Probing Defects in Covalent Organic Frameworks

Defects in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) play a pivotal role in determining their properties and performance, significantly influencing interactions with adsorbates, guest molecules, and substrates as well as affecting charge carrier dynamics and light absorption characteristics. The present review focuses on the diverse array of techniques employed for characterizing and quantifying defects in COFs, addressing a critical need in the field of materials science. As will be discussed in this review, there are basically two types of defects referring either to missing organic moieties leaving free binding groups in the material or structural imperfections resulting in lower crystallinity, grain boundary defects, and incomplete stacking. The review summarizes an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art characterization techniques, elucidating their specific strengths and limitations for each defect type. Key techniques examined in this review include powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), scanning tunneling microscope (STM), high resolution transmission electron microcoe (HRTEM), gas adsorption, acid-base titration, advanced electron microscopy methods, and computational calculations. We critically assess the capability of each technique to provide qualitative and quantitative information about COF defects, offering insights into their complementary nature and potential for synergistic use. The last section summarizes the main concepts of the review and provides perspectives for future development to overcome the existing challenges.

Covalent-Organic Frameworks for Selective and Sensitive Detection of Antibiotics from Water

As the consumption of antibiotics rises, they have generated some negative impacts on organisms and the environment because they are often unable to be effectively degraded, and seeking effective detection methods is currently a challenge. Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) are new types of crystalline porous crystals created based on the strong covalent interactions between blocked monomers, and COFs demonstrate great potential in the detection of antibiotics from aqueous solutions because of their large surface area, adjustable porosity, recyclability, and predictable structure. This review aims to present state-of-the-art insights into COFs (properties, classification, synthesis methods, and functionalization). The key mechanisms for the detection of antibiotics and the application performance of COFs in the detection of antibiotics from water are also discussed, followed by the challenges and opportunities for COFs in future research.

Extraction improvement of ionic liquid-functionalized silica by in situ anion-exchange for online solid-phase extraction of estrogens in honey

The accurate detection of analytes in honey is affected by the complex substrates, making it crucial to employ an effective sample preparation technique. In this work, an imidazolium ionic liquid was functionalized to the silica surface by a click reaction for solid-phase extraction (SPE) column, and in situ anion-exchange process was performed with different organic anions (dodecyl sulfonate, dodecyl benzene sulfonate, and naphthalene sulfonate). These SPE columns were evaluated through extracting the estrogens. The naphthalene sulfonate-based SPE column displayed the best extraction ability among these, and it was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection to establish an online enrichment and analysis system. Under the optimal test conditions, an online analytical method was developed, with high enrichment factors (1872-4744), wide linear ranges (0.0033-1.50, 0.0165-1.50, and 0.0330-1.50 μg g-1), and low detection limits (0.001-0.010 μg g-1). The method successfully determined several estrogens in some honey samples, and achieved satisfactory recovery results.

Ionic liquid-functionalized mesoporous multipod silica for simultaneously effective extraction of aflatoxin B1 and its two precursors from grain

BACKGROUND

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and its precursors contaminate food and agricultural products, posing a significant risk to food safety and human health, but simultaneous and effective extraction and determination of AFB1 and its precursors with varied structures is still a challenging task.

RESULTS

In this study, a bisimidazolium-type ionic liquid functionalized mesoporous multipod silica (SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2) was fabricated to extract AFB1 and its two precursors, i.e., averantin and sterigmatocystin. The SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 could simultaneously extract three targets with varied structures based on the multipods, mesopores, and multifunctional groups. The density functional theory calculations further verified the multiple interactions between SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 and targets. The fabricated SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 could effectively extract and determine three targets in grains by combing with dispersive solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography. Good linearity (r2 > 0.9978), low LODs (0.9-1.5 μg kg-1) and LOQs (3.0-4.5 μg kg-1), satisfactory spiked recoveries (92.5%-106.8%) and high precisions (RSD<6.4%) were observed.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

This work demonstrates the feasibility of SiO2@mPMO-IL(im)2 for simultaneous and effective extraction of toxins with varied structures and provides a promising sample preparation for the analysis of AFB1 and its precursors in grain samples.
