Recent advances in electrochemical strategies for bacteria detection

Introduction: Bacterial infections have always been a major threat to public health and humans' life, and fast detection of bacteria in various samples is significant to provide early and effective treatments. Cell-culture protocols, as well-established methods, involve labor-intensive and complicated preparation steps. For overcoming this drawback, electrochemical methods may provide promising alternative tools for fast and reliable detection of bacterial infections. Methods: Therefore, this review study was done to present an overview of different electrochemical strategy based on recognition elements for detection of bacteria in the studies published during 2015-2020. For this purpose, many references in the field were reviewed, and the review covered several issues, including (a) enzymes, (b) receptors, (c) antimicrobial peptides, (d) lectins, (e) redox-active metabolites, (f) aptamer, (g) bacteriophage, (h) antibody, and (i) molecularly imprinted polymers. Results: Different analytical methods have developed are used to bacteria detection. However, most of these methods are highly time, and cost consuming, requiring trained personnel to perform the analysis. Among of these methods, electrochemical based methods are well accepted powerful tools for the detection of various analytes due to the inherent properties. Electrochemical sensors with different recognition elements can be used to design diagnostic system for bacterial infections. Recent studies have shown that electrochemical assay can provide promising reliable method for detection of bacteria. Conclusion: In general, the field of bacterial detection by electrochemical sensors is continuously growing. It is believed that this field will focus on portable devices for detection of bacteria based on electrochemical methods. Development of these devices requires close collaboration of various disciplines, such as biology, electrochemistry, and biomaterial engineering.

A distinguished cancer-screening package containing a DNA sensor and an aptasensor for early and certain detection of acute lymphoblastic leukemia

A disposable package of biosensors was developed along with the corresponding guidelines for early detection of the acute lymphoblastic leukemia cancer. This proposed cancer-screening package included a DNA sensor and an aptasensor as two main types of biosensors. The biosensors were used simultaneously. This combination of sensors can detect not only the presence of mutant genes but also the biomarkers of cancer. At current work, the combination of sensors were used to detect the presence of BCR-ABL1 as a mutant gene and CEA as a biomarkers of cancer, such a capability makes the package liable for early and certain detection of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. To construct both the DNA sensor and the aptasensor, a nanocomposite consisting of electrosynthesis carbon quantum dots and biosynthesized gold nanoparticles was applied. The construction of these biosensors was characterized using four different electrochemical methods including DPV (Differential Pulse Voltammetry), EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy), CV (Cyclic Voltammetry) and chronoamperometry. The peak current of a catechol solution that was used as an electroactive probe on the biosensor was linearly related to the logarithm of the concentrations of the target DNA and the target antigen in the range of 10 pM to 100 μM and 1 pg mL^-1 to 0.001 g mL^-1 with the detection limits of 1.5 pM and 0.26 pg mL^-1 respectively, which are quite good results.

The Yin and Yang of carbon nanomaterials in atherosclerosis

With unique characteristics such as high surface area, capacity of various functionalization, low weight, high conductivity, thermal and chemical stability, and free radical scavenging, carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerene, graphene (oxide), carbon nanohorns (CNHs), and their derivatives have increasingly been utilized in nanomedicine and biomedicine. On the one hand, owing to ever-increasing applications of CNMs in technological and industrial fields as well as presence of combustion-derived CNMs in the ambient air, the skepticism has risen over the adverse effects of CNMs on human being. The influences of CNMs on cardiovascular system and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) such as atherosclerosis, of which consequences are ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke, as the main causes of death, is of paramount importance. In this regard, several studies have been devoted to specify the biomedical applications and cardiovascular toxicity of CNMs. Therefore, the aim of this review is to specify the roles and applications of various CNMs in atherosclerosis, and also identify the key role playing parameters in cardiovascular toxicity of CNMs so as to be a clue for prospective deployment of CNMs.
