Experimental and computational study of metal oxide nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Photocatalysis is a more proficient technique that involves the breakdown or decomposition of different organic contaminants, various dyes, and harmful viruses and fungi using UV or visible light solar spectrum. Metal oxides are considered promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their low cost, efficiency, simple fabricating method, sufficient availability, and environment-friendliness for photocatalytic applications. Among metal oxides, TiO2 is the most studied photocatalyst and is highly applied in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, TiO2 is relatively active only under ultraviolet light due to its wide bandgap, which limits its applicability because the production of ultraviolet is expensive. At present, the discovery of a photocatalyst of suitable bandgap with visible light or modification of the existing photocatalyst is becoming very attractive for photocatalysis technology. However, the major drawbacks of photocatalysts are the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the ultraviolet light activity limitations, and low surface coverage. In this review, the most commonly used synthesis method for metal oxide nanoparticles, photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, and applications and toxicity of different dyes are comprehensively highlighted. In addition, the challenges in the photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, strategies to suppress these challenges, and metal oxide studied by density functional theory for photocatalytic applications are described in detail.

‘Simple’ Oligopyridine Complexes – Sources of Unexpected Structural Diversity

The simple formulae often presented for main-group metal complexes of oligopyridines (typically 2,2′-bipyridine, 1,10-phenanthroline, and 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) hide a wide variety of polymeric solid-state structures. We present an overview of these structures and reveal a plethora of 1D chains, including ladder assemblies, and 2D networks. In most assemblies, the polymeric backbone or network is defined by the metal atoms and bridging ligands other than oligopyridines. The heterocyclic ligands typically feature as peripheral decorations, often engaging in face-to-face supramolecular π-stacking interactions which define the assembly of the crystal. In 1D coordination polymers, three types of decoration predominate which we have defined as Type 1 (all the oligopyridines on the same side and π-stacked), Type 2 (alternating arrangement of oligopyridines), and Type 3 (a pairwise alternating structure).

Pigment darkening as case study of In-Air Plasma-Induced Luminescence

We introduce the use of an In-Air Plasma-Induced Luminescence (In-Air-PIL) spectroscopy as an alternative to classical chemical and crystallographic methods used in materials science. The In-Air-PIL is evaluated on a case study investigating the effect of light aging on the darkening of five pristine yellow pigments commonly used in artworks. We show that the darkening is not associated to changes in the chemical composition, but to a loss in crystallinity, indicating an amorphization process of the pigments induced and catalyzed by the light irradiation. This favors the interaction of the pigment molecules with oxygen and carbon adsorbed from the environment or solved in the binding agent, subsequently leading to the formation of oxalates and carbonates as observed in other works. We demonstrate that the In-Air-PIL results are in perfect agreement with more complex classical materials science analysis methods, making our plasma-driven method a potentially easier and faster technique.
