. Shortlisted case studies were critically reviewed and discussed; clearly, a plethora of tricky strategies of designing selective electrochemical sensors are offered to "Imprinters". We anticipate that this review will be of interest to experts and newcomers in the field who are paying time and effort combining electrochemical sensors with MIP technology.

Abstract
Malachite green (MG) has been widely used for controlling external fungi and parasites in the aquaculture. However, MG has been proven to be very hazardous, and the detection of MG in aquaculture environment is crucial for determining whether MG has been used within the allowed limit and for protecting the environment. Herein, a kind of copper based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was prepared using copper nitrate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) as raw materials. The prepared Cu-BTC materials provide larger active area and higher accumulation capacity for MG, and meanwhile lower the charge-transfer resistance. As a result, the oxidation signal and detection sensitivity of MG are significantly improved by Cu-BTC frameworks. The linear range is 2-500 nM, and the detection limit is 0.67 nM, which is much lower than the reported values. Moreover, other usually-used aquaculture drugs have no interferences, including erythromycin, chloramphenicol, oxytetracycline, furazolidone and nitrofurazone. This method was applied in the water samples, and the results were consistent with those using high-performance liquid chromatography.

Abstract
Pore size and functionalization are two critical factors for covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as effective adsorbents. However, due to the low crystallinity of COFs, it is a grand challenge to accomplish pore diameter adjustment and functionalization at the same time. In this work, we developed a simple and ingenious strategy, cutting off linkage, to synchronously construct hierarchical porosity and modify thiol groups in COFs under mild conditions. The hybrid COFs containing disulfide bonds were designed and synthesized, and then the disulfide bonds were cleaved by glutathione, resulting in the formation of thiol groups as well as the increase in pore size caused by skeleton defects. The pore diameter of thiol-functionalized hierarchical porous COFs (denoted as HP-TpEDA-SH) was concentrated at 2.6 and 3.5 nm. Thanks to the electrostatic attraction of thiol groups to cationic dyes and the higher number of available adsorption sites, the maximum extraction amounts of methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), and crystal violet (CV) by HP-TpEDA-SH were 2.6, 2.1, and 3.3 times those of microporous COFs under optimal extraction conditions, respectively. The proposed analytical method (solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography/ultraviolet (SPE-HPLC/UV)) with HP-TpEDA-SH as the adsorbent showed low detection limits of 1.3, 0.13, and 0.12 μg·L-1 for MB, MG, and CV, respectively. The recoveries of three spiked water samples ranged from 81.5 to 113.8%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 9.7%. This work not only opened a new avenue for the preparation of functionalized hierarchical porous COFs but also established an effective method for detecting trace cationic dyes in fishery water.

Abstract
Facile detection of malachite green (MG), a toxic dye, in aquaculture is urgently demanded for environment and food safety. Herein, we design a novel fluorescent probe, namely red emissive Se,N,Cl-doped carbon dots (CDs), to accurately determinate MG. CDs are prepared by hydrothermal treatment of selenourea and o-phenylenediamine in HCl solution. This material exhibits excitation-independent dual emissions at 625 and 679 nm, with a high quantum yield of 23.6%. A selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor toward MG is established based on inner filter effect, because both the excitation and emission light of CDs can be strongly absorbed by MG. The fluorescence quenching of CDs is linear to the MG concentration over the range of 0.07-2.50 μM with a low detection limit of 21 nM. Trace-level analysis of MG in fish tissue is successfully explored, demonstrating the great potential of the proposed sensor for MG monitoring in aquatic products.

Abstract
A fluorescence probe was delicately designed for the detection of malachite green (MG) in water and fish samples. Through the electrostatic self-assembly of CdTe QDs on the surface of polystyrene (PS) microspheres, the fluorescence signal was amplified. After grafting molecularly imprinted film, the fluorescence probe of MIP@PS@CdTe was fabricated and applied to the detection of MG based on fluorescence quenching. The linear range of MG detection was 0.01-20 μmol L-1, and the detection limit was 4.7 nmol L-1 (3σ, n = 9) which was much lower than those of the previous reports. The recoveries of MG in aquaculture water and fish samples ranging from 87.6% to 105.4% illustrated that the detection by MIP@PS@CdTe probe was accurate and reliable.

Detection of Malachite Green using a colorimetric aptasensor based on the inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles by cetyltrimethylammonium ions. Abstract
A specific and sensitive colorimetric aptasensor is described for the determination of Malachite Green (MG). It is exploiting the inhibition of the peroxidase-like activity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs act as enzyme mimics that catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by H2O2 to yield a dark blue solution. The catalytic activity is inhibited by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium ion, specifically by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which causes the aggregation of AuNPs. If a (negatively charged) RNA-aptamer against MG is added, it binds to the positively charged CTAB and prevents aggregation. This enhances the enzyme mimicking activity of the AuNPs and leads to the formation of a dark blue solution. However, in the presence of MG, the aptamer binds to MG, and leads to the aggregation of AuNPs again. The aggregated AuNPs possess a light blue color. A colorimetric method (best performed at 650 nm) was work out that can detect MG in a concentration range from 10 to 500 nmol L-1. The detection limit based on 3σ/k criterion is 1.8 nmol L-1. The assay is highly specific and accurate. Recoveries from spiked real samples (aquaculture water) ranged from 80% to 120%. Graphical abstract Based on the inhibition of cetyltrimethyal ammonium ion and the enhancement of RNA-aptamer, the differences of the peroxidase-like activities of AuNPs can be greatly enlarged with and without MG, by which a colorimetric aptasensor can be constructed for the detection of Malachite Green (MG).

Abstract
A facile and practical ratiometric fluorescence probe based on two CdTe quantum dots (QDs) coated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was prepared for the detection of trace malachite green (MG) in fish. Two CdTe QDs coated with MIPs were fabricated by a one-pot method using MG, (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as template, functional monomer, and cross-linker, respectively. CdTe QDs with λem 530 nm (gQDs) and 630 nm (rQDs) were used as the referential fluorophore and target sensitive fluorophore, respectively. The fluorescence intensity of gQDs remained unchanged in the presence of MG, while the fluorescence of rQDs could be quantitatively quenched by MG based on the strategy of fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The ratiometric fluorescence probe (MIPs@gQDs&rQDs) was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The linear range of MG detection was 0.1-32 μmol L-1 with a detection limit of 8.8 μg kg-1. The constructed probe has been successfully applied to the detection of MG in fish with the recoveries of 92.3-109.1%, which were validated by the method of HPLC. The result indicated that the probe possessed rapid response, wide linear range, high sensitivity, and relatively high selectivity, and was low-cost and easy in operation in the detection of MG in fish samples.

Abstract
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a sensitive technique for the detection of low concentration analytes. In this study, we used cellulose fibers (CF) as the templates for the loading of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), and the obtained CF-Ag was applied in the detection of R6G and Malachite Green (MG) by surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The adsorption technique was employed in the sample preparation, and the optimal detecting status was identified in the dynamic range (sample status ranging from wet to dry) for different concentration of analytes. In comparison to Ag NPs, CF-Ag showed enhanced performance for adsorptive detection of Malachite Green, and the limit of detection was 5 × 10-12 M.

Abstract
This review (with 154 refs.) describes the current status of using molecularly imprinted polymers in the extraction and quantitation of illicit drugs and additives. The review starts with an introduction into some synthesis methods (lump MIPs, spherical MIPs, surface imprinting) of MIPs using illicit drugs and additives as templates. The next section covers applications, with subsections on the detection of illegal additives in food, of doping in sports, and of illicit addictive drugs. A particular focus is directed towards current limitations and challenges, on the optimization of methods for preparation of MIPs, their applicability to aqueous samples, the leakage of template molecules, and the identification of the best balance between adsorption capacity and selectivity factor. At last, the need for convincing characterization methods, the lack of uniform parameters for defining selectivity, and the merits and demerits of MIPs prepared using nanomaterials are addressed. Strategies are suggested to solve existing problems, and future developments are discussed with respect to a more widespread use in relevant fields. Graphical abstract This review gives a comprehensive overview of the advances made in molecularly imprinting of polymers for use in the extraction and quantitation of illicit drugs and additives. Methods for syntheses, highlighted applications, limitations and current challenges are specifically addressed.

Abstract
A novel fluorescence-based sensor combining synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) was fabricated with reverse microemulsion method. Tetracycline (TC), (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and carbon quantum dots (CDs) were used as template, functional monomer, cross-linker and signal sources respectively in the probe preparation. A synchronous fluorescence emission (λem) at 355nm was observed for the prepared MIP-coated CDs (MIP@CDs) particles when the wavelength interval (Δλ) was set as 70nm, and the synchronous fluorescence intensity could be rapidly and efficiently quenched by TC based on inner filter effect (IFE). The quenching efficiencies of synchronous fluorescence intensity was linearly fitted with tetracycline (TC) concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 50μmolL-1 with a detection limit (DL) of 9nmolL-1 (3σ, n=9). The MIP@CDs was used as a probe to detect TC in fish samples with the recoveries ranging from 98.4% to 103.1% and the relative standard deviation less than 6.0%. The results illustrated that the as-prepared MIP@CDs could be applied to the detection of trace TC in fish samples with rapidity, high sensitivity and accuracy.

Abstract
A new multianalyte immunoassay was designed to screen furaltadone metabolite 5-morpholinomethyl-3-amino-2-oxazolidone (AMOZ), malachite green (MG), and leucomalachite green (LMG) in aquatic products using a bispecific monoclonal antibody (BsMAb). Gradient drug mutagenesis methods were separately used to prepare an anti-3-nitrobenzaldehyde-derivatized AMOZ (3-NPAMOZ) hybridoma cell line that was hypoxanthine-guanine-phosphoribosyltransferase (HGRPT) deficient and an anti-LMG hybridoma cell line that was thymidine kinase (TK) deficient. BsMAb recognizing 3-NPAMOZ and LMG was generated using hybrid-hybridomas of HGRPT and TK deficient cell lines. For AMOZ and LMG, respectively, the BsMAb-based indirect competitive ELSIA (ic-ELISA) values of 1.7 ng/mL and 45.3 ng/mL and detection limits of 0.2 ng/mL and 4.8 ng/mL. To establish the ic-ELISA, 3-NPAMOZ derivatized from AMOZ with 3-nitrobenzaldehyde and LMG reduced from MG by potassium borohydride was recognized by BsMAb. Recoveries of AMOZ, MG, and LMG in aquatic products were satisfactory and correlated with HPLC analysis. Thus, the multianalyte ic-ELISA is suitable for rapid quantification of AMOZ, MG, and LMG in aquatic products.
