Magnetic hollow bimetallic zinc/cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework as sorbent for efficiently enriching aflatoxins combined with UHPLC-IT-MSn determination

Synthesis of an ordered macroporous metal-organic framework for efficient solid-phase extraction of aflatoxins from milk products

Aflatoxins (AFs) exhibit hepatotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and carcinogenicity, and their detection in food has attracted widespread concern. An ordered macroporous metal-organic framework (OM-ZIF-8) based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) was used to extract six AFs from milk products. The SPE conditions, including eluting solvent, eluting volume, amounts of OM-ZIF-8, pH of loading solution, loading solvent, ionic strength, loading flow rate, and elution flow rate, were exhaustively optimized. Under optimal parameters, the six AFs were detected by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The OM-ZIF-8 exhibited satisfactory AFs extraction performance through ordered macropore structure, π-π interaction, coordination interaction, and electrostatic interaction. Furthermore, linearity in the range of 0.01-100 ng mL-1 with low detection limits of 0.002-0.0150 ng mL-1 was obtained, and the relative recoveries of AFs were 80.3-110 % with relative standard deviation ≤8.7 %. Thus, this research provides a promising platform for the analysis of trace AFs in complex foods.

Activate hydrogen peroxide for facile and efficient removal of aflatoxin B1 by magnetic Pd-chitosan/rice husk-hercynite biocomposite and its impact on the quality of edible oil

Due to the high heat and chemical stability of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) with significant impacts on humans/animals and thus it needs to develop a practical and efficient approach for its removal. Herein, we fabricated a magnetic Pd-chitosan/glutaraldehyde/rice husk/hercynite (Pd@CRH-x) composite for efficient detoxification of AFB1. The Pd@CRH-x was obtained by a simple wet-impregnation procedure of CRH complexes followed by pyrolysis. The results confirmed that the unique structure of Pd@CRH-400 effectively improves dispersity, and mass transfer subsequently enhancing removal efficiency in batch conditions. Results indicate 94.30 % of AFB1 was efficiently degraded by 0.1 mg mL-1 Pd@CRH-400 with 4.0 mM H2O2 at wide pH ranges (3.0-10) at 60 min with a decomposition rate constant of 0.0467 min-1. Besides, by comparing the quality factors of edible oil (i.e., acid value, peroxide value, iodine value, moisture, volatile matters, anisidine value, and fatty acid composition), it was confirmed that there was no obvious influence on the physicochemical indicators of edible oil after removal/storage process. Subsequently, the systematic kinetic study and AFB1 degradation mechanism were presented. This study provides a new strategy for the efficient construction of controllable and dispersed Pd-based catalysts using CRH-x as a spatial support for alleviating the risk of toxic pollutants.

Fe3O4/ZIFs-based magnetic solid-phase extraction for the effective extraction of two precursors with diverse structures in aflatoxin B1 biosynthetic pathway

The aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) early warning technique based on precursors is an effective strategy for the prevention of AFB₁ contamination risk. The determination of precursors is imperative to ensure the efficiency of the early warning technique. Herein, a controllable magnetic adsorbent Fe₃O₄/ZIFs was first introduced for the effective extraction and determination of averantin (AVN) and sterigmatocystin (ST) precursors in cereal by combining magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Benefiting from the abundant adsorption sites and multifunctional groups matching the analytes, Fe₃O₄/ZIFs effectively and simultaneously extracted AVN and ST with great differences in polarity and structure via multiple interactions. AVN was extracted by Fe₃O₄/ZIFs mainly through π-π and hydrophobic interactions, while ST was extracted predominantly by electrostatic interactions and surface complexation. The limits of detection were 0.08 μg kg^-1 (AVN) and 0.36 μg kg^-1 (ST). The developed method exhibited satisfactory spiked recoveries (79.1%-105.4%) in the determination of AVN and ST in rice. This work provides a novel analytical strategy for further studying AFB₁ early warning technique and the formation and transformation of aflatoxins.

Dispersive Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction as a Novelty Sample Treatment for the Determination of the Main Aflatoxins in Paprika

Dispersive magnetic solid-phase extraction (DMSPE) technique is proposed as a new sensitive and effective sample treatment method for the determination of aflatoxins in paprika samples. DMSPE was followed by ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry detection (UHPLC-HRMS) using a non-targeted acquisition mode for the detection of main aflatoxins (aflatoxin G1, G2, B1 and B2) and derivatives. DMSPE was based on the use of magnetic nanocomposite coated with polypyrrole (PPy) polymer and the main experimental parameters influencing the extraction efficiency in adsorption and desorption steps have been studied and optimized. Analyses were performed using 250 µL magnetic PPy nanocomposite into the sample solution, adsorbing the analytes in 30 min and desorbing them with ethyl acetate (2 mL) in 15 min. The method has been validated, obtaining quantification limits between 3.5 and 4.7 µg kg-1 and recoveries between 89.5-97.7%. The high recovery rate, wide detection range and the use for the first time of the reusable Fe3O4@PPy nanomaterial in suspension for solid food matrices, guarantee the usefulness of the method developed for adequate control of aflatoxins levels in paprika. The proposed methodology was applied for the analysis of 31 samples (conventional and organic) revealing the absence of aflatoxins in the samples.
