Detection accuracy of proximal caries by phosphor plate and cone-beam computerized tomography images scanned with different resolutions

Performance of different cone-beam computed tomography scan modes with and without metal artifact reduction in detection of recurrent dental caries under various restorative materials

Purpose

We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of different cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan modes with and without the application of a metal artifact reduction (MAR) option under 5 different restorative materials.

Material and methods

Our research was an in vitro study with 150 caries-free premolars and molars. The teeth were randomly divided into experimental (with artificially induced caries, n = 75) and control (without caries, n = 75) groups and were prepared based on 5 types of restorative materials, including conventional composites (Filtek Z250, Gradia), flow composite, glass ionomer, and amalgam. The teeth were examined under 2 CBCT scan modes (high-resolution [HIRes] and standard) with and without MAR application. Finally, the diagnostic accuracy index values (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC], sensitivity, and specificity) were calculated.

Results

The AUC of standard scan mode with the MAR option was significantly lower than that of HIRes with MAR (p = 0.018) and without MAR option (p = 0.011) in detecting recurrent caries. Also, without MAR option, the diagnostic accuracy (AUC) of the standard mode was significantly lower than that of the HIRes (p = 0.020). Similar findings were observed for sensitivity and specificity. Moreover, diagnostic performance of standard and HIRes scan modes with and without MAR in the amalgam group was lower than that in other restorative material groups.

Conclusions

Diagnostic performance of HIRes CBCT mode was higher than that of standard mode for recurrent caries and remained unaffected by MAR application. However, the accuracy in detecting recurrent caries was lower in the amalgam group compared with other restorative material groups.

Comparison of near-infrared imaging with cone-beam computed tomography for proximal caries detection in permanent dentition: An in vivo study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of near-infrared imaging (NIRI) and unaided visual examination (UVE) in detecting proximal caries in permanent dentition in comparison with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

METHODS

Patients who underwent NIRI, UVE, and CBCT imaging within 1 week were enrolled. Using CBCT as the reference test, the positive percent agreement (PPA), negative percent agreement (NPA), and overall percent agreement (OPA) of NIRI, UVE, and a combination of the two for detecting proximal caries at different depths and in different tooth locations were assessed. Additionally, the consistency of these diagnostic methods with CBCT was evaluated.

RESULTS

We evaluated 6,084 proximal surfaces and identified 177 CBCT-positive sites. NIRI had a PPA, NPA, and OPA of 68.93 %, 99.09 %, and 98.21 %, respectively, with a substantial agreement with CBCT. When combined with UVE, the PPA increased by approximately 50 % compared with that of UVE alone. Regarding caries at different depths, NIRI outperformed UVE in detecting initial caries (ICDAS 1-2) over moderate-to-advanced caries (ICDAS 3-6). However, the combined use of NIRI and UVE improved the detection of moderate-to-advanced caries. In the anterior teeth region, NIRI exhibited excellent agreement with CBCT, surpassing its performance in the posterior region.

CONCLUSIONS

Although NIRI cannot fully replace radiographic methods, the substantial agreement of NIRI with CBCT in detecting proximal caries highlights its potential as a complementary tool in routine caries screening, especially when combined with UVE.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

This study highlights the potential of NIRI as a radiation-free method for detecting proximal caries in permanent teeth. Early detection through regular NIRI scanning can lead to timely intervention, improved patient outcomes, and reduced overall disease burden.

Potential impact of metal crowns at varying distances from a carious lesion on its detection on cone-beam computed tomography scans with several protocols

Purpose

This study evaluated the impact of artifacts generated by metal crowns on the detection of proximal caries lesions in teeth at various distances using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Additionally, the diagnostic impacts of tube current and metal artifact reduction (MAR) were investigated.

Materials and Methods

Thirty teeth were arranged within 10 phantoms, each containing 1 first premolar, 1 second premolar, and 1 second molar. A sound first molar (for the control group) or a tooth with a metal crown was placed. Of the 60 proximal surfaces evaluated, 15 were sound and 45 exhibited enamel caries. CBCT scans were acquired using an OP300 Maxio unit (Instrumentarium, Tuusula, Finland), while varying the tube current (4, 8, or 12.5 mA) and enabling or disabling MAR. Five observers assessed mesial and distal surfaces using a 5-point scale. Multi-way analysis of variance was employed for data comparison, with P<0.05 indicating statistical significance.

Results

The area under the curve (AUC) varied from 0.40 to 0.60 (sensitivity: 0.28-0.45, specificity: 0.44-0.80). The diagnostic accuracy was not significantly affected by the presence of a metal crown, milliamperage, or MAR (P>0.05). However, the overall AUC and specificity were significantly lower for surfaces near a crown (P<0.05).

Conclusion

CBCT-based caries detection was not influenced by the presence of a metal crown, variations in milliamperage, or MAR activation. However, the diagnostic accuracy was low and was further diminished for surfaces near a crown. Consequently, CBCT is not recommended for the detection of incipient caries lesions.

Comparison of accuracy cone-beam computed tomography and digital bitewing radiography for detection of recurrent caries under various restorative materials: in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate diagnostic accuracy of two different CBCT scan modes and digital bitewing radiography for detection of recurrent caries under five different restorative materials, and determine the relationship between the types of restorative materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this in vitro study, 200 caries-free upper and lower premolars and molars were selected. A standard deep Class II cavities was created in the middle of the mesial surface of all teeth. In 100 teeth of the experimental and control groups, secondary caries was artificially demineralized. All teeth were filled with five types of restorative material including two types of conventional composite resins, flow composite resin, glass ionomer and amalgam. The teeth were imaged with high resolution (HIRes) and standard CBCT scan modes and digital bitewing. The AUC, sensitivity, specificity and areas under the ROC curve were calculated and verified through SPSS.

RESULTS

CBCT technique was the best option in diagnosing recurrent caries. The diagnostic accuracy and specificity of HIRes CBCT scan mode was significantly higher than standard mode (P = 0.031) and bitewing (P = 0.029) for detection of recurrent caries, especially under composite group. There were no significant differences in accuracy value of bitewing and standard CBCT scan mode.

CONCLUSION

CBCT showed higher accuracy and specificity on the detection of recurrent caries which was more accurate than bitewing radiography. The HIRes CBCT scan mode achieved the highest accuracy and performed the best in recurrent caries detection.

Evaluation of diagnostic accuracy of CBCT and intraoral radiography for proximal caries detection in the presence of different dental restoration materials

PURPOSE

This study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and digital intraoral radiography for the detection of proximal caries adjacent to amalgam, e.max porcelain, and metal-ceramic restorations (MCRs).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Parallel intraoral radiographs were obtained from 40 posterior teeth using PSP sensors. To obtain CBCT scans, the teeth were first radiographed alone, and were then positioned next to a tooth with an amalgam restoration, MCR, and e.max porcelain crown, and radiographed again. Two blinded observers scored radiographs using a four-point scale (0: absence of proximal caries, 1: enamel caries, 2: carious lesion extending to the outer half of dentin, 3: carious lesion extending to the inner half of dentin). Tooth sections were made, and the grade of caries was determined under a light microscope at x12 magnification. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CBCT and intraoral radiographs were then calculated.

RESULTS

Artifact-free CBCT scans and intraoral radiographs had the highest diagnostic accuracy (0.826 and 0.657, respectively) while CBCT images of the teeth next to the amalgam restorations (0.526) had the lowest accuracy. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT images of the teeth next to the porcelain crowns and MCRs was 0.613 and 0.601, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Artifact-free CBCT images had higher diagnostic accuracy than intraoral radiography for the detection of all grades of proximal caries. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT images of teeth adjacent to amalgam, porcelain, and MCRs was lower compared to intraoral radiographs and artifact-free CBCT images.

Effect of field of view and voxel size on CBCT-based accuracy of dynamic navigation in endodontic microsurgery: an in vitro study

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of field of view (FOV) and voxel size on the accuracy of dynamic navigation (DN)-assisted endodontic microsurgery (EMS).

METHODS

Nine sets of maxillary and mandibular three-dimensional-printed jaw models composed of 180 teeth were divided into nine groups with different FOVs (80 × 80 mm, 60 × 60 mm, and 40 × 40 mm) and voxel sizes (0.3, 0.16, and 0.08 mm). The endodontic DN system was used to plan and execute the EMS. The accuracy of the DN-EMS was represented by the platform deviation, end deviation, angular deviation, resection angle, and resection length deviation. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 24.0, and the significance level was set at p < 0.05.

RESULTS

The average platform, end, angular, resection angle, and resection length deviation were 0.69 ± 0.31 mm, 0.93 ± 0.44 mm, 3.47 ± 1.80°, 2.35 ± 1.76°, and 0.41 ± 0.29 mm, respectively. No statistically significant differences in accuracy were observed between the nine FOV and voxel size groups.

CONCLUSION

FOV and voxel size did not appear to play an important role in the accuracy of DN-EMS. Considering the image quality and radiation dose, it is reasonable to select a limited FOV (such as 40 × 40 mm and 60 × 60 mm) to cover only the registration device, involved teeth, and periapical lesion. The voxel size should be selected according to the required resolution and CBCT units.

Detecting Proximal Caries on Periapical Radiographs Using Convolutional Neural Networks with Different Training Strategies on Small Datasets

The present study aimed to evaluate the performance of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that were trained with small datasets using different strategies in the detection of proximal caries at different levels of severity on periapical radiographs. Small datasets containing 800 periapical radiographs were randomly categorized into a training and validation dataset (n = 600) and a test dataset (n = 200). A pretrained Cifar-10Net CNN was used in the present study. Different training strategies were used to train the CNN model independently; these strategies were defined as image recognition (IR), edge extraction (EE), and image segmentation (IS). Different metrics, such as sensitivity and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), for the trained CNN and human observers were analysed to evaluate the performance in detecting proximal caries. IR, EE, and IS recognition modes and human eyes achieved AUCs of 0.805, 0.860, 0.549, and 0.767, respectively, with the EE recognition mode having the highest values (p all < 0.05). The EE recognition mode was significantly more sensitive in detecting both enamel and dentin caries than human eyes (p all < 0.05). The CNN trained with the EE strategy, the best performer in the present study, showed potential utility in detecting proximal caries on periapical radiographs when using small datasets.

Radiographic modalities for diagnosis of caries in a historical perspective: from film to machine-intelligence supported systems

Radiographic imaging for the diagnosis of caries lesions has been a supplement to clinical examination for approximately a century. Various methods, and particularly X-ray receptors, have been developed over the years, and computer systems have focused on aiding the dentist in the detection of lesions and in estimating lesion depth. The present historical review has sampled accuracy ex vivo studies and clinical studies on radiographic caries diagnosis that have compared two or more receptors for capturing the image. The epochs of film radiography, xeroradiography, digital intraoral radiography, panoramic radiography and other extraoral methods, TACT analysis, cone-beam CT and artificial intelligence systems aiding in decision-making are reviewed. The author of this review (43 years in academia) has been involved in caries research and contributed to the literature in all the mentioned epochs.

Comparison of CBCT with different voxel sizes and intraoral scanner for detection of periodontal defects: an in vitro study

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam CT (CBCT) units with different voxel sizes with the digital intraoral scanning technique in terms of the detection of periodontal defects.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

The study material comprised of 12 dry skulls with maxilla and mandible. Artificial defects were created on teeth separately using burs randomly on dry skulls. In total 46 dehiscences, 10 fenestrations, 17 furcations, 12 wall defects and 13 without periodontal defect were used in the study. Each tooth with and without defects was imaged at various vertical angles using each of the following modalities: a Veraviewepocs 3D R100 CBCT device and a 3D Shape TRIOSㄾ Color P13 Shade Intraoral Scanner.

RESULTS

The κ values for interobserver agreement between observers ranged between 0.29 and 0.86 for the CBCT 10 × 8 cm field of view (FOV) with 0,160 mm3 voxel size; 0.35 and 1 for the CBCT 8 × 8 cm FOV with 0,125 mm3 voxel size; and 0.30 and 1 of intraoral scans. The κ values for detecting defects on anterior teeth were the least, following premolar and molar teeth both CBCT and intraoral scanning.

CONCLUSIONS

Smaller voxel sizes and smaller CBCT FOV has the highest sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy for detecting various periodontal defects among the scanner modalities examined.

ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE

Adequate evaluation of the condition of the alveolar bone and periodontal tissues is important for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of periodontal disease. Limited examination methods, such as palpation, inspection, and periodontal probe examination, may provide insufficient information for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases.

Comparison of Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Radiographs Using Clinically Relevant Parameters

This work compared the assessment of clinically relevant parameters by two-dimensional, that is, full-mouth intraoral radiograph (I-O) and panoramic radiograph (OPT), and three-dimensional, that is, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), imaging methods. Different radiographic images (CBCT, I-O and OPT) were available for a 53-year-old female patient with dental and periodontal problems. A total of 14 dental and periodontal parameters were assessed by two independent examiners and compared among the three radiographic imaging modalities. For 10 parameters (71%), the CBCT images were superior to both I-O and OPT images. In contrast, CBCT demonstrated an inferior performance compared to I-O and OPT in the assessment of caries and dental restorations. Compared to OPT, I-O provided more clinically relevant findings for 10 out of 14 parameters (71%). Agreement between I-O and OPT was found with respect to dehiscence, fenestration, the number of bone walls and the root canal cross-section. Differences between the radiographic images were more likely to be detected when maxillary teeth rather than mandibular teeth were assessed with regard to furcation involvement, root proximity and root fusion.

Diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography scans with high- and low-resolution modes for the detection of root perforations

Purpose

This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans obtained with 2 CBCT systems with high- and low-resolution modes for the detection of root perforations in endodontically treated mandibular molars.

Materials and Methods

The root canals of 72 mandibular molars were cleaned and shaped. Perforations measuring 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mm in diameter were created at the furcation area of 48 roots, simulating strip perforations, or on the external surfaces of 48 roots, simulating root perforations. Forty-eight roots remained intact (control group). The roots were filled using gutta-percha (Gapadent, Tianjin, China) and AH26 sealer (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland). The CBCT scans were obtained using the NewTom 3G (QR srl, Verona, Italy) and Cranex 3D (Soredex, Helsinki, Finland) CBCT systems in high- and low-resolution modes, and were evaluated by 2 observers. The chi-square test was used to assess the nominal variables.

Results

In strip perforations, the accuracies of low- and high-resolution modes were 75% and 83% for NewTom 3G and 67% and 69% for Cranex 3D. In root perforations, the accuracies of low- and high-resolution modes were 79% and 83% for NewTom 3G and was 56% and 73% for Cranex 3D.

Conclusion

The accuracy of the 2 CBCT systems was different for the detection of strip and root perforations. The Cranex 3D had non-significantly higher accuracy than the NewTom 3G. In both scanners, the high-resolution mode yielded significantly higher accuracy than the low-resolution mode. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT scans was not affected by the perforation diameter.

Alternative methods to visual and radiographic examinations for approximal caries detection

A shift in caries prevalence from occlusal surfaces to approximal surfaces has been demonstrated by epidemiological studies. Two recent meta-analyses evaluated the performance of visual examination and radiography for carious lesion detection, and reported low sensitivity but high specificity for early approximal caries detection. This suggests that the conventional methods have a higher risk of failing to detect approximal lesions. Consequently, in caries susceptible populations, there is a risk of progression of non-cavitated lesions to irreversible tooth destruction before the lesions are detected. This paper aims to review the performance of unconventional and novel methods for approximal caries detection. In vitro and in vivo studies identified through a MEDLINE search using keywords such as caries detection, approximal caries detection, light fluorescence and dental caries, and transillumination and dental caries were reviewed. The unconventional methods known to be used for approximal caries detection and included in this review are: cone beam computed tomography, fiber-optic trans-illumination, digital imaging fiber optic trans-illumination, near-infrared digital imaging transillumination, optical coherence tomography, laser fluorescence, ultrasound, and LED reflection and refraction.

Comparison of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography and Intraoral Radiography in Detection of Recurrent Caries under Composite Restorations

Abstract Secondary caries is the most common cause of dental restoration failures. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of conventional and digital intraoral radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for detection of recurrent caries around composite restorations. mesio-occluso-distal (MOD) cavities were prepared using bur on 45 extracted sound human molar teeth. The teeth were divided into 3 groups. In the control group, cavities were restored with composite resin after etching and bonding (n=15). In Group 2, 500-μm thick wax was placed over the buccal, lingual and gingival walls and the cavities were restored with composite resin. Group 3 specimens were subjected to pH cycling and artificial caries were created on the buccal, lingual and gingival walls. The cavities were restored with composite. Conventional and digital photo-stimulable phosphor (PSP; Optime) radiographs and two CBCTs images (NewTom 3G and Cranex 3D) were obtained from them. Presence or absence of caries in the cavity walls was assessed on these images. Data were analyzed using Kappa statistic. The diagnostic accuracy of CBCT was significantly higher than that of digital and conventional intraoral radiography (p<0.05). The accuracy was 0.83, 0.78, 0.55 and 0.49 for CBCT Cranex 3D, CBCT NewTom 3G, conventional and digital intraoral radiography, respectively. CBCT has a higher diagnostic accuracy than digital and conventional intraoral radiography for detection of secondary caries around composite restorations.

Effect of Time Lapse on the Diagnostic Accuracy of Cone Beam Computed Tomography for Detection of Vertical Root Fractures

Accurate and early diagnosis of vertical root fractures (VRFs) is imperative to prevent extensive bone loss and unnecessary endodontic and prosthodontic treatments. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of time lapse on the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for VRFs in endodontically treated dog's teeth. Forty-eight incisors and premolars of three adult male dogs underwent root canal therapy. The teeth were assigned to two groups: VRFs were artificially induced in the first group (n=24) while the teeth in the second group remained intact (n=24). The CBCT scans were obtained by NewTom 3G unit immediately after inducing VRFs and after one, two, three, four, eight, 12 and 16 weeks. Three oral and maxillofacial radiologists blinded to the date of radiographs assessed the presence/absence of VRFs on CBCT scans. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy values were calculated and data were analyzed using SPSS v.16 software and ANOVA. The total accuracy of detection of VRFs immediately after surgery, one, two, three, four, eight, 12 and 16 weeks was 67.3%, 68.7%, 66.6%, 64.6%, 64.5%, 69.4%, 68.7%, 68% respectively. The effect of time lapse on detection of VRFs was not significant (p>0.05). Overall sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of CBCT for detection of VRFs were 74.3%, 62.2%, 67.2% respectively. Cone beam computed tomography is a valuable tool for detection of VRFs. Time lapse (four months) had no effect on detection of VRFs on CBCT scans.

Detection of root perforations using conventional and digital intraoral radiography, multidetector computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to compare the accuracy of conventional intraoral (CI) radiography, photostimulable phosphor (PSP) radiography, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for detection of strip and root perforations in endodontically treated teeth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Mesial and distal roots of 72 recently extracted molar were endodontically prepared. Perforations were created in 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mm diameter around the furcation of 48 roots (strip perforation) and at the external surface of 48 roots (root perforation); 48 roots were not perforated (control group). After root obturation, intraoral radiography, CBCT and MDCT were taken. Discontinuity in the root structure was interpreted as perforation. Two observers examined the images. Data were analyzed using Stata software and Chi-square test.

RESULTS

The sensitivity and specificity of CI, PSP, CBCT and MDCT in detection of strip perforations were 81.25% and 93.75%, 85.42% and 91.67%, 97.92% and 85.42%, and 72.92% and 87.50%, respectively. For diagnosis of root perforation, the sensitivity and specificity were 87.50% and 93.75%, 89.58% and 91.67%, 97.92% and 85.42%, and 81.25% and 87.50%, respectively. For detection of strip perforation, the difference between CBCT and all other methods including CI, PSP and MDCT was significant (p < 0.05). For detection of root perforation, only the difference between CBCT and MDCT was significant, and for all the other methods no statistically significant difference was observed.

CONCLUSIONS

If it is not possible to diagnose the root perforations by periapical radiographs, CBCT is the best radiographic technique while MDCT is not recommended.

A comparative study of the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography and intraoral radiographic modalities for the detection of noncavitated caries

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the detection of approximal and occlusal noncavitated carious lesions.

METHODS

A total of 135 extracted human posterior teeth were used. They were radiographed using the following: conventional film (Kodak Insight), a digital system (PSP plates Digora Optime, Soredex), and a CBCT system (NewTom 3G, Quantitative Radiology). All the images were assessed by two independent observers twice. Receiver operating characteristic analysis (Az) was used.

RESULTS

NewTom 3G 9″ CBCT was statistically inferior to conventional film and a digital system for the detection of approximal caries. NewTom 3G 9″ had significantly higher Az values than PSP plate (p < 0.05), but there were no statistically significant differences between the Az values for CBCT and film (p > 0.33) for occlusal surface caries.

CONCLUSION

The diagnostic accuracy of all three tested radiographic systems is low, and it is necessary to use other methods to improve early caries detection.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

CBCT has found a wide application in different fields of dentistry. The report from a CBCT examination performed for any of these reasons should include all abnormal findings, and the detection of noncavitated caries lesions is especially important because it facilitates the use of noninvasive treatment.

Impact of voxel size variation on CBCT-based diagnostic outcome in dentistry: a systematic review

The objective of this study was to make a systematic review on the impact of voxel size in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based image acquisition, retrieving evidence regarding the diagnostic outcome of those images. The MEDLINE bibliographic database was searched from 1950 to June 2012 for reports comparing diverse CBCT voxel sizes. The search strategy was limited to English-language publications using the following combined terms in the search strategy: (voxel or FOV or field of view or resolution) and (CBCT or cone beam CT). The results from the review identified 20 publications that qualitatively or quantitatively assessed the influence of voxel size on CBCT-based diagnostic outcome, and in which the methodology/results comprised at least one of the expected parameters (image acquisition, reconstruction protocols, type of diagnostic task, and presence of a gold standard). The diagnostic task assessed in the studies was diverse, including the detection of root fractures, the detection of caries lesions, and accuracy of 3D surface reconstruction and of bony measurements, among others. From the studies assessed, it is clear that no general protocol can be yet defined for CBCT examination of specific diagnostic tasks in dentistry. Rationale in this direction is an important step to define the utility of CBCT imaging.

Detection accuracy of condylar bony defects in Promax 3D cone beam CT images scanned with different protocols

OBJECTIVES

To investigate and compare the detection accuracy of bony defects on the condylar surface of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in cone beam CT (CBCT) images scanned with standard and large view protocols on the same machine.

METHODS

21 dry human skulls with 42 TMJs were scanned with the large view and standard view protocols of the CBCT scanner Promax 3D (Planmeca, Helsinki, Finland). Seven observers evaluated all the images for the presence or absence of defects on the surface of the condyle. Using the macroscopic examination of condylar defects as the gold standard, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed.

RESULTS

Macroscopic examination revealed that, of the 42 condyles, 18 were normal and 24 had a defect on the surface of the condyles. Areas under the ROC curves for the large view and the standard view group of CBCT images were 0.739 and 0.720, respectively, and no significant difference was found between the two groups of images (p = 0.902). Neither the interobserver nor the intraobserver variability were significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The two scanning protocols provided by the CBCT scanner Promax 3D were reliable and comparable with detection of condylar defects.
