Novel emissive bio-inspired non-proteinogenic coumarin-alanine amino acid: fluorescent probe for polyfunctional systems

Aggregation-Induced Emission with Alkynylcoumarin Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes: Photophysical, Dynamic Light Scattering, and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Studies

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) has gained a remarkable amount of interest in the past 20 years, but the majority of the studies are based on organic structures. Herein, three dinuclear gold(I) complexes, with the general formula [PPh₂XPPh₂-Au₂-Coum₂], where the Au(I) atom is linked to three different diphosphanes [PPh₂XPPh₂; DPPM for X = CH₂ (1.1), DPPP for X = (CH₂)₃ (1.2), and DPPA for X = C≡C (1.3)] and the propynyloxycoumarin precursor (1, 4-methyl-substituted coumarin), have been synthesized. The compounds present AIE characteristics, AIEgens, with high luminescence quantum yields in the solid state when they are compared to dilute solutions. Photophysical studies (steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence) were obtained, with AIE being observed with the three gold(I) complexes in acetonitrile/water mixtures. This was further corroborated with dynamic light scattering measurements. Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) electronic calculations show that the compounds have different syn and anti conformations (relative to the coumarin core) with 1.1 syn and 1.2 and 1.3 both anti. From time-resolved fluorescence experiments, the augment in the contribution of the longer decay component is found to be associated with the emission of the aggregate (AIE effect) and its nature (involving a dimer) rationalized from TDDFT electronic calculations.

Oxidation-Induced Differentially Selective Turn-On Fluorescence via Photoinduced Electron Transfer Based on a Ferrocene-Appended Coumarin-Quinoline Platform: Application in Cascaded Molecular Logic

Differentially selective molecular sensors that exhibit differential response toward multiple analytes are cost-effective and in high demand for various practical applications. A novel, highly differentially selective electrochemical and fluorescent chemosensor, 5, based on a ferrocene-appended coumarin-quinoline platform has been designed and synthesized. Our designed probe is very specific toward Fe³⁺ via a reversible redox process, whereas it detects Cu²⁺ via irreversible oxidation. Interestingly, it exhibits differential affinity toward the Cu⁺ ion via complexation. High-resolution mass spectrometry, ¹H NMR titration, and IR spectral studies revealed the formation of a bidentate Cu⁺ complex involving an O atom of the amide group attached to the quinoline ring and a N atom of imine unit, and this observation was further supported by quantum-chemical calculations. The metal binding responses were further investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrochemical analysis. Upon the addition of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions, the fluorescence emission of probe 5 shows a "turn-on" signal due to inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process from a donor ferrocene unit to an excited-state fluorophore. The addition of sodium l-ascorbate (LAS) as a reducing agent causes fluorescence "turn off" for the Fe³⁺ ion because of reemergence of the PET process but not for the Cu²⁺ ion because it oxidizes the ferrocene unit to a ferrocenium ion with its concomitant reduction to Cu⁺, which further complexes with 5. Thermodynamic calculations using the Weller equation along with density functional theory calculations validate the feasibility of the PET process. A unique combination of Fe³⁺, LAS, and Cu²⁺ ions has been used to produce a molecular system demonstrating combinational "AND-OR" logic operation.

The interaction of Hg2+and trivalent ions with two new fluorescein bio-inspired dual colorimetric/fluorimetric probes

Two new bio-inspired fluorescein derivatives were successfully synthesized and both the compounds showed a “turn on” fluorescence in the presence of trivalent (Al³⁺, Fe³⁺, Ga³⁺, Cr³⁺) and Hg²⁺metal ions, forming mononuclear complexes in acetonitrile.
