Structural implications of the paramagnetically shifted NMR signals from pyridine H atoms on synthetic nonheme FeIV=O complexes

NMR and Mössbauer Studies Reveal a Temperature-Dependent Switch from S = 1 to 2 in a Nonheme Oxoiron(IV) Complex with Faster C-H Bond Cleavage Rates

S = 2 FeIV═O centers generated in the active sites of nonheme iron oxygenases cleave substrate C-H bonds at rates significantly faster than most known synthetic FeIV═O complexes. Unlike the majority of the latter, which are S = 1 complexes, [FeIV(O)(tris(2-quinolylmethyl)amine)(MeCN)]2+ (3) is a rare example of a synthetic S = 2 FeIV═O complex that cleaves C-H bonds 1000-fold faster than the related [FeIV(O)(tris(pyridyl-2-methyl)amine)(MeCN)]2+ complex (0). To rationalize this significant difference, a systematic comparison of properties has been carried out on 0 and 3 as well as related complexes 1 and 2 with mixed pyridine (Py)/quinoline (Q) ligation. Interestingly, 2 with a 2-Q-1-Py donor combination cleaves C-H bonds at 233 K with rates approaching those of 3, even though Mössbauer analysis reveals 2 to be S = 1 at 4 K. At 233 K however, 2 becomes S = 2, as shown by its 1H NMR spectrum. These results demonstrate a unique temperature-dependent spin-state transition from triplet to quintet in oxoiron(IV) chemistry that gives rise to the high C-H bond cleaving reactivity observed for 2.

Comparative paraCEST effect of amide and hydroxy groups in divalent cobalt and nickel complexes of tripyridine-based ligands

Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of two tri-pyridine-based ligands with two hydroxy and two amide exchangeable protons (TDTA) and with six amide exchangeable protons (TMTP) were investigated for application as paraCEST-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. The two hydroxy groups present in the TDTA ligand were found to be passive while the amide group was active towards the CEST process. In the case of the Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of the TMTP ligand, all three coordinated amide groups participated in the exchange process, and excellent CEST signals were observed. The X-ray structure of the four complexes revealed the seven-coordinate geometry of Co(II) complexes and the six-coordinate geometry of Ni(II) complexes. The presence of amide protons and hydroxy protons in the complexes was detected by the NMR method. The stability of the complexes in solution at high temperatures, in different pH ranges and acidic conditions, in the presence of competing cations, and biologically relevant anions was investigated. Potentiometric titrations were carried out to determine the ligand's protonation constants and the complexes' thermodynamic stability constant at 25.0 °C and I = 0.15 mol L-1 NaClO4. ParaCEST studies of [Co(TMTP)]2+ and [Ni(TMTP)]2+ at variable pH and variable pulse power are highlighted.

Crystal Structures of Ce(IV) Nitrates with Bis(2-pyrrolidone) Linker Molecules Deposited from Aqueous Solutions with Different HNO3 Concentrations

We investigated the molecular and crystal structures of Ce(IV) compounds deposited under different [HNO₃] with bis(2-pyrrolidone) linker molecules having a trans-1,4-cyclohexyl bridging moiety (L). As a result, we found that, after loading L, Ce(IV) in HNO₃(aq) exclusively provides one of different crystalline phases, (HL)₂[Ce(NO₃)₆] or [Ce₂(μ-O)-(NO₃)₆(L)₂]_n 2D MOF, depending on [HNO₃]. The former has been obtained at [HNO₃] = 4.70-9.00 M and is isomorphous with the analogous (HL)₂[An(NO₃)₆] we reported previously. In contrast, the deposition of the latter phase at the lower [HNO₃] conditions (1.00-4.30 M) demonstrates that hydrolysis and oxolation of Ce⁴⁺ proceed even below pH 0 to provide a [Ce-O-Ce]⁶⁺ unit included in this compound. These different Ce(IV) phases are exchangeable with each other under soaking in HNO₃(aq), implying that chemical equilibria of dissolution/deposition of these crystalline phases and hydrolysis and oxolation of Ce⁴⁺ and its complexation with NO₃^- occur in parallel. Indeed, such coordination chemistry of Ce(IV) in HNO₃(aq) was well corroborated by ¹⁷O NMR, Raman, and IR spectroscopy.

Hydrogen-atom and oxygen-atom transfer reactivities of iron(IV)-oxo complexes of quinoline-substituted pentadentate ligands

A series of iron(II) complexes with the general formula [Fe^II(L2-Qn)(L)]ⁿ⁺ (n = 1, L = F^-, Cl^-; n = 2, L = NCMe, H₂O) have been isolated and characterized. The X-ray crystallographic data reveals that metal-ligand bond distances vary with varying ligand field strengths of the sixth ligand. While the complexes with fluoride, chloride and water as axial ligand are high spin, the acetonitrile-coordinated complex is in a mixed spin state. The steric bulk of the quinoline moieties forces the axial ligands to deviate from the Fe-N_axial axis. A higher deviation/tilt is noted for the high spin complexes, while the acetonitrile coordinated complex displays least deviation. This deviation from linearity is slightly less in the analogous low-spin iron(II) complex [Fe^II(L1-Qn)(NCMe)]²⁺ of the related asymmetric ligand L1-Qn due to the presence of only one sterically demanding quinoline moiety. The two iron(II)-acetonitrile complexes [Fe^II(L2-Qn)(NCMe)]²⁺ and [Fe^II(L1-Qn)(NCMe)]²⁺ generate the corresponding iron(IV)-oxo species with higher thermal stability of the species supported by the L1-Qn ligand. The crystallographic and spectroscopic data for [Fe^IV(O)(L1-Qn)](ClO₄)₂ bear resemblance to other crystallographically characterized S = 1 iron(IV)-oxo complexes. The hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactivities of both the iron(IV)-oxo complexes were investigated, and a Box-Behnken multivariate optimization of the parameters for catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane by [Fe^II(L2-Qn)(NCMe)]²⁺ using hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant is presented. An increase in the average Fe-N bond length in [Fe^II(L1-Qn)(NCMe)]²⁺ is also manifested in higher HAT and OAT rates relative to the other reported complexes of ligands based on the N4Py framework. The results reported here confirm that the steric influence of the ligand environment is of critical importance for the reactivity of iron(IV)-oxo complexes, but additional electronic factors must influence the reactivity of iron-oxo complexes of N4Py derivatives.

Octahedral iron(iv)-tosylimido complexes exhibiting single electron-oxidation reactivity

High valent iron species are very reactive molecules involved in oxidation reactions of relevance to biology and chemical synthesis. Herein we describe iron(iv)-tosylimido complexes [FeIV(NTs)(MePy2tacn)](OTf)2 (1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs) and [FeIV(NTs)(Me2(CHPy2)tacn)](OTf)2 (2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs), (MePy2tacn = N-methyl-N,N-bis(2-picolyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, and Me2(CHPy2)tacn = 1-(di(2-pyridyl)methyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, Ts = Tosyl). 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs are rare examples of octahedral iron(iv)-imido complexes and are isoelectronic analogues of the recently described iron(iv)-oxo complexes [FeIV(O)(L)]2+ (L = MePy2tacn and Me2(CHPy2)tacn, respectively). 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs are metastable and have been spectroscopically characterized by HR-MS, UV-vis, 1H-NMR, resonance Raman, Mössbauer, and X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy as well as by DFT computational methods. Ferric complexes [FeIII(HNTs)(L)]2+, 1(III)-NHTs (L = MePy2tacn) and 2(III)-NHTs (L = Me2(CHPy2)tacn) have been isolated after the decay of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs in solution, spectroscopically characterized, and the molecular structure of [FeIII(HNTs)(MePy2tacn)](SbF6)2 determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Reaction of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs with different p-substituted thioanisoles results in the transfer of the tosylimido moiety to the sulphur atom producing sulfilimine products. In these reactions, 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs behave as single electron oxidants and Hammett analyses of reaction rates evidence that tosylimido transfer is more sensitive than oxo transfer to charge effects. In addition, reaction of 1(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs and 2(IV)[double bond, length as m-dash]NTs with hydrocarbons containing weak C-H bonds results in the formation of 1(III)-NHTs and 2(III)-NHTs respectively, along with the oxidized substrate. Kinetic analyses indicate that reactions proceed via a mechanistically unusual HAT reaction, where an association complex precedes hydrogen abstraction.

Spectroscopic and Reactivity Comparisons between Nonheme Oxoiron(IV) and Oxoiron(V) Species Bearing the Same Ancillary Ligand

This work directly compares the spectroscopic and reactivity properties of an oxoiron(IV) and an oxoiron(V) complex that are supported by the same neutral tetradentate N-based PyNMe₃ ligand. A complete spectroscopic characterization of the oxoiron(IV) species (2) reveals that this compound exists as a mixture of two isomers. The reactivity of the thermodynamically more stable oxoiron(IV) isomer (2b) is directly compared to that exhibited by the previously reported 1e^--oxidized analogue [Fe^V(O)(OAc)(PyNMe₃)]²⁺ (3). Our data indicates that 2b is 4 to 5 orders of magnitude slower than 3 in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from C-H bonds. The origin of this huge difference lies in the strength of the O-H bond formed after HAT by the oxoiron unit, the O-H bond derived from 3 being about 20 kcal·mol^-1 stronger than that from 2b. The estimated bond strength of the Fe^IVO-H bond of 100 kcal·mol^-1 is very close to the reported values for highly active synthetic models of compound I of cytochrome P450. In addition, this comparative study provides direct experimental evidence that the lifetime of the carbon-centered radical that forms after the initial HAT by the high valent oxoiron complex depends on the oxidation state of the nascent Fe-OH complex. Complex 2b generates long-lived carbon-centered radicals that freely diffuse in solution, while 3 generates short-lived caged radicals that rapidly form product C-OH bonds, so only 3 engages in stereoretentive hydroxylation reactions. Thus, the oxidation state of the iron center modulates not only the rate of HAT but also the rate of ligand rebound.
