Graphene intercalated with carbon nanosphere: a novel solid-phase extraction sorbent for five carbamate pesticides

Porous chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel composite for synergically enhanced solid phase microextraction of polychlorinated naphthalene in environmental water

The residues of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) produced in multiple industrial production and life processes are continuously entering environmental waters through atmospheric deposition and land drainage, and the water pollution caused by PCNs is continuing public concern due to their potential threat to aquatic ecosystems and public health. Herein, a new chlorine-functionalized covalent organic framework anchored graphene aerogel (COF-GA) was synthesized by covalent modification technology and used as fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction for synergically enhanced extraction of PCNs in environmental water. The extraction efficiency of COF-GA coated fiber was superior to commercial fiber due to the multiple interactions (π-π, hydrophobic interaction, and halogen bonding interaction). The COF-GA coated fiber has good stability, can avoid water vapor interference at 80 °C for a long time (30 -50 min) to maintain adsorption equilibrium, and can be reused at least 96 times. Combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, a sensitive method for the high-efficient enrichment (enrichment factors were 501 -7453 folds) and ultra-sensitive detection (LODs were 0.001 -0.428 pg/mL) of PCNs in environmental water was established. The enrichment factor for PCNs is significantly higher than in previous studies. This proposed method provides new technical support for the daily monitoring and risk assessment of trace PCNs in environmental water.

Development of a Pt-graphene nanocomposite-based solid-phase extraction coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of carbamate pesticides in fish

In the present work, a potential solid-phase extraction (SPE) material based on graphene anchored with platinum nanoparticles (Pt-Graphene) was prepared and characterized by scanning electron micrographs and transmission electron micrograph. The carbamates residues in fish were enriched by SPE filled with Pt-Graphene and detected by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The proposed extraction protocol exhibited satisfactory recoveries (76.5-115.6%), low limit of quantitation values in μg kg^-1 level, and good precision for the studied ten carbamates. These results demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed protocol. The developed Pt-Graphene nanoparticles showed excellent performance for extracting analytes at trace levels, indicating that it could be used as a potential SPE sorbent in food residue analysis.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 modified magnetic halloysite nanotube-based solid phase extraction for the analysis of carbamate pesticides by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 modified magnetic halloysite nanotube (MHNTs@ZIF-8) composites were synthesized and evaluated for the first time as an efficient sorbent for the magnetic solid-phase extraction (mSPE) of carbamate pesticides (CPs) from water samples. MHNTs were prepared by coprecipitation, and MHNTs@ZIF-8 composites were assembled in situ at room temperature. After characterization, MHNTs@ZIF-8 was used to extract pirimicarb, propoxur, carbaryl, isoprocarb and fenobucarb via π-π stacking interaction and hydrophobic interaction between the imidazole skeleton of ZIF-8 and benzene rings or benzene-like rings in CPs, as well as the hydrogen bond formed between O in CPs and H in ZIF-8. The effects of the amount of sorbent, ionic strength, type and volume of desorption solvent and adsorption/desorption time were investigated. Under optimum conditions, good linearity was obtained for the analysis of CPs by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) with R² ≥ 0.9992. The limits of quantification range from 3 to 40 ng L^-1 in water. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) were <7%, n = 5, within a batch and <9% among batches. The spiked recoveries were between 81 and 104%. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of CPs in various water samples.

Porous organic framework as coating for stir bar sorptive extraction of carbamate pesticides from corn and potato samples

Three porous organic frameworks (POFs) were synthesized by the reaction between phloroglucinol and 1,4-phthalaldehyde, 4,4'-biphenyldialdehyde or tris-(4-formylphenyl) amine; the products are named as POF-a, POF-b and POF-c, respectively. They were used to prepare POFs coated stir bars respectively for the extraction of four carbamate pesticides (CMPs). POF-c coated stir bar exhibited better adsorption performance than POF-a/b coated stir bar and commercial stir bars, probably due to the stronger conjugated structure and hydrophobicity of POF-c, and resultant hydrophobic, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions between them. The adsorption mechanism for target CMPs was verified by characterization techniques and molecular dynamics simulation. A method of POF-c coated stir bar sorptive extraction-high performance liquid chromatography-variable wavelength ultraviolet detector was developed for the analysis of four CMPs in corn and potato samples. Under the optimal conditions, LODs of the method were between 0.017 and 0.048 μg/L, and the linear range for four CMPs was 0.1/0.2-200 μg/L.

Heterogeneous adsorbent based on CeZrO2 nanoparticles doped magnetic graphene oxide used for vortex assisted magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction of erythromycin in chicken

A simple, fast, and efficient method of vortex assisted magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction for separation and pre-concentration of erythromycin in chicken samples prior to high LC-UV determination has been developed. The novel heterogeneous CeZrO₂ nanoparticles doped magnetic graphene oxide, for use as an efficient nanosorbent, was synthetised and applied for the adsorption of erythromycin. The synthetised nanosorbent was characterised using both Fourier-transform infra-red (FT-IR) and energy dispersive X-Ray (EDX) spectroscopy together with field emission scanning electron microscopy-EDX. To obtain the best extraction condition and maximum extraction efficiency of erythromycin, the effect of important parameters including pH, amount of sorbent, vortexing time, ionic strength, sample volume, and desorption conditions were investigated. At optimum conditions, a linear range of 0.25-300 µg kg^-1, LOD (S/N = 3) of 0.079 µg kg^-1, and LOQ (S/N = 10) of 0.270 µg kg^-1 were obtained. The precision of the method was established as having an RSD (%) at 100 µg kg^-1 of erythromycin for seven replicates of 2.6% and 3.2% for the intra-day and the inter-day, respectively. Recoveries over 94.0% confirmed a high capability of the proposed method for separation and determination of erythromycin residues in chicken being one of the most important animal products.

Efficient Extraction and Determination of Carbamate Pesticides in Vegetables Based on a Covalent Organic Frameworks with Acylamide Sites

It is an important challenge to effectively extract and determine pesticides in complex samples. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are burgeoning porous crystalline organic materials with good environmental resistance, thus demonstrating great potential as adsorbents in contaminants detection. In this work, we design and synthesize a novel COF-TpDB via 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4'-diaminobenzoylanilide (DB) as well as its packed cartridge for solid phase extraction (SPE) of carbamate pesticides. Simulation calculations showed H-bonding facilitates the adsorption interactions between the carbamate pesticides and TpDB. A method was developed by coupling TpDB as SPE sorbents with high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) detection to determine trace carbamate pesticides in vegetables. The established method showed a wide linear range of 0.1-200 ng mL^-1 and low limit of detections (0.005-0.05 ng mL^-1) for four carbamate pesticides. The applicability of TpDB as adsorbent was investigated for determination of trace carbamate pesticides residue in vegetables with satisfactory recoveries of four carbamates in the range of 80.4-101.2%. The results demonstrated that the COF-TpDB offer great potential for efficient extraction of carbamate pesticides from complicate matrices.

Synthesis of bimetallic core-shelled nanoparticles modified by 2-mercaptoethanol as SERS substrates for detecting ferbam and thiabendazole in apple puree

Modification of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates with thiol ligands is an emerging approach in enhancing the stability and sensitivity of metal substrates due to their good affinity with metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu. Thus, in the current study, 2-mercaptoethanol was used to modify the surface of silver-coated gold nanoparticles to develop a novel SERS substrate for the rapid assessment of fungicide residues in fruit samples. Results showed that the substrate could achieve the detection of ferbam and thiabendazole residues in apple puree with limits of detection of approximately 0.0042 and 0.0064 ppm, high coefficients of determination of 0.9946 and 0.9968, good recoveries ranging from 80 to 105 and 81 to 107% and relative standard deviations of 3.5-7.5 and 3.8-7.9 %, respectively. Therefore, the substrate developed could potentially be utilised to assess other toxic agrochemicals in future.

Nanoparticles Based Extraction Strategies for Accurate and Sensitive Determination of Different Pesticides

Sample preparation methods have become indispensable steps in analytical measurements not only to lower the detection limit but also to eliminate the matrix effect although more sophisticated instruments are being commonly used in routine analyses. Solid phase extraction (SPE) is one of the main extraction/preconcentration methods used to extract and purify target analytes along with simple and rapid procedures but some limitations have led to seek for an easy, sensitive and fast extraction methods with analyte-selective sorbents. Nanoparticles with different modifications have been used as spotlight to enhance extraction efficiency of target pesticides from complicated matrices. Carbon-based, metal and metal oxides, silica and polymer-based nanoparticles have been explored as promising sorbents for pesticide extraction. In this review, different types of nanoparticles used in the preconcentration of pesticides in various samples are outlined and examined. Latest studies in the literature are discussed in terms of their instrumental detection, sample matrix and limit of detection values. Novel strategies and future directions of nanoparticles used in the extraction and preconcentration of pesticides are also discussed.
