In situ deposition of MOF-74(Cu) nanosheet arrays onto carbon cloth to fabricate a sensitive and selective electrocatalytic biosensor and its application for the determination of glucose in human serum

Fabrication of well-aligned Co-MOF arrays through a controlled and moderate process for the development of a flexible tetrabromobisphenol A sensor

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has attracted a great deal of attention due to its side effects and potential bioaccumulation properties. It is of great importance to construct and develop novel electrochemical sensors for the sensitive and selective detection of TBBPA. In the present study, cobalt (Co) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized on carbon cloth (CC) by using cobalt nitrate hexahydrate and 2-methylimidazole. The morphological characterization was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that Co-MOFs/CC have a leaf-like structure and abundant surface functional groups. The electrochemical properties of the sensor were investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The effects of different ratios of metal ions to organic ligands, reaction temperature, time, concentration, pH value of the electrolyte, and incubation time on the oxidation peak current of TBBPA were studied. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of the designed sensor was 0.1 μM-100 μM, and the limit of detection was 40 nM. The proposed sensor is simple, of low cost and efficient, which can greatly facilitate the detection tasks of environmental monitoring workers.

MOF-Based Chemiresistive Gas Sensors: Toward New Functionalities

The sensing performances of gas sensors must be improved and diversified to enhance quality of life by ensuring health, safety, and convenience. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit an extremely high surface area, abundant porosity, and unique surface chemistry, provide a promising framework for facilitating gas-sensor innovations. Enhanced understanding of conduction mechanisms of MOFs has facilitated their use as gas-sensing materials, and various types of MOFs have been developed by examining the compositional and morphological dependences and implementing catalyst incorporation and light activation. Owing to their inherent separation and absorption properties and catalytic activity, MOFs are applied as molecular sieves, absorptive filtering layers, and heterogeneous catalysts. In addition, oxide- or carbon-based sensing materials with complex structures or catalytic composites can be derived by the appropriate post-treatment of MOFs. This review discusses the effective techniques to design optimal MOFs, in terms of computational screening and synthesis methods. Moreover, the mechanisms through which the distinctive functionalities of MOFs as sensing materials, heterostructures, and derivatives can be incorporated in gas-sensor applications are presented.

Recent Progress in MOF-Based Electrochemical Sensors for Non-Enzymatic Glucose Detection

In recent years, substantial advancements have been made in the development of enzyme-free glucose sensors utilizing pristine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their combinations. This paper provides a comprehensive exploration of various MOF-based glucose sensors, encompassing monometallic MOF sensors as well as multi-metal MOF combinations. These approaches demonstrate improved glucose detection capabilities, facilitated by the augmented surface area and availability of active sites within the MOF structures. Furthermore, the paper delves into the application of MOF complexes and derivatives in enzyme-free glucose sensing. Derivatives incorporating carbon or metal components, such as carbon cloth synthesis, rGO-MOF composites, and core-shell structures incorporating noble metals, exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance. Additionally, the integration of MOFs with foams or biomolecules, such as porphyrins, enhances the electrocatalytic properties for glucose detection. Finally, this paper concludes with an outlook on the future development prospects of enzyme-free glucose MOF sensors.

Catalytic Modification of Porous Two-Dimensional Ni-MOFs on Portable Electrochemical Paper-Based Sensors for Glucose and Hydrogen Peroxide Detection

Rapid and accurate detection of changes in glucose (Glu) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) concentrations is essential for the predictive diagnosis of diseases. Electrochemical biosensors exhibiting high sensitivity, reliable selectivity, and rapid response provide an advantageous and promising solution. A porous two-dimensional conductive metal-organic framework (cMOF), Ni-HHTP (HHTP = 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene), was prepared by using a one-pot method. Subsequently, it was employed to construct enzyme-free paper-based electrochemical sensors by applying mass-producing screen-printing and inkjet-printing techniques. These sensors effectively determined Glu and H₂O₂ concentrations, achieving low limits of detection of 1.30 μM and 2.13 μM, and high sensitivities of 5573.21 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 and 179.85 μA μM^-1 cm^-2, respectively. More importantly, the Ni-HHTP-based electrochemical sensors showed an ability to analyze real biological samples by successfully distinguishing human serum from artificial sweat samples. This work provides a new perspective for the use of cMOFs in the field of enzyme-free electrochemical sensing, highlighting their potential for future applications in the design and development of new multifunctional and high-performance flexible electronic sensors.

BSA-stabilized silver nanoclusters for efficient photoresponsive colorimetric detection of chromium(VI)

Hexavalent chromium is a highly toxic substance, which will pose a serious threat to human life and health and the entire ecosystem. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a simple and rapid detection method for hexavalent chromium. In this work, we fabricated bovine serum albumin-stabilized silver nanocluster (BSA-Ag₁₃ NC) which exhibited photoresponsive oxidase-like activity, catalyzing the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to the blue oxidized state TMB (oxTMB) in a short time. Interestingly, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) can significantly inhibit the color reaction of TMB oxidation while Cr(VI) can interact specifically with 8-HQ to restore this chromogenic reaction. Based on the above facts, a colorimetric sensing system for detecting Cr(VI) was developed. The sensing system shows a wide linear range, and good selectivity, with a low detection limit of 2.32 nM. Moreover, this sensing system could be successfully applied to the detection of Cr(VI) in lake water, tap water, and sewage with satisfactory results.

2D Metal-Organic Frameworks: Properties, Synthesis, and Applications in Electrochemical and Optical Biosensors

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials like graphene, layered double hydroxides, etc., have received increasing attention owing to their unique properties imparted by their 2D structure. The newest member in this family is based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have been long known for their exceptional physicochemical properties-high surface area, tunable pore size, catalytic properties, etc., to list a few. 2D MOFs are promising materials for various applications as they combine the exciting properties of 2D materials and MOFs. Recently, they have been extensively used in biosensors by virtue of their enormous surface area and abundant, accessible active sites. In this review, we provide a synopsis of the recent progress in the field of 2D MOFs for sensor applications. Initially, the properties and synthesis techniques of 2D MOFs are briefly outlined with examples. Further, electrochemical and optical biosensors based on 2D MOFs are summarized, and the associated challenges are outlined.

Copper-based metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of important porous, crystalline materials composed of metal ions (clusters) and organic ligands. Owing to the unique redox chemistry, photochemical and electrical property, and catalytic activity of Cu^2+/+, copper-based MOFs (Cu-MOFs) have been recently and extensively explored in various biomedical fields. In this review, we first make a brief introduction to the synthesis of Cu-MOFs and their composites, and highlight the recent synthetic strategies of two most studied representatives, three-dimensional HKUST-1 and two-dimensional Cu-TCPP. The recent advances of Cu-MOFs in the applications of cancer treatment, bacterial inhibition, biosensing, biocatalysis, and wound healing are summarized and discussed. Furthermore, we propose a prospect of the future development of Cu-MOFs in biomedical fields and beyond.

The Construct CoSe2 on Carbon Nanosheets as High Sensitivity Catalysts for Electro-Catalytic Oxidation of Glucose

Seeking an efficient, sensitive, and stable catalyst is crucial for no-enzyme glucose sen-sors to detect glucose content accurately. Herein, we constructed a catalyst of selenide cobalt (CoSe₂) on carbon nanomaterials by auxiliary pyrolysis of sodium chloride. The CoSe₂ on carbon nanosheets possesses good selectivity and a wide linear range up to 5 mM. Based on its good detection per-formance, the CoSe₂ nanomaterial is expected to be an emerging catalyst for no-enzyme sensors.

Design of metal-organic framework composites in anti-cancer therapies

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of new and promising anti-cancer materials. MOFs with adjustable pore size, large specific surface area, diverse structure, and excellent chemical and physical properties make them a class of effective protection carriers for anti-cancer substances. This review is centered on the core point of "anti-cancer" and discusses MOFs' research progress in anti-cancer therapies. Firstly, we provided readers with the different types of MOFs, their preparation strategies and the resulting structures. Then, different MOF composites and their biological applications were systematically presented. The specificity of biomolecules endows MOFs with broader anti-cancer applications, while MOFs can protect the drugs and biomolecules to make the best of a challenging situation. Finally, we elucidated a comprehensive overview of the biological applications of MOFs, including research hotspots as drug delivery and biomolecule carriers. Besides, we looked forward to the future developments of MOFs in the field of anti-cancer therapies. As a class of novel materials, the anti-cancer applications of MOFs are extended through the combination of different materials and different methods to improve their efficacy.

Synthesis of a clustered carbon aerogel interconnected by carbon balls from the biomass of taros for construction of a multi-functional electrochemical sensor

In this study, a clustered carbon aerogel interconnected by carbon balls (CCAI-CB) was prepared as an electrode material to construct a multi-functional electrochemical sensor. CCAI-CB derived from taros (Colocasia esculenta (L). Schott) possesses meso-macroporous structure and plenty of defective sites, and shows notable activity in electrocatalysis as an electrode material. We investigated the application of CCAI-CB modified glassy carbon electrode (CCAI-CB/GCE) for determination of ascorbic acid (AA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Compared with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified GCE (CNTs/GCE) and bare GCE, CCAI-CB/GCE shows lower detection limit (0.23 μM for AA and 1.31 μM, S/N = 3), higher sensitivities (220.53, 148.86 or 94.39 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for AA and 83.06 or 49.07 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 for H₂O₂). Concentrations of AA and H₂O₂ in real samples were determined at CCAI-CB/GCE with satisfactory detection results obtained. In addition, when the CCAI-CB/GCE was used for electrocatalysis of other biomolecules, it also exhibits high electrochemical activity. Thus, CCAI-CB could be a promising electrode material for the construction of multi-functional electrochemical sensors.

Facile deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles on porous alumina discs, an efficient antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and antifouling strategy for functional contact surfaces

Surface modification is an emerging strategy for the design of contact materials. Fabricated alumina discs were functionalized by deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles. The surfaces were characterized for physico-chemical, antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against microbial pathogens. The surface demonstrated improved hydrophobicity and a surface silver nanoparticle content of 6.4 w%. A reduction of more than 99.9% in CFU mL^-i was observed against the Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria tested, with >90% reduction of the fungal isolate. After 4 h, microbial adhesion was reduced by >99.9 and 90% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Scanning electron micrographs further revealed a biofilm reduction. Cell viability tests indicated a bioincompatibility higher than 80% with Caco-2 and HaCaT cell lines after 48 h contact. The results suggest that deposition of biogenic silver nanoparticles on the surface of contact materials could be employed as a strategy to prevent biofilm formation.

Ultrathin PdCu alloy nanosheet-assembled 3D nanoflowers with high peroxidase-like activity toward colorimetric glucose detection

Enzyme-mimetic properties of nanomaterials can be efficiently tuned by controlling their size, composition, and structure. Here, ultrathin PdCu alloy nanosheet-assembled three-dimensional (3D) nanoflowers (Pd₁Cu_x NAFs) with tunable surface composition are obtained via a generalized strategy. In presence of H₂O₂, the as-synthesized Pd₁Cu_x NAFs can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to the oxidized form of TMB (oxTMB) with a characteristic absorption peak at 652 nm. Interestingly, Pd₁Cu_x NAFs show obviously composition-dependent peroxidase-like catalytic activities because of the synergistic interaction of nanoalloy. Additionally, different from 2D Pd nanosheets, the distinctive 3D superstructures are featured with rich approachable sites and proper layer spacing, which are in favor of fast mass transport and electron transfers during the catalytic process. Among the studied Pd₁Cu_x NAFs, the Pd₁Cu_1.7 NAFs show the highest enzyme-like activities and can be successfully applied for the colorimetric detection of glucose with a low detection limit of 2.93 ± 0.53 μM. This work provides an efficient avenue to fabricate PdCu NAF nanozymes in biosensing toward glucose detection. Two-dimensional (2D) PdCu ultrathin nanosheet-assembled 3D nanoflowers (Pd₁Cu_x NAFs) with tunable surface composition exhibit substantially enhanced intrinsic peroxidase-like catalytic activities. The Pd₁Cu_1.7 NAFs are successfully used as peroxidase mimic catalyst for the colorimetric detection of glucose with low detection limit of 2.93 μM.
