A rhodamine-based “turn-on” fluorescent probe for Fe3+ in aqueous solution and its application in bioimaging

Multi-dentate chelation induces fluorescence enhancement of pyrene moiety for highly selective detection of Fe(III)

Fluorescence enhancement has great advantages and various promising applications for a fluorescent molecular probe, which shows high sensitivity and high selectivity. In this report, a novel pyrene-based fluorescent probe with multidentate ligand (PPD) was synthesized for highly selective detection of Fe(III), which exhibited great fluorescence enhancement response upon the addition of Fe(III) in aqueous solution of pH 3.5 ~ 7.5, with a detection limit of 115 nM. The probe also has good water solubility and photostability. Further fluorescence titration confirmed 1:1 stoichiometric ratio for the probe PPD-Fe(III), which can be applied for quantification of Fe(III). The probe was validated for ferric detection in real water samples by spike and recovery test.

Recent Advances on Iron(III) Selective Fluorescent Probes with Possible Applications in Bioimaging

Iron(III) is well-known to play a vital role in a variety of metabolic processes in almost all living systems, including the human body. However, the excess or deficiency of Fe3+ from the normal permissible limit can cause serious health problems. Therefore, novel analytical methods are developed for the simple, direct, and cost-effective monitoring of Fe3+ concentration in various environmental and biological samples. Because of the high selectivity and sensitivity, fast response time, and simplicity, the fluorescent-based molecular probes have been developed extensively in the past few decades to detect Fe3+. This review was narrated to summarize the Fe3+-selective fluorescent probes that show fluorescence enhancement (turn-on) and ratiometric response. The Fe3+ sensing ability, mechanisms along with the analytical novelties of recently reported 77 fluorescent probes are discussed.

A dual target chemosensor for the fluorometric detection of In3+ and colorimetric detection of Fe3

A new dual target chemosensor 1, 1,1'‑((1E,1'E)‑((thiobis(ethane‑2,1‑diyl))bis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(naphthalen‑2‑ol), was prepared by the reaction of a hydroxy-naphthaldehyde and a thiobis(ethylamine). Sensor 1 detected In³⁺ with turn-on fluorescence and Fe³⁺ via the change of color from colorless to pale violet. The sensing behaviors of 1 toward In³⁺ and Fe³⁺ were studied through photophysical experiments, ESI-mass, NMR titration, and theoretical calculations. In particular, 1 can discriminate In³⁺ from Al³⁺ and Fe³⁺ from Fe²⁺. Limits of detection for the analysis of In³⁺ and Fe³⁺ ions turned out to be 5.89 μM and 0.30 μM, respectively. In addition, sensor 1 functioned practically as a naked-eye test strip for Fe³⁺ and could be recycled by using EDTA for In³⁺ and DFO for Fe³⁺.
